I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

This photo means so much to me.

I've been - as most of have, or will - in a situation where I was dealing with someone who was incurably sick. A dying mother-in-law. Dying parents. A brain-damaged child. A chronically ill husband. I myself have been sick. I know what pain does to ME.

The feelings that get stirred up are so complex.
Guilt. You feel like you should be able to help.
Resentment. Because you can't.
Pain, grief, misery. Sorrow.

Scarred mother, scarred child. It could have become a perfect whirlpool of misery, and despite all that, their relationship at that moment was distilled into them doing the hardest thing of all: Taking comfort from each other.

--------------
You can't build a nation with bombs. You can't create a society with guns.

As always, do your research before giving, but they seem to be one of the few charities dealing with this type of shameful incident.

an old but interesting story

3 years after tsunami, Japanese man learns to scuba dive to search for remains of missing wife

Takamatsu's wife Yuko was at her office when the magnitude 9.0 earthquake that spawned the tsunami struck offshore at 2:46 p.m. At 3:21 p.m., she sent him an email: "Are you OK? I want to go home." That was the last time he heard from her. She was 47 when she died.

Of 13 people who sought refuge on the roof of the two-story bank building, only one survived. Four bodies were found, while the other eight remain missing.

"She wrote, 'I want to go home,' " Takamatsu said. "Because I know that, that she feels that way, I want to look for her myself rather than depend on others to do it."

Last Sunday, he and his instructor dived to a depth of nearly 7 metres (23 feet), spending a little more than one hour underwater over the course of two dives.

It will take many more dives before Takamatsu, who retired from working as an aircraft mechanic with the Japanese military and is now a bus driver, will be experienced enough to take part in underwater searches.

1KIKI

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

What that picture makes me want to do is somehow protect them from any further harm. To create the perfect strong wall around them so they can live their lives in security and peace.

And to kill their attacker and his accomplice and erase them from the face of this earth.

But that's just me.

How do you fix the violence and hate that caused the acid attack? That some threads in society teach and bless? Can you exterminate it by promising to exterminate the people who exercise it? Does that send the message that 'this violence and hate once were tolerated, now they'll be tolerated no more'?

I've read that what deters violence isn't so much the severity of the punishment, but its certainty. It becomes a constant factor in mental calculations.

But does that change minds and hearts? Or does the hate just go underground, so that all it takes is a slacking in the prevailing winds to emerge again? And to start the revolt against oh, as examples, feminism. Political correctness. The Great Society. Equal opportunity. Besides, here in the US we have the death penalty and also the highest murder rate in the developed world. Government vengeance doesn't stop the violence.

Minds are molded in early childhood and remodeled in adolescence. It makes sense. At some point you have to stop being a child and become an overtly sexual being, able to find a mate, create and care for young, and participate in the adult society on which you depend, and all it entails. So the brain undergoes a great revolution during adolescence, remodeling itself from the brain of a child and into the brain of an adult.

How we relate to each other as men and women, how we relate to our offspring, and how we relate to adult peers and authorities, these are lessons learned at home, from your immediate society, the larger society, and media. They're molded into the brain during the transformation. How do you educate those who were brought up with violence so that they learn something new?

I have no answers, but for myself, I think I narrowed down the question.

Let me just point out that the author left out vital relevant facts in the opinion piece. Doing that is known as cherry-picking. And whether you do that in the news, in discussion, in debate or in opinion, when you distort the facts, you've changed the nature of your communication into propaganda. But WE don't have any of THAT in the US, do we?!
