Taiwan electronics manufacturer Foxconn is drastically scaling back a planned $10 billion factory in Wisconsin, confirming its retreat from a project that former U.S. President Donald Trump once called “the eighth wonder of the world.”

Under a deal with the state of Wisconsin announced on Tuesday, Foxconn will reduce its planned investment to $672 million from $10 billion and cut the number of new jobs to 1,454 from 13,000.

The Foxconn-Wisconsin deal was first announced to great fanfare at the White House in July 2017, with Trump boasting of it as an example of how his “America first” agenda could revive U.S. tech manufacturing.

Welcome to Day 93.

Today in one sentence: Biden pledged to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2030; the Senate passed legislation denouncing discrimination against Asian communities in the U.S.; the House voted along party lines to grant statehood to Washington, D.C.; Biden is expected to propose almost doubling the capital gains tax rate for people earning more than $1 million; and Senate Republicans released an outline for their own $568 billion infrastructure plan, which Democrats rejected as "totally anemic."

The Democrats are right, as usual.

What the Iraq Invasion Revealed About How America Works

A geopolitical and human failure on that scale doesn’t just happen because of a lie (or analytical error) about a weapons program. It happens because people let their ambitions and their fears and their big ideas cloud their judgment, or because they assume they can make big-picture decisions about the fates of millions of people without a real base of knowledge. Or because they are too scared to go against their boss, or their work is a little sloppy, or they listened to the wrong consultants, or they’re insufficiently worried about the stuff that’s not precisely in their job description. It happens because some people write memos that are more convincing than others. It happens because petty office rivalries play out on a world stage, with disastrous consequences.

But after spending most of a year reading and talking to people about the war, I’ve come to believe that failure on that scale happens, mostly, because of ego. On a personal, institutional, and national level. It’s ego that manifests itself in a refusal to believe that the critics of an idea might have a point, or that the facts might not support your intentions. And, most of all, in the notion that one country can just decide to change another, by force, and succeed.

Donald Trump, who’d favored the war as a guest on The Howard Stern Show, pretended he’d opposed the war to make political hay in 2016. A Republican nominee casting himself as an Iraq dove was a sign of how much things had changed in the 15 years since 9/11.

For all of the U.S.’s structural problems and catastrophes, it remains surprisingly functional on a moment-to-moment basis—because its people love money.

Contemporary Americans self-evidently do not share a common trust in any government or media institution. On the other hand, almost all of us still appreciate and believe in the institution of the United States dollar, and the ways it can be earned and spent.

The most popular thing that both of the last two presidents have done was giving away money, to everyone, to do whatever. Leftists like direct stimulus spending because it’s egalitarian; the business community likes direct stimulus spending because it gets spent at their businesses; and people who don’t care about political ideology like direct stimulus spending because, hey, free money! From New York to California, Alabama to Wyoming, Americans who would not be able to engage in any practice related to civics, education, or religion for more than one half-hour without developing a furious, George Soros–related disagreement coexist more or less smoothly together in workplaces (making money) and at malls, stores, and restaurants (spending money). The only kinds of TV shows any given person in the country can discuss with any other—Shark Tank, House Hunters, Fixer Upper, and so forth—are either about getting paid or getting a good deal.

Catastrophism: theory that America has largely been shaped by violence

The level of Republican pessimism is off the charts. A February Economist-YouGov poll asked Americans which statement is closest to their view: “It’s a big, beautiful world, mostly full of good people, and we must find a way to embrace each other and not allow ourselves to become isolated” or “Our lives are threatened by terrorists, criminals and illegal immigrants, and our priority should be to protect ourselves.”

Over 75 percent of Biden voters chose “a big, beautiful world.” Two-thirds of Trump voters chose “our lives are threatened.” – https://docs.cdn.yougov.com/3at75tb28w/econTabReport.pdf

This level of catastrophism, nearly despair, has fed into an amped-up warrior mentality.

