Houston needs an Ike Dike or else the next big hurricane will drown the city in seawater from Galveston Bay. Trump needs a Texas/Mexico Wall. Trump could make a deal with Houston's Democratic Congressional delegation to vote for his Wall if he signs for the Ike Dike. Or things can stay as they always have been and nobody gets what they need. It is Trump's choice, not the Democrats'.

Do we all need the Ike Dike? No. You don't need it. A hurricane in Galveston Bay won't push seawater all the way to your house in Indiana, so you don't want to pay for it. But the way for Houston to get its Ike Dike (that you don't want) is to make a connection inside Trump's head. If Trump gives Houston an Ike Dike, then the Congressional delegation from Houston will give him votes for the Texas/Mexico Wall.

The measure of a politician’s commitment to a policy isn’t how often he asks for it but how much he’s willing to trade away to get it. By that measure, President Trump has never seemed committed to the border wall.

When Republicans controlled Congress, Democrats accepted Trump's deal: the wall for legalizing the young undocumented immigrants known as DREAMers. “I’ll take a bucket, take bricks, and I’ll start building it myself,” said Rep. Luis Gutiérrez, a Democrat. “We will dirty our hands in order for the DREAMers to have a clean future in America. Then why haven’t we settled this?”

Democrats told Trump to name a price for the southern border wall. Trump said $20 billion in exchange for a deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. Democrats thought Trump had reached an agreement.

Then Trump let it all fell apart.

Trump Tells TV Anchors Before Speech That Border Trip Is Just A Photo Op

President Donald Trump told TV news anchors at a lunch before his Oval Office address that his upcoming trip to the border won’t “change a damn thing” and that it’s really just a photo opportunity.

At the end of the day, there is literally nothing more banal in American political history than the president having a proposal he can’t get the opposition party to agree to. If every policy standoff ended in a government shutdown, we couldn’t have a country at all.

How will a president manage to deal with an actual national crisis who can’t successfully manage peace and prosperity? Judging by Tuesday’s speech, Trump's ability to handle even problems with a low degree of difficulty is getting worse, as his team is increasingly denuded of people with a modicum of competence.

Trump expands his shutdown this morning in California:

Billions of dollars are sent to the State of California for Forrest fires that, with proper Forrest Management, would never happen. Unless they get their act together, which is unlikely, I have ordered FEMA to send no more money. It is a disgraceful situation in lives & money!

Here’s South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham appearing on Fox News after the president’s speech: "To my Republican colleagues, this is the best chance we'll ever have to help President Trump get border wall funding, steel barrier funding, and at the same time fix the loopholes. The only way we lose is to give in. If we'll stand firm, put deals on the table that make sense, we will win this on behalf of the American people — but if we undercut the president, that's the end of his presidency and the end of our party, and we deserve to be punished if we give in now."

So there it is — end this government shutdown and you kill the Trump presidency and the Republican Party.

If you believe the stakes are that dire, it’s hard to find a way out.

I don't think if Putin was our president he could do as much damage as Trump is. He's shut down most of the gov and laid off 800,000 US citizens for no reason, and now he's pissing off another group of dedicated civil servants. Maybe he'll start evicting people and bull dozing their houses if they live near water or areas with any fire potential.

He's totally mad.

(Trump reposted the tweet at 7:25 AM - 9 Jan 2019 after deleting the earlier one where he misspelled “forest” twice.)
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1083022011574747137

The Trump tweet blames the state of California for poorly managing its forests. Yet this is based on a major misunderstanding: The federal government owns and manages 57 percent of the state’s 33 million acres of forest land, while the state manages only about 3 percent. The rest is privately owned.

The US Forest Service had only been able to reduce fire risk with prescribed burns and thinning on 235,000 acres in California, leaving millions of acres untended. The majority of the burned area in 2018 was on federal land, and the Camp Fire, the state’s deadliest and most destructive fire on record, was likely ignited by power lines on federal land. The US Forest Service is part of the US Department of Agriculture, which is currently shut down . . . by Trump.

I agree with you and Senator Graham, but I am wishing that Trump will cause the end of the Trump Presidency and the GOP. That accidental death can be avoided if tomorrow Trump said the wall was all a big mistake and he no longer supported it and he declares the crisis is over. His supporters would fall right in line.

Senator Pat Roberts, Republican of Kansas, who lamented on Wednesday morning that government shutdowns “never work” and turn federal workers into “pawns.” Though Senate Republicans had not reached a point of direct intervention yet, he said, “we’re getting pretty close.”

