The reboot of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos is here and, as Ned Twyman predicted, the anti-science crowd is furious. Unfortunately, even though it aired on FOX, Cosmos presented viewers with a scientific view of the universe and, to some, that means the end of the world.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, host of the show, continued in the tradition of walking us through the universe and presenting anti-Creation, anti-God propaganda. Can you believe he said that we are made of “star stuff” rather than invisible strands of Jesus’ love?

In all of our world’s 6,000 years there has not been a more ridiculous idea than that the world was not created in six days. All this reboot of the show accomplishes is to push the liberal, atheist viewpoint through anti-Christian propaganda!

After all, it was endorsed by Barack “Benghazi” Obama…right?

Just take a look at what these geniuses have to say about it:

Amen.

For the above people, here’s an version edited for creationists.

The intro by Obama was a bit over the top, as he's done more to limit our spending in space exploration than any other President.

That aside, I found ep 1 of NdT's Cosmos to be rather bland. He basically repeated the same script from the original series. Star Stuff, billions of years old... just with fancier CG. Not much FX goin' on back in '79 vs 2013.

And yes. These are religious zealots. If they vote, they likely do vote Republican.

However , most of their kind stayed home during the 2012 election, so there is that. But they're no less 'scary' than the moon bats who wander out into the forest to hold cry parties around the trunks of trees, as they try to commune w/ mother Earth.

Takes all types, apparently.

These tweets are from folks who are the product of group think, peer pressure and religious dogma. And like it or not, most of the humans on the planet think like this, or some similar manner.

Per the show, I knew there'd be ( and will be more ) commentary on the impact of climate change. That would fall right in line w/ Carl's message, that we humans must take care of the precious piece of real estate we have in the Earth. And I fully agree. But I think Dr. Sagan had are more immediate concern , that of mutually assured destruction from a geothermal nuclear war. Even if AGW were true, we'll have decades , if not centuries to adapt, and not all results would be negative. Same can't be said for the other.

I just finally saw the first episode of the new Cosmos.

I can see why the zealots are freaked. This show made no attempt to accommodate their fantasies, thank goodness. It was frank about what our observations of the universe say about reality. This is how it is folks. If you don't like it, if you don't like evolution and the big bang and the age of the universe and climate change (yes, that was in there!) tough rocks. Reality is what it is. You can bitch and moan, but the scoreboard at the end of the game will tell you the truth. All your feeble arguments about reality will add up to nothing.

Yes, that was a dig at our RWAs.

The episode made me realize how much of my own life may have been determined by Carl Sagan and the old Cosmos. The RWED RWAs are as stupid as ever if they don't think young minds can't comprehend such complex ideas. I have a photograph of myself at the exact age of 5 (which I'd post but it's not on this computer), me sitting on an airplane with an open book on my lap and a furious frown on my face as I pondered... I don't know. Who knows what? I don't recall, but I know for sure that I was a thinker even then. My decision to be a physicist was grounded in an early curiosity and fascination with what is "out there." Carl got me going with this, the local library and their astronomy books kept it alive. Neil will have the same effect on the new generation, with even more power because the visuals are far better and the knowledge has expanded exponentially in the past few decades.

Which is all to say: good show.

I was saddened by the Cosmos reboot. It showed the Asteroid belt as chunks if rock all easily in sight of each other, while the actual density of the belt is much less dense. The same with the Oort cloud. Wish they'd gone for real science rather than pretty pictures.

There was a bit of a disconnect in what they showed from what Neil was saying. He did bring up the fact that the 'neighbors' in the Oort cloud are further away from each other than ( Jupiter ?) is from the sun. Or something to that effect.

My dad wad an accountant. My mom a nurse. So of COURSE I gravitated toward HER books with pictures of giants and midgets and tetanus tetany and circulatory systems. That was around the age of 4 or 5. Later I read Rachel Carson.

It was all so interesting. Still is.

Ohhhh... cool...

Well, cool if the riders were all familar with the idea of mean free path... In reality, not so much. It'd likely slip right past folks.

As to other posts: The RWAs reveal their idiocy in that they are doorknob slaves to whatever was taught to them when they were 5. Hence (as they see things) all other children must be similarly stupid. Thank goodness, we're not all as dense as Rap and Jong and Zit and Geez. They'll never be able to *grok* that, but so it is.

Really wish I had that picture of young me to post. Truth be told, I was horrified when I first saw it some 20 years after it was taken. I was such a serious child! My dad only smiled and proudly told me about how I acted when I *got* it that maps model the roads in the real world and what I saw on paper corresponded to what I'd see at the next exit. He couldn't get map out of my hands after that.

All in all I'm nothing but grateful to be a person who THINKS. I don't know how it happened, I'm just glad it did. Wish it would it would happen for more people.

FWIW, I put a lot of thought into the ride - it's not a fast ride, but it has a lot of effects ...

... when you start out you start out on typical, and fairly bumpy, noisy and uneven, mini-railroad tracks

you roughly go around three (perhaps four) sharp corners with serious light and sound absorbing material

you transition to raised tracks in an open space, where the tracks are like captive air tables

around you it is very dark, very silent, very frictionless, and slightly cool

as I said, around you it is, it is dark, silent, and frictionless - except above, to the sides and below - are constellations and galaxies made of myriad small LED 'stars'

and then the ride, consisting of 3-D surround projections, begins, as does your journey as a beam of light through the solar system and beyond ...

... at least, that's how I imagined it.

Why should zealots be unhappy with the science of cosmology? Believing that God created the Cosmos makes them much happier than science. Why?

