I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Quote:

India’s prime minister Narendra Modi paid his second visit to the White House in two years on June 8. President Barak Obama was greatly pleased by Modi’s stated willingness to proceed with ratification of the Paris agreement to limit greenhouse gases, and this was the theme duly emphasized in the Western media coverage of their meeting.

To Modi, however, global warming was a peripheral issue. He is a foreign-policy realist who looks upon Obama’s climate-change obsession with quiet bemusement, while pretending to share his concern in order to obtain concessions on other issues. He is far more interested in the long-term geopolitical challenges facing India from the Islamic world to her west and from the Chinese colossus to her north.

Pakistan is perceived—quite rightly—as a threat and a source of chronic regional instability, and its deep state (as embodied in the Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence, ISI) as irredeemably jihad-friendly.

China’s explosive economic growth over the past quarter-century, followed less spectacularly by India’s since the mid-1990’s, has not prompted the two Asian giants to resolve their border disputes and other feuds of long standing.

In order to meet various actual or potential threats, Modi wants to further develop and assert India’s status as a regional power; but to that end he needs closer relations with Washington on a number of fronts. His strategy vis-à-vis the United States is threefold. First of all, Modi wants to turn India into a major global manufacturing workshop—that is the theme of his Make in India campaign—and he sees the involvement of U.S.-based corporations as essential to its success.

Given the stagnating USA economy, I doubt that the USA will now provide the market that previously acted as China's springboard. Manufacturing growth in India will be much, much slower.

Quote:

His second goal is to encourage the United States to terminate its policy of tolerating Pakistan’s duplicity in the fight against Islamic terrorism—as manifested in its schizophrenic attitude to the Taliban in Afghanistan—and to encourage the U.S. to look upon India as the only reliable and rational partner in the Subcontinent.
There is more about Hillary's tolerance of Pakistani fanaticism later ...

Quote:

Finally, Modi wants to diversify India’s arms supplies—most of which still come from Russia—but does not want to become (or to be seen as becoming) too close to the United States in the grand-strategic scheme of things.
India just signed a multi-billion dollar deal with Russia to develop and manufacture the Indian version of the PAK-FA (fighter aircraft). Much of the tussle over the deal was how much would be manufactured in India.

Quote:

All of Modi’s strategic themes and objectives broadly correspond to America’s interests in Asia. India occupies pivotal position in the Indian Ocean, the second most critical maritime highway in the world. Under Modi the Hindu nationalist, the government in Delhi may be more inclined to base its long-term strategy on the development of a community of geopolitical interests with the leading thalassocratic [maritime] power in the world—the United States—than any of its predecessors since independence. America wants to contain China’s ambition to break through the bars of the First Island Chain in the Far East and Southeast Asia
a geostrategic concept well worth looking up http://www.defensenews.com/story/defense/international/asia-pacific/20

Quote:

while India would be loath to see Burma (“Myanmar”) provide China with direct access to the Indian Ocean by road, rail and pipeline.

As for Pakistan, it is a failed state devoid of any right to exist. It is successful in only one area of human endeavor: in producing literally millions of unemployable Muslim fanatics in its 35,000-plus madrassas. Generously financed by Saudi Arabia and the Gulf kleptocracies, they teach hatred of the infidel and inculcate the virtue of martyrdom. It is high time for the United States to see and to treat Pakistan as a problem which simply cannot be solved (as I have been arguing ever since 9-11). It is also desirable for American strategists to start thinking outside the box and consider encouraging that artificial entity’s disintegration along tribal and ethnic lines. A Pakistan-free world would be a safer and better world.

I disagree.

Quote:

It is to be feared that the opportunity to enhance relations with India will be squandered if Hillary Clinton becomes president.

A controversial episode in Modi’s political career—the wave of anti-Muslim violence which swept Gujarat at the end of February 2002, when he was that state’s chief minister—resulted in the U.S. government denying him a visa in 2005 under a section the Immigration and Nationality Act which makes foreign government officials ineligible if they are responsible for “particularly severe violations of religious freedom.” Even after India’s Supreme Court found no such evidence against Modi, the U.S. did not lift the ban until after Modi’s election to prime ministership in 2014.

The campaign “to get Modi” was particularly virulent during Hillary Clinton’s tenure at the Department of State, which bodes ill for the future. As an Indian commentator has noted, “it is pretty clear that Clinton is not a friend of India”:

It is the Republicans who are more worried about China, and who wish to bring India on board as an ally. Democrats tend to like dictators and thus are far more enamored of the Pakistani Army—we have seen Obama’s and John Kerry’s largesse to Pakistan despite much evidence of their perfidy. It is very likely that in a Hillary Clinton presidency, her chief of staff might be Huma Abedin, a close aide who is a Pakistani-American and no friend of India.

