That's what privileged people used to do in my day. Go to the slums for fun.

Noam Chomsky talks about this kind of stuff all the time. He even hangs out with low life reporters, but he does not give up his professorship to become a card-carrying proletarian. He is not sacrificing himself for the people.

I’ll paraphrase Noam Chomsky in a recent interview paraphrasing Marx: Society is turning into a sack of potatoes, just individuals, an amorphous mass that can’t act together. Trump made his fortune by skinning those human potatoes and making french fries. Chomsky blames the neoliberalism of the GOP and Democratic elite for the situation. I blame the potato-heads for being silly and voluntarily jumping into the deep-fat fryer because they were told by the GOP & Trump that hot grease is “Freedom”! Trump chuckles every time somebody dives into one of his hot promises and dies screaming because they believed in him.

Putin will explain it to you. Believe in him because what reason does he have to lie? Same as what reason does Trump have to lie? Russian President Vladimir Putin strongly denied he had any compromising material about U.S. President Donald Trump, in a televised interview broadcast on Sunday.

"Well, this is just another load of nonsense," Putin said on NBC News' "Sunday Night with Megyn Kelly," when asked whether he had any damaging information on the Republican president.

I should probably ram the point in, 1kiki, because you are a nut, but Putin and Trump have every reason to lie about everything. Chomsky pointed that out if you had bothered to listen to the audio. I know you did not.

No, let's let CHOMSKY explain it TO YOU:

Noam Chomsky: Explaining the 'Collapse' That Gave Us Donald Trump

... what’s happening in Europe and the United States has certain similarities. It fundamentally traces back, I think, to the new liberal programs of the past generation which have just cast a huge number of people to the side. These programs have improved corporate profit, kept wages stagnant, and highly concentrated wealth and power. They’ve undermined democracy. People have no faith or trust in institutions in Europe—it’s actually worse than [in the United States]. Decisions are basically made in Brussels; people can elect whoever they like, but [the EU elections] have almost no implications for policy. As [economist and Columbia University professor] Joe Stiglitz pointed out, it’s basically one dollar, one vote, and one of the reactions is just anger at everything.

You see it in both the Trump and the Sanders phenomena—different ways of reacting to this collapse of functioning policies that [once existed] for the benefit of the population.

I think there’s a kind of a tacit recognition that people should be kept out of the democratic system. It’s not their area, so divert them with something else.

If you start looking at the nuclear threat, you have to ask yourself a lot of questions that maybe are best kept under the rug. Like, for example, why did NATO expand to the East? In fact, why does NATO exist? NATO was supposed to be a defense against the Russians. No Russians after 1991, so why NATO? A lot of questions like that are quite serious, and of course, it’s not that they’re not discussed at all. There’s scholarship, but they’re not in part of the mainstream. The way we talk about it is demonizing Russia, and they’re doing plenty of rotten things, but there are other questions.

Now, let me bring it together for you, again, like I have in the past.

WHY DID WHITE MALES SUPPORT TRUMP? It was because everyone else has had decades - centuries - of learning to not expect fair treatment or well-earned reward. Only white males still expect in large numbers to be justly rewarded for their efforts, and are angry when it doesn't happen. And it hasn't happened for them.

WHY DID UNEDUCATED FEMALES SUPPORT TRUMP? It wasn't because they have some quaint vision of themselves wearing aprons while little Johnny and Janey Doe eat homemade chocolate chip cookies at the table. It's because they're smart enough to know that if the husband can't be the breadwinner, they won't be able to, either. It's either the husband, or ruin.

WHY DID DEMOCRATS SIT AT HOME? On the flip side, the party-line democrats - for all their sad faces and white boneless hands patting victims on the shoulder cooing poooooor yoouuuuuu - have not improved the futures of the disenfranchised. Are people better off than they were 8 years ago? 16 years ago? NO. People eventually figured out that the party wasn't walking the talk.

