I'v never liked being an employee.

Its more than just a feeling uv being owned, its a basic fact. The attitude uv employerz iz that they hav purchased your time, so you hav no say in wut they do with that time. And if meeting their demandz happenz to require you to modify wut you do in the time you havent sold to them, its not their problem.

Are big companyz are the worst? I dont no. They commonly hav a cattle ranch attitude, impozing all sorts uv onerous rulez, forsing overtime, suppressing wajez and regularly dumping thouzandz uv workerz at a time, all in the name uv maximizing profits.

But 12 yirz ago I turned down an offer uv 70K$ per yir kuz there wuz sumthing weird about the owner uv the small company I wuz making stuff for.

I'm packing boxez at an injection molding plant now. I hav no aptitude for it, so regularly fall behind. It suprized me that I didnt get axed within a month, but now I no its kuz they are having trubl keeping peepl from quitting. Very hi turnover.

Plus, we are getting less than 1% uv the sale prise per box, so they dont care too much.

Yeah. Sorry man. I completely empathize with you.

Finally thought I found a great fit for me. Got a great workout, made my own schedule, nobody managed me because I did 3 times what anybody else did and they were just happy to have me there.

Then they get rid of overnights, fire half of middle management, replace them with by the book assholes that make breaks for nobody and offer me a replacement job where I'd have to deal with customers, work whenever they feel like scheduling me any time of day any day of the week, shifts that are half as long as the ones I was getting and 10 hours less on average per week than I was getting before.

I don't ask for much, but apparently that's too much in 2019.

Work sucks. :(

Yep, tell me about it.

Before I retired I worked as a "professional" but they would still make random and nonsensical demands. One year they made us write down everything we had done for the past TWO YEARS in 15-minute increments, I kid you not! My last entry in that list was "spent 8 hours filling out this form".

I think any one of us could have told management ten different ways to do anything better, but they weren't interested in that.

But it's like they say: The only thing worse than working is not working.

It's funny. Until you made this thread, JO, I had assumed that you found a job that was at least somewhat on par with your abilities. Seems you're working down in the muck, in those dirty waters I've been treading the last 10 or so years.

I think guys like us need to start our own companies, JO.

I know that my brain isn't wired to do my best work around somebody else's schedule... especially when the job consists of meaningless work.

The only thing that got me through my recent job and even enjoying it was that I told myself I was doing it for the workout and I literally made good on that and got back my 25 year old body over the last year and a half. If I hadn't done that, I would have gone nuts doing such a stupid job beneath my ability for as long as I did.

I fixed my car last year. Probably going to learn how to fix a porch with severe structural issues this year. Well... either that or learn how to sell a house that needs a lot of work for an amount I'm willing to accept.

Starting a business can't be that hard, can it?

What do you think we could do?

In the mean time... good luck with the report. At the end of the day if she likes what you have to say, she will take credit for any positive changes going forward. You won't get any recognition for your contributions, but at least you might not hate your job duties as much after the changes are implemented if you don't allow yourself to dwell on that fact.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Similar situation here.

I get to take a break wenevr I want for az long az I want wen I'm working in my own shop, so over the last 15 yirz, I got kinda marshmellowy. All the litl
muslz that keep you standing, sitting up, keeping your armz up in front uv you etc had atrofied in spite uv occasional work outs and hard work on projects.

Wen I started this job, I'd get a back ake after just haf an owr! Now I can be on my feet all day and feel OK. And I'v lost 20 poundz.

Good to hear that at least it's making you healthier too.

I remember how hard my current job was those first few months and all of the aches and pains I'd go home with only working 7 hour shifts and now I usually work at least 9 1/2 hours without any pain. Unless I'm getting paid a good amount somewhere down the road, I plan on only working jobs that require a lot of physical labor. I have to at least be getting a workout while making next to nothing.

Yeah... I really wasn't talking the paperwork though. I'm fairly good at stuff like that, and pretty much a jack of all trades and quick to learn things if I don't already know them.

