POTISKUM, Nigeria - Islamic militants attacked a boarding school in northeast Nigeria before dawn Saturday, killing 29 students and one teacher.

Some of the pupils were burned alive in the latest school attack blamed on a radical terror group, survivors said.

Parents screamed in anguish as they tried to identify the charred and gunshot victims.

Farmer Malam Abdullahi found the bodies of two of his sons, a 10-year-old shot in the back as he apparently tried to run away, and a 12-year-old shot in the chest.

"That's it, I'm taking my other boys out of school," he told The Associated Press as he wept over the two corpses. He said he had three younger children in a nearby school.

Advertise | AdChoices"It's not safe," he said. "The gunmen are attacking schools and there is no protection for students despite all the soldiers."

Survivors at the Potiskum General Hospital and its mortuary said gunmen attacked Government Secondary School in Mamudo village, 3 miles from Potiskum town at about 3 a.m. Saturday.

The gunmen are believed to be from the Boko Haram sect whose name means "Western education is sacrilege."

They killed 29 students and an English teacher Mohammed Musa, who was shot in the chest, according to another teacher, Ibrahim Abdu.

"We were sleeping when we heard gunshots. When I woke up, someone was pointing a gun at me," said 15-year-old Musa Hassan.

He put his arm up in defense, and suffered a gunshot that blew off all four fingers on his right hand, the one he uses to write with.

He said the gunmen came armed with jerry cans of fuel that they used to torch the school's administrative block and one of the hostels.

"They burned the children alive," he said, the horror showing in his wide eyes.

He and teachers at the morgue said dozens of children from the 1,200-student school escaped into the bush but have not been seen since.

Some bodies are so charred they could not be identified, so many parents do not know if their children survived or died.

Islamic militants from Boko Haram and breakaway groups have killed more than 1,600 civilians in suicide bombings and other attacks since 2010, according to an Associated Press count.

Scores of schools have been burned down in the past year in northeast Nigeria.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency May 14, and deployed thousands of troops to halt the insurgency, acknowledging that militants had taken control of some towns and villages.

The military has claimed success in regaining control of the area — the states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe . However, the area covers some 155,000 square kilometers (60,000 square miles) or one-sixth of the sprawling country.

Soldiers say they have killed and arrested hundreds of fighters.

But the crackdown, including attacks with fighter jets and helicopter gunships on militant camps, appears to have driven the extremists into rocky mountains with caves, from which they emerge to attack schools and markets.

The militants have increasingly targeted civilians, including health workers on vaccination campaigns, teachers and government workers.

Farmers have been driven from their land by the extremists and by military roadblocks, raising the specter of a food shortage to add to the woes of a people already hampered by the military's shutdown of cell phone service and ban on using satellite telephones.

Nothing here that the Nazis and Japanese didn't do during WWII to civilians. Just another day on the big blue marble.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Nigeria is a land of immense oil wealth in which the vast majority of the population live in absolute squalor. It is emblematic of everything that can possibly go wrong from sheer corruption and total mismanagement: A high, quickly growing and deeply impoverished population. According to UNICEF:

Quote:

Nigeria is Africa’s most populous country and the 9th most populous country in the world. With an estimated population of 150 million, one in every five Africans is a Nigerian.

The country has been undergoing explosive population growth and has one of the highest growth and fertility rates in the world. By UN estimates, Nigeria will be one of the countries responsible for most of the world's total population increase by 2050.

Nigeria is home to four large ethnic groups: Fulani, Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba and there are as many as 350 languages spoken across the country.
...

Nigeria has one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Petroleum and oil resources plays a large role in the Nigerian economy. The country is the 6th largest producer of petroleum in the world; it is the 8th largest exporter and has the 10th largest proven reserves.

...

In spite of the country’s vast oil wealth, the majority of Nigerians are poor with 71 per cent of the population living on less than one dollar a day and 92 per cent on less than two dollars a day.
....

