Abandoned his post, in the middle of the night, and gets " caught " by the Taliban .

Complete dirtbag is now being praised as some sort of hero.

He ain't.

How many aren't coming home because they died while looking for this coward ?

Wow. I heard some of this traitor stuff Sunday too.

We don't even know the whole story, and frankly appeals to treason/betrayal against authority don't exactly hold water with me. And I'm not sure they should hold water with anyone else either seeing the goddamn war we fought for our independence required all of America to be traitors to England.

The guy spent 5 fucking years as a prisoner of the Taliban one of the most violent and brutal theocratic regimes in the world today, I think he's probably suffered enough for whatever crimes you think he might have committed.

You can argue about whether negotiating with them and releasing those guys from Gitmo was the right thing to do and I won't even blink an eye, but trying to somehow spin the return of a US citizen after years in captivity as a BAD thing is just low.

Let his family and community be happy and let the guy deal with whatever demons he might have either from his choices and people dying about it or the ordeal in general in peace. Hell.

What would Au's avatar say?

[In the infirmary with a shell shocked solder]
Patton: What's the matter with you?

Soldier: I... I guess I... I can't take it sir.

Patton: What did you say?

Soldier: It's my nerves, sir. I... I... I just can't stand the shelling anymore.

Patton: Your nerves? Well, hell, you're just a God-damned coward.
[Soldier starts sniveling]

Patton: [Slaps him, once forehanded, then backhanded on the rebound]
Patton: Shut up! I won't have a yellow bastard sitting here crying in front of these brave men who have been wounded in battle!

[Soldier snivels some more, and Patton swings a vicious forehand slap, knocking his helmet away]
Patton: Shut up!

[to the doctors]
Patton: Don't admit this yellow bastard. There's nothing wrong with him. I won't have sons-of-bitches who are afraid to fight stinking up this place of honor!

[to soldier]
Patton: You're going back to the front, my friend. You may get shot, and you may get killed, but you're going up to the fighting. Either that, or I'm going to stand you up in front of a firing squad. I ought to shoot you myself, you god-damned... bastard! Get him out of here!
[pulls his service automatic. At that, the doctors leap forward and hustle the soldier out of the tent. Patton keeps shouting at the soldier's back]
Patton: Take him up to the front! You hear me? You God-damned coward!

[Takes deep breath]
Patton: I won't have cowards in my army.

And when you blind yourself to the realities of the world, and are ever seeking a kumbaya fuzzy moment, you get Chrissy.

Now, I'll happily fall upon a sword and recant , if the stories I'm hearing told turn out to be false.

But so far, they aren't.

Bowe Bergdahl apparently thought the US Army was the meals-on-wheels outfit that Bill and Hillary tried to turn it into, so many years ago. Sure, go help out the Afghan people. I got no problem w/ that. But he some how chose the wrong means by which to do it.

Oh, and the dude pretty much hates the Unite States, so there is that too.

He's not a POW, by any stretch of the imagination. What SHOULD happen is that he gets tossed in the brig for desertion and aiding the enemy. That won't happen, not with this clusterfuck of an administration. He's a HERO!!!

Total crap.

ETA - So what if this guy got disillusioned on the mission. What's worse, he turned on his own , and then put THEM in harm's way. Thanks to Bowe, 4 or 5 families, at least, won't be welcoming home their sons, because of his selfish act. Probably a lot more, too.

So yeah, if this guy really did freely give intel and helped murder US soldiers, that hate is well earned.

Ahhh, okay.

Read as much as that as you listened to the Limbaugh show today, huh ?

Facts can be ever so much a burden , huh Chrissy ?

"
The circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture weren’t clear.

On July 2, two U.S. officials told the AP the soldier had “just walked off” his base with three Afghans after his shift. He had no body armor or weapon and they said they had no explanation for why he left. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

On July 6, the Taliban claimed on their Web site that five days earlier “a drunken American soldier had come out of his garrison” and was captured by mujahadeen.

In the video, Pfc. Bergdahl said he was lagging behind a patrol when he was captured.

Details of such incidents are routinely held very tightly by the military as it works to retrieve a missing or captured soldier without giving away any information to captors.

Under torture? Because none of your cites indicate that he "freely" gave intel or was a sympathizer whatsoever. Disagreeing with the US does NOT necessarily mean agreement with the enemy - maybe he lost a friend in combat and was frustrated by the chain of command seeming to get more people killed and maybe he was suffering PTSD and feeling disillusioned.

Your cites do indicate that he needs extensive psychological counseling for whatever he went through.

I agree the guy probably isn't a hero - either he got scared/upset, or he was just plain dumb, and based on what I'm hearing it sounds like it might have been both. But getting captured by the Taliban is not a picnic.

I'm all for hate, but I think you need to let go here. I'm getting the feeling this guy deserves our pity. Sounds like he's been through hell, and based on what I know about reintegration and the other psychological issues I can guess he might be carrying, I'd wager a guess that he's STILL in hell and that it's not going to get better.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

See rappy, I was under the impression you were calling him a TRAITOR. Now, where did I get that from? Oh yeah, here it is

TRAITOR Bergdahl released.

