Using this genetic material, the firm discovered some of its customers possessed antibodies that blocked small proteins known as IL-36 cytokines. It developed a form of the antibody in-house.
These are linked to skin conditions psoriasis and lupus, as well as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease.

YAAAS. This is why we have ALL done 23 and Me. Shit gets DONE. The woman that runs the thing is a classic type A overachiever.

BY the way, if you've done something to make them go searching through MY DNA to find you, I hope they find you and haul you away.

All these cold case files getting solved? SPECTACULAR. LOVE IT.

Some other interesting medical things in the news.

Researchers used tiny amounts of a metal which is known to be toxic to cells
They injected it into tumours and boosted the immune system for a double effect
When tumour cells were injected into the body again the body fought them off

https://frontier.yahoo.com/news/1-pill-could-stop-women-112047013.html
The study, published in the EBioMedicine journal, a new class of diabetes drugs called gliptins targets an enzyme involved in the recruitment of circulating stem cells to the womb.

Researchers analysed whether inhibiting this enzyme, called DPP4, using a particular drug - sitagliptin - would improve conditions in the womb for pregnancy.

In the trial, 38 women aged 18 to 42 who had experienced a large number of recurrent miscarriages - five on average - were given either an oral course of sitagliptin or a placebo for three menstrual cycles.

Biopsies of the womb were taken at the start of the course of treatment, and afterwards, to determine the number of stem cells present before and after the course.

There was an average increase in stem cell count of 68 per cent in those women who took the full course of sitagliptin. This compares to no significant increase in those in the control group receiving an identical placebo pill.

Those on the treatment also saw a 50 per cent decrease in the number of "stressed" cells present in the lining of the womb.

Researchers say there were minimal side effects for the participants.

They now hope to take the treatment to a clinical trial.

If successful it would be the first targeted specifically at the lining of the womb to prevent miscarriage.

Currently the drug is used by the NHS to treat diabetes, at a cost of £8 a week.

Roughly 80 per cent of the 10million people who've signed up to 23andMe have consented for their DNA, mostly saliva and hair, to be used for research.

And have NO RIGHTS to any proceeds from it.
Quote:

Kenneth Hillan, head of therapeutics at 23andMe, said: ‘Working with Almirall, we’re pleased to be furthering 23andMe’s MISSION of helping PEOPLE benefit from genetic insights.
Except for the 'people' whose DNA it is, of course. And the MISSION is for companies to make money. LOTS of money. From something they didn't invent and don't own but can patent anyway.
Quote:

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Of course they weren't.

Quote:

BY the way, if you've done something to make them go searching through MY DNA to find you
OK. I'll bite. Why would 'they' go searching through YOUR DNA to find ME? Are we related at all? (I'd hate to think it made sense to you at the time you typed it, and it sure didn't make sense to me at the time I read it.)
Quote:

I hope they find you and haul you away.
I think you need to worry more about what YOU've done, hon.

But never fear. If anyone at all on your side of the family has done genetic testing 'they' have your DNA too. You'll show up in a genetic genealogy tree. And considering that over a quarter of all people in the US have been genetically tested, there's a good chance you're already represented in that big, searchable database of DNA in the sky ... or cloud ... as it were.
Quote:

All these cold case files getting solved? SPECTACULAR. LOVE IT.
Yep. Because of random family members getting tested who could point the genetic finger at ... somebody. Maybe you.

Why SHOULD I make money when 23 and Me did all the work?

I'm thrilled that they've come up with something that could help hubby and his psoriasis. He may be long dead if we wait for gov't funded science to get off its ass and figure it out. This is one of the few things capitalism is GREAT AT.

I am related to about 1500 people on 23 and Me. There's a slim chance I AM related to someone on here. There has also been dozens of stories on the news where they have used a cousin or such on one of these type of sites to track down cold case DNA.
Once again, do you HAVE news sites in your quaint little village??

I haven't killed anyone. I make no guarantees in future wars against zombie fascists, but I have done nothing to even be implicated in any cases. If they remove from society 1000 criminals and make one mistake, I really don't care. There are no guarantees in life IN ANYTHING YOU DO, but 1000 less assholes around me?? AWESOME.

BTW, all three of us have ALREADY taken 23 and Me.

