When aliens are trying to figure out why humanity vanished, there will probably be a school of thought among xenoarcheologists that argues that our species was basically headed in the right direction until climate change forced us to choose on a global level between narrow self-interest and long-term planetary viability. Assuming those aliens read Slate, I invite them to consider the following seven minutes of The Daily Show:

The Daily Show Shows Why Humanity Is Doomed
https://slate.com/culture/2019/02/trevor-noah-sex-crime-roundup-epstei
n-kraft-trump-kelly-pope-church-all-of-it-basically.html

Human beings have spent a lot of time amusing ourselves with optical illusions, the places where we can see the blind spots left by the ad-hoc design of senses. We haven’t spent nearly as much time wondering if the ad-hoc design of our moral senses are steering the planet towards doom, which, in our defense, is a much less amusing proposition. But watch Trevor Noah run down a laundry list of atrocities, ending with a montage of Patriots fans who, faced with the choice between either acknowledging their responsibilities to other human beings or enjoying a football game a little more, enthusiastically opt for the football game. When it comes to measuring other people’s suffering against even the tiniest personal gain, our brains just don’t work right.

The optical illusion is this one:

Long ago, way back in 2015, “the dress” became a polarizing viral behemoth. Like the Capulets and Montagues, the masses were split into two camps — those who looked at the dress and saw blue and black and the others who saw gold and white. They could not see eye to eye and frantically sought to understand why they saw one set of colors while others did not. Even the notoriously nonpartisan Taylor Swift broke her media silence to enter into the fray, siding with team #blackandblue.

Now, scientists say there’s a definitive explanation for the discrepancy, despite the fact that the dress is confirmed to be black and blue (nice work, Taylor).

In a new paper published in the Journal of Vision, New York University neuroscientist Pascal Wallisch, Ph.D., explains that the way a person perceives the color of the dress comes down to how they assume it is illuminated. He discovered that if people assumed the dress was lit by artificial light, they tended to think it was black and blue. However, if people believed the dress was just shadowed in natural light, they thought it was gold and white.

“Shadows are blue, so we mentally subtract the blue light in order to view the image, which then appears in bright colors — gold and white,” Wallisch explained in a statement. “However, artificial light tends to be yellowish, so if we see it brightened in this fashion, we factor out this color, leaving us with a dress that we see as a black and blue.”

Wallisch came to this conclusion after surveying 13,000 study participants who claimed to have previously seen a photo of the infamous dress about how they thought it was illuminated. Wallisch found that people who thought the dress was in a shadow were more likely to think it was gold and white.

The next part of the study was figuring out exactly why that correlation occurred. Participants were asked a variety questions about their demographic factors, such as their age and gender, and whether or not they were early risers or night owls. Interestingly, Wallisch discovered that people who preferred going to bed early and felt best in the mornings were also more likely to think the dress was white and gold. He also found that people over the age of 65 were more likely to see black and blue, though the morning/night person divide was the more influential factor.

Once upon a time I was caught unawares regarding the redefinition of "computers." For decades I had explained to those who asked how computers worked, how they were built, etc. At some point I realized they were not asking about computers, which are the hardware. They were asking about the software, the fluid apps and programs flowing within the hardware, but confusing it with the actual computer. After that, I remembered to first clarify if they were asking about the hardware, the software, or the difference between the 2.
BungBetty is still in the confused stage.

The Age of Catastrophism
Why Forces Welcoming Economic, Social, and Planatery Collapse Are Rising Around the Globe
https://eand.co/the-age-of-catastrophism-dcd462749c61

An interesting thing about it all, though, is that none of these collapses are what you might call. The planet isn’t melting down because a giant meteor struck it. The global economy isn’t flatlining because the harvest failed. Politics isn’t coming apart because a band of aliens shot particle beams at entire cities. Instead, what’s genuinely bizarre, weird, and gruesome, about this age of collapse is that all its collapses— every single one — are self-inflicted. They’re the products of human choice and thought and action.

If that doesn’t strike you as strange, think about the causes of previous collapses. Plague, flood, famine, pestilence. The old biblical punishments. Societies thought themselves accursed by the gods — such was the uncertain hand of fate. But our age is different. All these many forms of collapse are things that were made by us.