America’s relations with India can and should improve to the level of serious partnership. India should not be perceived in Washington merely as a future southern link in the American strategic chain around China. Potential shared interests in balancing China’s growing might should be considered in the cold light of Realpolitik, free of ideological assumptions and wishful thinking. For the United States, containing China is an optional strategy: no vital American interest will be jeopardized if Taiwan is eventually reunited with the Mainland, or if Beijing annexes the South China Sea islands.

For India, the issue of who controls the strategic roads in Aksai Chin in the western Himalayas [just east of Kashmir], is both more pressing and more dangerous if not handled with caution.

India under Modi’s leadership bases its foreign policy on the old-fashioned premises of national interests and raison d'État, which provides for predictability and rational calculus. The notions of “the world’s two largest democracies” being natural partners (Obama) are not only misguided; to someone of Modi’s background and convictions they are also implicitly hegemonistic, and therefore counterproductive.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"Modi wants to turn India into a major global manufacturing workshop"

Why?

It's a failed strategy that brought prosperity to Japan, which was then followed by a reversal and subsequent stagnating economy

And China, which worked mightily to position itself as the premier global manufacturing/ export economy saw the problems of depending on a external market for economic health in 2008 and has since been working mightily to develop its internal markets:

India grows enough food to feed everyone, and yet, many people go hungry in India. Some even starve to death. 3000 children die every day of malnutrition. 42% are underweight. http://worldnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/02/16/10424930-indias-hunger-s
hame-3000-children-die-every-day-despite-economic-growth?lite
There is certainly no shortage of work to be done in India, and yet "the poverty headcount ratio ... in India was last reported at 29.80 in 2010". If India can't organize its work and resources internally, why does it think yoking itself to an export economy in competition with China is going to improve its status?

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!

Migration fears as Bangla zealots go after Hindus
Aarti Tikoo Singh

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world/south-asia/Migration-fears-as
-Bangla-zealots-go-after-Hindus/articleshow/52772620.cms

NEW DELHI: After reciting all his morning shlokas and mantras, 70-year-old Ananda Gopal Ganguly , bowed before the multi-armed, lion-mounting Goddess Durga, walked out of the temple, climbed his bicycle and pedalled slowly through the paddy fields. The incense and the oil lamps might have been still burning in the sanctum sanctorum when three bikers blitz through, hit him with sharp-edged weapons and slit his throat, leaving his head barely hinged on the neck.

Ganguly was hacked to death in a small village in southwestern Bangladesh on June 7. Two days later, another Hindu religious worker Nityananda Panday (60) was killed in almost the same manner early morning in front of a mental hospital.

Bangladesh is caught in a spiral of violence targeted at religious minorities, following a spate of systemic attacks on atheist bloggers, secular activists and intellectuals that began last year. The priest's beheadings, however, has triggered fresh fear psychosis and whisper talk about the arrival of the Islamic State (ISIS) and migration plans among the already dwindling Hindu minority in Bangladesh.

"I don't know whether it is ISIS or some other group decapitating Hindus but it is quite clear that this persecution is not the same as earlier. It is a new phenomenon," Kajal Debnath who heads Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council (HBCUC) told TOI from Dhaka. "Earlier, they would rape Hindu girls or torch our temples and houses, forcing Hindus to abandon their properties and migrate to India. It was mostly about grabbing Hindu land and property. But now they are slaughtering ordinary landless poor Hindus with no social or economic standing and the message is entirely different," he adds. A fresh wave of migration of Hindus out of Bangladesh, he fears, will start quietly.

This time, the journey to an Indian passport will be easier following the Modi government's decision to amend laws to grant citizenship to Hindu refugees fleeing persecution.

At the time of Indian Partition in 1947, Hindus constituted 31% of the total population of the region. By 2011 Bangladesh census, their numbers came down to mere 8.5%. In 2001, as per the Indian Census, there over 3 million migrants from Bangladesh, out of which over 65% migrated during and soon after the liberation war that led to its creation in 1971. The Census estimated that 50 Bangladeshis migrated to India every day, through the 4096 km long porous border the two countries share. Dhaka based journalist Saleem Samad believes that Hindu population in Bangladesh may have declined sharply in the last five years.

"Even though Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina elevated Hindus to prominent positions in her government, most Hindus remain marginalized and persecuted. There has been systemic discrimination and violence against them," says Samad. Islamization of the country "gathered momentum during the military regimes of General Ziaur Rahman (1975-1981) and General H.M. Ershad (1982-1990),"says Samad adding that the general perception in Bangladeshi society as of now is that Hindus are infidels.

Bangladeshi Hindus faced massive violence in 1992 after the Babri Masjid demolition in India. About 30,000 homes, offices and places of worship were destroyed. Hindus were attacked again under Khalida Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led coalition government with Islamist hardliners in 2001. The execution of Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI) 1971 war criminal Delwar Hossain Sayeedi by the Sheikh Hasina government in provoked attacks oddly against Hindus. During the elections of 2014 that brought Awami League back to power for a third term, BNP and JeI student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) workers committed large scale violence against them again.

