And really - Niki saying she wishes that the conservatives here were smarter isn't even remotely in the same fucking ballpark as Wulf saying he wants her to die. That's a ridiculous equivocation.

Dying is a form of leaving. The dying one is harsher to say, but in my mind, on the internet, saying I wish someone would leave/die are similar statements. It's the loss of a contributing voice.

I really don't want anyone to leave, but I don't want people here who post ridiculousness over and over. When was the last time Wolf posted anything of substance? PN's threads could easily turn someone off from visiting this site. Imagine a new Browncoat who happens to be Jewish looking in on RWED after one of PN posting blitzes.

I give you credit you don't want anyone to leave. I think Wulf talking about his daughter has been a positive contribution, and I think as she grows it will continue to be a source of insight into Wulf and his life. As for PN, while I don't always like what he says, I think he needs a place to let loose. We have had jewish folk join in the past - one of them actually became good friends with PN.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Playing catchup...didn't realize this silly thing ws still going!
Quote:

Niki, most righties don't converse, it's not in their mental mind-set, generally speaking. Expecting a righty to listen, think, and respond is like expecting a dog to set a table. Not trying to be harsh here, but the studies are pretty conclusive: most right wingers have authoritarian mindsets which preclude asking questions, considering wide sets of facts, and using logic to come to independent answers. Everything is divided into "my side" and "your side", and fear plays heavily into the response. Reality doesn't factor in.

Jonggstraw IS an exception. I can only hope that, as lefties, we are as thoughtful as Jongsie.

I don't think what you say is true of all right wingers, or conservatives, OR Republicans, or even most of them. I think those you describe may well be the LOUDEST, certainly, but in my opinion, it's more a case of most people not being that aware or educated, politically, and not having the interest. Being more atuned to their own day-to-day lives, in other words. It's as easy to convince the uninformed as it is for them to just go with the flow, and that's true on both sides equally, I believe. I do agree, however, that what you say is accurate for most of the "righties" HERE, sadly.

Byte, sorry but I have to cry "bias".
Quote:

Consider what was done to you, consider that the peer pressure here, while not as vitriolic as what was done to you, could result in a similar situation for people on the right. They are people and they are browncoats.
I've never been anyplace that I've seen liberals/democrats/etc. act the way I saw those at the other forum act, nor have I seen the equivalent vitriol directed at the "righties" here as I have seen directed at those on the left. I'm responsible for my OWN actions and nobody else's, and I've never been as vicious to any partisan here as they've been to me. As long as that's the case, I have nothing to "consider".

Did someone actually say they "wish our right wingers would be replaced by smarter ones"? Mark seems to think you meant I said it! I'm skimming today so may have missed that...personally, I just wish people like Geezer, Rap, Wulf, etc., were WILLING to be civil, just to try it out, say, for a while. They might even find they liked it. Of course, once again, caveat: If there was any chance in hell they'd have the opportunity to find out they liked it, it would require the OTHER SIDE to behave like grownups (myself included). I don't particularly care how "smart" someone is (and there are many different kinds of "smart"), I just wish we could CONVERSE.

I'm with Nick...and beyond:
Quote:

Which is a major reason I want to drive people to have intelligent discussions. I want people to stumble to this site to be impressed with the way we Browncoats act.
My "beyond" is my own personal "pseudo-shame" in seeing liberals/lefties/whatever sink to the same LEVEL here as what I abhor coming from the right. That's a good half of why I keep crying for civility. If WE could just rise above, ignore the idiocy (okay, maybe counter idiocy with fact, lies with truth...ONCE), and have civil converse, it would take a GIGANTIC cut out of the volume of ugliness. Just that. Sigh...

Woa.
Quote:

Dying is a form of leaving. The dying one is harsher to say, but in my mind, on the internet, saying I wish someone would leave/die are similar statements.
Oh my gawd!! Are you serious?!? That one just fucking leaves my jaw on the ground. The mere concept that you find someone on the internet typing "I wish you'd go away" to be the EQUIVALENT of someone writing "I wish you would die". I'm speechless. I can't touch that one.

I'm outta here. Time to find some Castle reruns and regain perspective.

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

As amusing as this is, in a "lord of the flies" kind of way, it has become necessary to point out that if you guys chase away the only conservatives remaining on the board, you'll have no one left to argue with except among yourselves. Also, that hemorrhaging posters is a good way to dissolve the community entirely.

In that respect I feel like I should try to explain both positions in this argument so that there's actually a baseline to argue from.

AURaptor, Nick's not a child molester. Also, the reason Nick and Kwicko are accusing you of "advocated government kidnaping and torturing people based on nothing more than suspicion" is because at one point you supported the PATRIOT Act, which is basically what some of us see that as. You are free to disagree that is what the PATRIOT Act is.

However. Nick, Kwicko: AURaptor has never in my hearing posted anything in support of mandatory ultrasounds, shaming rape victims, or even anything about banning abortions. What AuRaptor did post once was a rather questionable defense of Rush Limbaugh calling a young woman a whore, because she was advocating on behalf of a friend who had a condition that needed to be regulated by hormones commonly found in birth control pills, and that they were asking for insurance coverage for this.

