America loves a winner!

but their impact is huge.

...those who study mass shootings say they are not becoming more common.

"There is no pattern, there is no increase," says criminologist James Allen Fox of Boston's Northeastern University, who has been studying the subject since the 1980s, spurred by a rash of mass shootings in post offices.

The random mass shootings that get the most media attention are the rarest, Fox says. Most people who die of bullet wounds knew the identity of their killer.

From a 2007 article after the VA Tech shootings:

Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox blames guns, at least in part. He notes that seven of the eight deadliest mass public shootings have occurred in the past 25 years.

“I know that there were high-powered guns before,” he said. “But this weaponry is just so much more pervasive than it was.”

Mass Murders Are On The Rise

There are many types of murder including single death, serial and mass. Single death homicides are, as the name implies, a one time event. Serial murder is one victim at a time repeated over and over, with a separation between the murders, described as separate occasions with a cooling-off period in between.

The FBI defines mass murder as “Four or more murders occurring during the same incident, with no distinctive time period between the murders. These events typically involve a single location, where the killer murdered a number of victims in an ongoing incident." The Colorado shooting by James Holmes was a classic mass murder.

According to the 2010 FBI crime data, since 1980, single victim killings have dropped by more than 40 percent. While that's very good news, there's a new sobering trend: Mass murders are on the rise. This New York Times article researched the frequency of mass murders. It found during the 20th century there were about one to two mass murders per decade until 1980. Then for no apparent reason they spiked, with nine during the 1980s and 11 in the 1990s. Since the year 2000 there have been at least 26, including the massacre in Aurora, Colorado.

I'm not sure how Fox looks at it, but it seems to me that, while there are a few years with only one, it has gone up since 1999...and this year alone we've had seven, which is the highest number.

I think it's all in how you look at it...the idea that there were the most mass murders in 1929 doesn't fit, for me; that was prohibition and a lot of murders took place, mass and otherwise, and doesn't speak to whether a single individual just opened up on a group of people for no apparent reason or for some personal reason. I imagine most of those were gangster deaths, which puts into question for me how he arrived at his figures. He doesn't say anything, from what I read of the article, about a single gunman or two gunmen just opening up on strangers. JMHO.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

I'd love to see stats for each of these mass killings, as to what type of weapons were used. For instance, was a knife used in any of these incidents? I'm told that knives are just as dangerous and deadly as guns.

Were flintlocks and muzzle-loaders used? Revolvers or bolt-action rifles?

Oh well, if all weapons are equal in their killing value, should be some major cuts ahead for the military. Just arm them with rocks. Should be useful next time they see combat action in Afghanistan.

I look forward to hearing about it the next time someone gets into a school and strangles 27 people with his bare hands. I'm sure the news will be all over it.

A gun is just a tool, I'm told, just like a knife or a hammer. I've been assured that a knife can also be used to kill people. A knife can, of course, also be used to cut food to feed it to another person, or to, in some cases, operate on someone and save their life. I've yet to see a gun used in such ways.

"A gun is a tool." A tool for what?!

A hydrogen bomb is just a tool. It doesn't mean what you think. Every Muslim country should probably have several hundred, just to protect themselves from carjackers, thugs, thieves, and other countries like us.

Oh well, if all weapons are equal in their killing value, should be some major cuts ahead for the military. Just arm them with rocks. Should be useful next time they see combat action in Afghanistan.

Or I should be allowed to fly with my bombs, since they're no more dangerous than guns, swords, or knives.

Right, Rappy?

I think it's worth noting that a guy in China flipped out on a school last week, too. Twenty-three people were stabbed and injured. Injured is the really operative word, here. No one was killed.

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

Exactly. They were injured, not killed. I can't be sure, but I've heard that if you had to choose, stabbed and alive tends to gain a bit of favor over shot and killed as a life status.

Yeah, not likely that'll happen too often, if ever.

The number of instances doesn't seem to be increasing, people kill each other all the time after all, but the number who get killed in each event seems to increase, I blame this in part on the fact that the more people you off the more attention is given you on the news, fame in other words, you can really "make your mark" in the world, its just like two year olds, they don't care whether the attention is positive or negative, as long as they get attention.

Bingo. And I've heard discussions about people feeling powerless in society, and one of the ways to stand out and feel powerful is to off a lot of people. Fame and power, all in one fell swoop.

I have appreciated that I'm not hearing the shooter's name bandied about as much as I recall in previous similar situations. I hear them referring to him as "the shooter" more...I think I may have missed this movement, as I hear "Columbine" and "the Gabby Gifords' shooting" and "Ft. Hood" more than I hear the name of the actual killer. I hope that continues and becomes moreso; the less fame we give these people, it might have at least some impact on the "romance" of fame...one never knows.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.
