Back in 1983, Ronald Reagan labeled the Soviet Union an "evil empire" during remarks before evangelical Christians in Florida. The president was warning about a buildup of Soviet strength and global menace, and the need to confront it.

History is now repeating itself. Today's Russia is a pale version of the communist regime that finally dissolved in 1991. But Russian President Vladimir Putin, famously embittered by that collapse, is bent on reacquiring some of that former glory.

Putin's Make Russia Great Again strategy is a font of international mayhem.
Russia invaded neighboring Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, where fighting rages on and 10,000 have died. Its illegal annexation of Crimea was the first effort to alter European borders by force since World War II. The Russian military, dispatched to Syria, shored up the regime of Bashar Assad and committed atrocities, bombing a United Nations aid convoy and targeting hospitals.

High-confidence findings by the CIA, FBI and National Security Agency concluded that Putin ordered a cyber and propaganda attack to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election and undermine public faith in the American democratic process. Russian "trolls" posted false stories on Facebook that reached 140 million Americans, and Russian hackers stole thousands of emails from Democratic leaders and leaked them. Similar attacks have since occurred in Germany, France and the Netherlands.

Other Russian aggression includes selling weapons to the Taliban in Afghanistan and oil to North Korea. The Kremlin also provides sanctuary to a rogue's gallery of cyber criminals, dispatches fighter aircraft that harass U.S. military jets in Syria and NATO aircraft over the Baltic, and sends submarines to prowl suspiciously close to crucial Atlantic undersea cables carrying 97% of global communications. All the while, Putin works to rig upcoming Russian elections in his favor.

The Trump administration's response to this mounting threat has been schizophrenic. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson writes in The New York Times that the Trump administration has "no illusions" about a resurgent Russia. And a suddenly tougher line emerged last month with the welcome announcement that anti-tank weapons would be sold to the Ukrainian government for defense against Russian-backed rebels.

Even so, these steps run contrary to President Trump's tendency toward appeasing Putin. The administration has slow-walked implementation of tough, new sanctions against Russia passed overwhelmingly by Congress last summer. The sanctions are to finally go into effect this month.

And Trump has not convened a Cabinet-level meeting on Russian interference in the presidential campaign. "When will all the haters and fools out there realize that having a good relationship with Russia is a good thing," Trump tweeted in November.

Reagan famously urged listeners in 1983 "to beware the temptation ... to ignore the facts of history and the aggressive impulses of an evil empire." Thirty-five years later, those words are again worth heeding.

The Russia Left Behind

A journey through a heartland on the slow road to ruin.

A Modern Train, a Rotting City
A few times every day, the high-speed train between St. Petersburg and Moscow barrels through the threadbare town of Lyuban. When word gets out that the head of Russia’s state railway company — a close friend of President Vladimir V. Putin — is aboard, the station’s employees line up on the platform standing at attention, saluting Russia’s modernization for the seconds it takes the train to fly through. Whoosh.

But Vladimir G. Naperkovsky is not one of them. He watched with a cold, blue-eyed stare as the train passed the town where he was born, with its pitted roads and crumbling buildings. At 52, having shut down his small computer repair business, Mr. Naperkovsky is leaving for another region in Russia, hoping it is not too late to start a new life in a more prosperous place. The reasons are many, but his view boils down to this: “Gradually,” he said, explaining his view of Lyuban, “everything is rotting.”

U.S. Destroyer Docks in Ukraine Amid Rift With Russia

Trump sold $35M in real estate in 2017, mostly to secretive buyers
The U.S. Navy’s guided-missile destroyer Carney sailed into Ukrainian waters Monday in the third visit by a vessel of its kind to the tense Black Sea region since August.

The Arleigh Burke-class U.S.S. Carney docked in the port city of Odessa as part of an ongoing commitment by the U.S. military to show support for Ukraine, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. The former Soviet country has been locked into a prolonged standoff with Russia in its east and south.
Read More: Russia will pay a “huge price” for backing Iran, Trump’s top security adviser said

In 2014, masked Russian troops seized Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula shortly after protesters had ousted the pro-Russian government of Viktor Yanukovych in Kiev. Russian-armed forces in Ukraine’s eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk have also fought against Ukrainian government forces for over three years.

