How dare they! Wouldn't the "traditional American values" he speaks of, dictate they be thankful for these Democrap educators giving them a solid voter base!

First minute and I'm already laughing:
"They told us what they wanted - to turn our children into little socialists, little communists and little humanists..."

Strangely, I can't wait to watch more. Thx for the link, Jo.

ETA: "50% of adult Americans are illiterate..." well there ya go! You're welcome, Trump!

BREAKING NEWS from decades ago is revealed to Libtards, and now your heads are exploding.

Whole Word method was developed in the 1830s, and has never worked better than Phonics.
Since Phonics was widely used and successful in America before the invention of The Department of Educamation (and American Education was ranked 2nd in the World), the newly created Department of Educamation strove to replace this working system with the non-working system (so that we could achieve our current ranking of 37th in the World).
Most reasonable folks have known for at least the past couple decades about this Dumbing Down Campaign by Libtards/Progressives - because more illiterate children means more low-information liberals at the polls when they grow up. But it seems that many Libtards around here have still got their heads stuck in the sand.

I don't even recall if this was started in the 80's or as late as the 90's.

Haven't looked at that video, I wonder how many decades old it is. But libtards will always be shocked when exposed to Truth and Facts, so it never hurts to repeat old news for the masses, including illiterate Libtards.

Regarding the thread title, Propaganda was a word used by the Third Reich, and it was defined as "Truth" - so no surprise that current Democraps continue to copy and emulate Nazis by using that term while propagating the lies they have spread in this thread thus far.

JO, did you even bother to look this up?

When I learned to read, I was taught by phonics. Not eezee beekawz, az yu noh, Inglish iz naht fohnetik.

But it's close enough to capture thousands of words and many times more parts of words, allowing the reader to take an educated guess as to what the word is. You yourself want English to be even MORE phonetic, as do I.

Now, somewhere along the way the school system switched over to "sight words" and "whole word reading" when dear daughter was learning to read, and it was a disaster. Parents like me remember being taught by phonics, and raised a fuss, and after flogging this non-functional system for a decade they promised to go back to phonics.

Au contraire! Apparently this "sight word" approach is an idea that will not die, altho it deserves to. Common Core STILL requires that a list of words be recognized by sight! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sight_word if you look up education material offerred online there is a plethora of sight word material.

https://www.education.com/magazine/article/firstgradesightwords/
https://seisdborrego.ss4.sharpschool.com/common/pages/DisplayFile.aspx
?itemId=2063812

https://www.superteacherworksheets.com/sight-words-unit-8.html

You yourself have said that this approach is crazy-making. Why do they keep flogging this method?

I don't know if this is a conspiracy to dumb everyone down, but it DOES point to serious flaws in our education system. It seems that every decade or so, someone decides that the system isn't working and so they introduce some sort of radical reform. Do you remember "new math"? Instead of keeping what works and tweaking what doesn't, someone gets a bee in their bonnet and rips everything down. And because we now have Common Core - which was supposed to be force for good - we now have Common Disaster.

I don't remember how I learned. I just remember learning at home, well before we were being taught in school. I do remember being used to help other kids learn, particularly when it came to writing words via copying sentences the teacher wrote on the board. The one thing I remember was the awareness that I knew how to do something that just came naturally and not being able to understand why others didn't just pick it up, and it's probably the first time I felt the frustration of not being able to just make somebody else immediately understand what I knew.

It's no wonder that as kids get older, the smart kids are picked on and bullied around. Being the head of the class was a source of pride when I was in the early years of school. By Junior High I was the quiet kid that sat in the back of class and never raised his hand and hoped the teacher wouldn't ask me anything. By high school, I didn't really care about learning anymore and just skated by in all my classes, finishing all of my homework in study hall, never studying for any tests, and no doubt letting my parents down with my straight B average.

You were probably taught at home with Phonics - the easy way. And then the class was not allowed to learn because of the illiteracy experiment Whole Word being forced upon your class. Since you had already learned the right way, they must have been pissed that they couldn't un-learn you, or re-educate you, like all good progressives want.

Try timeline logic.
When was the Department of Educamation invented? Hint: Republicans had the good sense to not create it, but dimwit Democraps in the form of Cotta embraced this method of devolving American Education superiority.
When was the Whole Word failure instituted by DOE as the method to prevent American children from learning language? It was not during the 1970's, or before.

Correction:
Libtards are not the Left as a whole. Not all Liberals are Libtards.