Later in the day, Trump slammed his hand on a table and stormed out of a White House meeting with congressional leaders. He feels that either the Democrats give in very soon or else the GOP Senators will end his shutdown prematurely.

You want numbers? Trump gives you numbers: “The border wall would very quickly pay for itself. The cost of illegal drugs exceeds $500 billion a year, vastly more than the $5.7 billion we have requested from Congress.”

Illegal drugs are almost all smuggled in through legal ports of entry, not hauled across the desert. I didn’t realize that nearly all drug smuggling is hidden in spare tires, placed in containers on legitimate commercial trucks, etc. Drug smuggling would be only marginally affected by more border fencing. Trump can't dip into that $500 billion in drugs to pay for his wall, which leads into another thing he said, “The wall will also be paid for indirectly by the great new trade deal we have made with Mexico.”

This falls into Wolfgang Pauli’s famous category of being so ridiculous that “it’s not even wrong.” It’s like saying the wall will be funded indirectly from the taxes paid by the workers who build the wall. That’s not how it works.

Hmmmmm... Maybe he's not the tyrant you all constantly accuse him of being.

Remember when Obama was turned down when he wanted to bomb Syria and he did it anyways? When we actually ran out of bombs from how many we dropped?

Wouldn't surprise me if you don't. The media didn't cover it.

Trump got what he wanted for himself: a multi-billion dollar personal tax cut, a TV show on every network, and international fame. What he did not want, but it came with living in the White House and flying on Air Force One, is the job of CEO of the biggest organization in North America. Despite being a lazy CEO, he is taking in more money for himself then ever before and he has more TV shows about himself then in all the previous years of his life. But the Trump Wall thing and all those details about running an organization that spans 50 states and every country on Earth? He is not interested in doing the tedious, boring, detailed work.

Not interested is why he won't get his Wall named for him. He doesn't really care to think it through carefully about who he needs to trade with to get the Wall. Why won't he do the work? Because finishing the job he started won't make him wealthier. It is too much trouble. Declaring a national emergency will make even more trouble for himself. He might, but I predict he will drop the ball if he does.

Texas only needs 200 miles of border wall — not 1,200 — says Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. A day after being at the White House to consult with the Trump administration on the border wall, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said Wednesday that the state doesn’t need a barrier along the entire Rio Grande River from Brownsville to El Paso.

Instead, Patrick said the key is building barriers from Brownsville to Falcon Lake. That is a stretch of fewer than 200 miles.

Patrick, who lives in Montgomery County, is one of Trump’s most trusted political allies in Texas. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Patrick led his Texas campaign.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for a steel slat design for his border wall, which he described as "absolutely critical to border security" in his Oval Office address to the nation Tuesday. But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slat prototype proved it could be cut through with a saw, according to a report by DHS.

How much money has been pledged for The Trump Wall by Trump supporters?

$19,904,936 of $1 Billion goal.
www.gofundme.com/TheTrumpWall

It is not real dollars because no money changes hands until the entire billion has been pledged, but still the Trump voters can't get to $20 million.

Trump could pledge 5 times that, but he hasn't pledged any of his money.

Trump, and most of his voters, are not serious about the Wall when they won't even make a cost-free pledge of money toward building it.

And let us not forget Fund The Wall which wrote: "Based on best estimates of cost per mile, so far we've funded 296.05 linear feet of wall."

Fund The Wall notes that Trump voters can well afford to pay for Trump's Wall: "Why wait? Americans contributed $410.02 billion to charity in 2017. 2018 will surely be even more. Generating $5B in contributions to border security for each of the next 5 years would comprise at most 1.2% of annual giving. We can spare it!"

Does that mean you pledged $10 to build Trump's Wall? Or did you do nothing like the typical Trump voter? In the last 4 hours the 62,984,828 Trump voters have promised (but not actually paid) literally hundreds of dollars toward the Wall! Sorrowfully, it's much less than the old-fashion Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. www.gofundme.com/TheTrumpWall

To get things done, the president needs to shut up.

Trump believed in advance of his Tuesday night Oval Office address that speaking to the public about his desire for a border wall was pointless.

And he did not want to make the publicity stunt trip to the Texas border zone that is scheduled for Thursday.

“It’s not going to change a damn thing,” Trump reportedly said.

Trump was right about the damn thing. Time and again, even presidents who are universally regarded as eloquent public speakers and effective public communicators — think Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama — have tried and failed to bring public opinion around to their point of view by talking about it. Trump is not a charming, eloquent figure in their mold. The presidential “bully pulpit” is one of the office’s real powers, but it simply doesn’t work the way proponents of this strategy want it to.

