Back on topic, I found this one pretty cogent as well.

This School Is Not a Pipe

Also worth a mention, that hit piece (which I found amusing, actually) skipped over Iceland, apparently finding nothing worth savaging - I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Iceland all but strung up the banksters that hung em out to dry, and naught but positive consequence came of it, hmmm.

" We must keep the streets of our city open for the delivery of food supplies, war materials, and readily accessible for our fire department. Therefore, I am appealing to the people of this city to volunteer in assisting us to keep open the sewer basins located at every street intersection and also to keep the crosswalks in as good condition as possible for the pedestrians. And we are also appealing to volunteers, volunteers who will be willing to do a little snow shoveling right in their own block." - NYC Mayor Laguardia - 1943

" Stay indoors to the maximum extent possible. Stay out of your cars to the maximum extent possible. Don't go out. We want to make sure people are safe. We want 'em to be in a warm location -- and, crucially, we want to keep our streets clear so the good men and women of the sanitation department can ensure that our streets are plowed and salted. It's very important people get home as soon as possible tonight. Get to a safe, warm place. Stay off the streets." - NYC Mayor De Blasio, 2014

Get out, lend a hand, and help out vs Stay indoors, do nothing, and let US take care of it all.

I don't know how things work over there. But here there are services that we rely on that are run by volunteers. The CFA is the country fire authority and the SES is the State Emergency Service.

The issues we face is that we have catastrophic weather situations on a fairly regular basis, and increasing in frequency and severity. After the 2009 fires, where thousands of homes were lost and hundreds of lives were lost, the state government took a greater role in co-ordinating emergency services and their responses. So that's a good thing, its not about control or tyranny or about people not taking personal responsibility but having effective co-ordinated systems in place.

Actually, it's quite an open mind. Open to understanding the differences in cultures and national identities.

And my NYC example was to show what's changed in 60 years. Same city, same office ( mayor ) and similar situation.

Now maybe the call to shovel one's own corner didn't result with much success, and it was realized that using large vehicles specially designed to clear snow did better than a handful of locals with shovels. But even so, we have evidence of mayor in De Blasio who showed political favoritism to certain areas of town, plowing every street in areas which voted for him, while nearly ignoring the areas which voted for his opponent. How does THAT help the morale of the city ?

Lies themselves are not necessarily sincere and convincing. To be a successful politician or business manager you need to be able to tell convincing and reassuring lies right smack in the face of doubtful reality. You're not that convincing Chris; in fact, I doubt you could get anyone into a neural neutralizer rehab chair.

Naw, Chris, you blew it. You didn't blame Obama for anything!

There WAS no holocaust, but OBAMA kills Jews everyday (and eats their children for dinner)!

Nixon was not a crook, but OBAMA is a Communist, Muslim dictator!

Clinton did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky, but OBAMA is GAY!

Saddam had WMD and was a threat to America, but OBAMA didn't let us finish that war!

Obama closed down the government well, okay, you got that one).

Man is too small & puny to be able to have any lasting negative effects on Earth's environment, but OBAMA will cause the destruction of Earth with his Global Warming Religion!

See, that's how it's done...THAT kind of bullshit will get you all kinds of votes from moronic Tea Partiers.

Yep. Education is the way to go, for sure.

I'll have to ask my cousin how her Journalism degree is treating her.

She'll be folding clothes at Old Navy. I should pop in and say hi. Maybe I'll even treat myself to one or two of their awesome $5.00 T-shirts. It's been far too long since I bought any clothes that weren't from Goodwill.

Well... I did buy that 8-pack of socks and 3-pack of boxer-briefs from Kohl's last year. I draw the line at wearing socks that I didn't put holes in myself and a pair of underwear some other dude's junk has been rubbing all up on.

Anyway....

90% of kids that come out of college are straight up morons. It's probably not their fault. The education system all the way up to the top except for the very brightest and/or the very richest kids is total BS, including most college educations.

I guess if college were free though, then after the kids graduate they would just be 22 years old and completely clueless. At least they wouldn't be IN DEBT FOR LIFE. That would kinda take the sting out of working retail for near minimum wage or delivering pizzas on Friday and Saturday night after spending four whole years working ssssoooooo half-assedly-in-between-parties to obtain that worthless Liberal Arts degree.

I prefer the thirds concept. One third of them are morons. One third are competent, and one third are more than competent to exceptional.
But nothing replaces drive. Some of the dummest motherf***ers in the world make a TON of cash each year. Look at most politicians; they're mostly from the first two thirds.

SUCCESS. Also one of the most difficult things I've ever done. So many possible jokes.

An update on one of the many tangents this thread derailed on - open-mindedness is not actually as beneficial as you all seem to think it is. Most people are close-minded and distrustful about something. To be completely open to all new ideas and give everything equal credence is to be gullible.

Agree with you there, but we prolly have different ideas on what a worthwhile education would look like. IMHO, it's not a pipeline to a corporate job. It SHOULD be an education.

Zuckerberg stole his ideas from the Winklevoss twins. Zuck famously called his customers "idiots".

Steve Jobs, neither a software writer nor engineer, simply specified the "look and feel" of Apple devices. It was the role of actual inventors to bring Steve's artistic designs to fruition. Steve famously said that hard drives were a dead end.

Two ideas in this thread that may be worth pursuing in other threads

1) AMERICA- "Heart of Darkness", "Shining City on a Hill", or something in-between? (Based on our military, financial, pollution, spy-network, and media impact on the world, I would say we are the current Heart of Darkness.)

2) WHAT IS a sustainable per capita emission rate?
(Therefore, the per capita goal of 10 tons per person, as exemplified by Germany, is not a sustainable emission rate.)
KIKI, if you would open up a thread on the topic next Friday or so, when I get an extended oppty to be on FFF.net I would like to explore that with you.