But marketing and sales was never a strong suit of mine.

I guess I was lucky. I had planned on retiring in 2021, but in 2015 my company made us old-timers an offer to retire early that was too sweet to refuse. It was very weird at first, waking up to get ready for work, and then realizing I didn't have to do any of that.

lol. Yeah. The longer I remain single the more I realize having getting hitched at some point might not have been the worst idea in the world.

When my friend was over the other day and we were making a plan to fix up my house, he was also going ot be coming over to take a bunch of stuff I was getting rid of, including 4 large box speakers that were hella-expensive when they were new. He wanted to integrate them in a bar he was going to build in his basement.

When we were out by the garage and I showed them to him though, he said "yeaaaaah... I kind of feel when I take something in I have to get rid of something else. My fiencee is going to kill me if I bring these home with me."

I laughed and said that not having a woman around to tell me no when I was taking all of this crap in was what got me into this situation in the first place. She's probably right.

I then went on to show him all of the stuff in my garage that I haven't even gone through yet that I need to get rid of, such as a broken lawnmower, broken leaf blower, broken weed wacker and broken power washer that I never even spent 3 seconds ever trying to fix. Except for the power washer, I have working versions of all of these tools. There is no need to accumulate all of that crap. The road to hell being paved with good intentions and all of that.

Good you're keeping busy though. My old man manages to do so and has been retired for 12 years now and is doing just fine. I know some people who didn't live very long after retirement though. I'm pretty sure I'll be one of them unless I can find some sort of self motivation, so I plan on working at least part time for the rest of my life.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Whoa!

Please Note: The following comments come with no money back guarantee or warranty and should be consumed with a huge grain of salt. Caveat Emptor!

Jo - you are a straight up artist. No question. It can be hard to create in the bubble that is one's own home/life and have any perspective on one's work. That is very impressive/ I have a lot of suggestions and questions - continue at your own risk:

1. You need better images, imho. A lot better - maybe you know that, just reinforcing if you do. Do you know a pro photographer? Think about it. It's a visual world! Backgrounds, lighting, creating a more uplifting setting... like I said, you may already know this, jic.
2. How much?
3. What's the cube made of? I wish it could be suspended magnetically.
4. The random grid design is awesome - aesthetically pleasing on it's own, reminds me a bit of the Bird's Nest.
5. Do you have more? Are they being shown by anyone, any gallery? There are so many venues this could be shown and sold in, of all sizes.
6. I think the only thing keeping you from selling these and making a full time living from the sales is you (naturally). You definitely have the vehicle right in front of you. Life is soooo short - take a leap, commit!

IMPORTANT: Did I mention this advice is worth nothing and could be dangerous?

Good luck!

Good segjestionz, CC. Youre rite, I am the main obstacle to my own success. Arent we all?

Got a call frum the recruiter lady frum the temp ajensy this morning. I'm dun packing boxez! Axed! Do not hav to go in tonite! WOOOOHHHHOOOOO!!!!

The sirkumstansez are a little odd...

The lead (like a foreman) went thru sum effort last nite to get my internet akses to the employee compliance* website, so it seemz he wuz not aware uv my imminent dismissal. The supervisor wuz also involved with that.

Wut woud make sens iz that sumwun opened the envelope containing my report, even tho it wuz sealed and labeled for the temp ajensy woman and in the mail bin hanging on her offis door.

Even tho I spent alot uv time trying to make it constructiv and uninsulting, therez no way to put a pozitiv spin on most uv the problemz they hav. So I can understand how they mite take offens and fire me.

Hard to describe wut a hyooj relief it wuz. I wuz alredy rezined to forsing myself to get to sleep so I coud wake up at 4pm latest and get redy for the next 12 owr deth march.

Suddenly I can stay awake az long az I want. Post here without worrying about how I'm spending my time. I can get back to work on the new campane paje. I can get back to work on the next GRaVMIL experiment.

Its incredibl how much work I can get dun now that I dont hav to go to work!

