I note for the record that in today's polls Obama has 47%.

Hey there guys,

Let me take a crack at it.

In his "speech" Romney does eventually say that he's going after those undecided, undeclared independent voters that make up about 5-6% of the country (his numbers). On that we are clear. Now, had he left it there - no problem. But he gets Foot-in-mouth disease and says what he says about the 47% of Americans - you know, those pesky freeloaders who don't pay taxes, who by the way, a great many are from the Greatest Generation - those folks who both he and his father owe their cushy lives to - the folks who fought the greatest menace, The Nazis. Those are part of the 47%.

Also too, families who actually work for a living, but who rightfully and lawfully pay no taxes because of the way the Tax code is written. A fellow once told me that we should pay our fair share in taxes, but that we should take advantage of every allowable tax break/credit. So, a family of five making $50K a year would pay no tax, if they take advantage of all the tax breaks, etc. Sorry Mitt, these guys have jobs - whoooops!!! you just insulted hard working Americans (both Dems and Repubs) that are NOT holding out their hands to the Government. There goes that theory. Say bye-bye to those votes. Then there's the elderly, who don't pay income tax on there social security checks. Bye-bye!!!

Here's a man who has millions, no hundreds of millions in several off-shore accounts and he's crying - boo hoo, I can't catch a break, if only my skin were brown, boo hoo! Believe me Mitt, we don't want you. You're a sorry excuse of a human being. What a racist! To be clear, he's saying that latinos get all the breaks in this country - REALLY!!! News to me. But what's really happening is that this country is becoming more of a melting pot every day, and he's scared shitless. He doesn't have a clue how to conduct himself humanwise. He even insulted his own wife - what a douche! And this is the best you got!? McCain at least served his country. All Romney does is milk people, and this country, dry.

Wait a sec! Isn't he running his campaign on the premise that government is too darn big, freeloaders, entitled to handouts, etc. Doesn't that fly in the face of his criticism of Obama and Dems spending too much and adding to the national debt? Hmmmmmm..........it makes you think, don't it? Could someone explain to me what has changed between now and 2006 when he championed Health Reform in his state? I think he's trying to say that voters would really flock to him as a presidential candidate if he looked more latino, or if he were Hispanic. Because, you know, if there's one thing you need to know about this country, it's that there's no way we'd ever elect 43 wealthy white guys to the top office. What I love about this whole thing is the unstated assumption by Romney -- and of the Right Wing blogger who pulled the quoted "47 Percent" figure more or less out of his ass in the first place -- that "Does not owe Federal tax" is the same as "Is a welfare queen." That "Earns too little to owe Income Tax" or "Belongs to an exempted group" (such as any member of our armed forces serving in a combat zone), is semantically identical to "Parasite on Real Americans".

My son, a good family man, who used to work in construction until the economy tanked, recently managed to get a job working for a local charity after some years on various forms of relief -- it's hard, low-paying work, and it's damned hard to make ends meet. Harder than it was when he was on the dole. But he's still slogging out there, every week. And I'm damned proud of him.

And if Mr. Romney wants to imply that my son is less of an American than his $50,000-a-plate buddies, he knows what he can kiss, and when.

Yup, heard that one too, and more. They're leaking it a bit at a time, and I'm having a BALL listening. I bet candidates from here on will be VERY careful what they say, and/or screen EVERYONE who comes in for any item that could possibly take a video!

I'm with whoever guessed it was a worker who recorded it. Placement (not among the audience, but on a table behind them), and what some of the idjits Romney was talking to said/asked, pretty much clinches it. None of THEM would be caught dead recording his remarks, or theirs.

One thing that's slipped by is that working people generally pay 13% in payroll taxes--LESS THAN ROMNEY PAID, at least in the tax returns he's willing to let us see. Just amusing, nothing more. As is the fact that a video of his mother has been released saying George Sr. was on welfare after he "immigrated" back to the U.S. I guess that makes Romney one of "us", eh?

I'm certainly offended that my having paid into SSI and Medicare all my working life and now getting it (well, some of it--my husband still works (at 74) so we can keep our private health insurance, so Medicare only pays what's left over after that).