“The decent know that they must become ruthless. They must become the stuff of nightmares,” Jack Kerwick writes in the Trumptard magazine American Greatness. “The good man must spare not a moment to train, in both body and mind, to become the monster that he may need to become in order to slay the monsters that prey upon the vulnerable.” – https://amgreatness.com/2021/04/12/good-people-must-be-dangerous-peopl
e
/

With this view, the Jan. 6 insurrection was not a shocking descent into lawlessness but practice for the war ahead. A week after the siege, nearly a quarter of Republicans polled said violence can be acceptable to achieve political goals. William Saletan of Slate recently rounded up the evidence showing how many Republican politicians are now cheering the Jan. 6 crowd, voting against resolutions condemning them. – https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2021/04/republican-party-sympathiz
e-capitol-insurrection.html

The GOP response to the Biden agenda has been anemic because the base doesn’t care about mere legislation, just their own cultural standing. I can tell a story in which the Trumptards self-marginalize or exhaust themselves. Permanent catastrophism is hard. But apocalyptic pessimism has a tendency to deteriorate into nihilism, and the Trumptards may eventually turn to a new strong man to salve the darkness and chaos inside themselves.

TEXAS REPUBLICANS ARE TAKING VOTER SUPPRESSION TO THE NEXT LEVEL
“It’s about race,” the NAACP’s Sherrilyn Ifill said of provisions directly targeting densely populated areas in the state, as Republicans nationwide push bills to severely restrict voting—and possibly subvert future contests.

“It’s about race,” Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, tweeted in response to the Times story. “And every time we use another descriptor ‘Democrat-run cities,’ ‘urban areas,’ we draw attention away from the fact that voter suppression is a fundamentally racist project.”

While “the next big voting rights fight is in Texas,” as Vox recently noted, GOP-controlled legislatures across the country are seizing on lies about widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election to suppress the vote ahead of future contests. Georgia’s restrictive new law sparking national outrage and Arizona attempting to change the mail-in voting process in a now-stalled election bill are among such efforts. President Joe Biden won both of those states in November; Donald Trump got just over 52% of the vote in Texas, where, as the Times notes, there’s “a booming population that is growing more diverse.”

Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II

Slavery by Another Name is a 90 minute documentary that challenges one of America's most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation of 1863.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Wall Street Journal senior writer Douglas A. Blackmon, the documentary explores the little-known story of the post-Emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the South that persisted well into the 20th century. Produced by Twin Cities Public Television and premiering on PBS early 2012.

On July 31, 1903, a letter to President Theodore Roosevelt arrived at the White House from Carrie Kinsey an African American woman in Bainbridge, Georgia. Her fourteen-year-old brother, James Robinson, had been abducted a year earlier and sold to a plantation. Local police would take no interest. "Mr. President," wrote Mrs. Kinsey. "They won’t let me have him.... He has done nothing for them to have him in chains so I write to you for your help." Like the vast majority of such pleas, her letter was slipped into a small rectangular folder at the Department of Justice and tagged with a reference number, in this case 12007.4 No further action was ever recorded. Her letter lies today in the National Archives.

A world in which the seizure and sale of a black man—even a black child— was viewed as neither criminal nor extraordinary had reemerged. Millions of blacks lived in that shadow—as forced laborers or their family members, or African Americans in terror of the system’s caprice. The practice would not fully recede from their lives until the dawn of World War II, when profound global forces began to touch the lives of black Americans for the first time since the era of the international abolition movement a century earlier, prior to the Civil War.

Slave Traders Knew Exactly What They Were Doing
A new history of three 19th-century human traffickers explodes all the old excuses.

Quote:

Why would someone ever get into the business of selling other human beings? That’s the dark question that drove historian Joshua Rothman to write The Ledger and the Chain: How Domestic Slave Traders Shaped America, his tremendous new book about the lives of 19th-century businessmen Isaac Franklin, John Armfield, and Rice Ballard. “The observation that Franklin, Armfield, and Ballard lived in a nation that sanctioned and rewarded the market exchange of people as property is true,” Rothman begins. “But it is inadequate.” From there, the history intertwines a careful biography of a very successful business with unflinching attention to the monstrosity that business was built upon.

The Ledger and the Chain tells the story of how these three men profited from the United States’ decision to outlaw the foreign slave trade, in 1808. The change, of course, did not put an end to slavery inside the United States, and because the slaveholding states of the Upper South were finding that their land was increasingly difficult to work after decades of tobacco cultivation, they profited by selling people further South, where cotton and sugar production was booming.

If you look back in history, American democracy has been crazy before. In fact, in the years between the Civil War and the turn of the 20th century, U.S. politics was far more unruly, violent and corrupt than it’s been before or since, for politicians and ordinary Americans alike.