*I jiveth ye not, they call it compliance training! All the employeez hav to complete a regular seriez uv online lessonz. This iz from the company that haz redused them to 7 holidayz per yir, instituted manditory overtime, and iz ending all bonusez this yir.

It coud be that the upper manajment regularly referz to the workerz az 'slavez' amongst themselvez, so they dont realize how demeaning 'compliance training' soundz.

JO, you are a fabricator and artist par excellence. I agree with CC ... you need to find a venue for your creations. Possibly you could turn your artistic flair and skills towards something more pedestrian but maybe more marketable, such as custom metalwork (doors, railings, etc) for the very wealthy. OTOH, it you can find a gallery for your work, it may not be necessary.

BTW, I had some comments on your platform. They're in the "my platform" thread. http://www.fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=63022&p=3

First Norm quote seems appropriate: "Great, I'm unemployed..."

I worked a summer job for the City once. It was hell - humans doing the mindless work that robots were meant for. It was almost comical. About 15 of us were each given a stack of papers 2 feet high and told to look at the dates on each sheet. If they were between x dates they went in one pile, y dates another pile. 8 hours of that. And a battle ax of a boss, "No Talking!"

Driving in on the morning of my fifth day I saw my exit coming up and I just blew right past it. I just kept going. That feeling of relief was incredible. That was a teaching moment for sure. I only wish I could say it was the last crap job I ever had.

That's pretty cool, actually.

Can't say that I've ever just actually drove the other way when I decided I wasn't going to do it anymore.

This is the second time in my life that I've let it be known that I wasn't going to put up with the new terms of our arrangement. It's only the first time that I have no regrets though. Lost quite a bit of income the first time I decided that I didn't feel like eating a shit sandwich every day.

But that's the beauty part of making dick. I can go anywhere and make dick.

I was laughing about that when I talked to my old man about all of this the other day. I've got 22 years until retirement, and it wouldn't surprise me if I had at least 15 more jobs until that glorious day.

Something we can agree on.

Though I haven't worked fast food, I've worked just about every other bottom of the barrel job out there, and I can tell you that this article isn't lying.

The worst job I probably ever had was loading trucks at UPS back in my late teens. Got up at 2:30AM to get to work at 4:30AM for a 4.5 hr shift, 5 days a week. Bundled up to the gills because it was winter and you're essentially outside (I also worked at FedEx a few years later during the summer loading trucks, which surprisingly was not nearly as bad as UPS, but it easily got over 100 degrees in those trucks and I'd drink 2 gallons of work in a 5 hour shift).

But the most oppressive thing about the job was the constant monitoring and the impossible task that was laid before you every day. There were invisible sensors on the chutes leading down to the belts in the trucks, and anytime they were tripped an EXTREMELY LOUD BUZZING occurred along with siren lights and soon a manager coming your way to yell at you to pick it up on top of it.

I've been the hardest working and quickest worker at any job that I've ever worked, and even at 40 years old that hasn't changed. Yet, nothing you ever did at UPS was ever good enough.

I'd imagine that unlike fast food, nothing much has changed in the 20 years since I worked at UPS. They were pioneers in this wretched technology and oppressive work vehicle. Maybe they've just gotten rid of the manager's salary completely though and now Alexa or Siri verbally abuses you over the screaming alarms and siren lights when you fail to live up to their impossible standards.

