Real Clear Politics

"The skies are growing dark and increasingly ominous for dirty officials at the top of Obama-era law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Leading the "I'm really worried" list are James Comey, John Brennan, James Clapper, Loretta Lynch, and their senior aides, all political appointees. They expected Hillary Clinton to win in 2016 and bury any traces of malfeasance, just as they had buried hers. It didn't work out that way.

Now they need protection themselves. House Democrats and anonymous leakers are busy providing it. Many are delicately called "current and former senior officials" by the New York Times, Washington Post, and other legacy media. Gee, I wonder who they are?

These defenders of the old guard are sliming Attorney General Bill Barr, who heads the investigation into their actions. They have good reasons, if not clean hands, for their attack. First, they want to keep as much secret as they can. Exposure can only harm them. Their main argument is that any disclosures will damage U.S. national security. Second, they want to paint the disclosures and forthcoming indictments as President Trump's revenge, the illegitimate use of powerful agencies that should be nonpartisan. That, of course, is precisely what they are accused of doing.

Barr won't be deterred. He did not return for a second stint as AG to pad his résumé or protect Donald Trump. He returned to clean out the Augean Stables. He needs to muck out the mess left by his predecessors and find the horses that left it.

Barr is determined to do that. He intends to find out how and why the Department of Justice embarked on an all-consuming, two-year project to investigate Trump's alleged cooperation with Putin's Russia to win the presidency. The investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller found no such cooperation (going well beyond saying he simply could not indict). Now, Barr wants to understand the origins of the probe and whether the tools used to launch it were lies or distortions — and were known to be so by DoJ, FBI, and CIA officials. Barr wants to know if U.S. intelligence agencies were used to spy illegally on Americans, or if they outsourced that to friendly foreign services and then recovered the information from them. He wants to know if the investigations really began in July 2016, as the FBI testified, or earlier, and what evidence was used to begin them."

Many have been saying all this for a long time. I still have my doubts that Hillary and Obama's agents of darkness will ever see justice. This is much, much bigger than Watergate, yet most Americans don't know, don't wanna know, and definitely don't care. If the "rain" starts fallin' as Real Clear describes, it would mean huge scandals for Democrats and a walk-in-the-park election win for Trump.

I guess not. I'm not yet 100% jaded. I posted this thread because I found it both very refreshing and encouraging to see a source other than Fox News making these predictions. Real Clear Politics is almost "mainstream" for Sagan's sake!

It has to go forward for Trump's reelection campaign. The only way out can get really screwed up is if Barr limits the scope too narrowly so that only a few underlings are caught instead of ripping it all open

There was certainly enough real malfeasance committed to justify an investigation and probably enough to justify not only indictments but also convictions.

The question is, is Barr going after these people for political purposes, or to preserve our Constitutional rights? If Barr is just smacking Trump's enemies then he will focus on just the FISA warrant and whoever wrote and signed it. If he's looking to break open the intelligence agencies malfeasance then he will go as far afield as the UK, Australia, and the Ukraine and as high up as Brennan and whoever was DNI, as well as Obama's staff

Well, to be fair, I think you might be a little spiteful if you had a two year long unwarranted investigation done on your life and had the media telling people every single day that "This is the bombshell" that's going to bring you down.

I will say that your English is better than a lot of immigrants, but still lacking in important areas, like understanding. Quotes do not always mean literal, or exact. You've tipped your hand over that oops before, so not surprising you'd do it again. English is tough, so don't be too hard on yourself. They even say it's one of the hardest languages to learn.

Let me help:

Use Quotation Marks to Denote So-Called or Alleged
Quotation marks can be used to denote the idea of so-called, alleged, or supposed.

In Terrifying Interview, William Barr Goes Full MAGA
http://nymag.com/intelligencer/2019/05/william-barr-interview-cbs-muel
ler-coup-trump.html

After the legal Establishment had granted him the benefit of the doubt, Attorney General William Barr has shocked his erstwhile supporters with his aggressive and frequently dishonest interventions on behalf of President Trump. The spectacle of an esteemed lawyer abetting his would-be strongman boss’s every authoritarian instinct has left Barr’s critics grasping for explanations. Some have seized on the darker threads of his history in the Reagan and Bush administrations, when he misled the public about a secret Department of Justice memo and helped cover up the Iran-Contra scandal.

Later in the interview, Barr grossly contradicts Mueller’s findings with regard to Trump’s ties to Russia. “Mueller has spent two and half years, and the fact is, there is no evidence of a conspiracy,” he says. “So it was bogus, this whole idea that the Trump was in cahoots with the Russians is bogus.”

This is just a wild lie. Mueller was unable to establish a criminal conspiracy between Trump and Russia. He was unable to establish this, in part, because “some individuals invoked their Fifth Amendment right,” or “provided information that was false or incomplete,” or “deleted relevant communications.” Indeed, the two Trump campaign officials most closely linked to Russian cutouts, Paul Manafort and Roger Stone, refused to cooperate with prosecutors. A failure to establish a criminal conspiracy is not the same thing as finding “no evidence of a conspiracy.” Nowhere does the Mueller report say there’s no evidence of a conspiracy. Some of the potential conspiracy elements were unprovable — Mueller never figured out why Manafort gave 75 pages of polling data to a Russian agent.

Barr, amazingly, goes even farther to say the report proved “this whole idea that the Trump was in cahoots with the Russians is bogus.” In fact, the Mueller report notes that it did not even try to establish whether the campaign was “in cahoots” with Russia. The report states that it “applied the framework of conspiracy law, not the concept of ‘collusion.’”