The volume of politics in the late 1800s drowns out anything any living American has experienced. For one thing, that era saw the highest turnouts in U.S. history. Imagine if, instead of the impressive 66 percent of eligible voters who went to the polls last November, the 2020 election drew a turnout of 82 percent, as in 1876. Or if, instead of being decided by hundreds of thousands of votes in a half-dozen swing states, elections were won, as in 1884, by just 1,047 voters in one state. Or if, instead of lies about widespread fraud, tens of thousands of votes really were stolen at each election.

Or consider living in an age when, instead of individual incidents of political violence, the news contained so many outrages that the papers could barely list them all: Black voters murdered during Reconstruction, organized labor crushed with brute force, urban machines warring like gangs, regular “knockdowns” and “awlings” — when campaigners actually stabbed people with awls to keep them from voting for the opposition. Literally thousands of people died in political warfare. These were the years, after all, that saw three of the four presidential assassinations in American history.

In the late 1800s, one congressman was murdered every seven years, on average; in the 20th century, it was one every 25. How did 19th century politics get so broken?

It needed to be tied to inflation like SS since the beginning so businesses could plan for the change. Raising the minimum wage by more than double isn't the way it should be done, especially not during a Democrat driven plandemic that already destroyed a record number of restaurants and small businesses who don't have fuck you money like Bezos.

Yes. I have. Coushiest jobs given to the people least qualified to fill quotas. They've already got the best health insurance money can buy, pensions funded by states that go into bankruptcy to fund them. Now they'll get $15 minimum wage while everybody else is working for $7.25 because they haven't raised the actual minimum wage a quarter since 2009.

Quote:

Bullshit. Payday loans have been destroying lives LONG before Trump was in office.

And after the "free money" of the Bush Era stopped, most of my credit cards have a 11.99% to 24.99% rate even though my credit score is 820. Back in the early 2000's they averaged 7.99% to 9.99% with a score of 745. This is despite the fact that FED interest rates are near NIL.

It's never concerned me since I haven't paid a dime in interest since August of 2005, but regular credit cards are almost as bad as a Payday loan these days, and that started and increased during Obama's 8 years in office and never reversed course.

I've made over $2,000 tax free in the last 4 years with credit card sign up bonuses and maximizing cash back rewards by using the right card for the right expenditure. I currently get 5% off on gas, 5% on Amazon purchases, 4% at grocery stores and 3% on home improvement, and that's after the $150 to $300 they give me just for using the card on things I NEEDED to buy anyhow when I signed up for a new one.

The sad thing is, the credit card companies aren't paying for those bonuses. The people who bought a bunch of shit they don't need and turned themselves into wage slaves did.

"A penny saved is a penny earned." Ben Franklin told Americans how to avoid becoming somebody's slave, but they quickly read and even quicker forgot what they were told.
www.fi.edu/benjamin-franklin/famous-quotes
www.brainyquote.com/lists/authors/top-10-benjamin-franklin-quotes

The same forgetfulness continues today. Bezos told Americans how they could become as rich as Bezos, but they quickly forgot. Instead, they predictively did the exact opposite of what he told them to do -- they "bought a bunch of shit" from Amazon rather than buy Amazon stock. Bezos, same as Franklin, had long figured out Americans' addicted behavior and their mental weaknesses around money. From 1997 to 2021, Bezos told Americans every year what he would do to them if they didn't pay attention to what he was doing: "We will continue to focus relentlessly on our customers" and take all their money because Americans are unfocused, directionless and live without real purpose, trying to find personal meaning in consumer products, pretty real estate, entertainment for the masses, and political contests in which they are only bystanders.

The U.S. Senate on Wednesday voted to reverse former President Donald Trump’s move to weaken Obama-era regulations designed to reduce climate-changing methane emissions from oil and gas fields.

The 52-42 vote sets up the first official reinstatement of one of more than 100 climate regulations dismantled by the Trump administration.

Regulating methane gas is critical for advancing President Joe Biden’s goal to slash U.S. emissions in half by 2030 and achieve a net-zero economy by 2050.

Three Republican senators voted for the bill: Susan Collins of Maine, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Rob Portman of Ohio.

