I'm expecting this first debate to be won by Obama. The harsh reality for me is that Romney has big trouble thinking on his feet, as he's not very glib. He's also not a great campaigner, and I see no way he can defeat Obama. He and everyone else in Repub. presidential politics still haven't figured out how to combat the loyal Obama press. They don't seem to grasp the first rule of war....know the difference between a friend and a foe.

Romney won the debate in a big way, bit it doesn't really matter at all in the end. I remember when Kerry beat incumbent Bush in their first debate because Bush looked tired, un-prepared, and annoyed to have to even be there. So it was with Obama tonite, but bet he'll be better in the next two debates. All would be swell for me and my fellow Conservatives had this been in another decade of time. But as the country is now we may win parts of Congress once in a while, but the Presidency is something that is gone forever for Republicans.

As to the debates tonight:

The bar for Romney's performance was set so low that as long as he didn't show up with his pants on backwards and his shoes on his head, it could be counted a "win." On that level, he won, despite dodging any answers of substance and looking as though he'd been popping Ritalin all day.

On the level of anything resembling substance, Obama won on points -- but he did look tired, which the sort of voters who confuse Federal elections with "Dancing With the Stars" might let sway them.

I found it rather amusing when Obama asked why Mitt wasn't giving any details about what he'd replace Obamacare with -- "Is it too wonderful? Is the secret just too wonderful to share?" Priceless.

I came away with the impression that Romney's answer to everything is "Let the states handle it", along with "I have a plan that will work because it's a plan that will work, never mind the details, just trust me." He came across to me as a used-car salesman who'd had one too many cups of espresso that morning . . .

To sum up, Romney didn't shoot himself in the foot tonight, which on the "lowered expectations scale" probably counts as at least a tie. He'll need to do better in the next two if he expects to get off the corner of 47th & Bain, though.

Mitt Romney finally shook the etch-a-sketch tonight and moved to the center. The problem with the move is it's inconsistent with things he's committed himself to previously. Obama wasn't crisp at pointing this out -- going for the capillaries, not Romney's jugular vein.

It's interesting that conservatives who think they don't want Mitt to pivot to the center are clearly elated when he did it and it worked. Romney repeatedly noted that he agreed with Obama on various issues and repeatedly took rhetorically moderate positions. For example: "Regulation is essential. You can’t have a free market work if you don’t have regulation." You sure wouldn't have heard him say that during one of the primary debates.

Romney succeeded in portraying himself as someone who's considerably less conservative than the Mitt Romney who we've seen a lot of over the past 18 months. Whichever Romney shows up in the White House in 2013 if he wins in November, the guy we saw tonight is a much more appealing figure than the guy who was on the trail all summer.

Technically the soda thing changed. The church elders came out just this year and finally said that the line long interpreted as a condemnation of caffeine in general really just applied to hot coffee.

Even the leftist media can't spin this one hard enough. Even Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow can barely choke out the words to call it a draw. (HAH!) Some draw. The best grade I've seen for Obama is from ABC, 42% think he won the debates (Gosh, that's awfully close to the 47% figure, isn't it?) They must have only been polling blue koolaid drinkers and STILL couldn't pull out a tie!

Obama got Mittslapped. Watch the debate again and notice how red his ears get. He really doesn't like having to go without his teleprompter. He had more talking time than Romney and squandered it on Uhs and Ums before segueing into a story about his grandmother.

As Dennis Miller said, "Obama got owned, refinanced and owned again."

Next we have Captain Math going up against Captain Kangaroo. I can't wait to see the comedy when Smilin' Joe Biden gets away from his handlers. I expect Ryan to vigorously apply the crowbar of truth and logic to Biden's head.

I'll give it to him - Romney owned that stage last night. He was totally on his game, while Obama seemed like he he wished he were anywhere but there.

If I hadn't already heard Romney change positions regularly on everything, Id be impressed, possibly even in his camp. But alas, I know he was doing what he always does, and saying what people want to hear, so he hardly swayed me any.

I also don't think Ive ever seen a less effective moderator.

We shall see if this has any lasting impact on the campaign. Things have tightened nationally, but electorally - Obama still has a pretty strong lead. And he will very likely go into the next debate with a bit more passion and clarity.

Two, from what I hear you pretty much nailed it. I don't generally watch debates--or speeches--because they're choreographed to make each person sound and look like what the people want them to. The dissections afterward and clips that I see are sufficient for me.

Most of what I'm hearing is that Romney lied like a fishwife and Obama didn't call him on it: that as you said, Romney swung amazingly to the center and either avoided or lied about the stances he's taken right up to a couple of days ago. The Woos in Chief apparently didn't go at him at all, so it's a win for Romney. This thing about being so careful not to look like an "angry black guy" has got to be tough to get around, but I wish he'd grow a spine.

Unlike FauxNews and their ilk, the "left-wing media" has been quite clear that Romney won and Obama did a hack job...I'd love to see things reversed and hear the spin from FauxNews, who would NEVER admit Obama won anything even if Romney DID show up with his pants on backwards. At least the lefties can honestly call a loss a loss.

I hope the public isn't as dumb as they often are and see through the performance, because from what I'm hearing (both from left-wing pundits AND centrists), that's precisely what it was--an enormous pretend shift to the middle, much of which directly contradicts the stances he's taken all along.

I've also heard a few people talk about how Lehrer did a pretty poor job...many saying this wasn't "his kind of format". Such is life.

