Robert Mueller has asked the FBI to probe allegations that a woman was offered up to $20,000 to make false accusations of sexual harassment against him.

In a rare public statement from the office of the man investigating Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign, it said it had been notified of the accusations last week, apparently by journalists.

“When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the special counsel, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation,” spokesman Peter Carr said in an emailed statement.

US media said the announcement from Mr Mueller, came as Jack Burkman, a conservative talk show host and conspiracy theorist who previously pushed unproven accusations about the death of Democratic aide Seth Rich, announced he was to hold a press conference in Arlington, Virginia, where he was produce the first of several women who were going to make allegations against the 74-year-old Mr Mueller.

“Some sad news. On Thursday, November 1, at the Rosslyn Holiday Inn at noon, we will reveal the first of special counsel Robert Mueller's sex assault victims,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I applaud the courage and dignity and grace and strength of my client.”

In a video posted on Facebook, he added: “Mueller is a bad guy, not just because of what he does in the courtroom, but because of what he does outside of the courtroom. Mueller has done bad things to a number of women, the first of whom is coming out this Thursday."

Reports said a woman who worked with Mr Mueller as a paralegal for Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro in the 1970s, had claimed she had been offered tens of thousands of dollars to make allegations against the special counsel, who was appointed to head the investigation into Russian interference after Donald Trump fired then FBI director James Comey in May 2017.

“He said [ . . .] ‘I want you to make accusations of sexual misconduct and workplace harassment against Robert Mueller, and I want you to sign a sworn affidavit to that effect’,” she alleged.

13 days ago I received this tip alleging an attempt to pay off women to make up accusations of sexual misconduct against Special Counsel Bob Mueller. Other reporters received the same email. Now the Special Counsel's office is telling us they've referred the matter to the FBI

The Atlantic, among others, reported that the woman had worked as a paralegal at the Pillsbury, Madison, and Sutro law firm but that she “didn’t see” him much.

“When I did see him, he was always very polite to me, and was never inappropriate,” the woman added.

It said the woman said that she was contacted by a man “with a British accent” who wanted to ask her “a couple questions" about Robert Mueller.

Mr Burkman did not immediately respond to enquiries. However, he told The Atlantic he denied knowing the woman, who originally alerted journalists to the alleged scheme, and termed the referral of the matter to the FBI “a joke…. Mueller wants to deflect attention from his sex assault troubles by attacking me”.

Supporters of Mr Mueller’s investigation, which has now lasted almost 18 months, have long been concerned about efforts to smear the probe and its findings, whenever they are released. Mr Trump has often called the probe “witch hunt” and denied there being any collusion with Russia.

Bloomberg News said the attempt to spread what Mr Mueller’s office said were false claims about him, appeared to be an effort to discredit the former FBI director as his team entered a critical stage of its investigation.

It has previously been reported Mr Mueller is expected to announce some of his key conclusions shortly after the midterm elections.

Mr Mueller’s office has so far charged 32 people, with four former associates of the president pleading guilty and agreeing to cooperate with investigators. A grand jury in recent weeks has heard testimony centred on another former Trump aide, Roger Stone.

What I love about this little farce is that Jacob Wohl, the kid who probably thought this would be funny, is in for the shock of his life because the FBI
is now involved.

He's sure to get his "15 minutes." Also, I'm patiently waiting for 12 noon to see who this woman is, it's been reported that no one (meaning the press) could find her. Jack Burkman better be ready for the Feds to be crawling up his ass. I wonder, did this 20-year-old really cook up this scheme? Could be, it's a really stupid scheme. Imagine, using your mom's telephone number as cover.

To make matters worse, Jennifer Taub, the Vermont Law School associate professor, who was contacted by Simon Frick of Sure Fire Intelligence via
email, was smart enough to contact Mueller's office because of it's questionable content...namely sexual misconduct. Taub has never met Mueller, ever. From what I understand, Taub had attended or conducted a conference regarding Mueller many years back. Apparently, this is where Wohl/Frick?
obtained this info.

The FBI is looking into the matter to see if any charges could be brought against this dumb fuck of a kid. All I keep thinking is that this is the same
FBI that solved the MAGA Bomber, from another dumb shit, within a week. I would venture a guess that Jacob Wohl is going to be supremely fucked. Maybe
even Burkman.