Yeah... well I'm ideologically opposed to the DOW and how all of that works. I made my money there before these oppositions, but I recognize it was an extreme amount of luck on my part, specifically with the timing both in and out. If you're making money in the stock market, you're doing it off the backs of people who work for a living.

I didn't read Bozo's book. But I'll never forget an old Disney cartoon I still can't find online where Uncle Donald was teaching Heuy, Dewey and Louie to save their money. I believe he had some sort of bank he gave them that would sing when they put a coin in it. I can't remember that part exactly, but I'll always remember the words "Take my advice. Do as I say. Save a little money for a rainy day".

Disney actually taught some good lessons back in the day.

I couldn't tell you how much interest I paid on any cars before 2001 when I paid off the rest of that car in full with two giant overtime checks I'd gotten, but since then I've never had a car payment and obviously never had a mortgage or college debt or some $100k wedding to pay for. When I celebrated my debt independence day in August of 2005, I had paid a total of less than $125 in credit card interest in my life. I had been bouncing my balance from card to card for a few years but then they stopped that free balance transfer, and whatever card I was stuck with at the end before I could pay it off was the winner.

I still haven't bought a flat screen TV in my life, but I own two of them in perfect working order. Hand me downs from family who replaced their 27" and 42" TVs with 70" TVs.

I've been spending far more recently than usual, but it's all going to tools I'll have for the rest of my life and improving my house. Well... except for that massive cost to take down the trees, but there was no way around that one and I made my peace with it before I called for an appointment.

I'll get all that on the back end plus some as long as the housing market doesn't bust again before I'm ready. If it does, oh well... I've still got the place and I can ride it out. And man is it going to be a lot nicer than it used to be... Why not enjoy it for a while?

Maybe.

Or maybe she would have just taken 4 more years to figure out you were the problem and dumped you anyway.

Global capital, crony capital and the centre-left

by John Quiggin on April 29, 2021
https://crookedtimber.org/2021/04/29/global-capital-crony-capital-and-
the-centre-left
/

Writing in the New York Times, Elizabeth Bruenig makes the case against an alliance of convenience between liberals and “woke” corporations against the threat posed to democracy by Trumpism. After acknowledging how desperate the situation has become, she presents the argument, to which I’ll respond bit by bit.
Quote:

Capital is unfaithful. It can, and does, play all sides. Many of the courageous businesses that protested North Carolina’s 2016 “bathroom bill,” for instance, also donated to political groups that helped fund the candidacies of the very politicians who passed the bill.
This is the nature of alliances of convenience. When the Western Allies joined Stalin to fight against Hitler they had no (or at least few) illusions about him, and didn’t rely on him to keep his word any longer than necessary, or to refrain from undermining them in other quarters.
Quote:

It isn’t possible to cooperate with capital on social matters while fighting them in other theaters; capital can fight you in all theaters at once, all while enjoying public adulation for helping you, as well.
This simply isn’t correct as the Biden Administration is showing. Despite co-operating with capital on social matters. Biden has proposed substantial increases in corporate tax rates and global action against corporate tax avoidance. In this context, it is the position of capital that has been weakened by the toxicity of its usual allies, the Republicans.
Quote:

Setting aside the fact that capital can in a single moment be both heroic and diabolical — Amazon wants you to be able to vote, but it would prefer if you didn’t unionize — it is, incredibly, even less democratic, accountable and responsive than our ramshackle democracy. Capital rallies to the defense of democracy while aggressively quashing that very thing in the workplaces where its workers labor.
Again, this is what happens in an alliance of this kind. Fights over unionization go on, in parallel with an alliance over the right to vote. Once again, it’s the corporations who face the bigger problem here, with opportunistic Republicans pretending to back the rights of the workers.
Quote:

I have no idea what to do about this other than know it for what it is. If it were ever the case that knowledge was power, it certainly isn’t so anymore: Knowledge is more widely dispersed than ever; power remains notably concentrated. But knowledge confers a certain dignity. It’s worse to be powerless and unaware than to be powerless and perfectly clear on where you stand.
This is a counsel of despair, without any real basis. Bruenig gives no reason to suppose that the fight for democracy can’t be won, even if it requires alliances between groups with interests that are otherwise opposed. But if the Republicans can be held at bay long enough to allow the passage of strong voting rights law, they will have to reform themselves or face permanent minority status. Getting to that point (for example, by winning bigger majorities in both Houses of Congress in 2022, then scrapping the filibuster) will be difficult, but not impossible.