God, who created the Universe and even gave life to the Believer, has the power to smooth away problems in the Believer's life.

Even better, the Believer is not obligated to help other Believers more than a token amount because other people's problems are really God's problems.

And best of all, the World's bigger problems are exclusively for God to solve. This frees Believers to put most of their personal energy into looking after their own souls.

It is very liberating to toss all responsibilities, except for the ones your Shepherd preaches, onto God.

One Liberal reveals his idiocy when he tries to lump folks who disagree with him into a group to which they do not belong. Auraptor is an atheist, I'm an agnostic, and I don't hear Jongs and Whozit complaining about the effect of Cosmos on religion.

Yeah, Second, the "Jesus created it for us to enjoy" jumped out at me, too. Aside from the fact that JESUS didn't create it, even if you take the Bible literally...pretty sad when they can't even get their own beliefs right! Something rising in my throat...

And I will freely admit that I'm not one of the early-self-aware among us. I actually only have a few fragmentary memories of anything that young, my memories start a couple of years later, and I bought the whole package until I was older, never questioned a damned thing. I know I was INTERESTED in astronomy before 8, and one of the fragmentary memories is of dad coming home from work at night...he would grab me and swing me in the air, and I would call out the planets' names as he swung me in a circle. It's a treasured memory, one of very few. I remember a big astronomy book, and a book about dinosaurs, my two favorite subjects, but no, I never questioned anything. Of course, my parents weren't religious and didn't teach from the Bible or anything, but I wouldn't have questioned it if they had, I'm sure.

That's cool. I was totally unaware and not interested in politics or history all though my education. It wasn't until bush got in office that I realized that it DOES matter who is in charge. I started paying attention. Guess it mattered that my parents never talked politics, but my dad did talk science a lot. So I grew up with my head in the clouds, or above the clouds so to speak.

I agree; your dad was one of the special ones, Brenda. It's always been my belief that the world would be a better place if everyone had to travel when they were young--preferably to a culture as different as possible from their own. Your dad is a perfect example.

My mom is a different kind of example. She was born at the turn of the century, too, and having been an immigrant from France affected her; the result of which was that a love of language rubbed off on me, and stayed. Whatever else I may think of her, I'm grateful for that. If only they could give us more of those GOOD gifts, the world would be much different, too.

Hee, hee, hee; apologies for repeating myself, but you might have read my story about how my mom was brought here by her mother, who also brought her grandmother. Her mother, proud to be an immigrant, refused to ever speak French again, while her grandmother, who didn't want to come and never became a citizen, refused to learn English. So they made my mom translate between them for years. People can be verrrrry strange!

Oklahoma Fox Station ‘Accidentally’ Cuts Evolution From ‘Cosmos’

A Fox station in Oklahoma edited out a reference to evolution in Cosmos. While this could be seen as a simple editing error (not uncommon), the fact that it occurred during the only reference to evolution in that episode makes it a little too coincidental. According to the Los Angeles Times, the station blamed it on a “master control operator error.” However, there was no explanation as to what that actually means.

Oklahoma’s recent anti-science history.

Last year, lawmakers considered a bill that would have allowed students to argue untested, faith-based claims in their papers without it affecting their grades. That bill died, but lawmakers have has proposed another anti-science bill for this year. This one is supposed to allow different views on science in the classroom. It could also let teachers teach creationism instead of evolution in the classroom.

In 2009, the state legislature also critiqued Oklahoma University for hosting biologist Doctor Richard Dawkins. They were against his invitation because of his views on evolution. They called his speech “indoctrination” and said evolution “an unproven and unpopular theory.”

When they failed to prevent Dawkins’ speech, they started investigating the school itself. They asked for communications records between them and Dawkins prior to the speech. The state wanted to know who paid for the event, and they wanted an itemized list of all the costs involved. The truth is that Dawkins actually waived his speaking fee for the event. He instead donated $5,000 to the Oklahomans for Science Education. The university apparently treated the whole thing as an annoyance.

(Also, "Oklahoma is currently considering a law, SB 1765, that it sponsors say will help teachers encourage critical thinking in students when dealing with “scientific controversies,” including biological evolution, the chemical origins of life, global warming and human cloning. The National Center for Science Education, a watchdog group, says the bill is a backdoor way for the religious to teach creationism." http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/oklahoma-fox-station-cuts-evo

)

This just a little piece of how Christian privilege is alive and well there. The irony of course is that the big bang was first theorized by the Catholic priest Georges Lemaître. Evolution is science, not a religion, so Oklahoma needs to teach it. It’s still entirely possible that the Fox affiliate just made a bad editing error. However, given how nutty Oklahoma seems to be, it’s more likely that they intentionally blotted out the sole mention of evolution in that episode because they didn’t want to even mention evolution. http://www.addictinginfo.org/2014/03/13/oklahoma-fox-cosmos-censor-evo

You can decide for yourselves at http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/oklahoma-fox-station-cuts-evo
lution-segment-cosmos-article-1.1720481
, which posts both how Cosmos was aired there and the complete version. They cut the episode at EXACTLY the minute he starts to talk about it being "9:45 in the cosmic year"... it seems pretty clear to me.

I'm pretty sure this won't be the last time 'evolution' is mentioned or even focused on during the remaining 12 episodes of the series.

The 'edit' from the station may have nipped the first mention of human evolution, but the show then goes on to detail our journey, from 3 million to 30,000 years ago... Even if some yahoo Cletus from OK wanted to derail the show, he didn't do a very good job of it.
