Started working with a guy this week, he graduated College in May. He's 28.
Cannot multiply 2 x 26.
Cannot subtract 260 from 2600.
Cannot multiply 1/2 x 26.
His major was Engineering Technology. Yes, ENGINEERING.
He needs a calculator to do any of these functions.
Electronics devices are prohibited on our workroom floors - mostly because peeps want to play with their phones. This guy might be screwed.

Jiminy Cotta should be proud of how successful his Department of Edacumation has been.

Thinking about this more, it seems that America's children are the primary victims of this screwing - they got eff'd. Their getting eff'd was not in a mutually consenting way, not in the pleasurable form, so they got essentially raped. Yet the Democraps are always celebrating these victories in education reduction, the dumbing down of teachers and students, the continuous serial raping of America's children. No wonder they think the Serial-Rapist-in-Chief was the greatest POTUS to ever get Impeached.

Big deal. You can do all that, and you're STILL an idiot.
But yes, of course you're correct. This too, is Obama's fault. And his 'side'.

Partisan cheerleader asshole.

I always use a calculator on the job and to balance my checkbook. I'd never trust my own addition and subtraction. That would be reckless and dumb.

Really?
Obama created the Department of Education?
Obama is responsible for a high School graduate of 2004 not being able to perform simple math?
Aside from your lack of logic and comprehension, which we've come to expect from you, are you also forfeiting your libtard card?
Those of us who can think for ourselves and not need everything spoon-fed to us by Obamination's Talking Points would rather have somebody come over who can have rational thought like us, but if you are looking to start do9wn the path of enlightenment, we can start to help you. First, you'll need to start making sense.

You cannot multiply one half by 26? In your head, or on paper? You would need to walk for 5 minutes one way to get off the workfloor to subtract 26 from 260?

Not all by himself, but in small part. He voted back then. It's my fault too, I voted back then also. The idiots we voted in (both Rugs & Dums) saw to it that their asses were covered with legislation for testing & cool-sounding faux-pro ed. slogans instead of paying good teachers & trusting to those good teacher's works.
Education to the corporate mindset produces the functionally-challenged grads we're getting.
At least we can agree on the problem itself, eh?

In case you didn't know, they have these things now called pocket calculators, for like yanno, your shirt or pants pocket.

Yeah, too right.

And if you're going to have an edjiit for a president, and let's face it, it's probably on the job description, best to have an all 'merican, whitebread, born into the ruling class, alcoholic that other all 'mericans can relate and feel comfortable with, rather than...you know, anybody else.

Yes, I think I've read that here on these boards (surely then it must be true), it's just kinda in their DNA. Not the kind of DNA presidents need. They need the 'my daddy is a millionaire' kind of DNA.

In case you didn't actually read the post I made, ELECTRONICS DEVICES are not allowed on the workroom floor. Now, I do know how to operate a non-electronic calculator, but you make me assume you do not know how to.
So if you did walk back to a location where you were allowed to use your electronic device, and you entered 2 cubed, and it said 6, then you would just assume it was correct, since you rely upon your calculator to give you the right answer? If it said 9, then you would assume that was the correct answer - after all, it is 3 to the second power? There were people like you involved in the fatal collapse of the Interstate Highway bridge over the Missippi River in Minneapolis - they were called Engineers and they assumed their calculators gave them the correct answer.
Anyway, after returning to the location where you needed to make the calculation apply, you would then find the next calculation which was needed and again walk back to the location where you could use your electronics device to do your simple rudimentary math, and again return to your work location, and back and forth some more, just because your are incompetent to perform simple math operations?

The delusions of THGRRI again rear their ugly heads.

Of course, denial of fact is the hallmark of the libtard, particularly when it highlights one of their spectacularly catastrophic failures, after muddling with the working teaching methods which brought our nation to the forefront of worldwide education at the time.

Well If I might venture a sensible reply to this crazeeeeeeeeee thread, it's actually a more common experience that just within the US, as the same could be said for graduates here as well.

The explanation isn't difficult, nor can it be blamed on simple dumbing down by the US Education Department.

I was speaking to an older architect the other day who was lamenting that younger architects can no longer draw, but are reliant on computer programs to do it for them and they end up missing out on some basic skills about how they conceptualise stuff. I think what JSF is saying is the same, the emphasis is no longer on mental maths, and that may affect someone's capacity to do more advanced stuff.

It's the way of the world, for better or for worth that skills such as doing maths in your head, map reading, drawing by hand and numerous other ones are now not as valuable or regarded because they can be done by computers.

Thanks for the POV outside the US. I don't doubt your anecdote.
I was, specifically, not indicating what you suggested, but it is perhaps part of the larger picture.

I did consider it an abomination of education, how can kiddies understand concepts of number theory, how numbers work together, how to determine when the calculator or computer is wrong, etc? Computers and calculators are GIGO - Garbage In, Garbage Out. Humans need to be smarter than the paper bag they have stuck their heads inside of. They need to be smarter than the plastic cases and rubber buttons of the devices they rely upon to tell them what to do. If Suri tells you to jump off the cliff, or drive off the cliff, are you going to do it?

Saw Jeopardy last night. Kids week. 12 year olds.
One category had math "problems" for clues, the mathematical solution was the answer. All integers 5 or less. Either using functions of addition, and subtraction, or else using multiplication.

I did not see one single item answered. Not even guessed. Not answered. The 2 girls did not even make any attempt to try, did not even ring in, even when given twice the amount of time to solve the simple maths as the boy who did ring in on 3 of them, but never gave an answer. I would normally assume 12 year olds were in 7th grade, but I think one girl mentioned she was in 5th.

Of course, it was not fair, because they did not have a computer or calculator to do their thinking for them.

Saw Tom Selleck on Dawdling Doofus Letterman.

He mentioned that he had a shooting average on the USC basketball team of %1,000. That is one thousand percent.
You are correct to notice that Doofus was so math-challenged and submerged in libtardity that he accepted this figure.