An important limitation of Bruenig’s analysis is that she treats “capital” as a unitary force. There is a sharp division between global corporations, with a long-run interest in the preservation of the rule of law under a democratic government, and the crony capitalists, epitomized by Trump himself, for whom the object is to extract as much as possible from the US economy, as quickly as they can.

Someone with more expertise than me could interpret all this in terms of the “fractions of capital” idea put forward by Poulantzas and others in C20. A search on those terms produced this piece in The Guardian, which covers some of those points: www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jan/20/understand-politics-capi

LOL

So are we finally admitting I was right all along and the Democrats can't break the filibuster even though the media told you for months now that they can and will?

You're obviously not a chess player, because if the Democrats ever actually broke the filibuster they'd have also better damn well made sure they broke the election process so thoroughly in America that Republicans could never hold a majority again.

I think it would be an excellent idea if there was no filibuster. The Republicans would have no excuse for not, giving one example, replacing Obamacare with something better. The GOP didn't have anything better for Obamacare. There was no draft bill. Nothing at all. That was why their strategy was repeal and, who knows when, replace Obamacare. The entire policy of the GOP is to do nothing. When in the majority, they do nothing, other than not enforcing tax laws and pollution laws. When in the minority, they need the filibuster to make sure the Democrats do nothing.

To repeat what I don't think a Trumptard can ever really understand: When the government does nothing, the top 1% wealthiest Americans become the de facto rulers of America, which is very fine with the 1%.

In 1751, Benjamin Franklin wrote an essay that makes clear that anyone can be classified as “white” or read out of the white race, depending on the needs of the moment.

Franklin was desperate to keep the British colonies “white,” but by white, he didn’t mean European. For Franklin, only the English and Saxons counted. Germans, Swedes, Russians, and the French were “swarthy,” and thus “will never adopt our Language or Customs, any more than they can acquire our Complexion.”

At the same time, the English were colonizing Ireland and demoting its nearly translucent inhabitants to nonwhite. A famous British clergyman named Charles Kingsley, extremely liberal by the standards of the day, wrote home from a trip to Sligo that the people somehow had skin “as white as ours” but nevertheless were subhuman “chimpanzees.” In the U.S., the Irish were the standard by which nonwhiteness was measured, to the extent that African Americans were sometimes referred to as “smoked Irish.”

Of course, America eventually promoted the Irish to white, on the condition that they would be team players. Across the world in South Africa, the apartheid regime decided that Japanese immigrants were loyal enough to be “honorary whites.” The sorting process can even be seen in real time in a 1949 Atlantic article by a friend of Franklin D. Roosevelt about his trip to the newly born Israel. The country, he explained, could be useful as “the best guarantee” for Western interests in the area. Jewish people, who had previously been “moth-eaten” and “grease-spotted,” now possessed “physical beauty, healthy vitality, politeness, good nature” and were comparable to Thomas Jefferson. Arab people were in the way but “about as dangerous as so many North American Indians,” and therefore nonwhite and “foul, diseased, smelling, rotting, and pullulating with vermin.”

Vanished From the Earth

As an evangelical kid, I was terrified of the rapture—and so was everyone I knew. Years after I left the faith, I wanted to understand the power it held over us all.

My father still goes to the same church I haven’t been to in five years. He still believes many of the same things. He works for a telecommunications company, making sure the servers and circuitry that bring the internet to you don’t shut down. He knows his overtime hours will never accrue into meaningful wealth; he knows that despite his best efforts he is one bad day from losing his home, his car, his life. He sits in a congregation of people who are also aware of this, the cheapness of life.

So they make a bargain, the only one that makes sense, the one that countless others have made in countless pews: They will stake their claim on the imagined apocalypse of the rapture because, at the very least, that is the doom that will save them in the end. If they’re wrong, they get what’s coming to them anyway: an unremarkable death in a world that was hostile to them, their hopes firmly planted on what comes next. And if they’re right?

“There’s an underlining of joy,” my father tells me, “because you know he’s preparing a place where all these elements that affect us and are attacking us here, in this flesh now—he has promised us that we won’t have any of that when he comes to get us. Because he’s preparing a perfect place. It’s not something to be feared. It’s a reward.”

