( actually, there IS a 3rd believable option, that the publisher herself lied, to make Obama look more 'sexy'. I put that above her making such a glaring mistake. Surely Trump has definitely questioned the LEGALITY of Obama's presidency. If, by your own constitution, the president MUST be an American national, if he is questioning his birth certificate, what else would he be questioning, OTHER than the legality of the presidency??? I'm confused as to your semantics Rappy??/

With the grace of age, commander, we learn to accept.

Yes she could have lied, but that would not help you attack the president would it? Funny how you seem to have that moment of clearity after stating, "If 'born in Kenya' is implausible and flat out absurd, then that doesn't leave much else. Obama knew."

It is like the small sane part of your brain took control for a moment there.

Wow. Rappy will really go to the mat for anyone who's looking to attack Obama. Sure, it makes no sense, and leads to everyone (even, in this case, other conservatives) laughing at him like he's a bufoon - but he's dedicated to his silly little crusade, Ill give him that.

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

Would that make it all right in your book? Would that make it just fine if Romney got the same "pass" as Geithner? Would you have zero problem with Geithner if that were the case?

Quote:

Oh, wait... I think we'd have heard something bout all that.

Not from the right-wing media, you wouldn't, apparently. Others of us DID hear about it, quite a bit.

Quote:

Residency issues have plagued Mitt Romney in the past. When he campaigned for governor of Massachusetts in 2002, he ran into trouble because he had switched his residency to Utah three years earlier when he moved to Park City to take over the struggling Salt Lake Olympic operation. The move technically made him ineligible to run for office in Massachusetts, which requires seven years of continuous state residency before a candidate is eligible to run. After a lot of legal wrangling and paying back taxes, he was finally allowed on the ballot.

Quote:

How Romney had filed his Massachusetts income taxes — as a resident or non-resident — during his years in Utah could have had some bearing on the issue. Since he had also been contemplating a run for office in Utah, some suspected he might have filed as resident there to establish more permanent roots in the Beehive State.

Romney initially refused to make a copy of his Massachusetts tax returns public, even a copy with the income information redacted. Suspicions only grew more intense after the Globe’s Frank Phillips reported that Romney had paid property taxes on his Park City, Utah, home as his primary residence for 1999, 2000, and 2001. Campaign aide Eric Fehrnstrom said that had happened because of a “clerical mistake” by the relevant county assessor’s office in Utah, an account that office pretty much backed up, though no one could say quite how the unusual error had occurred.

At the time of the property tax brouhaha, Romney told reporters he had filed his state income taxes “both as a resident of Utah and a resident of Massachusetts.” Pressed by Phillips, Fehrnstrom also insisted Romney had filed as a Massachusetts resident, adding that “you are just going to have to take my word for it.”

http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2012/07/12/the-tale-mitt-past-tax-r
eturns/YXYBWSuP08kqj8IFKeg4cM/story.html

Of course, it was later revealed that the Romneys had, in fact, claimed their home in Utah as their residence, both to lower their Utah property tax burden and to avoid the Massachusetts income tax.

Quote:

Cites ?

See above. Need more?

Had you honestly never heard anything about any of this, even when it came up multiple times on this very board?

Quote:

I guess you're blindly buying into the STORY that Obama had no clue that his publisher made a " mistake " on his Kenyan birth. It was the publisher, 100%, all by herself, not doing her job, not doing what it is that publishers routinely do for a living, that is fact check their client's bio.

So are you "blindly buying into the STORY" that a clerk in the Utah tax assessor's office made a "mistake" in checking the box on the Romney's tax forms that said they claimed Utah as their primary residence, even though there was no evidence that any clerk in that office had ever made such a mistake in the past or since? They made that "mistake", doing what it is that tax clerks do for a living, which is checking over the tax forms that people send in?

Quote:

Obama lied. Period, end of story.

You've never shown any evidence to support that claim. You can say that there is a book-jacket mini-bio that is in error, but you haven't shown any proof that Obama wrote it, or that he ever even saw it before it was published. And according to you and Geezer, if he didn't know about it, he couldn't possibly have been lying.

Quote:

Dunning-Kruger effect. You wear it well. I mean, how could ANYONE with any brains at all not believe YOUR bullshit ?? They'd have to be stupid, is the only explanation, that you can fathom.

Is that what you meant when referring to others who disagreed with you as "liars" and "morons"? Would you say that you were suffering from the D-K effect?

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I agree, Mark. Totally ridiculous arguments. For one thing:
Quote:

It's because there's no reason for Romney to do this, as there's no HINT of impropriety anywhere with him, unlike with Obama.