The U.S. Treasury Department is finishing its first official list of “oligarchs” close to President Vladimir Putin’s government, setting off a flurry of moves by wealthy Russians to shield their fortunes and reputations.

Some people who think they’re likely to land on the list have stress-tested the potential impact on their investments, two people with knowledge of the matter said. Others are liquidating holdings, according to their U.S. advisers.

Russian businessmen have approached former Treasury and State Department officials with experience in sanctions for help staying off the list, said Dan Fried, who previously worked at the State Department and said he turned down such offers. Some Russians sent proxies to Washington in an attempt to avoid lobbying disclosures, according to one person that was contacted.

Russia concerned by Turkish military operation in Syria, calls for restraint

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Moscow received the news about Turkish military engagement in Syria’s Afrin region with concern, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday, calling on the sides to exercise restraint.

It said Russia was sticking to its position on solving the Syrian crisis which is based on safeguarding Syria’s territorial integrity and respecting its sovereignty.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday a military operation in Syria’s Kurdish-controlled Afrin region had begun after cross-border shelling by the Turkish army.

Putin: Grand deal now, or Syrian bust. Putin has to act now or Russia will implode.

In December 2017, Putin proudly stated to Russian servicemen in the western Syrian Hmeimim Air Base, “In just over two years, Russia’s armed forces and the Syrian army have defeated the most battle-hardened group of international terrorists.” It’s three months later, and Putin’s all-too-rosy December 2017 “mission accomplished” has melted in the February 2018 reality that the “mission has just started.” What’s worse is that when it comes to Iran, Putin has realized he created an Islamic Frankenstan that now threatens the very elements that brought Russia into the Syria war to begin with: To control Syria. Putin needs to cut a Grand Deal with Trump immediately, before Russian's Syria venture explodes in his face.

In the current state of Russian-American meltdown, how can such a Grand Deal be made? There is the Mueller probe, the Ukraine, sanctions, aggressive Russian military moves, NATO expansion. Where to start?

Putin has dug himself into a deep economic and strategic catastrophe. A recent article related that while an average salary in in Russia is now roughly $670 a month, Russia is paying its unofficial mercenaries in Syria $4,600 a month. The $670 Russian domestic wage in comparison with the $4,600 paid for being in the Syrian death warrant chasm is the ultimate indictment of Putin as a total failure, in domestic as well as international affairs. It is a symptom of the approaching total collapse and implosion of Russia. Putin is paying $4,600 a month to soldiers who will ignominiously and anonymously die in an undeclared international war with no real Russian strategic goal and domestically, Putin’s citizens can’t find a job in Mother-Russia for an eighth of the Syrian salary. This is a symptom of total system failure that Putin ignores at his own peril.

Where to start? Russia must take the first step and cede all of eastern Syria to the United States' Syrian allies. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Larov recently attacked the US for recent steps that he claimed "look more and more like a part of a course to create a quasi-state of sorts on a large chunk of Syrian territory. Autonomous, independent from Damascus governing bodies are being created in this territory, money keeps flowing there to keep them functional. Law enforcement, created there, is receiving weaponry.”

The F-35 could dismantle Russia's Su-57 'stealth' jet program without even firing a shot

Russia is struggling to fund its new Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet, and have only ordered 12 of the jets while the US ramps up its sales and production of the F-35 — a direct competitor.

Specifically, the US and India have engaged in some preliminary talks about selling the F-35, when India was initially a key investor in the Su-57 project.

Russia's Su-57 is still in a theoretical stage with few airframes built and new engines and weapons integration sorely lacking, but the F-35 is ready to sell

U.N. Panel Links Russia to Potential War Crime in Syria

GENEVA — United Nations investigators have linked Russian forces to a possible war crime in Syria for the first time, reporting on Tuesday that a Russian plane was responsible for airstrikes on a market last year that killed scores of civilians.

The plane carried out a series of attacks in November on the town of Al Atarib, west of Aleppo, killing at least 84 people and injuring more than 150, the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Syria said.

Now everyone is wondering when the ice will crack.

As things stand, Russian GDP is expected to shrink by 5% (or more) this year, inflation has soared to 15%, the ruble is trading near record lows, consumer and business sentiment is on the slide, and its companies are shut out of financial markets in the U.S. and Europe.

Mattis slams Russia, says Putin 'attempts to undermine America's moral authority'

Secretary of Defense James Mattis slammed Russia on Friday, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin "attempts to undermine America's moral authority" and "seeks to shatter NATO."

