What the hell just happened? Bombing the Boston marathon? What is wrong with the world?

Too early to begin speculating on who did it, but you know it'll happen anyway.

Sickening. Not only for the act itself, which is cowardly and abhorrent, but for the reaction which will likely strike out in all the wrong directions.

I wish I could stop the world and get off for a few days. There needs to be a break room where we could get away from stuff like this.

Now I am learning about scary.

If you find a way to stop it for a while, Mal4Prez, let me know because I'd like to get away from it, too.

I don't understand. Boston? Marathon runners from all over the world?

WHY???

I understand being pissed at authority figures, and at governments, I really do. But how in the hell does one justify destroying the lives of some regular schmoes out to watch a marathon? I will never understand how any human being talks him or herself into doing something like this.

I know it happened nearly 7 hours ago, but i only heard about it because I was talking to one of my grandmother's on the phone. Had I not, I might not have even heard about it until Thursday night when I work next....

THIS is the EXTREME example of why I'm glad I don't have any form of "TV" except for the shows or movies I choose to download or watch......

Had I not exhibited any "human behavior" today and spoke with a relative, I wouldn't even know this horrible thing had occurred.

I don't look at it as "burying my head in the sand". I look at is as not giving idiots "water cooler" moments.

Seriously..... WTF???? CAPITAL "W", TO THE "T" TO THE "FUCK"........!!!!!!!!

We could sit here and ponder why somebody would do this forever.... Obviously there's no "MO" for it. Whoever did it wanted to let ANYONE know that ANYBODY can be killed at any second for no reason. I'm sure the next bombing like this will be at the end of a Cancer or MS relay.

I don't believe for a second it was a Middle Easterner..... although I'm sure that will come out....

Sorry to point it out to you, but for those who have been paying attention at least as little as I have, this is slowly but surly becoming a war of Good against Evil stateside....

For those of you who believe fully in your Gumment to do the right thing... I applaud your nievity...

For the rest of us.....

MATTHEWS: Let me ask you about domestic terrorism as a category. Normally, domestic terrorists, people tend to be on the far right, well that’s not a good category, just extremists, let’s call them that. Do they advertise after they do something like this? Do they try to get credit as a group or do they just hate America so much or its politics or its government that they just want to do the damage, they don't care if they get public credit, if you will?

Was Obama's pal, Bill Ayers, part of the " far right " ?

And I'm glad Kwickie can begin to make jokes about this. Never too soon for some, I suppose.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"... the FBI likely was issuing subpoenas for records from cell towers in the area to isolate and trace calls from around Copley Square at the time of the blast ..."

I had a thought - assuming of course that they really did recover an unexploded device (two elsewhere) - perhaps they were telephone activated. It was too long to walk from one to the other to set them off so close in time. And it may have been too complicated to get them to go off using timers in so well coordinated a way. Perhaps after the first two, so many people got on their cell phones that the bomber either couldn't get a dial tone or got the 'trunk line busy' fast-busy signal, and so couldn't trigger the third bomb.

Not very Buddhist of you, Chrissy.

All I did was state a fact. You'd not call Chris Matthews "Dick" for blurting out a likely suspect, but you'll do so for me, merely because I pointed out what HE said ?

Does that seem right to you ?

Also, everyone seem so hung up on the cell phone theory. Why is that ? Do bombs not also work on timer devices ? This idea that it HAD to be cell phone activated, has that been disclosed yet ? Or , like so many other stories, is this merely being tossed out there, and repeated like holy dogma, ala " it was because of a YouTube video " ?

Really annoyed at so many false stories we're getting, by folks who want to be FIRst , instead of accurate.

Hearing " as blankity blank news is reporting " seems to be the most important thing in such stories.

Indeed.

Quote:

Should we even be surprised that after an event like the bombing of the Boston Marathon today, immediate suspicion would turn to Muslims? Muslims themselves were not. “The thought of every Muslim right now,” tweeted Dubai-based Al-Aan TV journalist Jenan Moussa: “Please don’t be a ‘Muslim.’”

It’s easiest to explain unexplainable — or yet unknown — things by forcing them into an existing worldview, so when a shred of evidence came along, such as an unsubstantiated New York Post report that police had detained a Saudi national, many on the right immediately took it and ran with it.

Of course, the Post’s report — which Fox News picked up — has zero named sources, zero quotes, and was contradicted by the Boston commissioner, who said authorities have no suspects in custody yet, but why let that get in the way of what you’re sure is true.

As if to anticipate such a meme spreading, every major Muslim group in America sent out press releases condemning the attacks and offering their sympathy, something no other racial or religious group is expected to do after such events (though many do). “American Muslims, like Americans of all backgrounds, condemn in the strongest possible terms today’s cowardly bomb attack on participants and spectators of the Boston Marathon,” CAIR executive director Nihad Awad said in a statement.

