A fire has broken out at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, one of the city's most iconic sights.

The fire began at 6:50 p.m. local time Monday, the Paris fire department said, and continued to burn more than two hours later. An official from the French Interior Ministry says firefighters might not be able to save Notre Dame Cathedral, according to The Associated Press.

A spokesperson for the cathedral described the damage to French media as "colossal."

"Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame," the spokesperson said.

First responders are currently trying to salvage priceless art stored inside the cathedral, said Paris Deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire.

All artworks have been rescued.

Quote:

Images on social media show smoke and flames shooting from the top of Notre Dame as massive plumes of smoke billow into the sky above.

One video shows a spire toppling over as a result of the flames.

The fire may be connected to the recent restoration of the church, officials said.

I noticed the extensive catwalks

Last week, the statues of the apostles were removed for restoration, The Associated Press reported.

The roof has completely collapsed, witness John Dickas, an American professor living in Paris, told ABC News.

Large crowds have begun to gather around the scene. Some members of began to sing at the sight of the burning cathedral.

The cathedral was built around 1260 AD and towered over the city of Paris for centuries. Much of the facade and interior are true to their original designs.

Yes, they were restoring the roof when a fire broke out in the attic.

Can't help but think of "A Guy Like You" from the Hunchback of Notre Dame

Paris, the city of lovers
Is glowing this evening
True, that's because it's on fire
But still, there's l'amour
Somewhere out there in the night
Her heart is also alight
And I know the guy she just might
Be burning for

I'm betting halogen construction lamp. Leave one of them on for a couple hours, shake some dust loose and... poof.

Wonder if the people doing the reconstruction would have insurance on the hook for that? How do you say "bankruptcy" in French?

edited to add: My kid says she thinks it's "a la broke"

Restoration. Sounds like job security.

Usually these days, when professionals screw up the job, they still get paid again to do it again, even if it is known they will screw it up again each time.

It took two hours for the firemen to get there because they had trouble getting around the crowds. You'd think people would step aside when they see a big fire truck trying to get to that big burning building they're staring at.

I was told this this afternoon by someone and was just horrified.

Artwork saved good but that historic old building and next to the Eiffel Tower one of the most notable attractions in the "City of Lights".

I'll bet there's more to this story. Keeping my opinions to myself until the investigation is over though.

Ain't that a novel concept?

While the staggering outside damage to the historic French cathedral has yet to be assessed, it would appear that despite the massive damage to the frame and the wooden roof, the inside of the Notre Dame was miraculously spared.

We've had a few large apartment-building fires, a couple started by welders and one by a roofing-tar heater.

Pete Buttigieg demonstrates that he really cares about the French.

Too bad he's running for President of the USA.

I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to capitalize on a tragic event, and it's extremely unlikely that I would sell them now anyhow unless they went for some insane amount of money, but I happen to have in my possession two pieces of painted art of Notre Dame. One of the inside, and one of the outside of the building.

Both of these were acquired from my great aunt when she passed. I don't exactly know how much money she had, but her home had several tennis courts on it, she lived down the street from Mr. T and I met John Paxon at her funeral because she baby sat for him on occasion. (Maybe house sat... I don't remember). The house was passed down to her when my great grandmother died.

Before they moved, my parents gave the one to me because of the inside because they knew I always liked it as a kid. My step dad then pulled me aside one day and told me he wanted to have the other one. Of all the artwork they had, it was the one that their realtor wanted. When he looked at the back of it, it still had a price tag from Marshall Fields for $1,480, and since she prided herself on only buying the finest things for her home, it can be assumed that this was back in the days when Marshall Fields was strictly a well-to-do destination Downtown.

Any ideas how I could find out more about these pieces?

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So I snapped a few pics. Sorry for the low quality. I don't have a smart phone and my digital camera is ancient. I couldn't do much about the flash either.

They're beautiful, to be sure, but I don't know anything about art. For all I know they're just fancy reprints of some famous pieces you might recognize and not have hardly any value at all.

Sadly, the frame is broken on the bottom left corner of the second one. That was the one I was told I was getting years ago because I loved it as a kid. The first one is the one I got right before the move because the realtor was looking for another freebie and that's the only piece out of all the artwork they had that she seemed to want.

They don't really go with my bachelor motif, especially with those frames.

EDITED TO ADD: Oh... lol. I mentioned how men don't buy window dressings in the other thread. You might notice the black garbage bag that has been hanging in the window since I remodeled the room around 7 years ago. It keeps the light out when you need to sleep days for the night shift, and you can't beat the price. :)

Do Right, Be Right. :)
