Wildfires causing a major problem in my province.

Trans-Canada Highway closed due to wildfires.

Areas like 100 Mile House are surrounded by fires.

Victoria has declared a province wide state of emergency due to these fires.

It's going to take a lot of rain but supposedly there are cooler temps on the way for next week. There have been evacuations in the areas hardest hit.

The BC fires even made it into NPR reportage, and not on a good way. At the time (2 days ago) they were reporting 200 fires burning.

One of the problems with the current fires is the high fuel loading. The fires burn so hot, they sterilize the soil many feet down, and in high-clay areas can even "fire" the surface into a pottery-like mass. Once the surface fires are out, underground root masses continue to burn for weeks or months ... and in some cases, years... afterwards.

Not sure about Canada, but here the problem began with the Forest Service's dedication to putting out ALL fires, so for decades the tree density went from 60-150 trees per acre to 500+. Then Reagan reversed the policy to "let it burn" which was another disastrous direction.

What we REALLY need to do is actively manage the forest. I have been suggesting for years that dead trees (killed by drought and bark beetle) be turned into biochar and left on the forest floor. There was (finally) a proposal like that in the LA Times, to take down and biochar the dead trees, and use the combustible gases for on-the-spot power generation. The biochar remains in place for decades, if not centuries, acting like a carbon sponge to soak up water and nutrients in times of plenty, and release it in times of drought.

Of course, you can't do the whole forest that way, but you CAN build in fire breaks ahead of time. But all that would take foresight and resources ... two things we never seem to put together.

I hope your situation turns around soon, Brenda.

Sig,

Yeah, I figured the fire situation would make the news down there.

Since BC still has a logging industry the forests are managed and watched pretty good. Best guess some of these are probably man-made fires. Stupid people in dry areas with cigarettes and campfires not doing what they are suppose to. Not sure how much rain there has been in the Interior but dry lighting and so much dry grass and up it goes.

Places do build firebreaks up here but with a good wind and no rain. Fires can jump real easy.

Some farming up the Interior but also cattle ranches as well.

There is no denying Sig that when my province isn't on fire it is indeed "Beautiful" as the tag suggests. Lots of parks which include bird watching and other animal watching.

Skiing in winter on local mountains like Grouse just a short drive out of Vancouver and then hiking, fishing, canoeing in the spring and summer into fall.

Vancouver Island is gorgeous as well. Whale watching on the coast, tours up to Haida Gwaii along with visiting on some of the smaller islands that dot the coast. All kinds of water activities in the summer. Polar Bear swims on New Year's Day. For those who are brave enough to dive into the cold waters of English Bay.

I heard on NPR that Australian firefighters were flying in to help.

Given that when it's summer here, it's winter there, maybe there should be a northern hemisphere- southern hemisphere mutual assistance agreement to help with the fires made worse by global climate shift.

I've thought for a while now that since the snowpack isn't as good as it used to be, and it melts far earlier than it used to, what both the US and Canada need to do is reintroduce beavers. The multitude small ponds will hold up the water till later, that replenishes the groundwater that feeds the deep soil moisture, the creeks, and the rivers. There would be more water available when and where it's needed after snowmelt.

But right now, it makes me heartsick to see ecosystems go up in smoke.

The major fires have been in my town, and in my city, twice. One came from the west, two years later the other came from the east. But I'm not in the hills, where the fires were, a little over a mile away. I'm on flat land, behind lots of open fairly fire-proof space. The fires came slowly down out of the mountains, burning the grass on their way downhill - not their natural direction of travel - then petered out.

Even though I found an unblocked road and went into the hills to look at the fire chewing up the grass - because I think one should at least once in a lifetime - and had smoke blanket the neighborhood and ash fall from the sky, I've never been evacuated.

So at this point, I'm more nervous about the big quake that's supposed to be due in the next few years!

As they say here: shake n' bake.

But these are hills and mountains I've hiked in in the past. It's sad to think of the critters trapped in the flames. It's sad to see the forests reduced to black stumps.

I was hoping your weather would have broken to cool and rainy by now. I see no such luck. Meteorologists say that these stagnant weather patterns are caused by global climate shift. I really REALLY hope that your weather turns, soon!

We have had an unusual amount of "monsoonal" heat and humidity this summer. Usually, our air masses either come from the ocean (cool and damp) or from the desert to the northeast (hot and dry or sometimes cold and dry, but DRY, in any case). But sometimes we get air masses from the southeast ... Mexico, Arizona, etc where the moisture is sourced from the Gulf of Mexico and/or the Gulf of California.

For some reason, it's been especially prominent this year. It seems like MOST days have been stickier than usual.

I was hoping to find a satellite picture of the north pole; you can often very clearly see the high-pressure ridges and low-pressure swirls extending southward, looking almost like a five- or six-petaled flower sitting over the north pole.

This "lobed" pattern is what makes some areas hot and others cold; normally it rotates slowly over the globe but recently it's been getting "stuck" for weeks or months at a time. And none of the models so far have explained the "ridiculously resilient ridge" which bedeviled CA with the worst drought in 500 years.

BRENDA, if it makes you feel any better ... and I know it doesn't! ... you're not alone in suffering with bad weather. I just checked my favorite weather blog, and it really HAS been a scorcher of a summer, and humid too -but no rain!

I used to save water from the shower (yanno, waiting for the hot water) in a bucket, and take it outside and pour it on some especially thirsty plant, and send a thought up to the rain goddess or whomever and ask her to remember all of the suffering animals and plants. It didn't help (except that plant!) but it made me feel better. Silly, I know.

Trump is not the problem. He set himself against the Deep State's agenda. And the Deep State's been heading for WWIII for years.
As for you, you're just a Deep State useful idiot, furthering its agenda. So I hope you enjoy cesium in your coffee. You've earned it.

That Kiki. Shows my province and down into the US.

Not silly Sig. We all do what we think is right and that is a good idea of yours.

August, I can see is going to be brutal in my province weather wise.

I'll start praying to my rain goddess again. There's a lot of suffering going on in western North America.

That would be appreciated. More smoke and haze over my city this morning.

Had a peek at a weather site on the internet. Humidity going down so maybe the ocean breezes are starting to clear out some of this smoke and haze. That's a good thing if it is happening.

Think we are in for a long, dry August and so the fires won't be out for a while.

I heard that western Montana is having a wildfire season like no other. Seems to all be part of that long-standing high-pressure ridge right over the Rockies.

That I do not doubt for a moment Sig.

Friends up in Edmonton told me a month ago that they had an air advisory. Not sure about now. But there are some fires burning in Alberta too.