The report in fact finds extensive evidence that Trump was in cahoots with Russia. His top campaign officials took a meeting with a Russian agent promising them help from the Russian government. Trump asked Russia on camera to hack his opponent’s emails, and they carried out a hacking attempt that day. Trump was pursuing a lucrative, no-risk business deal requiring Russian government approval during the campaign and lying about it, making him vulnerable to blackmail by Russia. Sharing an explosive secret that could destroy your campaign in order to potentially collect a massive payoff from a party that you know is doing illegal things to help you is the definition of being in cahoots.

Barr goes on to repeat Trump’s obsession with texts capturing the political chatter of Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, two romantically-involved FBI agents. “It’s hard to read some of the texts with and not feel that there was gross bias at work, and they’re appalling,” he tells Crawford.

There is, in fact, nothing unusual about FBI agents expressing political opinions. An investigation by the FBI’s Inspector General “did not find evidence to connect the political views expressed in these messages to the specific investigative decisions that we reviewed.” And no serious person doubts the overall weight of political opinion at the FBI leans rightward. The bureau has never had a Democratic director, and James Comey testified that, during the campaign, agents appeared to be leaking heavily to Rudy Giuliani. (Comey violated policy by scolding Clinton, and then publicly reopening the investigation, in part due to the pressure of the leaks from the FBI’s pro-Trump cabal.) Barr’s depiction of the FBI as a bastion of anti-Trump sentiment is grossly at odds with the evidence."

Gaslight. Obstruct. Project.

Classic Barr move. He's made a career of covering for crooks and traitors. I am absolutely shocked that the guy who covered up Reagan and Bush's treason and who wrote an authoritarian love letter to Trump would be acting this way.

Who could have ever seen this coming?

You'll note that I quoted a reputable source.

Typical response from a Trump minion. Haven't watched Maddow since I can't remember. She's way too shrill. Have you tried reading? Fewer commercials - you might like it.

Trump minion. That's a good one. I can't recall anything I've ever said here that would make that a legitimate burn, but whatever you say bro.

Back to reading again too, huh?

I read more books by the time I was 10 years old than you've ever read in your life, son.

I think you should try reading past the headlines of the articles you look at. I think you'll find they usually contradict the headlines in the last paragraph or two.

Beats the Nazis on 4chan, where you get yours.

Going to have to see proof of that. Do you have my IP history? If somebody here is logging on to 4chan, that would be news to me.

Maybe the racoon in my attic has a smart phone. I'd better disable my wi-fi.

This is the thing that REAVERSHIT still hasn't figured out: The Trump campaign was being bird-dogged by the FBI/MI6/NSA/CIA since well before his election. You would think that if there was any evidence of collusion* the real-time surveillance (which is what the FISA warrant authorizes - electronic as well as physical snooping) would have scared up SOMETHING: a phonecall, an email, a photograph, an internet packet ... But no.

If they had found something... some form of communication... they wouldn't have had to make up that ridiculous "dossier" or flog such tenuous connections, the evidence would have been developed already.

I can't understand what it is that simple logic seems to be so hard to grasp.

You're talking about people who think that they would find things in Trumps tax returns that the IRS wouldn't have already found.

WHO said that quote? Was it Barr??

No??

Did Barr actually SAY anything like that?

No??

I think you - literally - lied. "Barr said that the Mueller report exonerated Trump"

See how that works?

I will say that your English is better than a lot of immigrants, but still lacking in important areas, like understanding. Quotes do not always mean literal, or exact. You've tipped your hand over that oops before, so not surprising you'd do it again. English is tough, so don't be too hard on yourself. They even say it's one of the hardest languages to learn.

Let me help:

ng_alleged_so-called.htm

Use Quotation Marks to Denote So-Called or Alleged
Quotation marks can be used to denote the idea of so-called, alleged, or supposed.

Barr lied - use the Google. Or, just keep lying like some desperate drug addled, strung out high schooler.

Nonsense - I clearly admitted that Barr lied.
Keep ducking and dodging and straining though. It's not at all obvious.

Well, one thing you have made clear: when you go down in flames, you do so in spectacular fashion.

Glad I could quote this before you changed it again.

GSTRING, I know that writers often use quotes to express skepticism about a statement or phrase.

Putin says he wants peace doesn't mean the same thing as Putin says he wants "peace". The second sentence expresses the writer's doubt that "peace" is what Putin wants.

Barr lied versus Barr "lied" would be another example where the writer is expressing skepticism that Barr "lied" (exactly. Maybe more like "shaded the truth".)

Quotation marks are a writer's way of distancing her/himself from a particular statement by emphasizing that it was said by someone else, and is used to call the readers' attention to the a writer's skepticism about a particular turn of phrase or POV.

*****

Now, let's look at YOUR use of quotation marks:

Quote:

Duh - Of course. It has nothing to do with “justice” or Deep State or Truth ...
Here you mean to express your skepticism of the Trump administration's potential use of the word "justice" to explain its investigation of the investiators.

Quote:

However, unlike the Dems, Barr doesn't have to make shit up whole cloth. - SIGNY

He did literally, "Mueller report exonerates Trump." It did not, just the opposite in fact.- GSTRING

Well, it looks to me like you MEANT this as an actual (literal) quote, which you epically failed on because Barr said no such thing.

But if we use your quotation marks in its opposite-land meaning (To express doubt about what is being quoted) then you're expressing DOUBT that's what Barr said, and contradicting your own statement that you believe that Barr (literally) made shit up whole cloth.

So you were either attempting a (literal, direct) quote - which you can't back up, or you were undercutting your own statement that Barr "literally" made shit up whole cloth.

Either YOU made shit up whole cloth (the quote that wasn't) or you're expressing skepticism about it. Either way, you're in trouble. And if you meant something else, it's beyond English grammar.