But that didn’t stop the speculation, and not just from people like Pamela Geller or Fox News regular Erik Rush. Or Bryan Fischer, who said on Twitter, “NBC: suspect a student who was here on a student visa. Anybody want to rethink Muslim immigration?” These people have made careers peddling inflammatory rhetoric. If Pam Geller didn’t immediately blame Muslims, it might be a good idea to send someone over to make sure she’s feeling OK.

My REPLY

And it's a REPLY to EVERYONE.....

Two income homes and the other 55% without dads at all in the picture is to blame stateside....

Keep letting your kids be raised by day care or nannies who let them watch TV all day.

Anyone who did this today probably isn't half as pissed off as I am today. I'm also pretty f'ing unstable, but I still have close relations with my family. Close enough that if I were ever to be used as a scapegoat for a travesty like this there would be far to many people to back up that I wasn't even if I didn't have a solid alibi.

There's no MO on their side....

If you know me, I just want to live comfortably and watch you all tear each other apart for fun.

I've warned people. I've told people about this stuff.... nobody listens.

Don't worry...
Gumment will step it up a notch.

Next year, it will cost 125 bucks to watch a Cubs game on the Bleachers.

It will cost 19.25 for a 16oz Budwiser and you'll be cut off at the 3rd inning.

In other words, Wrigley Field will look as barren as Comisky Park in 2014!

In the mean time, you bra burners are the ones to blame....

Not the good women who got a good man and had good children and want to raise them right.

You forced Lesbians because no man would have you. You uglier than sin women who got college educations and became leaders of PACs.

There is not one single GOD DAMMNED THING WRONG with being a stay at home mom and raising kids right. You're just salty because you're so ugly no man would have you.

It's because of YOU today that people look down at Stay at Home Moms.

Between my step-brother and my half brother and their combined FREE college education, books and room and board, they "made" over 1/2 a million dollars in education.

Imagine my surprise when I had to pay nearly 5k out of pocket for an associates degree that never happened.... on more than one occasion.

Fuck you...

Fuck "PC"

My youngest brother is going to graduate next year, and is going for his Doctorate.

He's only 20 years old and will be teaching kids younger than him.

As awesome as my Dad was as the "cornerstone", it would have never happened if my step-mom wasn't there 24/7 to take care of my bros.

That house was alwasys god dammend springtime fresh. The best and most nutricious meals I've ever ate.

I'm not salty. I know I'm smart enough to be an "Overlord" voiced by they guy who says "Smither's" on the Simpsons....

Trust me... If I had my bro wrapped up in 5k a month benefits and making out with a Kardashian asshole every month, this would move from the RWED to some post-Billy Maze infomercial.....

Moi?

I don't see a stampede. AT PRESENT I don't see the government trying to steer us into one. I would be personally extremely suspicious if it looked like it was headed in that direction. Like I was w/ Afghanistan and especially Iraq, like I was with the USPATRIOT Act (supported almost entirely by our right-wing contingent), etc.

I just wonder who is acting as 'sheeple' since I don't see anyone being herded in a particular direction.

Am I the only one who noticed this is Tax Day, and Boston? If there was an anti-tax nut who didn't mind killing a few fellow 'muricans to make a point, al la Tim mcVeigh, seems the day and the venue would pretty much fit the bill.

OTOH, maybe it's North Korea's clever plan to get us fight each other... not that we need much encouragement in that direction.

Or maybe it's Iraqis, Pakistanis, or Afghanis. After all, thanks to us they've been living with terrorist bombings for the past 10 years or so. Seems they have every right to be aggrieved. Giving us a taste of our own medicine, perhaps?

Or maybe it's the gubmint, like PN said. One more excuse to take away even MORE freedoms. Yet another justification to detain, imprison, torture and kill citizens w/o trial. Not that it would bother rappy.

I can think of a lot of plausible enemies.

Yeah, Tax Day and Boston were my first thought as well. And the fact that the Boston Marathon is an international event, so there's a fear of globalization somewhere in the subtext, just as there was on 9/11. Regardless of who's "responsible," these things always happen for the same reason.

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Really? Other people thought of that besides me? I hadn't heard. As for my claiming it HAD to be cell phone activated, perhaps I can point this out: I had a thought - assuming of course that they really did recover an unexploded device (two elsewhere) - perhaps they were telephone activated.

The news is full throttle in promoting this idea, that it HAD to be cell phone activated, and the working theory is that cell traffic prevented other devices from going off. I don't know. Possible, but it sounds too scripted for me to buy into it, that so many different news outlets are running with exactly the same speculation, w/ out anything official to go on.

Again I ask: Why do you think I was joking? Do you find the NRA's stance on guns laughable? This is exactly the logic they used in the aftermath of Newtown. Do you think they're a joke?

Recently we used explosives to take down a building in my city...nobody was hurt. That wasn't terrorism either...it was "redevelopment". Similar acts undertaken for different reasons changes the nature of the act.

Have you ever witnesses a tragic act of war or terrorism and said to yourself, "the American-Nazi-Jew government is innocent of this act"?

Surely you can name one incident in say...the last 100 years that was a legitimate act of war or terror and not part of some plot or inside job.

