Supreme court rules Trump can use Pentagon funds for border wall; Guatemala agrees to require migrants traveling through it to the U.S. to seek asylum there
President Trump won two victories on his border agenda Friday, with the Supreme Court allowing the use of military funds to expand the barrier on the Mexican border while Guatemala agreed to serve as gatekeeper for asylum seekers trying to get to the U.S.

In a 5-4 decision, the justices of the U.S. high court said President Trump can shift about $2.5 billion in military funds to construct an additional 100 miles of wall at the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to seal off the U.S. from illegal immigration.

In February, Mr. Trump had declared a national emergency in order to divert a total of $6.7 billion from military and other sources, without the approval of Congress, which had signaled willingness to give him far less. Lower courts had barred the transfer of some of the funds desired by the president, but the Supreme Court on Friday ordered those lower court rulings to be suspended.

Thanks for posting about asylum in Guatemala. I knew that a country had agreed to it, but I couldn't remember which one. It still doesn't help at all with illegals coming in from Mexico itself, but that eliminates anybody from any country south of us except for Belize.

I believe I heard there was money involved. The phrase I caught was "invest in your great country". It might have been a threat like with Mexico... control the refugees or it's gonna cost you in tariffs ... or it might have been a promise ... control your refugees and we'll invest in your great country. Or possibly a bit of both. But I'm sure that Guatemala needed some convincing to do the right thing; it's otherwise so easy just to keep exporting the migrant problem to the hated gringos up north.

It's not bigotry. It's a legitimate problem. We've had politicians in the left and the right lying about doing anything about it for decades. And now we've got politicians on the left screeching for complete open borders in 2019.

Between getting the SCOTUS to give him the money from the pentagon (not robbing the treasury), and Guatemala becoming the country that will make those south of the Mexican border looking for asylum in America now lawbreakers, Trump managed to do what no president before him had the will or the desire to actually do.

What should happen, and if government was run like any decent corporation in the world, would be that Trump is fired by the Senate after about a week of deliberations, then he is escorted out of the White House by the Secret Service, and V.P. Mike Pence takes charge. Then Congress picks a new Vice President, just in case Pence does not work out. That is how Nelson Rockefeller became V.P.

As you might be aware, a Congress controlled by Democrats tossed Nixon into the trash can. But before doing that, they tossed out Nixon's Vice President Spiro Agnew. They didn't want stinking Agnew in the White House, smelling up the place. That was back when the economy was booming and Apollo was landing on the Moon twice a year. Once Congress filled up with irresponsible Republicans, the boom ended, and the Space Program shrunk to insignificance. There is a connection between that and the GOP take over of government. An analogy might help Signym to understand. Imagine a house that has inside 11,000,000 flies, bees and ants. The "house" is the US, the 11,000,000 is the estimated number of illegal aliens. Signym wants the bugs out of her house. Signym places ant-repellent around the outside (not the inside) of the house. "Ant-repellent" is Trump's Mexico Wall. Why Signym does not use ant-repellent on the North side of her house, the Canadian side, I will never know. That ant-repellent will not stop the flying bugs, the 67% of illegal migrants arriving at airports with visas which will expire before the illegal migrant leaves. And the ant-repellent does not stop the 11,000,000 bugs already living and breeding inside Signym's house. As for your analogy, any exterminator is going to make sure that no more can get in before getting rid of the problem inside.

I just went through this shit myself with a racoon problem. I successfully got rid of the first one (or family), only to have another one take up residence a week later.... because I didn't secure my border.

It took an ammonia gas attack to remove the second one before I could block everything off.

Unfortunately, we don't have anything at our disposal that would target only illegals. The closet (and scariest) thing we supposedly have on the market is agents which will target demographic groups by their DNA signatures. This would not work at all however, since one's citizenship is not written into their DNA.

The first thing that needs to be done is to close off the borders and make them air-tight. Then we get rid of illegals inside. Once the number is more manageable and we're not making a guess about how many we have (+/- 20 Million), then it would be much easier to monitor those with Visas after they've expired.

And yes. They should be monitored. They are not citizens, and too many who have come before them ruined it for the rest of them.

Holy shit, 6ix! The Federal government does not have to pick one or the other. It can do the first and the second and the third thing simultaneously because it is different groups solving different parts of the same problem. If you read "ICE announces results of Operation Border Guardian/Border Resolve" for Aug 1, 2019, you will see that ICE has been pitiful at removing your 35 million illegal aliens. ICE removed only hundreds. ICE needs to hurry it up by a factor of 1,000. They don't have forever. Trump vowed millions of immigration arrests in dramatic raids. Didn't happen and he didn't explain why not.

You are so very wrong. There is one group in government that approves visas. That group gave visas to 2/3rds of illegal aliens now living in America. There is another group that does only the borders. There is a third group that roams around the country like the Texas Rangers, going where they please, looking for illegals. Then there is a fourth group that handles the legal proceedings for deporting illegals. All those groups need to get on with their jobs simultaneously if they are ever going to remove the 35 million illegals you think are in America. Personally, I don't think Trump has actually given the orders to make it happen. He has only pretended to.

You turn 4 entities into 1 by coordinated the 4 at the highest level, the White House. You definitely do not jam all 4 into one oversized agency. Does Trump look like the guy who can coordinate them? I think not. He can't even select permanent people to head the agencies. Instead, he is using acting heads and temporaries. It is a guarantee that nothing gets done, like his raids to remove millions of illegal long-time resident migrants shrinks to only hundreds of illegals.

About the Democratic debates. It is the twitterization of politics -- Trump shoots off his mouth that he is for something, like a big and beautiful wall along the border, and the candidates who are not thinking will tweet back on the stage that they are against. Any Democrat or Republican who thinks like they are tweeting is too stupid to be President. I've got an example of stupid:

Trump thinks he either has to threaten them with death/bankruptcy or he completely capitulates to them. The guy has no real understanding of negotiation, outside of real estate. Trump needs to know the details of what the other side wants and only gives them some of it. But with Trump it is all or nothing. He ends with nothing too often because he has no workable theory about what is in the other, powerful person's mind. For weak people, Trump understands them. For powerful people? Trump gets it wrong too often.