I don't know where the forced sterilization of poor women thing might be coming from. Perhaps something from before my time here.

Although, AURaptor, sometimes some of your responses on abortion threads, while never actually saying that you would ban abortions, you talk about how you understand why religious types might want to. Not a very strong condemnation.

There. NOW I think we can have a discussion about this.

Here is Rappy, in his own words, advocating forced sterilization:

Quote:

Here's a novel idea. Take care of your own.

Can't do that? Then they no longer will be YOURS. We make sure the ones who are here, the children who didn't ask to be put in this position, are taken from you, and put where they can grow and learn and eventually do for themselves, and the mother ? In a word... 'fixed'. No more 'presents from god', you've been 'blessed' enough.

"In a word... 'fixed'."

Any questions?

Here's the thread he posted that in.

And in response to this,

Quote:

Women seeking an abortion in North Carolina will have to wait 24 hours, receive counseling and be presented with an ultrasound image of the fetus under an informed consent law passed on Thursday over the governor's objections.

Democratic Governor Beverly Perdue had vetoed the measure. But the state Senate voted on Thursday to override the veto, two days after the House of Representatives took similar action, which means the bill is now law and will take effect in October.

North Carolina joins 25 other states that require pre-abortion counseling that goes beyond basic medical "informed consent," according to Elizabeth Nash, public policy associate with Guttmacher Institute in Washington.

It is the tenth state to include the additional requirement of an ultrasound, which has drawn legal challenges in several states, Nash said.

The issue was on the mother in FL, who was having so many kids, and can't take care of them.

My position is that it's child abuse to allow her to keep those kids, and for her to keep HAVING kids, she can't take care of. Refuses to take care of.

Also, you LIED, claiming that I " advocated " forced probes. I never did. Not once.

What "facts" did I "distort"?

What words of yours did I "twist"?

You very much advocated taking a poor woman's children away from her and having her "in a word, 'fixed'."

And in the post about North Carolina passing a law forcing ultrasounds on pregnant women seeking abortions, you cheered the passage of that law. "AWESOME", you called it.

Did I and others misunderstand your position?

Did you not mean the things you wrote?

Are you retracting those statements, or admitting you were wrong to say those things?

If so, please do. Admit you were wrong, apologize for your positions, and move on.

Also, please show me where I "LIED" as you put it. You said you never advocated forced ultrasound, and I posted your own words showing where you were cheering exactly that. How is that "lying", exactly?

By the way, how often do you say "I win. You lose." ? How often do you call others "losers"?

You claim we're trying to "win" an argument, but isn't that a term that YOU use more than anyone else here?

The fixed thing is pretty clear, though it's nothing that others haven't said in the heat of the moment. I mean, sometimes members of this board have suggested that other members be sterilized or not have children. It's not the nicest thing to say and also something I would never say, but it is also not indicative of a greater philosophy on the part of the person saying it. Not anymore than a thread where people hoped PN was forced to go to prison and be subjected to the attentions of the inmates means that the people who were in favour hate free speech and are pro-rape.

The ultrasound example is less clear. I've been trying to find out if the ultrasounds in question are the probes or if they are external ultrasounds, but from the language of the posted article AuRaptor responded to, I am unsure. (EDIT: This is what I get for having a bad memory. I apparently already chased this information down and determined that the language of the law is deliberately obfuscated in regards to heartbeats but means a vaginal ultrasound)

It is possible that AURaptor did not realize they were vaginal ultrasounds based on the article.

In context it's also possible AURaptor is being sarcastic. (EDIT: Ah, no. He later says "LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." So he actually does believe this stuff, but doesn't own it all the time. I'd been wondering why he gets so dodgy about it)

Here's what Rappy said in his own defense:

"I never supported those things, and it's funny for you to claim you remember such , as it never happened."

Note that he specifically does not say "If I ever said such things, it was in the heat of the moment and I was wrong," or "If I posted such statements, clearly I was being sarcastic in doing so."

No, what he says now is that he has NEVER supported such things, and it NEVER happened.

Clearly he did, and clearly he said so.

Or maybe you just came to this site for the first time yesterday.

But we know none of these things is true.

Your inexplicable defense of rappy might hold some water if he, when confronted by his own words, responded in a mature way, rather than denying them, or attacking people for posting them - but that's not what happened, so your defense comes off as laughably tone-deaf.

Just look at your own post, Byte. Notice how it's filled with words and phrases like "I think", "usually", "I don't remember", "intended", and the like.

Now look at what Rappy says. He's big on "NEVER", ALWAYS, and any manner of absolutes. For him, it's a black and white world, no room for "maybe", no wiggle room.

Again, he isn't claiming that he never intended his words this way or that, or that he may have been posting in anger in the heat of the moment; no, he's posting now that he NEVER said such things or held such positions, and by making such claims, he's dead wrong, as I've shown.

Look, everyone needs someone to defend them now and then. If AURaptor doesn't step up soon, then I have to be the one to do it.