I have a shortened life expectancy because of the autism spectrum and sulfite intolerance, but now I know if I did live long enough I'd go blind. I started taking a supplement that is really helping with symptoms I didn't know were caused my my defective eye genes. We also figured out a metabolic issue with hubby we didn't know he was prone too.

Like I said....23 and Me? I'm ALL ON BOARD WITH DAT.

Because YOU actually OWN your DNA? And the company that uses it to make money should at least pay you to use it? Or do you not believe you own your own body?

If you truly believe that, do I have a pimp for you!
Quote:

Hon, it was GOVERNMENT that decoded the human genome, and made it freely available. Everything else is just business sucking the freebies-tits the government created. Yanno, so those businesses can use something for free and grab your money.

GOOD FOR YOU! But I KNOW for a fact I'm NOT related to you!

So you STILL haven't answered the question - how could *I* do anything to have government come looking for YOU?

Stick to the question, hon.

You still haven't addressed the major - and I mean truly significant - logic gaps in just this one post.

I assure you, 23andme doesn't test for 'autism spectrum' or 'sulfite' problems. It's allowed to test for: Parkinson's disease, late-onset Alzheimer's disease, celiac disease, Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, early-onset primary dystonia, Factor XI deficiency, Gaucher disease type 1, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, hereditary hemochromatosis, and hereditary thrombophilia.

Anything else you mistakenly think you know is NOT from 23andme.

So, pardon me if I don't take your (ignorant, scrambled-thinking) word for it.

To get back to your earlier SERIOUS logic-fail - how could *I* do anything to have government searching for me through *YOUR* DNA, again?

Or as you so eloquently put it: "... if you've done something to make them go searching through MY DNA to find you, I hope they find you and haul you away."

SHOW ME where I said 23 N Me tests for sulfite intolerance or autism spectrum. I already KNEW THOSE.
?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I know from my OWN research that the Autism Spectrum comes with a shorter lifespan.

Having a sulfite intolerance usually runs concurrent with heart and other bowel problems, also people on the spectrum are prone to bowel problems.

The "eye genes" I'm referring to are the macular degeneration ones that 23 and me DOES test for..... My kid got one copy of one gene, I got two copies of TWO macular degeneration genes. It only gave one to mom and I got another set from dad. Mom got it from my grandma who is currently almost completely blind.

NO YOU DO NOT KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT RELATED TO ME. You CAN'T (assuming you are HUMAN). You don't know what my ancestry IS.

Even if you are 100% Russian, I have several Western European countries listed on my ancestry report. I also have several relatives that live in California, Alaska...even South America and Italy.

If YOU committed a violent crime and left blood at the scene but you were not on file with any government you could still be tracked down through a cousin or sibling THROUGH A DNA SITE by way of sections of DNA that don't change much through generations.

The US national DNA database used by police and the FBI – called CODIS – doesn’t store whole DNA sequence data. Instead, it focusses on up to 20 specific stretches of repetitive DNA code. These regions vary between individuals, so can help identify people. But consumer genetic databases store different data instead – single-letter variations in DNA across hundreds of thousands of sites in the human genome. With more data points, you can more accurately pin down a person’s relationship to others.

PS. Hemochromatosis is defined as a metabolic disorder affecting iron absorption, and resulting in the accumulation of excess iron in the body's organs. ... One in nine people carry the gene—making hemochromatosis the most common genetic disorder in the United States.

He's a carrier for it AND he has high iron levels, we've backed him away from high iron foods.

Ironically, our daughter is anemic.

THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY THAT YOU KNOW ALL 5000+ of your *extended relatives*
....AND YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW MY DAMN NAME.

Like I said, I have about 1500 relatives (1st through seventh cousins) just on 23 and Me, but Ancestry may have another 1500 relatives
THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WAY YOU ARE HUMAN AND PERSONALLY KNOW EVERY ONE OF YOUR FIRST-FOURTEENTH COUSINS.

If YOU did something criminal but they didn't know YOU existed other than possessing your crime DNA sample and our theoretically similar DNA profiles on a DNA site, law enforcement might come knocking on MY door to find out where YOU are since I would be easy to find. They do it all the time.

Hon, you have no idea what I know about my extended family.