Deserter I might have bought, if there were enough facts to support it. But TRAITOR? Unlike you who freely uses words you don't throughly understand, I looked up the definition:

TRAITOR
A person commits the crime of treason if he levies war against his state or country or sides to its enemies, giving them aid and comfort. Treason is a crime under federal and some state laws. Treason is made a high crime, punishable by death, under federal law by Article III, section 3 of the U.S. Constitution: "Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort."

Under this article of the Constitution, no person shall be convicted of treason, unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court. Treason requires overt acts such as giving sensitive government security secrets to other countries, even if such countries are not enemies. Treason can include spying on behalf of a foreign power or divulging military secrets.

So, once gain, you are wrong.

Byte - Bowe walked off base, and went LOOKING for the Taliban. His father , at a press conference relayed a message to his son, in Pashto

Quote:

His father spoke some words to him in Pashto, the language spoken by most Afghans - and most of the Taliban.

So, dad speaks Pashto ? Isn't that interesting.

And no, the MSM aren't going to be beaming the news that , soon after Bowe was caught, the Taliban conducted very selective strikes on specific sites.

Prolly just dumb luck though, huh ?

ETA - 1kiki, I DID use that word , traitor, specifically for Bowe Bergdahl. Based on the info that's out there, he's exactly that, and should be treated as such.

That article reads like his father spoke to him in Pashto AFTER the release - maybe suggesting his father has been told that his son forgot english and some translators tried to help him speak in a way his own son could understand.

You're making a lot of assumptions that his dad saying something to the son in Pashto - the language his son now understands - somehow indicates a prior sympathy with the Taliban, leading to your conclusion that he went looking for the Taliban.

Which is not something we can confirm at this time.

His choice to walk off the base? Sure. Whatever led to that choice? Not necessarily. Whatever happened to him in the Taliban's control? Not remotely.

He was US soldier and a prisoner of an enemy. However he got there, that makes him a POW.

You're saying he went looking for the Taliban, but nothing you've posted indicates that. Rather, it indicates that he intended to try to go over the mountains into China.

Okay, let's examine your pwnfest.

Traitor? Available facts cannot conclusively determine this.
Dirtbag? This is not a fact but a judgement of his character based on limited information.
Hero? No one but you posited that; any celebration on his behalf is a homecoming one, not hero-related.
Peeps that died searching for him? Look to those that ordered & coordinated the failed searches. If you should ever lose YOUR mind (like, more than you have already) and walk out into nowhere would it be YOUR fault if someone got killed looking for YOU? Aren't you USUALLY consumed with personal responsibility? Legality? If he was insane on some level, you still wanna go there? Of course you do. Doggie with a bone.

Best case scenario - for him - is that he was astronomically naive. Even so, his own actions put other lives in danger, diverted manpower and focus on other missions, just because he felt a need to commune w/ the enemy.

Generally , these guys kill Americans first, and then ask questions. I assume they saw some value in this guy, and sure enough, at the very least, they got 5 of their top commanders out of Gitmo.

( Which Barry has reminded us, again, that he plans on closing. Just as soon as he figures out a way to be President enough to actually make that happen. )

My guess is that they got LOTS of intel from this guy. From his comments BEFORE he was captured, I doubt much of it was via torture. If any at all.

And before THIS comes up, here's a good comment on it:

-Iran-1-500-Missiles-for-Hostages-Obama-Trades-Five-Guys-GOP-Heads-Explode?detail=email

Quote:

In 1985, while Iran and Iraq were at war, Iran made a secret request to buy weapons from the United States. McFarlane sought President Reagan's approval, in spite of the embargo against selling arms to Iran. McFarlane explained that the sale of arms would not only improve U.S. relations with Iran, but might in turn lead to improved relations with Lebanon, increasing U.S. influence in the troubled Middle East. Reagan was driven by a different obsession. He had become frustrated at his inability to secure the release of the seven American hostages being held by Iranian terrorists in Lebanon. As president, Reagan felt that "he had the duty to bring those Americans home."

The arms-for-hostages proposal divided the administration. Longtime policy adversaries Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and Secretary of State George Shultz opposed the deal, but Reagan, McFarlane and CIA director William Casey supported it. With the backing of the president, the plan progressed. By the time the sales were discovered, more than 1,500 missiles had been shipped to Iran. Three hostages had been released, only to be replaced with three more, in what Secretary of State George Shultz called "a hostage bazaar."

So GOP lawmakers are apoplectic about Obama not giving Congress the 30-day notice required by law before transferring any detainee from Guantanamo Bay, men who have mostly been detained without charge?

But will raise President Reagan upon a pillar, a man who sold Iran over 1,500 missiles for the release of U.S. hostages?

I have one response: shut up and sit down. Class is in session.