Press conference alleging Mueller sex assaults features no evidence, no victim

Jacob Wohl, a pro-Trump conspiracy theorist, and Jack Burkman, a conservative lobbyist and radio host, stood in front of a half-full room of reporters and activists at a D.C. area Holiday Inn Thursday to detail their allegations of sexual misconduct against Robert Mueller, the special counsel probing Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The woman who they said has made those allegations, a Los Angeles native in her 30's, was slated to attend the press conference and give her own account. But, Wohl said, she feared for her life and on arriving in Washington, "panicked and boarded a flight to another location." Burkman promised she would appear at another press conference in the near future.

Wohl and Burkman took turns speaking at the podium, detailing the allegations, complimenting each other, and defending their professional records against charges of conspiracy peddling and political bias.

The conference was streamed by several reporters in the room. A pickup truck parked in the lot outside by protestors carried a giant inflatable rat wearing a blonde Trump toupee.

Earlier this week, several journalists reported on Twitter that they had received suspicious emails from a woman claiming someone had offered to pay her for making sexual misconduct allegations against Mueller. The journalists said those offers had come from SureFire Intelligence, a company NBC News connected to Jacob Wohl through telephone and domain records. Their claims were later bolstered by a second woman who came forward with an email offering similar payments in exchange for smearing Mueller, signed by a SureFire agent.

Burkman opened the press conference by addressing the controversy.

"None of this is true," Burkman said of the allegations he and Wohl had been involved in a plot.

"There were no offers of payment, there was no wrongdoing, there was no bribery, there was nothing illegal or untoward or unethical that took place here," Wohl said.

The special counsel's office asked the FBI to investigate the matter last week, after learning of the alleged plot to smear Mueller. Burkman and Wohl said they had not been contacted by the FBI. "I don't think the bureau would embarrass itself by calling us, talking about people that don't exist," Burkman said.

Wohl told reporters the woman making allegations had contacted Wohl with claims Mueller had sexually assaulted her in a New York City hotel room in August of 2010.

Explaining that his "default position" is "to not believe" women who come forward with allegations of sexual assault, Wohl told reporters that he found the woman now accusing Mueller credible. Wohl said that he met her after she hired his company SureFire Intelligence to handle "an estate matter." She later came back to him with the allegations.

Little is known about the woman allegedly making these allegations. After Wohl and Burkman went back and forth on the exact spelling of her name, Wohl described her as a fashion designer, who was "well-educated and comes from a good family."

"She is a gal who has an illustrious background and she is not politically oriented," Wohl said.

"We went through every meticulous detail of her allegation, we cross-referenced it with public records, we joined historical societies to get some of those records," he said. Wohl said they were "in the process" of going to police with Cass's allegations and would file a report by the end of next week.

Burkman then stepped in and said the decision would be "up to my client," and the evidence-gathering process was mid-investigation. "We have tentacles out in all directions gathering evidence," Burkman said.

They further claimed to have more victims whose stories they were currently vetting. "Hundreds of people have contacted us" this week, Wohl said.

Burkman is well-known for peddling baseless conspiracy theories surrounding the murder of Democratic aide Seth Rich and promoting bombshell information that never materializes. Last November — again at a Holiday Inn —Burkman sent reporters home without making good on what he had advertised as new allegations of sexual harassment against a member of Congress.

Likewise, Wohl, a former hedge fund manager now banned from the financial industry, has amplified prominent conspiracy theories as a writer for The Gateway Pundit, an often inaccurate right-wing website.

When Wohl and Burkman opened the floor to questions, the assembled reporters were unrestrained.

Wohl was asked about his political bias, specifically for his tweets attacking Mueller, including one where he wrote the special counsel should be sent to Guantanamo Bay. Wohl said his personal opinion had no effect on his professional handling of the investigation.

Other reporters questioned 20-year-old Wohl's experience in the intelligence gathering business and why he had lied to reporters days earlier when he denied having any part in the investigation. Burkman responded, calling Wohl "a child prodigy who has eclipsed Mozart."

At one point, Will Sommer from The Daily Beast said, "No one is discounting [the woman's] account. We didn't know her name until 20 minutes ago. We're questioning both you two very UN-credible people."