Before you dig an even bigger hole for yourself, I suggest you stop digging.

So you STILL haven't answered the question - how could *I* do anything to have government come looking for YOU?

Stick to the question, hon.

BTW, I think 2 of your issues are that 1) you're EXTREMELY ignorant about databases and how they're used! and 2) You're incredibly ignorant about DNA in this day and age!

They won't search for *you*, hon. They'll search the ENTIRE database! It's how databases are used!

And if they find some EXTREMELY distant match of your DNA to some crime scene DNA, they won't think it's you! They'll know it's some very, very, distant relative THAT'S NOT YOU. They won't come looking for YOU! And they won't assume that some distant third cousin is going to try and hide WITH YOU instead of those 3000+ other relatives you believe you have! Not only that, the more genetically distant you are, the less and less likely you'll be involved in - well, anything to do with that.

And finally, for distant relatives (beyond first cousins), they need another partial match so they can start sifting through family ancestries for a point of commonality.

Are WE first cousins? Well, maybe in your neck of the woods there are uncle-daddies, and cousin-daddies, and other secret family relations, but not in my family. I know who my first cousins are.

Try very, very hard to be logical!

Seems like you just made a very good argument for NOT being a database. The likelihood of you ... or your husband or daughter ... being erroneously fingered as a criminal suspect sound rather high, when you put it that way.

I don't know how completely 23 and Me sequences a person's genes. For investigative purposes, they don't look across the entire genome, they look at a limited set. So for example in the OJ trial, that led to a 1-in-a-million chance of an accidental match. But in a metro area of 12 million, that means there are 12 people who might be ID'd as suspects on the basis of DNA alone.

Quote:

So, why would I want my DNA in a database, again?

I'm not a fan of "big data". In general, it's not a very useful tool for anything. If you have an extremely large and complex data set, and you start hunting around for "patterns" the chances are that you will find a whole bunch of "patterns" that are entirely meaningless. There is a saying ... "give me white noise and the right filter and I can find you anything'. Big data is white noise, and the filter is your desire to find a pattern ... ANY pattern. I'm sure you'd find "something", and so can law enforcement.

Actually, most people that end up falsely convicted were convicted because they were misidentified. BY HUMANS.

Eyewitness misidentification is the leading cause of wrongful convictions in the United States. Over 75 percent of DNA exoneration cases have involved convictions based on mistaken identification evidence.
http://www.newenglandinnocence.org/causes-of-wrongful-convictions

To date there are 367 convictions that have been overturned with the HELP of DNA evidence, so having your DNA on file would statistically HELP you.

23and me has written quite a bit and they've been right quite a lot.

They aren't looking at whole genomes, only specific sections. It's a limited data set and computers are doing the analyzing. You have a BETTER SUGGESTION??

Not at all.

If I'm falsely accused, I'm already in jail and - guess what? They will have my DNA because I'm in jail! The only reason why people are exonerated because of DNA is from old cases, before DNA was ever a technology. If they still have DNA evidence from the case they can compare it to the falsely convicted because ... guess what? The falsely convicted is already in jail!

BTW, I rate eyewitness testimony very low on reliability. Show 30 people the same event and you'll get 25 different descriptions. That's why I like to look at physical evidence.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Carl Sagan's Baloney Detection Kit

Wherever possible there must be independent confirmation of the facts.

Encourage substantive debate on the evidence by knowledgeable proponents of all points of view.

Arguments from authority carry little weight (in science there are no "authorities").

Spin more than one hypothesis - don't simply run with the first idea that caught your fancy.

Try not to get overly attached to a hypothesis just because it's yours.

Quantify, wherever possible.

If there is a chain of argument every link in the chain must work.

Occam's razor - if there are two hypotheses that explain the data equally well choose the simpler.

Ask whether the hypothesis can, at least in principle, be falsified (shown to be false by some unambiguous test). In other words, it is testable? Can others duplicate the experiment and get the same result?

I cook up a mix of chicken and pork for him, and unless my family wants to eat Subway every day, someone has to cook for them. Then there's my 94 yr old granny, who I take dinner to all the time because she's stopped wanting to cook for herself since she can't see.

You husband and daughter don't know how to cook? It seems like a lot of your role is doing stuff for people that they could be doing for themselves, for you, or for granny.