Heh - worked for UPS one Christmas season in Minnesota, and I was the outside guy all day - no joke. I didn't get up that early, thank gawd, but we'd go late into the night. I'd get picked up around 6am and then they'd drop me in some neighborhood with this tubular double wheel barrel type thing and an s-ton of packages, "see you in 1 hour." The stupid thing had no sides, just a few bars and packages would constantly fall out into the snow.
The mandate was ALWAYS leave the package no matter what, even if you had to go around back. It was a lot of hustle in the snow wrestling with this stupid carrier, but I didn't mind - good exercise. And it paid well - really well.
Only real bad part were the occasional a-hole dogs. Fuggers - bless 'em but daaaamn. And you couldn't always tell which houses would have them - you just rolled the dice. This one house, I couldn't leave the package out front because they didn't have a screen door and no bushes to hide the package behind, so I headed to the gated back yard. Yep. 2 big huskies came after me, so I bolted. I met up with the driver (a woman) about a half hour later and let her know I had one 'no delivery.' She took us back to the address and got the box, and walked up to the gated back yard. The dogs came running up again, barking like crazy, and she just opened the gate and walked in. She just talked to the dogs the whole time like she knew them. They kept barking but she got in and out without anything else. "Well fuk me." Another sh*t job teaching moment.
And yes, to your experience, I saw the same cruel-ish demands on employees and that crazy mind set of "OBEY your UPS Masters!" Each level manager just passed on the beating they got from above to the people below them. That seems like one of the core themes of corporate America.

The worst job I ever had was telephone sales, on commission.

*mic drop*

I've worked at jobs that were physically more demanding, like the recycling center where we'd load 12 or more tons of paper into trucks.

I've worked at jobs that were more dangerous, like air pollution testing where I had to climb up smokestacks (yep, real smokestacks, like the kind you see sticking up into the air. Ever notice the ladders and catwalks on the side?) some of them 200 ft high, and get exposed to all kinds of pollution. (I have some interesting stories to tell about refineries and other industries if you want to hear them!)

I've worked at jobs that kept me up all hours.

But the worst was telephone sales.
It does NOT fit my introverted personality!

Jo is not having to be anyone's slave right now, so I wouldn't blame him if he didn't put a sleeping bag in the back of that GM boat of his and head for a coast.

Call Center phone sales would be hell on earth. I did phone support, which could be bad (if people were a-holes about things they broke), but not as bad as sales I would imagine - at least we were actually helping people..

Yeah man... UPS was the most thankless job I ever had. At least the delivery drivers and helpers got paid decently. I didn't know that until recently. The package handlers were worked like dogs and didn't get paid squat for it. This would have been back around 1998 and I made $8.00/hr, part time with no benefits other than some minor accumulated PTO. (If I put in a year with the company, they would have also put up $1.00/hr for college expenses, but I didn't last more than about 3-4 months there before literally telling a manager to take this job and his clipboard and shove it up his ass).

Even with all the changes at [company name redacted] before I was laid off, it's still not nearly as bad as UPS was all the way back in 1998. But I do see a lot of parallels, and the way things are going I could see it getting that bad. The new asshole running the store is a robot, and aims to strip all human interaction between co-workers, managers and subordinates. What was once lauded as a great place to work is becoming just another soulless and lifeless organism.

Shame.... :(

That doesn't always work with guys tho. My mom and I had 4 chi mixes in 30 years and two of them hated any male they saw, whether it was 9-90. And from personal experience going to church with black people when I was younger, most chihuahuas HATE black people. The dark color screams "intruder" to the dogs. Many of the black people I knew were terrified of chi's and I've heard many of them say they hate all dogs for the same reason. There have been a bunch of vids lately where black postal people just spray ANY dog that gets near them, probably because they never do know if they will be attacked. Having been attacked by a larger miniature doberman before, I can see where they are coming from.

I figure that the dogs that act hostile around black people are just raised in areas where there usually aren't any black people.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't see any reason why any type of dog that saw black people interact with their owners on at least a semi-regular basis would have a problem with them. I'd have to say the same thing about black people actually owning one of these breeds that supposedly don't like them either from the time they were pups.

This dude seems to have his Chihuahua on lock down pretty good. [WARNING: Do not watch with headphones, or at least have them turned down LOW!!!]

You seem to have a good sense of humor about it, JO.

Welcome to the world that's been Six Sigma'd.

The stuff you're dealing with at PeaPod is the stuff that all of my former co-workers are dealing with at the place that I'm still not comfortable naming by name yet. 20 years ago, legend has it, it was a fantastic place to work for. It wasn't very good by the time I got there, as most of the benefits and pay raises were already eliminated for those of us not grandfathered in. With the corporate restructuring that happened in July, it's just as bad as working for UPS, which is a terrible, terrible job.