NBC News has elected not to publish the woman's name because she has not gone public, and because of concerns about Wohl and Burkman's credibility.

When questioned about a Washington Post account of Mueller at jury duty in D.C. on the date of the alleged incident in New York, Wohl accused the paper of reporting the story to discredit the woman.

When reporters laughed at Wohl's suggestion that "sometimes people go to jury duty, but they're also somewhere else," Wohl admonished the audience. "It's not funny. It's not a laughing matter," he said.

As the hour they had booked was almost up, Burkman announced he would take one more question. Someone from the back shouted, "Are you both prepared for federal prison?"

"No we are not," Burkman answered.

Every Way Jacob Wohl Messed Up His Attempt to Take Down Robert Mueller

In the past several hours, a scheme to take down Special Counsel Robert Mueller by accusing him of sexual misconduct has imploded in a truly spectacular fashion. The plot appears to have been largely orchestrated by Jacob Wohl, a 20-year-old right-wing troll, Trump superfan, disgraced hedge-fund wunderkind, and apparent plagiarist who tweeted Monday night that “a scandalous story about Mueller is breaking tomorrow. Should be interesting. Stay tuned!”

The scandal so far seems to be how laughably bad Wohl was at covering up his tracks. Shortly after he posted his ominous tweet, several journalists managed to connect Wohl to a false sexual-misconduct tip they had received about Mueller earlier this month, and to a company called Surefire Intelligence that claimed to be looking into these allegations. The shoddily constructed narrative quickly collapsed, due in part to Wohl’s failure to account for people’s ability to reverse image search, and now, the FBI has announced that they are looking into whether women were offered money to make false allegations against Mueller.

Here’s everything we know about this impressive failure.

First of all, who is Jacob Wohl?

Wohl first made headlines as a teenage hedge-fund owner, the Daily Beast reports; in 2016, at the age of 18, he began referring to himself as the “Wohl of Wall Street.” Amazingly, that nickname isn’t the most upsetting thing he did as a financier. That same year, he was investigated by a government regulator for fraud, and the Arizona Corporation Commission issued a cease-and-desist letter accusing him of selling unregistered securities.

During this time, he also registered several domain names, including WohlGirls.com, a website that featured a scantily clad “Wohl Girl of the Month,” as well as a “news” website called Offended America, which later rebranded as the Washington Reporter. (Earlier this year, Splinter reported that the Reporter’s prominent “Code of Ethics” appeared to be lifted almost completely from ProPublica’s.)

Where Wohl has gained the most prominence, though, is Twitter, where he is known for his sycophantic and almost instantaneous replies to many of President Trump’s tweets, and for repeatedly posting nearly identical tweets about visiting a “hipster coffee shop” where young libs huddle and reveal in hushed tones their admiration for Trump and his policies.

As Vox reports, on October 17, someone named “Lorraine” emailed several reporters and said that she had worked with Mueller when he was a lawyer at the firm Pillsbury Madison & Sutro in the 1970s, and that she had been approached by someone working for Jack Burkman (a GOP lobbyist and conspiracy theorist who promotes sensational stories about the murder of DNC staffer Seth Rich) who offered her money to say that Mueller had harassed her during this time. Around that time, Burkman posted on social media asking women to come forward with any harassment stories they may have about Mueller.

But the “Lorraine” story did not hold up, and it’s unclear if she’s even real. When NBC News reached out to the firm, which is now called Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, and gave them Lorraine’s name, the firm’s spokesperson told them that they have “no record of this individual working for our firm.”

Burkman now says the entire Lorraine ploy was a hoax. But, as Andrew Prokop at Vox writes: “It is not clear if Burkman, who insisted Surefire was ‘real,’ is also being tricked, or if he is a willing participant in this scam.”

That sounds like a terrible plan! How does Wohl fit in?

Ed Krasserstein at the Hill Reporter said that when he was looking into the Lorraine claims, he received a threatening phone call from a man claiming to work for Surefire Intelligence. When Krasserstein reached out to Burkman, Burkman told him he’s familiar with Surefire Intelligence, that “they do a lot of good research,” and that it’s run by Jacob Wohl.