This stuck out for me because when I was young, our mom taught us how to cook, do laundry, clean, and a bit about nursing. Our dad taught us things like how to change a tire, how to mow the lawn, basic wiring and construction, and the like. I understand division of labor. But it seems like you're holding them in a state of helplessness. Maybe you could teach them the basics so they're not dependent on Subway.

If by that you mean learning how to do new things online all the time, putting them into action and bettering myself and my position in life, sure... I'm proving how little I know.

Hubby's family is military. If you were fed it was all good. They would let them go to Mc D's or Taco Hell and eat a dozen taco's on quarter taco night or quarter cheeseburger night. He doesn't know a single thing about cooking vegetables and doesn't want to know. If I didn't cook he would live off pizza, burgers, fries, and burritos until he had a massive coronary.

Yes, my daughter knows how to cook basics, but is young and gets distracted easily. She is much better at plating, getting drinks on the table, and clearing it. I wasn't interested in cooking until I had someone to cook for, and I think she is the same way. Also, I'M the one who taught her how to take a lawn mower apart, and she was my assistant on building my porch this summer, and for every other project on this house. She does all the laundry and gets paid for it and likes doing it.

She is -by far- the most competent teen in the county. Yer barking up the wrong tree, as usual.

Burping the alphabet and being brainwashed by loud talkers aren't useful skills.
You might be able to use the beer pong vids to win $5 someday though.

Like I said, big goals!

I don't even know what you're talking about. I haven't had a drink in three years.

Remodeling every aspect of a house, doing structural repairs and tearing a car engine apart and putting it back together while getting free labor and buying tools, supplies and materials at anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3rd of the cost are great skills to have though. I've easily added $50k to $60k to my house in the last 6 months with just my time and labor and a little help from a knowledgeable friend at a cost of around $1,500, and I've managed to not have to buy a replacement car for one that most people would have probably gotten rid of 2 years ago in the mean time.

I'd hate to see what videos you watch on youtube if beer pong vids are cluttering up your recommended feed, Nilbog.

I can't drink, vidiot. For the thousandth time...and btw you can play beer pong without the beer, but you'd have to be invited to a party first.

And so what if you've worked on your house and car, that's what everyone that doesn't have a mountain of gold bricks does. Hubbs was out there changing the brakes and putting on a new fan belt with me ONE HANDED.

You keep acting like you should get an award for adulting. This isn't a reality show.

Say it a thousand more, because nobody cares and nobody is paying attention to you, Nilbog.

You act as if you should get an award for being the shittiest person on the internet. This isn't a reality show.

And, BTW, I'll remind you of your original point since your pill popping has obviously lead to brain damage. It was about spending time wisely and learning. Which I'm doing. A lot of it via youtube.

You first tell me that all I learn from youtube is beer pong and some other stupid shit, which isn't the case, then you insult me for learning how to do stuff to improve my life and my situation in life. Your and idiot and your only purpose in this conversation is to try to get under my skin and to win an argument you think we're having.

Go terrorize your family if you need to get your kicks. You realize that all of you on the left here are just simply awful people at this point, don't you?

I guess the trade off is that someone in your family tree might do something that has the police come knocking at your door. That would be a bummer. But also karma at work.

Yeah... um... nothing I'm doing is standard house maintenance, Nilbog.

That's why there are businesses who get paid big bucks to do what I'm learning how to do for free.

As usual, you don't make a smidgen of sense. What would my mom skillz have to do with the politician I support?

Although, supporting a wanna-be fascist and pathological liar, yeahhhh, that does make you kind of a shit person, and more than likely a shit parent.

I mean, the guards at Auschwitz were just as crap as their leader, right?

Wait...I don't even want to know your thoughts on the Holocaust.

PS.Every time you use the words "on full display for everyone here" I have to laugh. No one here cares what you and I argue about, and if they do then they have an agenda.

You have no evidence of anything you're saying about Trump. He's just a politician, just like any politicians that you support.

Once upon a time, people believed that you got sick because someone cursed you. Once upon a time, people believed that the earth was flat and that the sun revolved around it. Once upon a time, people believed that thunder was mighty Thor, pounding away on his anvil.