Trump won the republican nomination because republicans got tired of faux Tea-Party revolution that was just more of the same. Sanders got 43% of the democratic primary vote because many democrats had had it with their do-nothing party. BOTH OF THOSE signals should have been received as an indication the country was spoiling for a change. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2016/president/us/general_elec
tion_trump_vs_sanders-5565.html

With her business as usual policies and her baggage of personal untrustworthiness, Hillary was already a crippled nag at the start of the race.

You’re still on your Russian apologist kick. When the USSR vanished, its H-bombs and tanks stayed. That is why NATO continued.

There is no room in Chomsky's election explanations for randomness. As a professor, he thinks he lives in a deterministic world where he can explain what happened. He sees important decisions as rational. His is a very Ivory Tower viewpoint. I don’t think those decisions are made sensibly. The voters are guessing and hoping for the best. There is really a tremendous amount of noise in the signal and little to no careful rationality.

For an example of an election that looks to me more like a coin flip than a rational decision there is the Nixon/Kennedy 1960 election, which was 49.55% to 49.72%. American voters are always on a knife edge where they might pick a monster as the next President. 1960 is far enough back that you can't blame that decision on the middle class being unhappy about slow growth. There is enough history that you can't claim Nixon wasn't a monster. The vote was so close, you can't say that randomness had no effect. And there is doubt that Kennedy actually won the popular vote.
www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2012/10/19/did_jfk_lose_the_popular
_vote_115833-2.html

I’d say that voters in 1960 were showing as much bad judgment as they showed in 1972 when they reelected Nixon or in 2016. The Constitution is set so that a decision will be made, but nothing about it being a good decision. That is left to the big three: luck or fate or god. Chomsky doesn’t believe in those three. His explanations for political decisions exclude all three. It must be his personal preference.

Trump galvanized white voters without college degrees, particularly in the Rust Belt; Clinton’s team calculated that this bloc was a lost cause and could be ignored in favor of focusing on her base and trying to persuade white-collar voters she was the less risky choice.
Were these voters gettable? As Alec MacGillis reported, many blue-collar men voted for Barack Obama against John McCain and Mitt Romney because they thought he better related to their struggles. They did not think the same of Clinton, who spent the last eight years becoming synonymous with the global elite. The result was that, while Obama won union households by 18 points nationally, Clinton won them by just 8 points, and fared far worse in the midwestern states that decided the election. She lost rural voters by a 2-to-1 margin, again worse than Obama.
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/11/hillary-clinton-loses-2
016-election-214439

Clinton and her operatives went into the race predicting her biggest problems would be inevitability and her age, trying to succeed a two-term president of her own party. But the mood of the country surprised them. They recognized that Sanders and Trump had correctly defined the problem—addressing anger about a rigged economy and government—and that Clinton already never authentically could. Worse still, her continuing email saga and extended revelations about the Clinton Foundation connections made any anti-establishment strategy completely impossible.
http://www.dailywire.com/news/11631/5-reasons-hillary-clinton-lost-ele

The Democrats continue to blame everything but themselves for Hillary Clinton losing the presidential election in November, with the latest excuse being that the Russians hacked the election, even though there is no evidence to support that assertion.
While there is no doubt that Russia was actively trying to influence the election, they are not to blame for Clinton's loss. The main person to blame is Clinton herself.
Here are five reasons why Clinton lost the election.
1. Clinton was a terrible candidate.

Here is a long editorial about Trump and Putin. I'm not trying to derail this discussion, just add a branch to it about the similarity of those two:

Trump’s Incompetence Won’t Save Our Democracy
by Masha Gessen JUNE 2, 2017
www.nytimes.com/2017/06/02/opinion/sunday/trumps-incompetence-wont-sav
e-our-democracy.html

Can an autocrat be ridiculous?
Can pure incompetence plunge the world into a catastrophic war?
We don’t like to think so.

We imagine the villains of history as cunning strategists, brilliant masterminds of horror. This happens because we learn about them from history books, which weave narratives that retrospectively imbue events with logic, making them seem predetermined. Historians and their readers bring an unavoidable perception bias to the story: If a historical event caused shocking destruction, then the person behind this event must have been a correspondingly giant monster. Terrifying as it is to contemplate the catastrophes of the 20th century, it would be even more frightening to imagine that humanity had stumbled unthinkingly into its darkest moments.