Wohl, for his part, has denied any involvement in the plot, telling NBC News, “I don’t have any involvement in any investigations of any kind. I’m not quite that cool.” He has also declined to comment on his involvement with Surefire Intelligence. However, as journalists began looking into the company, they found Wohl’s recently postpubescent fingerprints all over it.

As NBC reports:

• His email, jacob.wohl@nexmanagement.com, was involved in registering the domain name for Surefire Intelligence.

• Surefire’s official phone number redirects to his mother’s voice-mail.

• The LinkedIn profile pictures of many of Surefire Intelligence’s “staff” are pictures of celebrities, like Christoph Waltz, Israeli model Bar Rafaeli, and Sigourney Weaver’s husband, Jim Simpson, as well as a stock-photo model.

• The profile picture of the managing partner “Matthew Cohen” seems to be a darkened picture of Wohl himself.

Wohl is now claiming that the Lorraine hoax email likely came from someone in Mueller’s office.

The whole flimsy plot seems to be an attempt to discredit Mueller, who is currently investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, as well as the press, by having them report on a false story.

What does Academy Award–winner Christoph Waltz have to say about this?

No, I'm not religious, but I do read the Bible (part of my lefty leaning training), and I believe it's "plank" in your own. The latest move by Drumpf to affect change in the DOJ a few here call the "Deep State" (and thereby corrupt). Oh, the irony!

It seems that Constitutional scholars have found the legitimacy of said move lacking; plus in violation of a number of DOJ regs to boot. Mueller and company may very well challenge the White House toward that end.

What now seems an eternity ago, the conservative law professor Steven Calabresi published an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal in May arguing that Robert Mueller’s appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional. His article got a lot of attention, and it wasn’t long before President Trump picked up the argument, tweeting that “the Appointment of the Special Counsel is totally UNCONSTITUTIONAL!”

Professor Calabresi’s article was based on the Appointments Clause of the Constitution, Article II, Section 2, Clause 2. Under that provision, so-called principal officers of the United States must be nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate under its “Advice and Consent” powers.

He argued that Mr. Mueller was a principal officer because he is exercising significant law enforcement authority and that since he has not been confirmed by the Senate, his appointment was unconstitutional. As one of us argued at the time, he was wrong. What makes an officer a principal officer is that he or she reports only to the president. No one else in government is that person’s boss. But Mr. Mueller reports to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general. So, Mr. Mueller is what is known as an inferior officer, not a principal one, and his appointment without Senate approval was valid.

But Professor Calabresi and Mr. Trump were right about the core principle. A principal officer must be confirmed by the Senate. And that has a very significant consequence today.

It means that Mr. Trump’s installation of Matthew Whitaker as acting attorney general of the United States after forcing the resignation of Jeff Sessions is unconstitutional. It’s illegal. And it means that anything Mr. Whitaker does, or tries to do, in that position is invalid.

Much of the commentary about Mr. Whitaker’s appointment has focused on all sorts of technical points about the Vacancies Reform Act and Justice Department succession statutes. But the flaw in the appointment of Mr. Whitaker, who was Mr. Sessions’s chief of staff at the Justice Department, runs much deeper. It defies one of the explicit checks and balances set out in the Constitution, a provision designed to protect us all against the centralization of government power.

If you don’t believe us, then take it from Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, whom Mr. Trump once called his “favorite” sitting justice. Last year, the Supreme Court examined the question of whether the general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board had been lawfully appointed to his job without Senate confirmation. The Supreme Court held the appointment invalid on a statutory ground.

Justice Thomas agreed with the judgment, but wrote separately to emphasize that even if the statute had allowed the appointment, the Constitution’s Appointments Clause would not have. The officer in question was a principal officer, he concluded. And the public interest protected by the Appointments Clause was a critical one: The Constitution’s drafters, Justice Thomas argued, “recognized the serious risk for abuse and corruption posed by permitting one person to fill every office in the government.” Which is why, he pointed out, the framers provided for advice and consent of the Senate.

What goes for a mere lawyer at the N.L.R.B. goes in spades for the attorney general of the United States, the head of the Justice Department and one of the most important people in the federal government. It is one thing to appoint an acting underling, like an acting solicitor general, a post one of us held. But those officials are always supervised by higher-ups; in the case of the solicitor general, by the attorney general and deputy attorney general, both confirmed by the Senate.