He recites this like it’s a passage he’s committed to memory, because it largely is. I know those words, that language; I’ve heard it countless times from countless pulpits. I also know how my father sounds when he’s not reciting things, when he’s interested, passionate, amused, curious. It’s not like this. Then I ask him about a TV show, just so I can hear what his real voice sounds like again before I hang up the phone.

The specter of the rapture is unavoidable in America now. I see it in pastors’ sermons urging people to get right with God. I see it in the curricula of Christian schools that still maintain the United States has a part to play in the fundamentalist idea of the End Times, that state that the country must once again assert itself as a Christian nation, a light to a doomed world. I saw it in the callous inaction on and lack of concern from evangelical leaders about the COVID-19 pandemic and our now-regular cycles of gun violence and hate crimes. There’s a reason why the cliché is thoughts and prayers.

6ix, you stopped drinking, but never took the next thousand steps to become a sober and functioning adult with real responsibilities that match your above average capabilities. It is great you emptied the house of your hoardings, all that stuff you bought at garage sales, and you mowed, edged the driveway, painted, trimmed, jacked up the porch, scared away the raccoons living in the attic, drained the basement, but there is more to do beyond the house. Here something that will make you mad at Democrats because it keeps coming up as a Democratic policy that Republicans keep shooting down. Those Democrats can't seem to stop talking about and wanting what Republicans refuse to give:

The G.O.P. stridently opposes increased aid to families. Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee issued a statement denouncing “Democrats’ top-down socialist agenda.” During Biden’s address to Congress last week, Senator Marsha Blackburn tweeted, “You know who else liked universal day care,” with a link to a decades-old Times report on day care in the Soviet Union. (You know who has universally available day care right now? That socialist hellhole Denmark.)

What’s so terrible about child care? Interestingly, Republicans are trying to make it less about economics than about culture war, denouncing Biden’s plans as “lefty social engineering.” J.D. Vance, the author of “Hillbilly Elegy,” declared that universal day care is “class warfare against normal people,” because “normal Americans care more about their families than their jobs.”

So is that a true statement about “normal Americans”? And are people like Vance arguing in good faith? Well, at this point there don’t seem to be many normal people by Vance’s standard. Only 14 percent of children are growing up in “Leave It to Beaver” families with a working father and stay-at-home mother on their first marriage. (Only half of children were in families like that even when “Leave It to Beaver” was on TV.)

If Republicans were really concerned about the imposition of elite values, they’d call for giving families enough to live on without sending mothers to work. In reality, that House statement denouncing Biden’s plans specifically condemned proposed child tax credits for offering “welfare without work.”

The logic seems to be that providing child care is bad because it’s a liberal plot to force mothers to leave home and take jobs, but giving families unconditional aid is also bad because it would allow mothers to stay home rather than getting a job.

www.nytimes.com/2021/05/03/opinion/biden-family-aid.html

6ix: Luckily for the Trumptards, there is always enough of them in Congress to stop the Democrats, but Democrats will keep trying forever to pass laws that Trumptards hate, hate, hate.

The problem is that any of the arguments you have in support of Democrats become moot when they do all of the other things that no reasonable person would ever support.

Given how bad it is for so many people here already, why on earth should we be raising the cap of illegals to 4 times what it was last year? Why are we letting any of them in at all? Why are YOU letting the Media make you think anybody who wants to protect the border is a racist?

The Modern Democrat party hates white people. Particularly males. Every single argument they make is a racist one.

My old man was talking about a visit they had with my brother who moved to the east coast with his rich new wife a few years ago. He turned from a normal guy into somebody so far left that it would make AOC blush. He wouldn't let his own parents come over to see the baby unless they got vaccinated, and has just sent out invitations for her 1st birthday party that lets people know not to RSVP if they haven't gotten their vaccine, but for the last year they've been paying their black female nanny to raise the baby and she still hasn't been vaccinated.

So I asked him how their pet human was doing.

My dad kind of laughed and said what do you mean?

I said that for the last 10 years of my life, black and Mexican people have been my peers. I work with them. I break bread with them. I smoke with them. I shit talk the bosses with them. There's no bullshit between us like you see on the news all the time. We're just the guys and gals that do all the work and drive around shitty cars while other people make money off of our backs.