But a careful reading of contemporary accounts will show that both Hitler and Stalin struck many of their countrymen as men of limited ability, education and imagination — and, indeed, as being incompetent in government and military leadership. Contrary to popular wisdom, they are not political savants, possessed of one extraordinary talent that brings them to power. It is the blunt instrument of reassuring ignorance that propels their rise in a frighteningly complex world.

Modern strongmen are more obviously human. We have witnessed the greed and vanity of Silvio Berlusconi, who ran Italy’s economy into the ground. We recognize the desperate desire of President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia to be admired or at least feared — usually literally at his country’s expense. Still, physical distance makes villains seem bigger than they are in real life. Many Americans imagine that Mr. Putin is a brilliant strategist, a skilled secret agent turned popular leader.

As someone who has spent years studying Mr. Putin — and as one of a handful of journalists who have had an unscripted conversation with him — I can vouch for the fact that he is a poorly educated, under-informed, incurious man whose ambition is vastly out of proportion to his understanding of the world. To the extent that he has any interest in the business of governing, it is his role — on the world stage or on Russian television — that concerns him. Whether he is attending a summit, piloting a plane or hang-gliding with Siberian cranes, it is the spectacle of power that interests him.

In the past few months, Americans too have grown familiar with the sight of a president who seems to think that politics consists of demonstrating that he is in charge. This similarity is not an accident (nor is it a result of Russian influence). The rejection of the complexity of modern politics — as well as modern business and modern life in general — lies at the core of populism’s appeal. The first American president with no record of political or military service, Donald Trump ran on a platform of denigrating expertise. His message was that anyone with experience in politics was a corrupt insider and, indeed, that a lack of experience was the best qualification.

Since taking office, he has been largely consistent, purging experienced staff from agencies like the State Department and appointing officials who have no relevant experience and often have nothing but disdain for the mission of their agencies. It’s hardly a coincidence that plagiarism has become a regular occurrence among the Trump team — from Melania Trump’s convention speech to the cake at an inaugural ball to an aspiring assistant secretary’s master’s thesis. If the value of political expertise is less than negligible, then the theft of expertise is barely a transgression. (The Putin government is similarly afflicted: A number of cabinet ministers plagiarized material for their dissertations, as did the president himself.)

Mr. Trump has communicated repeatedly his apparent belief that the presidency should be a job of simple decisions and clear gestures. This was why during the campaign he reportedly asked a foreign policy adviser repeatedly why the United States can’t use nuclear weapons “if we have them.” That is why, in the wake of using the “mother of all bombs,” he bragged of giving the military “total authorization” — because why complicate things by restraining the generals? It is also why Mr. Trump announced on Thursday that the United States will pull out of the complex, sprawling, painstakingly negotiated Paris climate accord, which he apparently made no effort to understand but every effort to recast for his public in deceptive, primitive terms.

That is why Mr. Trump fired James Comey, the F.B.I. director. Mr. Comey was annoying, and Mr. Trump, the most powerful man in the world, wanted him to go away. In his subsequent interviews, he displayed a clear lack of comprehension of why the news media and the Washington establishment insisted on creating so many complications in the wake of such a simple act as dismissing an employee. The sequence of events that followed — from the appointment of a special counsel to Mr. Comey’s expected testimony in the Senate — would have been predictable in a conventional, complicated view of the political world. In the Trumpian universe, however, one effective gesture simply makes a problem go away.

Mr. Trump has admitted that being president is harder than he thought. He does not, however, appear to be humbled by this discovery. More likely, he is, in keeping with his understanding of politics, resentful because his opponents — his predecessor, the elites, the establishment — have made things so complicated. If they had not, things would be as he thinks they should be: One man would give orders, and they would be carried out. He would not have to deal with recalcitrant legislators or, worse, meddlesome investigators. One nation, with the biggest bombs in the world, would dominate every other country and would not have to concern itself with the endlessly intricate relationships among and between all those other countries. The United States would run like a business, an old-fashioned top-down company of the sort Mr. Trump used to run, the kind of company managed through the sheer exertion of power.