Get out of there. Find something better. Your talents are wasted there, and you're too good for that place. I can't imagine it pays much, and the great thing about working jobs that pay shitty wages is that there are a ton of them to choose from.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Sorry to hear, Jo. Not sure why these places make work such a pain. They can't like having to constantly hire new people - what a chore that must be for them.

I worked at a bar in college. The owner didn't like that I wasn't constantly circling patrons pushing his cheap hooch, "Want another drink? Beer? Chips? Come on dude, down it and get another!" They moved me to bartender, which I wanted to do anyway - and it was a hell of a lot better.

Hopefully you'll find the same true of loader - sounds more bad@ss than shopper at least.

Cant just giv away money to workerz.

Meanwile, a frend had me send a rezume for a real maintenans job at a metal shop. He asked how much I wanted and I sed 30$ per owr. He sed the guy hoo quit wuz getting 19$.

Maybe thats why he quit? Du?

If offered, I will not take the job. Its day shift and further than Peapod, so I'd be blowing at least 3 owrz a day getting there & back.

I haven't made more than $11.72 an hour in the last 10 years, and the job before that was $8.25 an hour. I wouldn't turn down $19, but then again I wouldn't drive 1 1/2 hours one way either, so I'd turn that job down too.

Reminds me of another job I had. Electrical installation - dull as dirt but paid well. The only problem was wasting my life away in traffic 3 hours a day. I went to work in the dark, worked in the dark, and by the time I got home it was dark. Quit after 8 months and went to work in a record store 15 minutes away. Way less money, way more happy.

Keep swinging, Jo - it's out there.

Yeah... I watched the old man drive 2 1/2 hours one way out of state for a good paying job for 15 years. He seemed alright with it and never minded driving all that much. Late in his time there though, he was hit by a truck driver that fell asleep and somehow survived without a scratch even though his car was destroyed beyond repair.

I watched my mom and step dad commute to Downtown Chicago in Chicago rush hour traffic every single day for a decade, and it made them absolutely miserable. They didn't care much for their jobs either, but they made a good buck combined. They did that until they started their own business and years later when we re-connected they were entirely different people.

It's the huge negative of having a house. Back when I was making great money, I found an apartment complex right near the industrial location the office building was located. My drive to work was just over a mile.

Comparatively, I was driving 25 minutes and 40 miles round trip with a car that leaked 1 1/2 quarts of oil every time I went to work at my last job that made 1/6th of what I used to take home with zero benefits outside of a company match on the 401k.

I'm just going to look for minimum wage crap that's right down the street for me this time until I can fix the house up and get out of here. I'm done wasting any time in my life driving to work.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Tote maintainer 3rd shift iz a good job for me. I dont hav to uze my brain for anything and I get a good workout.

The pay will averaj out to around 15.50 and the drive iz about 20 minits each way. Then therez the 2,500$ hiring bonus!

Plus there are several invention opportunityz that coud earn me sum cash.

If you really are in Indiana, 6, you shoud see if Peapod iz hiring there.
I coud get 1,000 buks if you name me az a referens!

I feel you man! If you hav any enerjy left after work,
the drive saps it away.

I had a machining job strate east 18 milez. Took 30 minits to get there at 6 am, but 90 minits to get home leaving around 3pm.

IL route 176 haz long sectionz where you cant pass, so between traffic lites set up to stop you at every wun uv them and fully loaded trucks that gather speed insted uv akselerate, the road wuz just a long seriez uv parking lots.

I tried a bunch uv sercuitus alternate routs, but they never saved more than 10 minits wile adding a bunch uv milez.

I might look into that.

Be EXTREMELY careful earning cash through them for any inventions though. Read the fine print.

I'd hate to see you give something away that is worth a ton of money for them down the road and they only give you a paltry check for your brains.... or even worse just your hourly wage you were already getting.
