Facts, rappy. If you learn to see them, you'll learn to love them.

Our standing army isn't, by any stretch of the imagination, bigger than all others combined. The PRC has 2x the active military as does the United States.

India's active military is only slightly smaller than the USA's.

In terms of people, no. But in terms of people plus materiel and weapons systems, yes.
Really, rappy? You're going to compare boots on th ground to a military with globe-spanning advanced weapons systems?

Does China or India have 10 aircraft carriers, over 4000 military aircraft, 72 submarines, 62 destroyers, about 500 continent-based ICBMs, and 800 military installations around the world?

Well... no.

But if that's what you want to argue- that all of that military spending has gotten us NO strategic or tactical advantage whatsoever.... well, just remember that the next time you say that we need more military spending!

In any case, I realize that China has designs on the rest of the world, but their plans (so far) are more along the nature of trade, not war. They have deals all over the world- Mexico for copper, Brazil and Argentina for food, oil wherever they can find it (the former Sudan, the former Libya etc), investments everywhere in Africa including Central African Republic, Egypt and Kenya (altho what they want out of Egypt besides the Suez Canal is beyond me!) etc etc. However, if there is a destabilization in their trading partner- such as Sudan, or their trade routes are interdicted, they have absolutely no military force projection. So in terms of "enforcing" their contracts... they'd have to depend on international banks and so forth to sanction various nations... like THAT'S gonna happen in China's favor!

The USA is responding to the Chinese trade threat by destabilizing China's trading partners- creating South Sudan, sending forces into CAR. The USA is also responding in-kind (supposedly) by creating trade partnership- the TPP- which excludes China.

OOC, you seem to react to several threats as if they were ALL existential: jihadism, China, Russia, and liberalism.

Which, in your opinion, is the greatest threat, and why?

O-man sez the greatest threat is a nuclear bomb in Manhattan - but wait, he already declared that the war of Terrorism was over, there were no more terrorists, so you can re-elect him in 2012. Without terrorists, who does he think will release nukes in Manhattan? The Occupy clowns? They can't even figure out how to stop pooping on each other in broad daylight.

Words mean things, Siggy.

Had you said STRONGER, then fine, that's a different story. But you merely said 'BIGGER'. And what, more than anything does it take to win a war ?

Boots on the ground.

China has far more 'boots' than does the US. Hell, they have more than the US and India combined.

What does it take to win a war?

LOTS of PEOPLE - marching!

Yes, I can see it now. All those Chinese, matching under the Pacific to attack the US! THAT'LL WORK!

Yes, I do.

I'm outraged... OUTRAGED.... that The Shrub invaded not one but TWO sovereign nations to the tune of over 100,000+ dead and a trillion dollars, the result of which is two broken nations which are hotbeds of sectarian violence, violence against women, and jihadism.

And I'm outraged... OUTRAGED... that Nobama did the same thing to Libya, was prepared to do the same thing to Syria, and that people in his administration had designs on Iran.

I'm OUTRAGED that Nobama has seen fit to use drones against anyone (including US citizens), anywhere, anytime... sliding past the authority of Congress to "declare war" by simply redefining war as "boots on the ground"... that this fucking spider sits in his White House web with his illegally-obtained information and his kill list.

And, to top it all off, I'm OUTRAGED that we saw fit to promote the overthrow of YET ANOTHER DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT (which BTW we're also trying in Venezuela) using Nazi wannabes and $5 billion.

Putin a dictator??? You jest!

The nation with the military which totals up to the rest of the world COMBINED, with designs on every single friggin' square inch of this globe is NOT Russia.

Look in the mirror, buddy. Whatever respect the President of the USA is supposedly due, they pissed away a long time ago when the decided to be World Emperor. So put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

This has been a tradition. War for profit.

Gen. Smedley Butler knew it in the early 1930s. He also exposed an attempted fascist coup against the US government. He's gone. Their kids are still there.

Really?
I was thinking that Florida's record this year against Wisconsin was 0-1. Are you conjuring UK to get WI out of Gator's way?

3 Big 10 teams went to the elite 8. Didn't see many SEC even in the whole bracket. Fla isn't playing the girl scouts this week. WI has been playing in a conference of real teams.

As an aside, did you all know Smedley Darlington Butler was the only Marine Corps officer to be awarded 2 Congressional Medals of Honor?

Now that Obama's bracket is broken, should we try a pool of which invasion Putin has scheduled next?
Will it be across Georgia to connect to Armenia?
Will it be across western Ukraine to connect Crimea to Moldova?
Will it be eastern Ukraine?
Or elsewhere?
Anybody?

Police say 42 killed in Odessa in worst violence of Ukraine crisis

Reporting from Moscow—

A clash Friday between supporters of Ukrainian unity and Russian-backed separatists in the Black Sea port of Odessa left 42 people dead and scores injured, police said.

Thirty of the victims died of smoke inhalation after a fire was set in the central trade union building, where pro-Russia separatists reportedly had taken up sniper positions to fire on pro-unity demonstrators, police said.

UN Security Council takes no action in 13th emergency meeting on Ukraine

The U.N. Security Council on Friday for the 13th time failed to take action on the growing crisis in Ukraine, with Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin demanding a "swift halt of all violence" and Western powers scoffing at his country's indignation.

Council members accused Russia of equipping and funding the pro-Russia forces that have seized government buildings in 10 eastern cities. Ukraine on Friday launched its first major offensive against the insurgency.

"Russia ... has released bands of thugs on Ukraine ... and is suddenly discovering this mixture might escape its control," French ambassador Gerard Araud said.