It's a shame Wulf is back; I keep forgetting that he makes Rap look like an actual, semi-intelligent human being, Wulf is so out there and over the top. Such is life.

We'll see what happens next time--I sincerely hope the Woos in Chief grows some balls in the meantime. I don't have much hope for the VP debates, I fully expect Ryan to win--especially if he fakes pivoting to the center like Romney did. There will no doubt be the inevitable Biden gaffe(s), and Ryan always looks like he's had too much caffeine or something, which will no doubt make him appear as a young go-getter. Aside from that WEIRD look on his face (I've tried to immitate it, best I can figure it's a tight-lipped grimace...), he's young, he's good looking, and I expect he'll wipe the floor with Biden. We'll see.

I just wish the public had been paying attention all along instead of just tuning in for the debates, and that they'd start using their BRAINS instead of being swayed by a "good" debate performance.

Time will tell.

Mitt Romney turned in a polished performance in last night's presidential debate – and revealed himself to be an accomplished and unapologetic liar. In an evening where he sought to slice and dice the president with statistics, Romney baldly misrepresented his own policy prescriptions, made up numbers to fit his attacks and buried clear contrasts with the president under a heaping pile of horseshit.

Here are mendacious Mitt's five most outrageous statements:

1. "I don't have a $5 trillion tax cut." Romney flatly lied about the cost of his proposal to cut income-tax rates across the board by another 20 percent (undercutting even the low rates of the Bush tax cuts). Independent economists at the Tax Policy Center have shown that the price tag for those cuts is $360 billion in the first year, a cost that extrapolates to $5 trillion over a decade.

2. "I will not reduce the taxes paid by high-income Americans." Romney has claimed that he will pay for his tax cuts by closing a variety of loopholes and deductions. The factual problem? Romney hasn't named a single loophole he's willing to close; worse, there's no way to offset $5 trillion in tax cuts even if you get rid of the entire universe of deductions for the wealthy that Romney has not put off the table (like the carried interest loophole or the 15 percent capital gains rate.) The Tax Policy Center report concludes that Romney's proposal would create a "net tax cut for high-income tax payers and a net tax increase for lower- and or middle-income taxpayers." Moreover, some of Romney's tax cuts are micro-targeted at American dynasties, particularly his proposal to eliminate the estate tax, which would reduce his own sons' tax burden by tens of millions of dollars.

3. "We've got 23 million people out of work or [who have] stopped looking for work in this country." Romney is lying for effect. The nation's crisis of joblessness is bad, but not 23 million bad. The official figure is 12.5 million unemployed. An additional 2.6 million Americans have stopped looking for jobs. How does Romney gin up his eye-popping 23 million figure? He counts more than 8 million wage earners who hold part-time jobs as also being "out of work."

4. Obamacare "puts in place an unelected board that's going to tell people ultimately what kind of treatments they can have." Romney is reviving Sarah Palin's old death panels lie here. Obamacare does establish an Independent Payment Advisory Board to help constrain the growth of Medicare spending. The body has no authority to dictate the practices of the private insurance marketplace. And the law also makes explicit that this body is banned from rationing care or limiting medical benefits to seniors.

5. "Pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan." In the biggest whopper of the night, Romney suggested that his health care proposal would guarantee coverage to Americans with pre-existing conditions. This is just not true. Under Romney, if you have a pre-existing condition and have been unable to obtain insurance coverage or if you have had to drop coverage for more than 90 days because you lost your job or couldn't afford the premiums, you would be shit out of luck. Insurance companies could continue to discriminate and deny you coverage, as even Romney's top adviser conceded after the debate was over.

Yup, Nick, you pretty much covered the "biggies" Romney spouted. But in fairness, Obama gave out a few of his own "fibs"--which the supposed left-wing media was happy to dissect--too. Only FauxNews didn't give a full fact check, and "fact checked" only one item on their website...slathering the rest of the front page with anti-Obama "articles".

What Nick quoted is pretty much the short version of the most outrageous lies Romney told, so if you don't care or don't want to take the time to read the MUCH longer version from a number of websites that I put up, that covers Romney. Just bear in mind that Obama did some fact twisting, as well.

I'm still wondering why the wonderfully "fair and balanced" FauxNews didn't do a fact check of their own. I guess they couldn't take the comparison between Obama's omissions/twisting and Romney's out-and-out LIES. Interesting.

Let's let the demented right-wing nutcases enjoy their "conquest" while they can and as loudly as they can; reality will probably hit home before too long. After all, it's only a month to election day; unless Romney comes up with something beyond a fabricated win, their delirious joy will be short lived.

ETA: I believe Romney's lie about pre-existing coverage is because his plan says specifically that it will“Prevent discrimination against individuals with pre-existing conditions who maintain continuous coverage.”

Why would I do that? Hell, in case you didn't notice (I saw rhetorically, because you rarely follow along with threads), I was the first one to come here and congradulate hiom on his performance last night.

This was expected. Every incumbent but Clinton has lost the first debate for at least the last 35 years. Obama still has a sizable lead, electorally. This will, at best, give Romney a tiny bump in the national polls, that's about it.

Meanwhile, you're the one supporting the guy who can't seem to stick to a single stance on anything, and has just put in what is already becoming known as the least honest debate appearance ever.

Your guy managed to not fuck up for once. Enjoy your celebration, fine. But it doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot in the long run.

This is true. It's the many blatant falsehoods that make him a liar. There are plenty of fact-checkers out there who have torn Mittens a new one.
