Funny that you left out the last line of that exchange. Superman says to Lois "You don't really believe that Lois."

And he means it. He grew up in rural Kansas. He allowed himself to be bullied in school to avoid revealing his secret powers. But his adopted parents, the Kents, loved America and believed in the founding principles and basic righteousness of America. They knew he was on Earth for a great purpose, and ultimately he came to understand that himself.

Superman went from being just a character in a kid's comic book to a being national hero during WWII. The Max Fleischer animated shorts depicted Superman fighting both the Nazis and the Japs. People in movie theaters cheered out loud for Superman. This was incredibly important because they had little to cheer about watching the real war newsreels of the day, especially during the first two years when things looked bleak for the Allies in both war theaters. Superman, almost as much as FDR and Churchill helped give Americans the strength to have faith, and the resolve to support the war effort any way they could. And the greatest generation delivered all they were asked to do, both at home in the factories and on the battlefields.

Actually I believe Superman was challenging Lois, the cynical reporter, to see that common ground and basic humanity already existed. She just needed to open her eyes a little.

I'm wondering if there is anything to get.....

No wonder "America" is laughable....

We all grew up believing in some unattainable Utopia.

WE THE PEOPLE, must learn to evolve.

WE THE PEOPLE, have lived very cheaply for decades at the expense of every third-world country we could exploit.

Short of some new planet of idiots we can exploit, WE THE PEOPLE, as WE know WE, are done....

Shit's getting very real very quickly. I'nnit' ?

My prediction is today's middle class American family will be Eastern Europe's middle class family by 2020.

But what do I know?

I'm just the Stupid Drunk Guy that needs help.

Don't come to me for help when that day comes.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I'd put this here. This is in regards to the landing at Normandy and the 'allies' (Russia excluded) 'winning' WWII. I didn't know the details before and they are astounding:

"The Germans lost World War II at the Battle of Stalingrad, which was fought from August 23, 1942 until February 2, 1943, when most of the remnants of the powerful German Sixth Army surrendered, including 22 generals.

Nineteen months previously the largest invasion force ever assembled on planet earth invaded Russia across a one thousand mile front. Three million crack German troops; 7,500 artillery units, 19 panzer divisions with 3,000 tanks, and 2,500 aircraft rolled across Russia for 14 months."

OONJERAH - We are too dumb to live and smart enough to wipe ourselves out.
"You, who live in any kind of comfort or convenience, do not know how these people can survive these things, do you? They will endure because there is no immediate escape from endurance. Some will die, the rest must live."

A good deal sooner I should think.
You're right, our collective way of life in the US of A is over. Anyone not already into their 20's is going to face a far different world than us older folk did.
But I've always seen this coming. It was a simple equation to me.

Kids who grew up in the 60's surely did not. We may have had a color tv and an air conditioner in our homes, but we were never so spoiled or naive to think that we were owed anything out of life beyond what we could go out and earn for ourselves. And growing up in the middle of the Viet Nam War, Civil Rights Marches, and Cold War tensions taught us that America wasn't perfect, but we felt damn lucky to be Americans.

Agreed.
'Cept, no colour TV.

In my innocence, I'd figured all the madness was a singular thing, that the War we were in was a one-shot mistake that effing us up temporarily.

Heh, WRONG.

Most of my friends had one in their house. It was kind of a status symbol back then. My dad held out for a long time, but he finally bought one around 1968.

Me too. But there was so much turmoil going on in America and the world that any bit of innocence we still had was lost by 1970. All we could do after that was go to college, get a job, get married, and start the whole generational thing over again.