Consider some of the latest revelations to have shocked the nation: Mr. Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, appears to have asked the Russian government, back in December, to provide the incoming administration with a secret communication channel based in Russian facilities. In the complicated world of American politics, Mr. Kushner’s behavior appears bizarre, dangerous and, most of all, inexplicable. In the Trumpian universe, there is likely to be a simple explanation, such as the incoming president’s desire to boast of a tremendous accomplishment before he took office, and his son-in-law’s being dispatched to negotiate an anti-terrorist alliance by making a few calls — the way Mr. Trump himself negotiated with Carrier, the air-conditioning company, a deal to keep several hundred jobs in the United States. Whatever the objective, pushing aside the accumulated national-security and foreign-relations expertise of the United States government came naturally to the budding Trump administration, which attacks institutions and attempts to render expertise irrelevant every step of the way.

This is one way an autocracy can come into being. In other words, it is Mr. Trump’s insistence on simplicity that makes him want to rule like an autocrat. Militant incompetence and autocracy are not in opposition: They are two sides of a coin.

I think your SJW brain just broke.

I'll rewrite the comment to be neutral:

I saw an article that explains how what you know about Democracy is probably wrong:

The mystery of the 2016 election was its normalcy
www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/6/5/15161442/2016-election-normal
cy-democracy-realists-identity

The article does have something worthwhile to say about Trump. It uses questionnaires and science to discover what was happening inside the brains of voters. Spoiler: what was happening was the same as what happened in the previous dozen Presidential elections.

Achen and Bartels present the main argument for democracy, the one we all learned in grade school, like this: “Ordinary people have preferences about what their government should do. They choose leaders who will do those things, or they enact their preferences directly in referendums. In either case, what the majority wants becomes government policy.” The authors call this the “folk theory” of democracy, and it is a persuasive, inspiring vision of how government should work.

But political scientists rejected that argument decades ago, and much of Democracy for Realists consists of Achen and Bartels running through the depressing studies that explain why. Voters hold weak and contradictory views about the government. They pay little attention to political news save in the months directly before an election. Their positions on key issues can be changed by small tweaks to how questions are worded, or ordered. They often assume the leaders they like share their views, or if they don’t, they change their views to accord with the politicians they support. Look no further than the sudden rise in Republican estimations of Vladimir Putin to see this phenomenon in action.

But if voters aren’t judging candidates based on their preferences about what government should do, then how are they making decisions? How, to put it bluntly, does democracy actually work? . . .

Take a 2014 study by psychologists Maureen Craig and Jennifer Richeson. They asked one group of white, political independents if they knew that California would soon have more nonwhite residents than white residents. Then they asked another group of white, political independents if they had heard another highly racialized, but less threatening (at least to white political power), fact — “that Hispanics had become roughly equal in number to Blacks nationally.” And then they compared the two group’s political opinions.

Even now, the results, as described by Achen and Bartels, stun. “The people who had been informed (or simply reminded) of the potentially threatening demographic shift in California were significantly more likely to lean Republican. This effect was twice as strong in the West as in the nation as a whole, producing a substantial 11-point increase in Republican leaning (and a 15-point decrease in Democratic leaning).”

In a follow-up study, Craig and Richeson handed some white subjects a press release about “projections that racial minorities will constitute a majority of the U.S. populace by 2042.” The group that read the release “produced more conservative views not only on plausibly relevant issues like immigration and affirmative action, but also on seemingly unrelated issues like defense spending and health care reform.”

It is worth dwelling on what isn’t happening here: Any persuasion about policies or ideas. These experimental cues trigger complex, multilayered identities. They do not make arguments about ideal marginal tax rates or America’s role in the world. Results like these do not make sense under the traditional or retrospective theories of democracy; they make perfect sense under the group identity theory of democracy.

Hillary herself isn't 1 cause. There are a ton of reasons why she lost that race, and most of them are her fault.