And yet by us, and I don’t mean you and me. I mean people I’ve come to call the catastrophists. The catastrophists are a rising force in the world. They are people who seem to welcome collapse. Who yearn and long for it. Who pine for it ardently like a long lost first love. I don’t mean that in a poetic way, but in a lethally real one. Catastrophists are people who vote for, sign up for, applaud, cheer — or worse yet, lead their societies towards collapse. The lunatics, my friends, are runnning the whole hospital.

Let’s do a few examples of catastrophists.

In America, there’s the GOP. This is a political party that’s so ignorant, so foolish, so backwards, that while the entire rest of the rich world invested in social scale public goods, like hospitals, schools, retirement, and childcare, sending everyone else’s quality of life rocketing upwards, the GOP championed something like Somalia on the Atlantic. Every man for himself?—?there shouldn’t be any such thing as government, because heaven forbid anyone should pay taxes. I guess those roads and schools built themselves, but I digress.

How do you get people to pay attention when they're so distracted by advertising, entertainment, and the circus which has been our media for the past 30 years?

I dunno.

People aren't used to thinking about BIG things. One million, one trillion ... it all sounds the same. That's why people can spend $60,000 on a car and then fret about spending $60 for dinner. We're like some primitives who dont count beyond "one two three many"; diffcult to proportion big things.

People REALLY aren't used to detecting and projecting trends. For most people, they think things will always be basically the same. And people are especially incapable of predicting hyperbolic/ non=linear change.

People's life-span is short, and memories are even shorter, it seems. But I remember whne I was young things were different ... we hadn't fished out/trashed up the ocean yet, or cut down most of the old\growth forests. I have a hard time making dear daughter understand that there was no plastic packaging when I was young.

I don't think global warming is a 'human' greed problem, nor is 'human' greed the solution. And it's not about wanting to preserve a good lifestyle. Nor is it a problem of money. Denmark, which is obviously a modern money economy with one of the highest standards of living in the world, reduced it CO2 emissions from 57.5 mmt in 2000 to 36.5 mmt in 2017. https://www.statista.com/statistics/449517/co2-emissions-denmark/

And it's not a 'population' problem. Despite having only 4% of the world's population in 2017, http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/us-population/, the US contributed 14% of CO2 emissions https://www.wri.org/blog/2017/04/interactive-chart-explains-worlds-top
-10-emitters-and-how-theyve-changed
.

It's not a problem of US political parties either, since US global warming rampaged on over the decades, no matter who was in charge of the WH or Congress.

Nor is it a problem of mass perception or will. Global warming is popularly polled as the top threat by more countries than anything else internationaaly http://www.pewglobal.org/2019/02/10/climate-change-still-seen-as-the-t
op-global-threat-but-cyberattacks-a-rising-concern
/ and by the vast majority of people in the US https://www.investors.com/politics/columnists/global-warming-polls-pri
orities
/.

The problem is that most people are obviously not living in a democracy, no matter what the CIA World Factbook says. Think about it. Would people freely choose the way they're living today if they had a real option to do something else? The reality is that despite our pretenses of being a country of, by, and for people, the people are powerless pawns.

BTW, the answer doesn't involve invoking the ego of the 1% either. We're not even people to them, and they don't give a crap what we think.

Other presidents have attacked policy initiatives, but not science

New efforts by President Trump and his staff to question or undermine the established science of climate change have created a widening rift between the White House on one side, and scientific facts, government agencies, and some leading figures in the president’s own party on the other.

The president’s senior advisers are exploring the idea of creating a panel aimed at questioning the National Climate Assessment. According to a White House memo, the group would include William Happer, a Princeton physicist who has asserted that carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas that scientists say is trapping heat and warming the planet — is beneficial to humanity.

The climate assessment, a sweeping report issued by the White House itself in November, concluded decisively that the burning of fossil fuels was warming the atmosphere, leading to a raft of harmful effects across the United States and the world.

And Mr. Trump announced last week on Twitter that he would nominate Kelly Knight Craft to be his ambassador to the United Nations. Ms. Craft said in a 2017 television interview that, on the issue of climate change, she believes there are “scientists on both sides that are accurate.” Ms. Craft's husband, Joseph W. Craft III, is a billionaire coal magnate from Kentucky.