I said I was fortunate that I've had many years now, and even around 5 in my 20's to live and work among people who were born different than I was and to have gained such a perspective one can only gain while working along side of people from different background, rather than having them work for me or living in a bubble and never having to be around them at all.

My brother doesn't live in the "bad" part of town. He's got a million dollar house, and they're shopping for an even bigger and more expensive house in an even more exclusive community as we speak. His new "super safe" for the baby electric soccer mom van cost almost as much as my house did, and probably more than every vehicle I will ever buy in my life does.

But hoo boy... does he feel guilty for being white and having a Mom and Dad that raised him right and got him all the way through college on acedemic and sports scholarships so he could get an education in green energy that is actually going to make him money for the rest of his life without any college debt.

So he needs to buy himself a pet black human to read My Non Racist Baby to his new daughter inside their ivory tower in their lilly white exclusive neighborhood.

Then they can pretend that they're not the racist ones, while never actually having to be around any black people who's paychecks they aren't signing.

Still skating in front of the breaking ice

Eric Kramer | May 6, 2021 6:37 am

A couple of months ago I drafted up a post arguing that Trump was becoming yesterday’s news. He was off Twitter and Facebook, and responsible for a highly unpopular attack on Congress. Stripped of the powers of the presidency he would be forced to spend his time whining about the election and playing victim. The insurrection would give Republican officeholders the excuse they needed to distance themselves from Trump. (I certainly was not alone here; McConnell seemed to think this as well.) Gradually, Trump would come to be seen as an impotent failure.

This could still happen, but at this point it seems likely that I was wrong. I am surprised at the way Republicans are rallying around Trump and attacking Liz Cheney.

What does this mean for the future? An obvious problem is that Trump may win the presidency again in 2024. At this point it seems likely that he can secure the nomination if he stays healthy and throws his hat in the ring. He may not be the strongest Republican nominee in the general election, but if he gets nominated he could win, which would be a disaster. In any event, with Trumpism running rampant in the GOP any Republican nominee is quite likely to further inflame dangerous social tensions and threaten the integrity of our elections and the survival of our democracy. Also worrying, the Democrats may well lose control of Congress in 2022, and if this happens Republicans will take obstructionism to new heights to damage Biden and prevent his re-election. The bottom line is that American democracy is still skating in front of the breaking ice.

The obvious takeaway is that Democrats should use their fleeting, momentary hold on government to push through policies that will be tangibly beneficial to as many people as possible, and to make lasting progress on critical problems like child poverty and climate change. And Democrats and their supporters should skip the complacency-inducing talk about Biden’s transformational presidency and focus on turnout 24/7.

Ideally, given the stakes, the Democrats would also aggressively work to level the playing field of democratic competition (filibuster reform, voting right reform, statehood for DC and Puerto Rico, some kind of court reform). But evidently not all 50 Senate Democrats agree that we are skating in front of the breaking ice. I wish I had confidence the holdouts were right.

You didn't do anything other than what every Trumptard does: congratulate yourself for being superior and condemn the Democrats for their inferiority to you, with a snipe, a petty attack on Cheney. I have already heard the same old superiority/inferiority claims and Cheney sentiments from three different employees this morning because Trump is back online tweeting: www.donaldjtrump.com/desk/desk-s9g4x7x8zk/

Dude. Not only are you wrong, but you do exactly what you just claimed I did in literally every post you make.

Look at your post history.

And seriously. When did you fucking hypocritical idiots become cheerleaders for the Cheney clan.

6ix, you and all Trumptards predictably travel the same toy railroad track that goes in a circle, repeatedly passing by the same old falsehoods: "Trumptards didn't lie, Democrats lied." and "Trumptards don't have a superiority complex, Democrats do." and "Trumptards aren't racists, Democrats are." and "Trumptards didn't steal the election, Democrats did." and "Trumptards are peaceful while Democrats are warmongers." and "Trumptards love children, Democrats murder children." and "Trumptards are patriots, Democrats aren't." and "Trumptards are Capitalists, Democrats are Commies."

The falsehoods forever circling around Trumptards' brains are why Trumptards have a hard time staying in the middle class. Trump knows how to tap into Trumptard brains, pulling their strings and, with the ones who aren't impoverished, placing dollars into his bank account.