Targeted violence against minorities intensified in 2014 after al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), now called Ansar-ul-Islam (AuI), announced its arrival in 2014. Indian intelligence sources say it is behind the killings of most of the atheist bloggers and its recruits are drawn probably from JeI. As if that was not enough, Al Qaeda's opponent, ISIS in Decemeber 2015 threatened to expand its area of operation to South Asia including Bangladesh.

Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), sources say, is inching towards the IS because of "its dynamism and brand appeal." Some Bangladeshis including Abu Jandal al-Bangali joined the IS in Syria and recently, Singapore arrested eight Bangladeshi IS activists. Since last year, both JMB and IS have intimidated Christians and Hindus. Three priests have escaped murder and three lost their lives.

India and China both started out as populous but poor nations 150 years ago. In fact, India was somewhat ahead since Britain had put in a rail system.

But China had a revolution and got it's shit together, and India is still mired in poverty, ignorance, and inequality. I wish they'd get their act together and start acting in their citizens' interest instead of pandering to western banks.

Manipur: India outrage after two women paraded naked in violence-hit state

https://www.bbc.com/

The sexual assault of a Kuki mother and daughter duo, who were stripped naked and paraded while being groped and molested by a mob of men in Manipur, is the latest example of that.

The video footage showing the women weeping, wincing in pain and begging their attackers to show some mercy is disturbing to watch.

The fact that the first arrest has been made only after the outrage in the case that happened 78 days ago and was reported to the police more than two months back doesn't inspire much confidence in the administration - more so since many of the men are clearly identifiable in the footage.

An ethnic clash erupted on the 3rd day of May 2023 in India's north-eastern state of Manipur between the Meitei people, a majority that lives in the Imphal Valley, and the tribal community from the surrounding hills, including the Kuki people. As of 4 July, 142 people have been killed in the violence, and more than 300 others left wounded. As of 4 July, approximately 54,488 people are reported to be displaced, internally.
Zo people are an ethnic group which inhabit areas of India, Myanmar and the Chittagong hill tracts of Bangladesh. The Assam Rifles (AR) is a central paramilitary force responsible for border security, counter-insurgency, and maintaining law and order in Northeast India. Its primary duty involves guarding the Indo-Myanmar border. "Children of Menasseh", known as the Shinlung in India is a community of Indian Jews from various Tibeto-Burmese ethnic groups from the border of India and Burma who claim descent from one of the Lost Tribes of Israel; some of them have adopted Judaism, also Bnei Menashe is a name used to describe them. Kuki people are an ethnic group in the Northeastern Indian states of Manipur, Nagaland , Assam , Meghalaya , Tripura and Mizoram, as well as neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar. The Kuki constitute one of several hill tribes within India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. Meitei also known as Manipuri is a Tibeto-Burman language of northeast India. It is the official language and the lingua franca of Manipur as well as one of the 22 official languages of the Indian Republic. Some have almost Shaman Pagan type Animism the belief that objects, places, and creatures all possess a distinct spiritual essence. Animism perceives all things—animals, plants, rocks, rivers, weather systems, human handiwork, and in some cases words—as animated and alive. Animism is used in anthropology of religion as a term for the belief system of many Indigenous peoples in contrast to the relatively more recent development of organized religions. The dispute has to do with a long-standing demand by the Meitei people for a Scheduled Tribe status under the Indian Constitution, which would give them privileges comparable to the tribal communities.

Why do posts about Hindu Street Shitters offended you and why do you hope to drive this thread off topic

btw you are able to think for yourself?

you do know historically and currently they are often allied with Moscow?
When not linked to Russia or the USSR historically they were part of a 'Non-Aligned Movement'. Belgrade, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, first Conference of Heads of State or Governments of Non-Aligned Countries. Meetings in Azerbaijan, Venezuela, 16th meet up in August 2012 Iran in Tehran claiming Lasting peace through joint global governance. The purpose of the organization was summarized by Fidel Castro in his Havana Declaration of 1979 as to ensure "the national independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of non-aligned countries" in their "struggle against imperialism, colonialism, neo-colonialism, racism, and all forms of foreign aggression, occupation, domination, interference or hegemony as well as against great power and bloc politics."

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

India is such a cluster I can't possibly imagine where to start.

Infrastructure would be a good start, I suppose. With better train transportation and electrical distribution you could consider things like reducing food waste by making refrigeration available, and electric-motor processing instead of hand processing.

So if they wanted to bootstrap their economy, they would have to improve their steel and copper industry and train a bunch of fabricators and installers.

And of course, a functional sewage system and water supply. But apparently the government can't quite grasp the nettle. To many vested interests would have to be crossed.