I noticed that. While always possible, it is unlikely to be a right wing tax-resister or left-wing anarchist.

Your initial idea of the timing has merit, but the nature of the attack is what is most telling here. It is highly unlikely (but not impossible) that an anti-tax or anti-govt person would use a bomb to attack a large crowd like this. They are far more likely to target govt buildings or officials. This type of bombing fits more into the methods and targets chosen by Islamic terrorists.

While this is not conclusive, it is a consideration. I think it would be a mistake to rule out anything until the evidence starts to be processed.

I note for the record that the Olympic Park bombing was undertaken as an act of terror and had two objectives.

1. To punish the US for its ongoing support for international socialism and abortion.

2. "The plan was to force the cancellation of the Games, or at least create a state of insecurity to empty the streets around the venues and thereby eat into the vast amounts of money invested."

The bomber was a right wing domestic terrorist.

Just wanted to once again point out that this was indeed an act of terrorism. Any time anyone threatens, injures, or kills citizens to affect the survivors* it is an act of terrorism, whether the terrorists are jihadists, zionists, environmentalists, anti-taxists, gang-bangers, soldiers, police, or secret service. So, is this something we can ALL agree on and stick with, no matter WHO the perpetrator(s) are? No going back, and changing the goalposts afterwards if we find out that the perpetrator was [gasp!] one of our own, however we define that to be?

*The reason why I define terrorism this was is to exclude one-on-one acts of violence. Also to exclude acts against property.

HERO- I think the timing and venue of the bombing was more than coincidental. If you simply want to injure large numbers of people, any sports event or holiday which brings people together in large numbers- New Year's Eve, for example- would be as effective. Either this is an anti-tax person or someone who really wants to muddy the waters. But what point is there to an act of terrorism if you mask your objective? The whole point of terrorism is to make people DO SOMETHING en masse, to drive them in a direction. If the objective isn't clear, all you have is a mob of people mentally milling around- yanno, like a stampede in an enclosed space.

So, what has the bomber accomplished? Personally-satisfying revenge? More subservience to Homeland Security? Fear of marathons? Fear of large crowds?

The longer nobody claims credit, the more puzzling it becomes. It becomes difficult to infer an objective, and therefore a perpetrator. One possible winner in this whole scenario is Homeland Security. After 911, everyone was ready to bend over and grab their ankles in the name of security. Rappy was willing to torture anyone who might be an enemy. We invaded nations for no reason whatsoever. We set up secret prisons everywhere, and funded this giant agency called Homeland Security (what an Orwellian name!) which is busy collecting every bit of information on everyone everyhwere. Let's not make that mistake again, and surrender what few rights we have remaining in the name of safety, invade some far-distant random nation, and throw even more money at the "security" agencies, OK?

Your inability to grasp the point doesn't mean it wasn't there. But then, there's very little you don't get wrong.

Now, back to the actual issue - there were no unexploded devices, it was confirmed today. The ATF did explode one package - just to be sure, but there was no device inside. The two detonated bombs are all they can confirm at this stage.

Bombing the Boston Marathon is an attack on very large scale sporting event that offers a unique oportunities and advantages for radical Islamic terrorists.

1. The event has a signifigant amount of international attention, especially in the Third World which is usually very effectively represented. It is also the premiere running event in the world. Others may be larger, but you'd be hard pressed to find one with more prestige.

2. It's venue is one of America's best known major cities. New York, LA, Chicago, and Washington are certainly top tier, but Boston is also a front runner for rounding out the top five and is certainly in the top ten.

3. It offers an extremely large number of people both as active participants, staff, and observers. These people are highly concentrated in confined city streets.

4. The venue is spread over a twenty-six mile stretch making comprehensive protection of the entire event nearly impossible.

I said a couple weeks back that the real danger we face is not Al Queda engaging in complicated plots to attack New York or LA, it's when they realize they dont have to attack New York or LA. At the time I wrote a series of possible targets which I deleted before posting because the possibilty was too frightening to put into words. I did not predict the Boston attack, but my targets included select low security sporting events located in cities other then New York, Washington, LA, or Chicago. The events I suggested included high school or college basketball games, graduation cerimonies, local political events, etc. I noted that the key ingrediants combine a large number of people in a confined area with little or no security to detect, deter, or prevent terrorist attacks.

HERO- Well, I added more to my post.

And I see you're already assigning blame.

You have made a number of good points as to why ANYONE might target the Boston Marathon. It's a good target, but that would make it attractive for ANYONE seeking to terrorize people. It might even be an anti-immigration reform terrorist, since the proposal was going before the Senate that day.

Right now, you're jumping well ahead of information. You may be right, but you may also be wrong. We know where you stand. Don't start prosecuting before the evidence. Let it be.

AN ADDITIONAL THOUGHT- While the bombing is similar to the IEDs elsewhere, there were many ways it could have been made more lethal (not going to say how). Whoever did this is an amateur, and probably working alone since this is within the scope of one person.

Also, the blast looked to be black powder. Any thoughts?
