A retired Tampa police captain, angry about a man texting during movie previews, shot and killed the moviegoer and wounded the man’s wife Monday afternoon just before the showing of “Lone Survivor” at the Grove 16 theater, the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said.

Chad and Nicole Oulson of Land O’ Lakes were taken by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. Chad Oulson, 43, died, and Nicole Oulson, 33, was treated for a gunshot wound to her hand and released, authorities said.

The Oulsons were sitting in front of Reeves and his wife, and Chad Oulson was texting as they waited for the movie to begin, the sheriff’s office said. Detectives said Reeves asked Oulson several times to stop.

Reeves eventually left the theater to complain to staff. When he returned, Oulson asked if Reeves had reported him to management, the sheriff’s office said.

The two began to argue and Reeves pulled out a gun and shot Oulson in the chest, the sheriff’s office reported. Nicole Oulson put her hand in front of her husband as the shot was fired, and the same bullet struck both of them, the sheriff’s office reported.

After the shooting, Reeves put the gun, a .380-caliber handgun, in his lap. An off-duty Sumter County sheriff’s deputy who had come to see the movie secured the gun and detained him, the sheriff’s office reported.

About 25 people were in the theater where “Lone Survivor” was showing, said Melanie Snow, a spokeswoman for the Pasco sheriff’s office.

Among them was Charles Cummings, a Vietnam veteran who had come to see the movie to celebrate his 68th birthday. Cummings said he was about two seats away from where the shooting happened.

Cummings, who was at the theater with his son, Alex Cummings, said when the argument first began, Reeves left to find a manager. When Reeves returned, the argument started again, he said.

He said Chad Oulson told the shooter, “I was just texting my 3-year-old daughter.” Then the voices got louder, someone threw popcorn and one man shot the other, Cummings said.

“I can’t believe people would bring a pistol into a movie,” Charles Cummings said.

The movie hadn’t started at the time of the shooting, which happened about 1:20 p.m., but previews of coming attractions had started.

Curtis Reeves Jr., 71, was charged with second-degree homicide. http://tbo.com/pasco-county/deputies-reports-of-two-people-shot-at-wes

Don't text during the movie. Previews ? That's fine. Text DURING the movie, even to your 3 year old kid , should get a person tossed from the movie.

However, SHOOTING a person who is texting... kiss your ass goodbye from society. Nut job.

I've heard there's a special hell for people who talk (and text) during movies, but I'm not sure it's our individual duty to send them there.

This pig pretty obviously never studied any of Robert Peel's principle of policing.

Then again... *Florida*.

He is now claiming that he feared for his life - over popcorn.

And this happened during the previews. Damned movie hadn't even started.

He is, rightfully, being held without bail.

But yes, Magons: "Some people only see solutions down the barrel of a gun." Far too many, in America, unfortunately...and our culture gives them all the guns they could want with which to "see" those solutions.

It's the mentality I'm speaking of, Magons--yes, it's gone way too far for background checks to do much good, and we can't even get THEM! It's the mentality that people have the "right" to take guns anywhere they want...humans being humans, things like this are inevitable, as are the children dying daily from guns, as are all the accidental shootings I don't bother to put up but see in the news every single goddamned day.

Guns don't kill, people with guns........etc. (Background checks notwithstanding).........

Just a thought

P.S. There was a report that he (the old man) had another run in with a couple texting in the same theatre, roughly the same story, texting during previews (which many do including myself). Now once I'm done I shut down my phone for the duration because I want to enjoy the movie without interruption.

I've had people actually keep their phones on during the movie and take the call while the movie was running, not only that this woman held a conversation during the movie. If it's that important take it outside into the lobby, but I wouldn't shoot someone for it. Somehow people have got it in their heads that resolving problems with a gun is socially acceptable.
Makes you think don't it!

Pasco couple said they also had texting run-in with Curtis Reeves

The photo, a smiling Facebook picture of Reeves, came over her phone.

“It sent chills down my spine and I had to pull the car over,” Dixon said Wednesday night from her home in Wesley Chapel. “I knew who it was. It was that person I had an encounter with.''

Dixon, 33, and her husband, Michael Dixon said they were confronted by Reeves on Dec. 28 for texting during a movie, which also was at the Cobb Grove 16 Theatre. ...

Jamira Dixon texted a friend, which enraged the man, she said.

The couple said the man complained and they were approached by an usher who told them they would be kicked out of the theater if the texting continued.

“We're law-abiding citizens, my wife was like, OK, we'll put the phone away, it's fine,” Michael Dixon said. “But we noticed at the end of the aisle this guy and he's still talking to the usher and pointing at us and angrily shaking his hands and everything.”

Jamira Dixon said she was bothered by the man's behavior and was tempted to speak to the staff there but didn't.

She also said her son was sick and was shifting a lot in his seat, which also angered the man.

“As the night went on, he just glared and glared and was grumbling the whole, entire night,” Jamira Dixon said.

The man might be suffering from dementia, which could make him both irrational and irascible.

So, she was surfing the 'net or reading a text , WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING ?? Said she had to pull the car over, so I guess we're thankful for that small bit, but hell, why's she even reading her phone in the first place ? I wonder if her kid was in the car with her at the time.

Sorry, dumb asses, it's not a matter of abiding THE LAW, but showing common courtesy, as well as the rules of the movie theatre.

Oh great. On top of all that, you brought a sick child to the theatre full of people? How frelling inconsiderate can one person be ?

Well, anyone who pulls a gun to settle a minor issue like this has problems, but that doesn't excuse the total lack of civility and decency on her part either. What a selfish twat this person is her own damn self. Sheesh.

4 killed, 2 wounded in attack at Calif. Indian center
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-native-american-tribal-headquar

Four people were killed and two others critically wounded on
Thursday when a woman opened fire at a Native American tribal
office near the Oregon border in Northern California, police
said.

The suspect, a 44-year-old woman identified as Sherie Lash,
also known as Sherie Rhoades, was taken into custody at the
Cedarville Rancheria Tribal Office in Alturas, California ...

Rhoades ... allegedly used a butcher knife to attack one of
her victims after she ran out of ammunition ...

[In other coverage] Tribal members were meeting about evicting
Lash – AKA Sherie Rhoades – and her son from the Rancheria, a
federally recognized tribe with 35 members.

This remark is stupid and sexist, I know, but ... with the pre-
valence & even encouragement of gun violence in the USA
now, this is the first mass murder I've seen by a woman.
While I hope it'll be the last ... my country just seems so
weird and foreign to me now -- mass insanity. Not locally
so much, but the National news always finds plenty of
Bleeds to Lead it. ... 15 minutes of fame.

As for Alturas, Modoc county, I drove thru there once. High
desert, that place is cold and desolate like the Moon. No
urban influence.

I grew up in the 40's & 50's. Nearly all the action I saw was in the
movies. I lived in fantasyland. So ... maybe the world "became
insane" when I began to read the news. I ignored the news most
of my adult life.

Hmmm. Actually the 2 newspapers we had delivered back then
were pretty sanitized: all the news that's fit to print. I read about
Caryl Chessman and Dr. De Kaplany: One in a Million monsters.
But the common, sordid, underbelly news was elsewhere.

Is sanity really normal?

a motive, the nephew of a Northern California woman accused of

OK. She shot her relatives, but it's such a small tribe,
probably everyone is her relatives.

It's hard bein' thrown away. But it happens to a lot of
