Former Missouri Tigers defensive end and 2014 NFL draft entrant Michael Sam announced Sunday in interviews with ESPN and The New York Times that he is gay.

Chris Connelly of ESPN's Outside The Lines and The New York Times' John Branch were first to report the news of this landmark development:

"I understand how big this is," Sam said, per Connelly. "It's a big deal. No one has done this before. And it's kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be ... I want to be a football player in the NFL."

Sam says that his experiences at the Senior Bowl shaped his decision to make the announcement:

"I didn't realize how many people actually knew, and I was afraid that someone would tell or leak something out about me," he said. "I want to own my truth. ... No one else should tell my story but me."

He had already confided in a few close friends, Sam recalled, and had dated a fellow athlete who was not a football player -- so while coming out to his Mizzou teammates last year was a key moment, it came almost as an afterthought, during preseason training camp.

"Coaches just wanted to know a little about ourselves, our majors, where we're from, and something that no one knows about you," Sam said. "And I used that opportunity just to tell them that I was gay. And their reaction was like, 'Michael Sam finally told us.' "

Asked what that moment felt like, Sam said, "I was kind of scared, even though they already knew. Just to see their reaction was awesome. They supported me from Day One. I couldn't have better teammates. ... I'm telling you what: I wouldn't have the strength to do this today if I didn't know how much support they'd given me this past semester."

Problem with this guy is that he falls between the looked for requirements or standards which teams are interested in for a particular position on the Defense. He's a bit too small to be a Defensive End, but not quite small enough to be an Outside linebacker. He's what is referred to as a 'tweener', as his skill set and stats don't put him squarely in this or that position.

He'd probably be picked in the 4th round or so, had he not 'come out'. How he'll be picked now, or if at all, will be interesting to see.

Contrary to what is PC, most of the blacks who make up the rosters of NFL teams are NOT cool with homosexuality, or sharing a locker room w/ a gay guy. They may SAY they are, in front of a camera, but off camera, it's a different story.

It'll be interesting to see where he's picked in the draft, and by which team.

*ETA - And while not all NFL locker rooms are the same ( see Miami ), there's one thing which IS universal... none of them like it when a player gets lots of media attention thrown his way for things he's done OFF the playing field, which has zero to do w/ making the team better. Tim Tebow is a fine example. All that focus on him, when he was an average ( or less than ) NFL player, really rubbed guys the wrong way ( sorry, bad pun ) Sam says he'll not give any more interviews until after the draft.

We shall see.

He's a team leader with a lot of character. Fans aren't gonna care a jot about his personal life if he plays great in the NFL or even the CFL. Teammates who have a problem with him will get over it or be traded.

We'll see. For the NFL, he's not , by any stretch, a Jackie Robinson. He'll likely never make All-Pro, or lead the team in tackles. At least, it doesn't look like that, at this point.

Well you never really know how college players will perform in the NFL. So many #1 picks have washed out just as we've seen lots of late round picks excel. Terry Bradshaw and Tom Brady weren't on anyone's must-have list when they were drafted.

... and apparently, so is Ellen Page.

Ellen Page, who won the hearts of moviegoers as the pregnant teenager in the 2007 film "Juno," has come out as gay.

The 26-year-old told a Las Vegas audience Friday, "I'm here today because I am gay." She was speaking to a conference of counselors who work with teenagers who identify as lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual or queer.

A video of her speech was posted on the Los Angeles Times website.

Page says she suffered for years because she was afraid to come out. She told the audience, "I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain."

Page received an Oscar nomination for her performance in "Juno." She also had major roles in "X-Men: The Last Stand" in 2006 and "Inception" in 2010.

Dancing With The Stars seems to be discriminatory this year. They are forcing Michael Sam to dance with a female "partner" when clearly he should be allowed to have one of the other gay dancers.

Because he can't play football @ the nfl level. He's not good enough on talent alone, which is how players are assessed in that league.

The married or engaged heteros on DWTS are not forced to dance with their own gender as partners.
Why do they forced him to partner with the gender opposite his preference?

He can't be allowed to dance with the gender he prefers? You insist upon forcing him to pretend that his preferred partner is opposite gender? You insist upon forcing him to stay in the closet while in public, during public displays, while exercising known courting rituals (aka seduction) like dancing? Even when he has elsewhere come out of the closet, you still insist upon him hiding this fact when the greater public can view him, thus pressuring him to keep his dancing feet in the closet?
You detect no discrimination here?

You choose to force him to pretend to court a member of the gender which he has openly stated is not his preference? He has already stated his gender preference, and pretending that forcing him to engage in a courting ritual with a gender he has already stated is not his preference is prejudicial, insensitive, and discriminatory of you.

you choose to ignore that he has a voice and a preference OF DANCE PARTNER which may not conform to your agenda
