Smoking, alcohol and fast food are all legal but have killed more people than heroin. People who lost their self-control will find a way to ruin themselves with tobacco, beer, fatty-food or drugs. Or maybe with all four.

Shirley took care of my mother until she died at 94. Shirley only lasted a year longer, until she was 59. Fatty-food was the one addiction of Shirley's I knew about. I thought she'd die of a heart attack and I actually took Shirley to doctors appointments several times, and the emergency room on special occasions because of chest pain, but it was an opioid overdose that killed her. Shirley's friend, Becky, had a different problem . . . alcohol. She ended up dead, too. Troy, who mows the cemetery where Shirley is buried, got a ride from me in January to the house where Shirley died from her overdose. I was visiting Shirley's grave when Troy asked for the ride. Troy thinks I don't know what he bought at the house with the $20 I loaned him. Troy is getting wobbly. It won't be long before he falls down forever. I am very familiar with people who lack self-control and eventually end up dead because of that lack.
