Rep. Louie Gohmert says he doesn’t see the value of sex education, noting that “mankind has existed” just fine without for a long time.

On Monday, the Texas Republican was discussing indoctrination through education on a conservative radio show “Wallbuilders Live,” and decrying what he said was a liberal agenda to push homosexuality and sexuality on children too young.

“Let the kids be innocent. Let them dream. Let them play. Let them enjoy their life. You don’t have to force this sexuality stuff into their life at such a point. It was never intended to be that way. They’ll find out soon enough. Actually, mankind has existed for a pretty long time without anyone ever having to give a sex ed lesson to anybody. And now we feel like, oh gosh people are too stupid unless we force them to sit and listen to instructions. It is just incredible,” Gohmert said. “For heaven’s sake, let the kids be innocent.”

The whole attitude reminds Gohmert of the Soviet Union, he said, and he believes it’s a “natural law” that parents should have a say in their children’s education.

“That is the very thing that some of these liberals want to take away, and it reminds me so much of the summer that I was an exchange student in the Soviet Union back in the ’70s, and I was shocked when they were saying, ‘No the children don’t belong to the parents, they belong to the state. And if any parent said anything in front of their children negative about the wonderful Soviet Union, then we will take their children away and give them to somebody more deserving. And I just thought how horribly shocking that was, that of course parents were the ones who love the children, not the state,’” Gohmert said. “And I thought, well, thank God that we don’t have that in our country.” http://www.politico.com/story/2013/06/louie-gohmert-sex-education-9332

Studies have shown that having sex education before the age of 18 results in fewer cases of STDs and that the conservative obsession with abstinence has allowed those rates to creep upward. Good, solid sex-ed curricula have been shown to delay sex and reduce the frequency and number of partners. It also increases the use of condoms and contraceptives while reducing the occurrence of STDs.

But hey, what's science, anyway? Why on earth would we want to make things better, eradicate disease, stop suffering? Let 'em "find out soon enough" the hard way...otherwise, we're just a bunch of Commies...

What is he talking about "forcing this sexuality stuff on children"?

Children develop their sexuality from a very young age, long before they enter puberty. Even pre-pubescent children masturbate or have sexual fantasies. His idea of "innocent" doesn't correspond to reality, at all.

Not to mention his idea that no one ever gave a sex-ed lesson to anybody in the course of history.

Is he aware that a very large number our ancestors would have had the kids nigh-on witnessing their parents having sex because they were sleeping in the same room because they were dirt-poor peasants who shared a roof with their cows and pigs and dogs, who were also having sex in plain sight? You can bet they had explained to them what was going on, and a lot of particulars around the whole thing.

Sex ed may not have been necessary as a special class because sex was all around the children from day one. It didn't get hidden until very recently.

In the 1920's everything hated was called "Bolshevism". Now it's "Communism". In their hatred of Democrats, in their concern for the fortunes of the Republican party, they will stop at nothing.

Two: Absolutely, and it's indicative of how out of date that mentality is.

Rouka, doll, you're talking entirely too much logic and common sense for Gohmert to understand. I'm sure he'd view you as one of those "pinko" Commies who want "the state" to raise our children... ;o)

I'm deeply sad that I hear this so often when I reply to a thread. "Too much logic". It might just be my teutonic heritage, but... I like logic.

Hmm.

In my ideal world, parents telling their kids about various forms of sex, STD's, birth control, homosexuality, bisexuality, transsexuality, as well as not-okay behaviors and rape prevention would be so universal and thorough that having a special class in school wouldn't even be necessary.

So I'm all for parents raising their kids! (Does that help?)

But even then it seems like a logical and responsible aspect of biology and sociology, which should be included anyway. It's just education.

I guess I am a destroyer of families?