“There is no precedent for something like this,” said Douglas Brinkley, a historian who has written books on five former United States presidents. “Other presidents have attacked policy initiatives, but not science.”

Why not attack science? If you are in the coal business, you would want to politicize the science as much as possible, maximizing the public's confusion, in order to maximize the amount of coal sold to power plants that are kept open by Trump. And you'd pick a coal lobbyist to regulate pollution from coal burning: Andrew Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist, was confirmed as EPA Administrator on February 28, 2019.

Employment in coal mining peaked in the U.S. in 1923, at 862,536. Remember that big coal-mining comeback promised by Trump? Well, employment in the sector did go up by 400 jobs in November to an estimated 53,200, although in the grand scheme of things, even the 2,500 coal-mining jobs added since Trump took office really don’t amount to much.

This may be the best essay I've read on the topic.

She's a little off on the Yellow Vest protests, but that's a minor quibble. It shows the how and why.

You expect too much from government. I found an explanation of why people have such ridiculously oversized, impractical expectations of what politicians can do but not about what they can do for themselves. They are too easy on themselves and too hard on politicians: http://fireflyfans.net/mthread.aspx?bid=18&tid=61954&mid=10709

I forgot to mention that when Bush was governor of Texas, he was already a liar and that he would destroy his Texas National Guard service records using his power as governor. It was no surprise he would lie about Iraq's non-existing WMDs. It was definitely no surprise that when he was warned about the possibility of a 9/11 attack he would say, “All right, you’ve covered your ass now” and then he did nothing because he is fundamentally good-for-nothing. The next GOP President would be lazier and more dishonest, making Bush look good in comparison, but both Bush and Trump were climate change deniers while in the White House.

Perhaps you can point to those wondrous greenhouse-gas reductions the democrats accomplished.

But, you obviously CAN'T show how the democrats actually DID something - no matter how minimal - to irl, yanno, fix the problem..

And if democrats don't do anything different, how are they any better?

btw, I sort-of agree with shf - I think we're probably toast. And a long time ago I said my goodbyes to the wonderful earth I used to know. Even if we survive, nothing is going to be as beautiful and generous as it was. Or as Monbiot said, 'goodbye kind earth'.

I just am extremely irritated by our resident idiots who think that Trump caused the entire global warming problem all by himself in just the last 2 years. REALLY? What kind of an idiotic nutcase do you have to be to think that?

Unless you understand that the entire political structure - that's BOTH parties, in case anyone is wondering - is shackled to our current economic structure and its elite - nothing is going to get fixed. Changing the face of the figurehead will accomplish zero.

Trump promised to his voters, not to "our current economic structure", to eradicate Obama’s environmental legacy. He delivered on his promises to his voters:

Two people, rue/1kiki, repeating the same falsehoods about Democrats being the same as Republicans doesn't make it true.

They are one and the same. They also share the inability to read a chart - I guess math is hard for them.

I suspect from Kiki's latest posts that her agitation scheme & pimpin' for Donnie 2020 has shifted into high gear.

"Trump promised to his voters, not to "our current economic structure", to eradicate Obama’s environmental legacy."

Well, THIS is a bit inscrutable.

But what WAS Obama’s environmental legacy, anyway? I see dubya's inadvertent contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions (by crashing the economy) - but Obama's? Close to status quo.

You are not even trying. Remember this? Trump’s Paris Agreement withdrawal announcement
https://climateanalytics.org/briefings/fact-check-trumps-paris-agreeme
nt-withdrawal-announcement
/

Nobody else in the World withdrew from that Agreement. Only Trump. Staying in the Agreement does not magically win the war against climate change, as Obama well knew because the GOP was preventing every change to national policy it can. Trump takes it to the next level, he doesn't even believe there is such a thing as climate change. His withdrawal from the Agreement does guarantee the U.S. government will not be fighting that war. He is a conscientious objector to war, he has a medical deferment because of his bone spurs. Places like California must fight the war without Washington DC help. Or DC money. Trump will not sign a spending bill that includes money to fight climate change.

In December 2015 ...

nearly at the end of two terms in office

So Obama didn't REALLY commit the US to the accord. 'Cause, yanno - executive order.
