Former Apollo Astronaut Harrison Schmitt said there may be liquid water on the carters on the far side, he and other scientists in energy companies also talked about the possibility of fusion from the Helium 3 product on the Moon, he gave lecture and warned about NASA falling behind and about China Moon Settlements. He said Western U.S. leadership would suffer on Earth if China lands a man first on the Dark side with American energy firms losing an edge in exploiting rare resources and ultimately building colonies, out space towns and colonizing the lunar surface.

China has its sights set on lunar regions never before explored. Chang’e-4 is aiming for the moon’s largest, deepest and possibly oldest known feature created by an impact, the South Pole–Aitken basin, on the lunar farside, which always faces away from Earth. The whole basin, which is 2,500 kilometers wide and up to 8.2 kilometers deep, is too big for the rover to explore. So Chang’e-4 is shooting for the 186-kilometer-wide Von Kármán crater within the larger basin for a cosmic hole in one.

Chinese spacecraft becomes first EVER to touch down on dark side of the moon as it transmits never-before-seen 'close range' images after making historic landing

The moon is "tidally locked" to Earth in its rotation so the same side is always facing Earth. Chang'e-4 is carrying six experiments from China and four from abroad, including low-frequency radio astronomical studies -- aiming to take advantage of the lack of interference on the moons' far side. The rover will also conduct mineral and radiation tests, the China National Space Administration has said. "It's a very good start," said Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration program, in an interview with state broadcaster CCTV. "We are now building China into an aerospace power." - Space dominance -

Beijing is planning to send another lunar lander, Chang'e-5, later this year to collect samples and bring them back to Earth. It is among a slew of ambitious Chinese targets, which include a reusable launcher by 2021, a super-powerful rocket capable of delivering payloads heavier than those NASA and private rocket firm SpaceX can handle, a moon base, a permanently crewed space station, and a Mars rover. The People's Liberation Army "looks at space as a new strategic high ground," said Michael Raska, who studies security and defence issues at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. An increased presence in space will be vital for "anything for early warning, surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting... nearly every military mission out there is relying on some sort of space capability." But China's aerospace industry still has a long way to go, especially compared to that of the US, said Shen Dingli, a Shanghai-based international studies scholar.

A Chinese spacecraft has made the first successful landing ever on the far side of the moon, a mission seen as an important step as the country looks to push forward its space programme.

The lunar explorer Chang'e 4 touched down at 10:26 am and relayed a photo of the "dark side" of the moon to the Queqiao satellite, the official China Central Television reported on Thursday.

The moon is tidally locked to Earth, rotating at the same rate that it orbits our planet, so the far side - or the "dark side" - is never visible from Earth. Previous spacecraft have seen the far side of the moon, but none has landed on it.

The landing "lifted the mysterious veil" from the far side of the moon, and "opened a new chapter in human lunar exploration", the broadcaster said.

A Chinese spacecraft called Chang'e 4 has successfully made the first landing on the far side of the moon
The lunar explorer touched down at 10.26am (2.26am GMT) local time in the Aitken basin's Von Karman crater
The mission communicates with Earth via a relay satellite known as the Queqiao which launched in May
Moon's Von Karman crater is at its south pole and is 1,600 miles across and eight miles deep

Did they name it Osiris?

Liquid water on Luna?
In the 2 weeks each month that the far side faces Sol, maybe the water melts. But in the other weeks, wouldn't it freeze? Or evaporate?

So it seems hotter than boiling during "day" for about 2 weeks, then about -200F during "night" for 2 weeks. Not enough gravity to hold atmo, so wouldn't solar winds just strip away evaporated water from Luna? I'm not seeing this. Does Luna rotate with a pole facing Terra? The Far Side is a pole?

Anyhow, this is a thread that could use pics.

The Rover seems to be a piggy back on previous missions

the actual design might be a cross breed between an Old Soviet Lander and the newer NASA Mars Rovers

got this from a site linked to tumblr.com

As for ice? water? or water ice, I assume someone from some country using an orbiter may have detected it deep within some crater that is in constant shade away from the Sun

The Universetoday news site has a long article on the event

They also have an image with ' map showing the permanently shadowed regions (blue) that cover about 3 percent of the moon’s south pole. '

Last, but not least, the lander will be testing the effects of lunar gravity on living creatures. This will be done through it’s Lunar Micro Ecosystem, a stainless steel container measuring 18 cm (in) long and 16 cm (in) in diameter. This cylinder contains seeds and insect eggs, as well as all the air and heat they will need to survive, and will test whether plants and insects could hatch and grow in lunar gravity.

The successful landing of the Chang’e-4 mission was not only an historic accomplishment. Given the objectives of the mission, it also signaled the beginning of a new era of lunar exploration. In the coming years, the information this and other missions provide will help set the stage for crewed missions back to the Moon. They will also help with the long-term goal of establishing a permanent human presence there.