The illegal server.
Lying about the illegal server.
The Clinton Foundation.
Bill Clinton.
She's not a likable person, let alone candidate.
Her hubris.
Insulting half of America with her basket of deplorables comment.
Insulting women by her "I'm With Her" campaigning and then the media shitting on any woman who didn't fall in line and vote for her because she had a vagina.

I could name more... but I've made my point.

Pick a reason. Pick 3 reasons. Pick all of them.

She was a terrible candidate, and because of the Loud Left, she is still crying foul about losing fair and square and blaming it on everybody else except herself.

You are allowing her to do that.

So much of the national conversation now is focused on President Donald Trump, for understandable reasons. But I suspect that he is a symptom as well as a cause, and that to uncover the root of our national dysfunctions we must go deeper than politics, deeper than poverty, deeper than demagoguery, and confront the inequality that is America today.

Keith Payne, a professor of psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, in a brilliant new book, “The Broken Ladder,” tells about how inequality destabilizes societies. It’s an important, fascinating read arguing that inequality creates a public health crisis in America.

The data on inequality is, of course, staggering. The top 1 percent in America owns more than the bottom 90 percent. The annual Wall Street bonus pool alone is more than the annual year-round earnings of all Americans working full time at the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, according to the Institute for Policy Studies. And what’s becoming clearer is the fraying of the social fabric that results.

“Is there a smoking gun with all the smoke? I don’t know the answer to that. I think it’s vital, though, we find that out,” James Clapper told the National Press Club in Canberra.

Clapper insisted that, whatever Trump’s intentions, there was no way the US and Russia could be allies, because Russia was “opposed to our democracy and values and see us, particularly the United States, as the cause of all their problems and frustrations”.

He said he had a “real hard time reconciling the threat the Russians pose to the United States and, by extension, western democracies in general” with the solicitousness of the Trump administration towards Moscow. “The Russians are not our friends,” he said.

Clapper said Trump, then president-elect, had remarked to him “during my one and only, first and last ever, I’m sure, sojourn to Trump Tower” that it would be “a good thing if we could get along with the Russians”.

Clapper said he told Trump: “Sure, whenever our interests converge, and they do occasionally, fine, but as far as our being intimate allies, trusting buds, with the Russians? That is just not gonna happen”.

He told the Canberra press club the two countries could not be allies because they had irreconcilable differences. It was in Russia’s “genes to be opposed, diametrically opposed, to the United States and western democracies”.

Clapper said he had attempted in the middle of January to dissuade Trump, during a private phone conversation, from attacking the intelligence establishment in Washington but he said the intervention fell on deaf ears.

The president’s team, he said, was motivated by “extreme paranoia” about any material that cast doubt on the legitimacy of Trump’s election.

I do think you're clear and rational, for sure. Even when we don't agree on things you're always cool as a cucumber, just like I imagine Morgan Freeman has been most of his life. I've said before that you do the avatar justice.

I've been around here a LONG time, but you know about my state the last few years. I don't remember us having any interactions back when I was "well". I honestly didn't know you were a woman until you confirmed it just now. I don't think I attribute that to my take on you though. You have a male avitar, the name means nothing to me so without ever having looked it up it's gender-neutral to me, and you don't ever post anything I've noticed that would give a clue one way or the other.

Maybe G is a woman too, and even T. There are woman fox hunters, and some girls like swords (I think that's what T's avatar is, at least). I find both of them to be quite irrational most of the time, but I've never attributed that to them being female. I've always assumed they were male.

I thought Signey was a male back in the day (because of her avatar) until we had some conversations. I assume Riverlove is a male even with River's picture as an avatar, simply because of things that "he" has said about good looking actresses. "He" could be a woman that is into girls though, so maybe I'm wrong about that.

Long story short, I think we all make mistakes about this from time to time for a lot of reasons. I'm willing to bet that a majority of those mistakes though are based on the obvious appearances, and not some intentional insulting as G was saying that Signy was making about Second the other day. Until yesterday I thought Second was a woman myself.