Liberals seem to believe in their Liberal delusions, without ever being exposed to Truth, Fact, Reality. Normally, once these units enter the real world, have their earnings confiscated through taxation, or are exposed to the ludicrous suppositions of their beliefs, they mature into conservatives. Their brainwashing from Public School indoctrination erodes away.
In other words, Liberalism has a cure. Truth, Fact, Information, and Maturity usually work.

Libtards are those who, when confronted with views opposing thier beliefs, subvert their logic and intellect to avoid reality and remain cocooned in their delusions. A good example is when Democraps explain that they were making drastic cuts in the Federal Budget by cutting the Federal Budget from $9 Trillion all the way down to $11 Trillion. Another is Partial Birth Abortion, when they proclaimed that it simply did not exist, it never happened (which is obviously harder to claim now). They are forced to subvert their recognition of reality in order to maintain their delusional beliefs.
If there is a cure for Libtardism, I am not certain what it is.

All the suppozed 'phonics' methodz are only haf assed attempts to mask the basic problem with English spelling.

They actually rely on massiv repetition. There are many commercial training programz that desperate parents uv underachieving children buy that do the same. Hooked On Phonics wuz the most well known. Maybe it still iz.

Back wen I researched it about 15 yirz ago, the complete program consisted uv a haf dozen boxez full uv readerz and CDz that tortured children with mind numming repetativ word lists. It wuz sumwhere around 800$ for the entire set.

I found countless advertizements from parents selling their practically new sets, bekuz few peepl were able to fors their kidz to stick with it for more than a week.

English is made up of a lot of words from a lot of languages, and the spelling rules - as well as the grammatical rules! like octopuses v octopi - are different between the various foreign sources. So there are historical reasons for the inconsistencies. I don't see that as a problem when it comes to using phonetic spelling, though. It's just an explanation.

But I think there's at least one huge issue with adopting phonetic spelling. English is used all around the globe. Good luck with changing how English is spelled everywhere! And if you try teaching just phonetics in the US (versus both phonetics and standard), then US citizens will be crippled reading English everywhere else. It'd be like trying to read and write a foreign language in other English-speaking countries, or even on the internet.

It's bad enough US children are at an education disadvantage compared to everywhere else. I don't think it'd be a good idea to cripple them even further, by making them globally deficient in reading and writing their own language.

Though I'm smarter than the average bear, I don't think that is why I was so good at picking up reading compared to everybody else. I also don't think that my parents were better at teaching than teachers themselves were either. I don't remember ever learning by lessons from them. I just have very fond memories of both of them being with me at bedtime when I was really little and them reading to me before they got divorced. I also remember "reading" a book back to them one night. I knew I couldn't actually read it, but I knew that story by heart and just told it back to them while flipping the pages. Somewhere along the lines I just learned how to read.

I'd go so far as to say that a large problem with the low rates of learning how to read and write properly in this country is that we start teaching kids too late at school, particularly if the parents haven't been regularly reading to their children at home. "Who's got time for that shit today? I've got Netflix".

I'm not a great speller. These days you really don't have to be since your web browser and word processing software can tell you when you got something wrong 98% of the time.

That being said, make sure you know when to use to/too/two, there/their/they're and the like, and you'll be okay on the spelling front in 2019. If you don't know how to use those words, you're not misspelling words, but you're using the wrong word that just happens to sound the same and that does come off as pretty dumb.

Anybody who equates bad spelling with stupidity is as wrong as somebody thinking you're stupid if you don't get advanced math. Intelligence comes in a lot of forms. But if you're doing it all the time online you do come off as really lazy. Those red squiggly lines you always see are trying to tell you something.

It's an interesting exercise and points up the idiocy of English spelling. But there ARE consistent spelling rules in English, it's just that there are about three main languages mashed together.

I took French and German and I can see both rules operating in English, depending on the word origin. After that you can see Latin, Greek, Spanish etc. The English language is like a giant gumball, it rolled around and picked up all kinds of words.

In German, when you have ie or ei, the first vowel is silent. Bier is pronounced beer, and stein (stone) is pronounced like stine. In French ier is pronounced like ee-ay (frontier is pronounced frontee-ay) but the English hated the Normans so they pronounced it like eer, fronteer. Ei makes the ay sound.

But if you want to see a seriously confusing language, try welsh.

Who's a dumb wittle knuckle-dragger?? That's right, YOU ARE!

