... and they'll be relocated to a local bee keeper.

I'm a little frustrated, because I had the option to have them relocated to bee boxes in my yard. And I think for the bees' sake it would have been ideal. After all, they seem like they were healthy and thriving here.

But I just don't have the time or the oomph right now to become an accidental beekeeper. I hope to be lucky enough to get another beehive at a better time. And in the meantime, the bees were rescued rather than getting exterminated.

I had yellowjackets. I left them alone for a few yirz. Didnt mind the traffic going to a little hole ubuv my frunt door. They didnt bug me, so I didnt bug them.

But then wun day I woke up to a swarm in my living room. Theyd chewed their way thru the drywall. I vacuumed about 10,000 uv them out with no end in site, so had to giv up & spray them.

We can have Aficanized bees here. When the guy came over to evaluate the situation I asked him if he could tell if they were Africanized or not. At that time we were standing about 6 feet from the exterior wall. He said that if they were Africanized we wouldn't be able to stand there - just the vibrations from our footsteps would have set them off. The other thing he mentioned is that when you have a beehive you take the top off every week to check to see if the hive is healthy - and they get used to you and become very unconcerned. That's one of the ways you keep them gentle. I learned all sorts of interesting stuff.

But to relate to your yellow jackets, he asked if I'd seen any bees in the house. You know - maybe 5 in the last 6 months. On the inside wall where the hive was, was a tub surround with a large molded acrylic wall. So that's something I got lucky with, because they weren't about to chew their way through that and into the house.

A few weeks ago I called a guy to get a hornets nest removed from the side off the house, since my land lady was on vacation I had to shell out $280. The guy got rid off it by using the garden hose and a really long stick, this is worth $280?

I wonder if that's honey that he could sell? Because if you're talking raw, organic honey at $6 a pound, he just collected $240.

Glad that you found someone who could save the bees! Mostly they just kill them. I think that was the policy in LA County, anyway, altho maybe they changed it.

I used to have a 15' x 8' patch of golden cosmos that developed over a few seasons from a sowing of wildflower seeds. My god they were the butt-ugliest color, IMHO (Hubby and DD liked them tho) 5 feet or more tall and very floriferous. One year, there used to be a hundred or more bees working that patch on any given day. Given the bee crisis (colony collapse disorder) it was a wonderful sight to see so many healthy working bees! But I kept thinking .... I'll bet someone has a significant beehive in their wall. After all, they have to live SOMEwhere. I guess the hive was discovered and removed because next year ... pphhffft!.

I've thought of having a beehive in my backyard, but my neighbors would object, I think.

I'm guessing wasps leave some kind of pheromone. Because I've seen them come back year after year to the exact same spot even if the nest is removed and the spot hosed down.

The paper wasps here aren't so bad. They seem very tolerant of people - just busy trying to build their nests and get their young set up. If I leave them alone they'll let me pass VERY close by - within 2 to 3 feet - while they work.

Hornets and yellow jackets are a different story. Even if you're fairly far away like 15 - 20 feet, they will come after you for no reason at all. Or because you happen to be close to food they want - like the hamburger you're trying to eat, or the trash bin you're trying to add to.

This is what we used to call a hornet:

And this is what we used to call a yellow jacket because of their bright yellow and black markings

and they typically live in holes in the ground

Paper wasps tend in my experience to be busy, unaggressive neighbors, and I identify them by their long, slender bodies and narrow pointy butt. They also make small open umbrella-shaped nests:

BTW Argentinian ants here are a big problem - but I THINK I've found a reasonably safe. nontoxic way to get rid of them using boric acid (not borax) and water-packed tuna.

make a saturated boric acid solution
Since you can't get pure boric acid in the stores anymore, the trick is to get the boric acid/ diatomaceous earth insect powder. You can make a saturated solution of boric acid by mixing the powder with an equal volume of water, and setting it in a stainless steel pan to gently warm (not boil) on the stove. The 'supernatant' - the liquid above the stuff settled on the bottom - will be a saturated boric acid solution. The stuff on the bottom will be a mix of undissolved boric acid and diatomaceous earth. Pour everything into a glass jar and cap with a plastic lid. (If you can get pure boric acid this works equally well.)
Boric acid is a 'slow' toxin. The ants will carry the bait back to the nest over time, where the boric acid levels will gradually build up in the food supply and eventually kill the queen.

make your bait
Mix some tuna and its water with an equal volume of saturated boric acid solution. You only need about a tablespoon of each (tuna+water, and saturated boric acid solution), max. Mash then all together to make a wet paste.
Argentinian ants tend to ignore sugar solutions and other bait without a strong attractive smell. Also, they seem to like the tuna enough to keep eating it despite the boric acid.

make, set out, refresh and refill your bait station
Put it out in a very shallow container in the middle of an ant trail.
Since I have pets, and I have a few of those plastic covers you can use on canned food, I used plastic covers that I put upside down and filled with bait. Then I took empty tuna cans, washed them out, cut openings along the open edge, then snapped them upside down into the lids, making them pet-proof.
The bait may dry out some, in which case just mix a little water or tuna juice into it. And the ants will eventually eat up the bait. Wash it out and refill it.

It looks like different colonies tend to set up different trails. My experience is that you'll need to set up a bait station in every trail.

In as little as 3 days, or up to two weeks, depending on the size of the colony, you should have no more ants.

I was concerned that the spiders I had seen in my basement were possible Brown Recluses.....

I never saw any of them live in action, mind you, they were just the carcases of brown dead spiders I'd find behind my basement furnature......

I'm not worried about this for me. I live so cheap in my sitch that I practicaly make money by doing nothin.....

To think that my 1 1/2 year old niece might come here though? I didn't let her come by again until I figured it all out.....

I actually thank the makers of the movie "Big Ass Spider".

The VERY spider the dude from Heroes said was a "Brown Recluse" was just a harmless garden variety spider that just looked scary. It was the EXACT spider I've seen around here in my basement.

You can bet your ass I Googled that shit after he told the granny hitting on him it was a Brown Recluse and he got bit because of Her advancements :)

Seriously though.....

If you ask me about that particular spider, I'll let you know you have nothing to worry about....

I've thought of having a beehive in my backyard, but my neighbors would object, I think.

You need to (discretely) look into your city code, perhaps online, or get a third party to call from their phone. The person who took the bees is from Downey, and he said with the small lots, a beehive tends to attract the neighbors' concern, but that a customer of his who lives in Pasadena keeps hives. He looked at my yard and mentioned it was 'nice and big' and was an ideal place for bees. But the impression I get is that you have to tend them regularly. You don't just set it and forget it.

I too react badly to steroids, though some more than others. And ... how does one even react badly to steroids, biological analogues that are supposed to reduce inflammation? I've not seen an explanation for that.

That being said...I love honey. Go fig. Where does that even make sense?

If I were them, I would be wary of honey with an unknown provenance. Also, I think they keep honey for the bees to live on until they settle in.