The 2007 United Nations Human Development Index ranks Nigeria 158 out of 177 countries; this is a significant decrease in its human development rank of 151 in 2004

I saw a horrific news show (VICE) on the theft of oil from oil pipelines, which is distilled in crude open cauldrons fueled by smokey crude. At night, it looked like Dante's inferno. The air is so thick with vapors that it sometimes reaches the explosive limit and flashes, burning everyone to death in a 50-foot radius.

So, Nigeria's problem is Nigeria's problem. The leadership there needs to get their collective heads out of their collective asses, and (1) give up some of that immense wealth that they're squirreling away in Switzerland, and use it to... yanno... develop their nation, and make it a land worth living in, and (2) provide for protection against rebels. They certainly have enough money to do it.

Another pathetic terrorist-loving Signy attempt to divert away from the story here. The AP story is about a group of Muslim savages burning children to death inside a school. And they do it all over the country. Muslim savages called Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sacrilege."

Just throw more $ at the problem. That'll make the savages happy!

Yes, little rappy and little jongsie either think that 1) no one else is just as brutal, or that 2) evil only matters when it's Muslims - everyone else gets a pass.

Nigerian commission reports troops killing civilians

Nigeria's National Human Rights Commission said Sunday it has credible reports security forces are killing, torturing, illegally detaining and raping civilians in a fight to halt an Islamic uprising in northeast Nigeria that has killed nearly 2,000 people since 2010.

MAGONSDAUGHTER

I think the frustrating thing on this forum can be the lack of contextual thinking by the likes of Rap and Jongs and their ilk.

For example, a couple of years ago, someone posted a 'Muslims violence erupts in China' with a 'see - another example which demonstrates that Muslims throughout the world are all crazed extemists'

not knowing of course anything about the Uighurs in China, an oppressed Muslim minority who face persecution for practising their religion. Now I'm not saying that their violent actions were justifyable, not knowing enough about their circumstances, but it would be useful if posters such as Jongs and Rap could think about the following things next time before they post.

1 Is this example of Muslim violence related to a Radical Islam desire to Isamise the world (cause this creed does exist) OR/ is it about a local/civil conflict in a country that involves Muslimes /OR is this about a lone looney who has embraced extremism to enact his violent fantasies.

2 Is it possiblle to acknowledge that while all violence is heinous, some is committed in the name of overthrowing a perceived threat or tyranny. Some examples would be rebellions/terrorism under Nazi rule, Irish response to British rule, Zionist response to British rule, ANC response to Aparteid. It is worth noting that many people who committed heinous acts of violence, often killing civilians, in the name of justice and freedom went on to become regular politicans.

What makes my brain hurt with despair to find posters cherry pick the news to find examples of Muslim violence against non Muslims. For what purpose? I don't understand. Yes, there is a constant threat from Muslim terrorists throughout the world, but are they winning on the world arena? Do more Christians/non Muslims die at the hands of Muslims than by non Muslims? DO Muslims kill more non Muslims than Muslims?

What are you trying to prove?

Oh, but don't you see, MAGONS, it's because the Muslims are part of a world-wide conspiracy. And while they are hard, we are soft and squishy and accommodating and reasonable and all those horrible things that mean that we will LOSE in the end. Because Muslims will scare everyone into following their religion, and so we must be even more ruthless than they are, and kill, kill, KILL! relentlessly so that they'll leave us alone!

It's not a conspiracy. They really DO want to take over the world. Just ask them, they'll tell you.

It's just that some muslims want to kill or convert, while most others are content with moving in, taking over politically, as we've seen happen in Europe.

The " problem " is that the violent ones get no real admonishment from the peaceful ones, and their actions go largely unchallenged.

It's tacit agreement through silence, really.

But back to your Kumbaya world, right ?

Didn't Pol Pot already take a good whack at getting rid of the wrong sort of people? And before him Josef Stalin. And before him, Hitler and his issues with Jews, Gypsies, communists, unions leaders, homosexuals, and people with mental issues ... didn't they ALL try and make the world better by getting rid of the wrong sort of people? ... Congratulations little rappy - you put yourself in their company.

Yep, an indication of rappy's "freedom loving" mentality. Just wait until it finally sinks in that many US presidents, including two of his dear and fluffy leaders (Bush and Reagan) have had long and gloried histories of deal-making with jihadists.
