One word: Frem-niption,

"Unjustly branded"? Seriously? HE wants justice? If there ever was a special hell in prison....

In the private prison industry, longer sentences earn more money from the state.

Since 2003, Ciavarella received millions of dollars in bribes for condemning minors to maximum prison sentences. In one case, Ciavarella sentenced a 10-year-old to two years in a detention facility for accidentally bottoming out his mother’s car.

According to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, over 5,000 young men and women were unjustly sentenced to prison and denied their constitutional rights. Many of them have now been released and cleared of their charges.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court has overturned some 4,000 convictions issued by him between 2003 and 2008, claiming he violated the constitutional rights of the juveniles – including the right to legal counsel and the right to intelligently enter a plea. Some of the juveniles he sentenced were as young as 10-years old.

Ciavarella was convicted of 12 counts, including racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud and tax evasion. He was also ordered to repay $1.2 million in restitution.

His “kids for cash” program has revealed that corruption is indeed within the prison system, mostly driven by the growth in private prisons seeking profits by any means necessary.

Ciavarella, known for his harsh and autocratic courtroom manner, was convicted of racketeering, money laundering, mail fraud, and tax evasion. He was ordered to pay $1.2 million in restitution.

“Unfortunately, two judges in Luzerne County have caused unimaginable taint to the laudable efforts of many dedicated individuals,” Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille said, “conduct for which those two judges presently are paying dearly,”

Ciaveralla’s attorneys requested a reasonable sentencing, arguing that the media attention brought to the case was punishment enough: “He will forever be unjustly branded as the `Kids for Cash’ judge.”

Pennsylvania judge Michael Conahan was accused as a co-conspirator, but pleaded guilty on the charge. Since 2003, he collected more than $2 million from PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care detention centers.

Some information about Ciavarella was left out of the article.

"In 1995 he ran for judge in Luzerne County on the Democratic ticket and was elected to a ten year term."

And his buddy Michael Conahan appears to be a Democrat too, although you have to work to find out...

And yes, of course Geezer is only interested in whether the offender is left or right--and if he's right wing, Geezer has no comment. But if Geez can dig and dig, and find a Democrat who's done wrong, oh, boy, here we go...!

This highlights just ONE of the negative aspects of the for-profit prison system. There are many. Law and Order SVU did an interesting episode on exactly this...their usual "ripped from the headlines" quality...

Says the person who posts "Daily dose of crazy from the Right", and every critical editorial and blog you can find.

You really can't see just how big a hypocrite you are, can you?

I post "crazy from the right" because there is so MUCH of it, on a daily basis, that it's got overwhelming. I used to pass on it, but the situation has gotten so awful I'm hoping if faced with enough of it, there HAVE to be some intelligent folk on the right who just might wake up, or maybe any unaffiliated or independents will think twice about giving them more power.

And no, when someone posts something, I don't go hunting around to see whether the miscreant is a Republican or a Democrat; bad is bad, whoever does it, and it gives me no great satisfaction if they turn out to be from the "other side". You, Rap, Jong? Not so much.

I already made my comments about this judge elsewhere. But this judge isn't the only one doing this. It is infuriatingly prevalent here in Utah, where we have a far greater percentage of the horrible juvie hell camps than everywhere else. And these judges here are right wing. All the way up to our state DoJ encouraging parents to send their kids in for minor misdemeanors, and creepy religious elements from a church that's basically also the state government, while the detention/rehabilitation centers defraud everyone for massive profits.

Tip of the ice berg, folks. This for-profit private juvie prison business feeds the adult prison population, the military, and even child pornography rings. This kids for cash judge scandal in Pennsylvania ties in with the Sandusky scandal in Pennsylvania, it's all connected. You're about to see a rabbit hole of some scarily cult-like beliefs in the abuse and even rape of children to break their will in the service of the state and business and all those patriotic wholesome American values.

Would that work on YOU if someone tried that with what the right wing thinks of as constant left insanity?

Or would it feel like you had someone with a megaphone wrapped around your shoulders screaming in your ears? Confronted with the the frustrating and ubiquitous viewpoints of the right wing pundits, feeling like you're drowning in them, do you think feel their tactics work?

Insanity is subjective. Everything the left does the right wing thinks of as insane, and everything the right says and does the left thinks is insane. Posting regular examples heavily biased left or right every day will convince no one, will wake up no one, people will cling only harder and more defensively to their existing belief set. This creates only more antagonism on the board.

The left and right are the same as always, just both louder and more intrusive with social media. Neither side bears much need for worry.