I wanted Summer Glau to appear in Avatar 2 as Sigourney Weaver's daughter. It could happen. That is why I got the avatar I got.

Oonj is indeed a woman. When 6SJ referred to me as a male, I kinda flubbed off
clarifying, eventho I know most olde-timers in here know I'm a woman.
I sort of took it as a compliment, too: maybe 6SJ thinks I'm clear & rational. OK!
I grew up in an era ('40's-50's) when Men were mostly assumed to be more
rational & capable than Women. And I do mean, the movies brainwashed us with
that stick. Society went along with it almost without question as it had done for
centuries.
Morgan Freeman as my avatar: He's long been my favorite actor.
So who's my favorite actress? Hmmm. Make that plural, 'cause I can name several.

If you think my avatar is a sword then you aren't sober. At the very least it shows you still aren't able to focus yet.

Yeah, because anybody knows what the hell that thing is, or what it says underneath.

EDIT:

Oh... that's what it is.

Nobody can match my Google-Fu.

It does look like a sword waiting to be pulled out of something when it's 1" by 1".

And you are a member of this site why? It can't be because you are a firefly fan. You don't even recognize Serenity.

Refer to my edit above.

FYI, I don't recognize the movie Serenity as cannon. I'm only a fan of the original TV show.

Not too long after I joined, You sed sumthing to the effect that you'd only seen a few uv the episodez.

I'd expect sumwun who spendz so much time here to be a real fan. Even if youd simply wandered in wile surfing the web and found a plezent plase to settle in, I'd expect you to get around to watching all the showz and the movie within a yir at most.

It iz bizzar that you didnt no that iz the Serenity. It iz instantly recognized by everybody who haz seen the show.

HEY! Remember the old cold war TV show stereotype Russian spy who haz studied American culture for yirz in order to fit in? Ask him who played for the loozing team in the '58 world seriez and he coud rattle off the playerz without blinking.

Maybe thats a bit uv an exajeration serving az humor in Get Smart, but it wuz basicly true.

I like you, 6. I even persieved you az a sort uv Mal in our time & place for a wile. Your talez uv keeping your noze to the grindstone uv ordinary life inspired me to keep from falling too far behind on my own mundane chorez.

So... we know you arent a Firefly fan. Now I'm wondering if maybe you really are a Russian spy!

Soundz krazy, but still. Watch The Americans. If the GRU or FSB or whoever iz in charj uv placing deep cover infiltratorz wanted to get good intel on the enemy, they woudnt just stick to Washington, theyd put them everywhere at all strata uv society.

But actually, this gap in your knowlej iz better evidens to the contrary. Wut kind uv spy woud be SO careless az to not even bother to study for hiz cover persona? Youd be the goon who Ziegfried throwz in the volcano for getting tripped up by Max wen he asked "who wun the Superbowl last yir - the Cubz or the Harlem Globe Trotterz?"

An Avatar karakter az an avatar! Why didnt that occur to me till just now? Seriously, I'm az dens az ozmium sumtimez.

I'v occasionally uzed ANJeLENU, the anjel on my Nooalf & 7532020 websites az my avatar, but along with the lack uv 'e' in my name, I'd get an embarrassing amount uv attention from woud be latharioz. Amuzing, but it gets old fast.

Nah. I watched all of the episodes of the show and the movie. I probably said that I only watched them once, which to this day is still true. I didn't think the movie was bad... I just thought it sucked because it wrapped so many things up and killed off some characters all within a few hours. For years I held out hoping they'd start making the show again and just throw the movie away because there was so much left to tell until the movie came out. I felt the movie was an end to Firefly, not the hope of the series being picked back up.

There's a picture of Serenity about 50% of the time at the top of the page in here. I know what Serenity looks like. I just didn't pick that up on a 1" by 1" silhouette image. I knew what it was immediately when I found the larger image on Google.

About all the nice stuff you said about me... I might still be Mal one day. Just got to get my shit together. I'm thinking a guy like Mal had a few dark years that wouldn't have made great episodes too.