But among the people I hang out with - not here - I'm almost average.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

There are/were a few people here that I've always thought were genuises, mostly on teir abilty to see the world with independent/unique perspectives, based on their ability to learn (ie teach themselves): KIKI, SIX, BYTEMITE, KWICKO, FREM, and DREAMTROVE.

Everybody else seems content to hunker down in a trench that has been dug for them by someone else ... either the liberal-media trench, or the conservative-media trench, or the military-training trench. In fact, when confronted with reality, most people seem intent on digging themselves even further into their trench, never to stick their heads above ground to see what's going on.

I still hav the book my mom red to me wen I wuz 3 & 4. "Bugs Bunny's Chimney adventure".

Around the same time, I recall in preskool the class being gathered in frunt uv the teacher az she wuz riting wordz on the blak bord. I wuz behind everybody, seeing how they enthuziasticly yelled out each word. She must hav had a talent for teaching. But I wuz not happy and not partisipating, bekuz the spelling didnt make sens to me.

JO

I don't think I can fully appreciate where you're coming from, since reading was a completely transparent process for me. It just happened, way before kindergarten at age 4, without effort or thought on my part.

I actually wish English WAS phonetic, even though my solution is the pronunciation guides at the bottom of the page in dictionaries, and even though that means creating more letters for each of the sounds.

That said, I don't think it's doable unless you can move the entire English-using planet in that direction.

I THINK I understand your basic hang-up on that point, since it seems you're using a language that your brain just isn't built for. It must be difficult.

Just out of curiosity, do you know a foreign language? MOST non-English Indo-European languages are phonetic. Do you have difficulty with them? (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese are excepted, that I can think of, which are tonal and use characters. And I don't know enough about middle-eastern languages to say either way.)

Well, you, Jack and Brenda are the only reasons left for me to be here. And even though we come from very different places, I appreciate being able to discuss ideas with JSF. And JAYNEZTOWN is a voice out of the ether who comes through from time to time. I also miss BYTEMITE, KWICKO, FREM, and DREAMTROVE, and a few others like Chris,IsAll, and not just for the variety of ideas, but for the basic decency of being able to just discuss what's the what.

That's sweet of you, Kiki.

I'd hate to let what other people tell us about our genitals get in between us.

Honestly, I don't know why I come here. Kind of feels like being one of the ones annoying the bartenders and owners when the place is ready to close for the night. But as long as Haken keeps the lights on, I'm sure I'll still be here. The whole social media thing out there isn't really my scene.

Kinda sad that some of the people I used to know aren't around here anymore. I hadn't even realized they left until I sobered up and hardly anybody was here anymore.

Anybody ever hear from Dreamtrove?

Even though Frem's last thread here was fairly intimidating, I hope he's doing well.

I am not surprised there is more than one here.

Sci-Fi tends to attract a congregation of higher-than-average intelligence.

I only recently discovered that jigsaw puzzles might be similar. I just assumed everybody enjoyed them. But local libraries keep setting out puzzles for patrons to solve, and I am learning that many folk just cannot understand the concept. Many seem to think they are like Lincoln Logs or Legos, to be just forced together. Others think they are just for scrambling or breaking. And parents teach them ow to destroy them.

"I just assumed everybody enjoyed them (jigsaw puzzles)." I like the challenging unique ones (for example, those with a non-rectangular shape), but not the 1000 piece ones with tons of blue sky and pieces that are virtually identically shaped, because those are just tedious. :)

OTOH the 3-d ones just fry my brain and are no fun at all !!

How about you?

The global educational system was created to meet the needs of industry. The science's were valued above all else. Even though our children are organic and develop in that fashion, we funnel them through the system linearly, a straight or nearly straight line. As though they were cattle going through a shoot to be branded.

While glancing at some of the posts here by our conservative trolls, I can't but wonder if they want to accept the fact that they are responsible for their collective not having any commonsense?

I kind of enjoy that, but once I developed a system it became less fun. Maybe I need to get myself a book of hard ones, that don't get solved so easily.

Something I like is freecell. Something I just started playing is an electronic version of 'go' set to 'hard'. Over the last 3 weeks, since I reset it from 'easy', skipping 'medium' and going all the way over to 'hard', plus giving it the first move, I've only won once. I've figured the trick is to take the corners, the question is what are the heuristics to manage to do that without having to think every move individually four or five steps ahead of time.