And that goes double or triple for a crude and unpopular president like Trump.

The place for him to make progress toward his goals on border security is the obscure back rooms of Congress where deals can be cut and priorities swapped. Talking about his agenda in high-profile ways — and dramatizing his commitment to it by shutting down the government — is completely counterproductive, serving only to fire up millions of banal Democrats who’ve never in their lives held an opinion about what kind of border security measures are appropriate in rural West Texas.

He is a ton of laughs. His plan: COMPELLING MEXICO TO PAY FOR THE WALL

Introduction: The provision of the Patriot Act, Section 326 - the "know your customer" provision, compelling financial institutions to demand identity documents before opening accounts or conducting financial transactions is a fundamental element of the outline below. That section authorized the executive branch to issue detailed regulations on the subject, found at 31 CFR 130.120-121. It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year. There are several ways to compel Mexico to pay for the wall including the following:

When I read what he said, rather than listening to Trump, I realize the guy talks ten times faster than his brain works. He really needs to talk less and less while doing more and more thinking in private, taking notes, looking up answers rather than making up his facts on the fly. The next couple of years are going to get really chaotic for him on the job in DC if he doesn't settle down and discipline his fast-talking mouth.

Not interested in watching the video. Send me a transcript if you have it.

That being said, if you read his campaign page about the wall before the election he actually never did say that Mexico would pay for it with money directly. It wasn't as if the Mexican President was going to hand Trump an oversized Publisher Clearing House style check to Trump with "For the Wall" in the Memo line.

It was going to be paid with additional fees and fines associated with legal and illegal immigration into our country, levied against Mexico and future immigrants, that was going to pay for it.

I'll see if the WaybackMachine has the page somewhere to post here.

You're oversimplifying what that page says.

However, I will admit that it was unfortunate how it was worded at the top.

"It's an easy decision for Mexico: make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion" is a prime example of how dumbing things down for the lowest common denominator can come back to bite you in the ass.

The rest of the page doesn't even back that statement up and has the real information about how the money would be obtained.

Thanks for the link. I don't know why I wasn't able to bring up the page on archive.org earlier.

No kidding that I oversimplified, but the first thing is that whoever wrote the plan for Trump misunderstood how those laws actually work. The campaign’s remittance proposal cited the wrong statute, and remittance payments go back to Mexican residents, not the government. But at least there was some sort of a plan, even if Trump now wants to pretend it was something else.

As for Trump's mouth, it understands very little, and it can't stop running around in circles and barking like crazy.

Let’s look back at Trump’s actual plan for making Mexico pay for the wall:

Trump’s Mexico Remittance Proposal Goes Inexplicably Awry
By Stephen Heifetz and Kaitlin Cassel on April 5, 2016

Stephen Heifetz and Kaitlin Cassel at the Steptoe International Compliance Blog wrote at the time that Trump was mangling the legislation:

"He says the executive branch issued “detailed regulations on the subject, found at 31 CFR 130.120-121.” But there are no regulations at 31 CFR § 130.120-121. When the Treasury Department initially issued customer identification regulations for banks, they were found at 31 CFR § 103.121. (That number after the letters is 103, not 130). Forgiving the transposition of numbers in Trump’s memo, those regulations were re-issued over five years ago with completely different numbering, so that the current regulation to which Trump presumably meant to cite is 31 CFR § 1020.220.

Is this just a set of typos we should overlook? Nope — it evinces a lack of familiarity with the relevant legal terrain that becomes obvious in the next paragraph of Trump’s memo."

They go on to argue in some detail that using this regulatory mechanism would likely impede a lot of legitimate commerce while doing little to reduce remittances. Trump, it turns out, was not really as versed in the policy weeds of this as he portrayed himself to be.

What’s more, Trump’s whole discussion of the issue was really based on an apples-and-oranges comparison. Money transferred by Mexican-born residents of the United States back to residents of Mexico is not a budgetary cost to the US federal government, nor is it a budgetary resource that the Mexican government can tap.

Trump’s confusion on this point was maybe an ominous sign, because as soon as he won the election, the plan started to change.

According to the fake news, you see, Trump was asking Congress for money because Mexico wasn’t paying for the wall. The truth, according to Trump, was that Congress was really just going to advance him some money and Mexico would pay America back later:

Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump

The dishonest media does not report that any money spent on building the Great Wall (for sake of speed), will be paid back by Mexico later!