Of course there is, and legitimate impropriety that SHOULD cause questions about his taxes:
Quote:

1. It’s well known that Romney has deposited a lot of his money in banks in Switzerland, the Bahamas and the Cayman Islands. However most people don’t remember that in 2009 the Internal Revenue Service announced that those who illegally hid money in offshore accounts would not be prosecuted for tax evasion if they would come forward to settle up.

Given his refusal to disclose his taxes is it unreasonable to suspect that they would reveal that he took advantage of this amnesty to avoid prosecution?

His personal assurances that there’s nothing for the public to be concerned about are worthless. If these concerns have no merit it would be trivially easy for him to dispel them once and for all ... release the records. http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20121024/OPINION02/310240011/Romn
ey-has-lots-hide-tax-returns?odyssey=mod%7Cnewswell%7Ctext%7COpinion%7Cp

2. THE BOSTON GLOBE (June 7, 2002): Republican gubernatorial hopeful Mitt Romney contradicted his previous public statements yesterday, and said for the first time that he did not file Massachusetts income tax returns for 1999 and 2000 as a resident of this state.
Quote:

in 2002, when he was running for governor of Massachusetts, Romney was equally adamant that he would not release his tax returns. A key issue then was Romney’s eligibility to serve as governor. Massachusetts law requires that in order to serve as governor, candidates must have resided in the state for the previous seven consecutive years. Because Romney had lived in Utah full time while he ran the 2002 winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, it seemed obvious he did not meet that requirement.

One way to tell for sure would be to see which state, Massachusetts or Utah, Romney listed as his primary residence on his IRS forms. Romney and his adviser, Eric “Etch-A-Sketch” Fernhstrom vehemently denied that Romney had filed as a full-time resident of Utah. It was later revealed they were lying — Romney had amended his returns to change his claim of full-time residency in Utah to full-time residency in Massachusetts — retroactively. http://www.pensitoreview.com/2012/08/08/romney-hid-his-returns-in-2002
-mass-governors-race-too
/

3. Romney deliberately didn't claim deductions on last years' tax returns which would have put his tax rate at less than 14%, which he has claimed over and over he never paid less than. That he would do so merely for political reasons should make anyone question his motivation on other matters where he has contradicted himself directly, purely for political reasons.

So there's not just a "hint" of impropriety, there is ACTUAL impropriety when it comes to his 2002 tax returns, impropriety where he ADMITTED he lied.

It's well known by now that there must be SOME valid reason Romney won't show his returns. The broo-ha-ha over it is such that the cost of NOT releasing them would be far higher than releasing them, unless he'd done something wrong, illegal, or so unpleasant that he fears it would cost him the election.

Which will have absolutely NO effect on Rap continuing to insist otherwise, or pay any attention to the facts.

The woman in question also DOES work for a publishing company, not for Obama, so that is yet another "misspeak", if you will. To say it's not been "SHOWN" that the mistake was hers and not a deliberate lie by Obama is disingenuous, because it can't be proven. She has stated it was her fault; unless it can be proven otherwise, we have to take her word for it.

Quote:

This is a sorry excuse for political propagandism. This is the ravings of an eccenric lunatic who is losing the plot.

I'm sorry, but anybody who believes that your own president has foregone legal and due process to stand for election, is way too obsessed with conspiracy theory for your own good.

As usual, PK nails it. There WAS actual question whether Romney could run for Governor of Mass BECAUSE OF HIS TAX RETURNS. That's about as much of a "smoking gun" as is possible, so there is precedent for it being open to inquiry as to what his tax returns might show about their legality before he can run for President.
Quote:

Huh? He 'lived' on his taxes ? Please, do elaborate on that.

Wow, Rap is sure twisting in the wind on this thread! He couldn't grasp the sentence "Romney flat-out LIED about where he lived on his taxes" to somehow Romney lying about living on his taxes (how, I can't imagine.
He's having some trouble with figuring out who pays who, too: "that the publisher, working for which ever company, gets paid by Obama". Apparently he doesn't grasp that they published Obama's BOOK, ergo their money comes from sale of the book, not from Obama; neither one pays the otherHe spends most of the thread claiming OBAMA personally lied on his bio, then claims it was the editor doing it to make him look "sexier" (?Sexier to be born in Kenya?). I think our Rap needs a break to gather his thoughts...

Really, this whole thing is a tempest in a teapot, and spending ANY time trying to deal with it is silly. Trump IS dumb, obviously--he made a fool of himself by boasting he'd do something dramatic at the convention, then wasn't even allowed to speak; he pre-announced this "huge" dare of his, only to have it be laughed at by virtually everyone (except Rap, of course) as just another piece of idiotic self-aggrandizement. If he weren't stupid, he would do things that bought him more than a day of being ridiculed by everyone. Everyone knows perfectly well that Obama would be equally stupid to take him up on it, as it wouldn't SOLVE anything. Birthers still believe what they do despite the birth certificate; showing his college transcripts would only give idjits like Trump the excuse to claim they were faked and demand even MORE. Even acknowledging Trump would be ridiculous and only give him the attention he's so desperately seeking.