"He aims to diminish the appeal of the western democratic model and attempts to undermine America's moral authority, his actions are designed not to challenge our arms at this point but to undercut and compromise our belief in our ideals," Mattis said at a graduation ceremony for the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

Mattis also alluded to Moscow's military actions in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, saying Russia has "proven willing to use conventional and irregular power in violation of international norms."

Putin’s Secret Police Prevent 2 Million From Leaving Russia

MOSCOW — Russia’s Federal Security Service, the FSB, is preventing millions of Russians from going abroad. Its own officers have been told “nevyezdnye” (no foreign travel), and earlier this year it announced stricter border controls for those who want to leave the country, citing the “changed geopolitical situation.”

Several million Russians currently are banned, specifically, from travel to the United States, and more than two million cannot leave the country at all. The number of Russian citizens on so-called “stop lists” and state employees obliged to stay put after signing secrecy agreements ia growing rapidly.
So is concern among Russian elite that a new Iron Curtain, reminiscent of travel restrictions during Soviet times, has begun to descend.

A solid decision on Russia — for a change

The Trump administration said Wednesday it would impose new sanctions against Russia as punishment for its use of a nerve agent in an attempt in March to assassinate British citizen and ex-Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter.

The sanctions again highlighted the gap between President Trump’s conciliatory language toward Russia and the tough position taken by many in Congress and within the administration itself.

Trump, who has resisted congressional insistence on additional sanctions on Russia for election interference and other activities, appeared to have had little choice in the matter, however. Under a 1991 law, he was required to act once the administration determined Russian responsibility for a chemical or biological weapons attack.

A release from the State Department said that such determination had now been made by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the attack this spring in Salisbury, England — following a British government conclusion that the administration had said months ago it accepted.

One is tempted to see this as damage control after President Trump’s Helsinki performance and criticism over his lack of personal involvement in preventing midterm election interference. Alternatively, cynics might say this is an attempt to show special counsel Robert S. Mueller III that he’s really not in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s pocket.

Russian Federation warns of 'horrible conflict' if Georgia joins North Atlantic Treaty Organisation

Once again we call on Russian Federation to comply with the August 2008 ceasefire agreement and pull its forces out of Georgia, ' said Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Ine Eriksen Soreide. Ten years ago, on their journey to Georgia, our leaders had stopped in Crimea, Ukraine. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia expressed concern over the security situation in the occupied territories and the deterioration of the human rights situation there. The two Baltic nations and Poland stressed that they are striving to make Georgia and Ukraine members of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Medvedev added that NATO's expansion is a threat to Russian Federation.

Think about it folks. This is happening because these countries are afraid of Russia, because Russia is a threat to them, and because russia has killed their citizens and stolen their land.

Anyone but Putin: Russians are starting to look for an alternative

It’s hard to lose an election when you control ballot access, the government bureaucracy, the courts, the media, and the votes of vast swathes of the population dependent on state support – and when you are personally endorsed by the supposedly admired national leader. Yet Vladimir Putin’s ruling United Russia party still managed to come out on the wrong end of last week’s gubernatorial election in Primorye region, Russia’s far eastern territory. With 98 percent of the ballots counted, the Kremlin-appointed incumbent was trailing the Communist Party candidate by 47 percent of the vote to 50 percent. The only trick left to the authorities was old-fashioned ballot-stuffing: the incumbent, Acting Gov. Andrei Tarasenko, was declared the winner after several dozen precincts gave him 100 percent of the vote on a 100-percent turnout in the final two hours of counting.

The real winner, a 37-year-old construction executive and regional legislator by the name of Andrei Ishchenko, has no major political achievements, no charisma and no proposals worthy of note. His personality, his politics and his party affiliation did not matter. He had only one advantage in the eyes of voters: He was running against the candidate Putin endorsed.

“Russians are slowly coming to the idea of ‘Anyone but United Russia,’” noted Boris Vishnevsky, an opposition lawmaker in the St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly. “This is very similar to 1990, when it was ‘Anyone but the Communists.’ The mole of history digs slowly, but irrevocably.”

That sounds exactly how Trump won the presidency.

I'd urge the Russians to be careful what they wish for.

Do Right, Be Right. :)