Frankly, I don't buy into either side's efforts to demonize each other. You all have different ideas about things, but for goodness sakes, you're all decent people. :/

I don't AGREE with AURaptor because he likes the Patriot Act and because he's a pro-lifer, among other reasons, but it doesn't mean I think he's an inhuman heil hitler jackboot monster like all of you make him out to be. Just like people who are pro-choice aren't inhuman baby killing nyphomaniacs who put fetuses on their dinner salad.

Come on guys. You're all just a bunch of mostly Americans with some Brits and Australians who happen to support one party or another in a ridiculous farce of a political arena. You all have different points of view on wedge issues that I'm not even sure MATTER because regardless which side you support, both are authoritarian and nothing changes and ultimately you have no say in anything your leadership does. In short you're NORMAL PEOPLE and par for the course as it comes with citizens of our respective countries.

Of course all of you are going to slip up and say something now and then that you took a little far, or you're going to get frustrated and drop some swears. But to spend every moment of the day dragging up each other's pasts when none of us probably remember any of the crap we might've said yesterday isn't going to accomplish anything.

I'm defending AURaptor because I think he quite honestly believes he doesn't support "mandatory rape of women trying to get abortions" in a strictly technical sense, and while I don't agree with him, I understand what his reasoning is and the mindframe that reasoning evolved from. Similarly I also get you guys. What I DON'T get is where the disconnect is that neither of you can see where the other side is coming from and what their reasoning is. If we could figure that out, we might be able to have discussions again.

Just like people who are pro-choice aren't inhuman baby killing monsters who put fetuses on their dinner salad.

Perhaps the disconnect is that we don't see that nothing changes, or that we do not have a say. I know I don't believe those things. So while you see these arguments as "tomatoe" vs "tomäto" arguments we do not.

Plus I think everyone would be more than willing try and understand the other sides position if they were interested in understanding theirs. Why should I care what Rappy really thinks when he believes I want the government to take over everything and control people cradle to grave?

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.
A warning to everyone, AURaptor is a known liar.

Why shouldn't you?

I spend most of my time thinking all of you without qualification hate my guts, or at least think I'm majorly obnoxious. I take things personally, I get prickly, if I'm poked enough I start to say shit even *I* know is crazy, like "Niki is an operative for the democratic party" or "AURaptor is a plant for the military industrial complex." You could go back and drag all that up and throw it in my face while I'm standing here saying I think all of you are decent people.

Doesn't change that you are. Or that you could have a point I hadn't considered about some things even when I'm bristling and snarling at you like you just caused the nuclear apocalypse.

So I listen and I try to understand. And when I see normal people fighting, tooth and nail, life and death over and it's baffling to me, I get that what you're fighting about is important to you on both sides, but I don't understand why it's got to be that way.

You back someone into a corner, they're going to act just like AURaptor has been acting. Then you hold it against him for acting that way.

He says he doesn't support mandatory rape or sterilizing impoverished women or unqualified torture. I take him at face value. Even if in the past he has said things that seem to contradict that, I tell myself maybe there's an extenuating circumstance here why AURaptor feels that this situation doesn't fall into that category, or something he doesn't know, or maybe he thinks something is an exception rather than the rule. What I do know for certain is you're not going to prove someone wrong about what they think that they think. And you're not going to get them to explain the apparent discrepancies in their stance on an issue by making them even more defensive.

Byte, sorry but I have to cry "bias".

Okay, how am I biased? Have I ever identified right wing? Do I agree with AURaptor on any of the points brought up in the thread?

You guys aren't as vicious as the right on the attack. But you still attack, and you do it a lot. And in the end, if someone ends up leaving because of an attack, the relative strengths of the attacks no longer matter. Only the outcome, that someone left.

I just wish people like Geezer, Rap, Wulf, etc., were WILLING to be civil, just to try it out, say, for a while.

They did. It didn't take. I'm not sure which side aggressed again first, only that the situation is as bad as it ever was.

If someone DOES leave then it has the same end result. It's advocating silencing a voice. Not to mention my own personal views on the equivalence of dying and leaving which are probably not relevant.

The difference between you and Rappy is that if you go off you realize it and apologize or come back and clarify your statements. You don't pretend that you never said something in the first place.

Rappy states he never said things he did. I know we can't prove what each other think. That means all we have are the words we type. Rappy tries very hard to walk the line between defending people on the right yet not outwardly agreeing with some of their positions. It seems he can't go against a member of the GOP even when he most likely disagrees with that person.

How many discussion have you and I gotten into? I don’t think I have ever thrown something you said back into your face like we do with Rappy. There is a reason for it. You try to understand others positions, and are willing to explain yours in more than one way.

Rappy makes some half-ass point and then calls people “useful idiot” or some other name if they don’t immediately agree with him. Hell, I could do a better job arguing the Right's point of view than he can.

Logic fail.

It's not an occasional, or once-in-a-while thing, it's a systematic and constant facet of his discussion here, and therefore fair game to be addressed in such a manner.

And his response makes me wanna send him a waffle iron.