Trump is only worth ... ... and the way he's going on, Rap's not much better.

Trump apparently didn't even name a charity he would donate to. He mentioned AIDs research though, so I looked and found a group with a good rating.

This makes me wish the Donald could feel shame. But he can't. Instead, I will wish futilely that the internet can focus my disgust and resentment so hard that maybe he'll trip on a $20,000 rug in one of his gaudy tasteless offices.

I will also see if I can tie this into the donation drive going on at work this month, maybe they can double my contribution.

That's because the challenge is for OBAMA to name the charity, as it's HIS choice, not Trump's. His mention of AIDS, Cancer, or helping inner city children of Chicago were merely examples. I bet , if Obama named several, to split up the donations, Trump would comply.

I know it sad that a person that has accomplished so much and dedicated his life to serving his community and country is not nearly as wealthy as a man who simply uses money to make money.

I do not fear God, I fear the ignorance of man.

(fixed)

Honestly I doubt Trump is as wealthy as reported, he probably cooks his books. I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually flat broke.

I'm fairly sure that Trump is more wealthy than the Obamas.

Does that make him a better person? Is someone's real worth measured only by their monetary worth?

We went over this before, Mike.

The differing state tax laws of Utah and Mass. were to blame for this.

If Romney lived more than half the year in Utah, as he did when saving the Olympic Games, he was required by state law to file a resident tax return. If he maintained a residence in Mass., regardless of how much time he lived there, he could file a Mass resident tax return. It appears that when PriceWaterhouse did his returns, they chose to file as resident in Utah and non-resident in Mass. but under Mass. law, he could have filed either resident or non-resident. When he amended his Mass. returns to resident, he did nothing wrong.

This was all explained in the ruling of the Mass. Ballot Law Commission ruling about his eligibility to run for governor.

It appears that, just like politicians who continue to run commercials that have been proven by fact-checkers to be bogus, you won't let go of a good sound bite just because it's a lie.

Not provable. He's filed CORPORATE bankruptcy numerous times, but that has nothing to do with his personal wealth.

Of course, given he's inflated his actual worth several times in the past, who knows?
Quote:

On-again, off-again presidential candidate Donald Trump releases what he claims to be truthful and accurate financial information in his new book, Time to Get Tough. It’s scheduled to be in bookstores Dec. 5.

In the book, the host of NBC’s The Apprentice – who has financial interests in Palm Beach County with Mar-a-Lago and Trump International Golf Club, but also in Broward and Miami-Dade counties — claims to be worth $7 billion, give or take a couple mill.

That’s much more than previous estimates, which placed him in the $250 million to $3 billion range. He is No. 128 on the latest Forbes 400, with a fortune estimated at $2.9 billion.More at http://www.forbes.com/sites/joselambiet/2011/11/22/donald-trump-claims
-hes-worth-7-billion

If he can lie by that big a number (I know "billion" doesn't mean what it did, but if he more than DOUBLED his net worth??), he can say anything he wants and nobody can prove it except his accountants, so anyone can equally make their own estimates. Interesting that he sued that guy for "libel" (how is it libelous to say someone is less rich than they claim, and did he have to provide facts to prove it was wrong? In which case...).

There is also the (perhaps more important, given according to law, what he did was legal) fact that he LIED about it, then ADMITTED he lied:
Quote:

Once it was finally pointed out that Romney had filed as a Utah resident, and had even told a reporter in Utah that he had done this for tax reasons, Romney punted responsibility for it: The reporter was lying, a Utah tax clerk had made a mistake, and he hadn’t read his taxes before signing them, he now claimed. At the same time, Romney noted he’d been trying to fix the error.

“He was trying to retroactively, essentially refile his taxes, so his Massachusetts taxes would be filed as if he was a resident of the state."More at http://www.kulturekritic.com/2012/08/news/liar-liar-while-running-for-
gov-romney-lied-about-tax-returns-while-simultaneously-trying-to-get-them-amended/

So if it was all legal, why would Romney note he'd been trying to "fix" the "error"? Romney lied about his taxes, one way or another. So there IS reason to question his veracity (if we ever believed he had any in the first place, considering his constant twisting with the wind).

Right on, Byte:

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

America loves a winner!

One who has more $ than another is proof of one having more $ than another. I don't think it makes one a better person, either way. Larry Flint likely has more $ than Mother Teresa had ( I'm only guessing here ) , but does that make him 'better' ?

Not in my book it don't.