What basically pisses me off is that when Presidents go and do what they want without 'proper authorization' straying into the illegal/immoral, they can be lauded for it. An individual deciding his world is full of shit & bailing becomes this 'traitor' thing. Peeps like Rappy have no real idea of anything they're talking about, no sense of history, balance or justice. It's all about 'THE ENEMY'. The enemy defines a weak man or boy. Left dolts as well. When it's all about victory for you & yours, it's also about loss for them & theirs.
See how that divide & conquer thing works so well?

What politics? It's core beliefs. That's all it is. It's instinctive, a primal force, needing no fearless leader to indoctrinate me into believing anything. The world I grew up in barely exists anymore, and I find that extremely sad. They say living well is the best revenge ... and they're right. I deny my family nothing, and that is my greatest joy.

Jongs, our core beliefs, yours and mine, are so basically similar that I feel like I may call you my brother. We differ in many small bits of minutia, however we find common ground in the disgust in our leadership, our common loss in the sell-out that is corporate finance & profit seeking. Baltar would find this a power playground, and 9-11 his Cylon-like reason for continued conflict & quest for control.

Right there with you, bro. But we have to have faith in a Brave New World evolving. Ever changing is the future. Out of the ashes.... rebirth... eventually...

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Bergdahl disappeared on June 30, 2009. A Pentagon investigation concluded in 2010 that the evidence was "incontrovertible" that he walked away from his unit, said a former Pentagon official who has read it.

The military investigation was broader than a criminal inquiry, this official said, and it didn't formally accuse Bergdahl of desertion. In interviews as part of the probe, members of his unit portrayed him as a naive, "delusional" person who thought he could help the Afghan people by leaving his Army post, said the official, who was present for the interviews.

Disappearing from a military post in a war zone without authorization commonly results in one of two criminal charges in the Army: desertion or going absent without leave, or AWOL. Desertion is the more serious one, and usually arises in cases where an individual intends to remain away from the military or to “shirk important duty,” including a combat deployment such as Bergdahl’s.

In the early-morning hours of June 30th, according to soldiers in the unit, Bowe approached his team leader not long after he got off guard duty and asked his superior a simple question: If I were to leave the base, would it cause problems if I took my sensitive equipment?

Yes, his team leader responded – if you took your rifle and night-vision goggles, that would cause problems.

Bowe returned to his barracks, a roughly built bunker of plywood and sandbags. He gathered up water, a knife, his digital camera and his diary. Then he slipped off the outpost.

Jeeez, that's quite a reply. I don't know where it came from. But thanks for the sentiment and sincerity. As for this Brave New World you describe, I won't be around too long to live in it. My next phase is daytime naps, early bird dinners, and Skyping with my grandkids.

Fmr Soldier Who Served With Bergdahl: ‘He’s At Best a Deserter, And At Worst a Traitor’

Josh Korder: I could not go on if Bergdahl were hailed as a hero

BY: Washington Free Beacon Staff
June 2, 2014 5:06 pm

Former Army soldier Josh Korder who served with Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl shed light on the circumstances surrounding Bergdahl’s capture Monday on CNN.

Korder confirmed to host Jake Tapper Bergdahl began to express anti-American sentiments while in Afghanistan. The late Michael Hastings reported Bergdahl emailed his parents prior to his capture conveying disgust for the U.S. military and their mission in the country.

Tapper asked Korder about the soldiers who died in search of Bergdahl and if it “made him angry” Bergdahl is now free.

“In a way it really does. It’s very frustrating to me to turn on the TV and to see Bergdahl’s family on the TV being shown to everyone and then these soldiers, although they had very beautiful and extravagant ceremonies after they died, were pretty much only recognized in the local news, local newspapers. They were never nationally televised for their sacrifices in the way that he is and he pretty much voluntarily walked away and in turn caused the actions that killed them,” Korder said.

The former Army soldier added he understands Bergdahl may need time to reacclimatize after his time in captivity, but he believes “[Bergdahl] needs to be questioned and basically tried, if necessary.”

“For leaving the observation post and for deserting the unit?” Tapper asked.

“Yes,” Korder replied. “Any of us would have died for him while he was with us and then for him to just leave us like that, it was a very big betrayal.”

Korder also expressed some reservation the military may retaliate against him and other soldiers who signed a nondisclosure agreement to not discuss anything pertaining to Bergdahl and his possible desertion. However, he said he did not believe he could “continue to go on” if the public considered Bergdahl a hero and did not know the truth.

“He’s, at best, a deserter an at worst, a traitor,” Korder said.

I read many stories on this. The sense I get is that a lot of men hated where they were and what they were doing, but stayed out of loyalty to the soldiers they served with. They feel a very PERSONAL betrayal.

You're too young to remember Vietnam but it was the same dynamic. Which probably means it's a shitty pointless war. THANKS! GWB for putting us there! And THANKS! Obama for keeping us there!

Your many posts where you called bullshit on either side of the aisle. Like I said, we may disagree in the details, but the picture as a whole is painfully clear.