I see, in their desperation, the Romney campaign has now released a video of Obama saying he's in favor of redistribution. Go, guys, your actions only scream to the world how desperate you are!

Me, I'm just smiling at the fact that Obama leads in all but one of the swing states currently. Certainly anything can still happen, no question about that. But I pay NO attention whatsoever to polls on the whole country--they are totally meaningless as long as we have the electoral college. It's the swing states who decide the election (

), so those are the only ones I pay attention to. And they ain't lookin' good for the guy...

No surprise there, Mike. Bear in mind that their "first priority" has been to defeat Obama all along; to hell with what might be good for the country or help our first responders or our military or anyone ELSE, their "job" is to defeat EVERYTHING.

Another thing that's been missed in all this is Romney's mentality: If I don't do something for you, you won't support me". He seems to have no concept whatsoever that people might vote for him even if he doesn't "offer" tax breaks (which he's actually only offering the rich). He apparently believes that the ONLY thing that will decide people to vote for him is if he GIVES them something. It's a perfect example of a BUSINESSMAN's mentality, and probably works quite well in business. But as President?

I'm actually surprised the pundits haven't picked up on that, it's so obvious. His thinking is: The government gives them something for nothing, they don't pay taxes, so my offering a tax break means, since they don't PAY taxes, it won't get them to vote for me. Wow. Just a little reality check: I don't expect every politician to be as utterly two-faced as Mitt Romney. The sheer audacity of his classist, racist, callous-as-all-get-out rant here is not something I expect we would soon see from any other candidate even without this coming to light. Y'know, and yeah, the motherfucker ASKED that the full video be released! Dubya wasn't nearly as smart as this prick and we heard closed-door speeches from him and they weren't anywhere near this calibre of twisted and wrong. You don't have to be all that careful if you're not an absolute pathological liar like ol' Mitt.

Some of us have well known from the get that Mitt Romney is a whole new level of corrupt. And on the most personal level. What's great is now everyone can hear it for themselves from the horse's mouth. This guy's political career is over.

"This guy's political career is over." Gawd, I hope you're right, Cav, but given that there are many who are DEFENDING him, as well as telling him to run with it, I'll hold my hopes close to my vest for now.

But yes, you're absolutely right, come to think of it. While candidates may say undipolmatic things in private and to raise funds, I don't think we'd find QUITE such the openly-disgusting things from most of them if their private conversations were revealed. About some Republicans recently, I wouldn't be so sure, tho'...their hatred is pretty solidified.

Not only Romney, but his attendees showed a level of mind-numbing idiocy that's hard to swallow. Daily Kos and others had some fun comments to make:

Hmmm, I seem to remember John Mitchell, the first ever extremely corrupt Attorney General convicted of a crime, then Nixon's 2nd AG was convicted of a crime and both were Republicans... Holder, on the other hand, has never been convicted of anything.

In his reply, Mr. Romney said: “I wish we weren’t unionized so we could go a lot deeper than you’re actually allowed to go.” He did not take issue with the characterization of Mr. Holder.

Romney: "I have been on The View twice now! But The View is high risk because only one of the 5 women on the show are conservative."

Sooo.... how you gonna deal with Putin then? Dealing with him is risky also.

If people hear the entire tape, it's not going to look that good for Romney's entire class, much less Romney himself.

Two factors drive the skewing of tax expenditures toward the well-off. First, the more money you make, the more likely you are to engage in activities the tax code favors, whether it is saving for retirement, purchasing expensive homes with larger mortgages or giving to a favored charity.

Second, people in high income tax brackets get a higher percentage of their deductions returned in the form of lower taxes. A dollar given to charity by someone in the 35 percent tax bracket reduces federal taxes on that income by 35 cents, while a dollar given to charity by someone in the 10 percent tax bracket only reduces their taxes by a dime.

Some tax-favored activities are almost entirely the province of the well-to-do. For instance, the capital gains and dividends exclusion – it is taxed at a flat 15 percent rate instead of normal rates – reduced taxes by $77.7 billion in 2011. Fully three-quarters of that tax break went to filers in the top 1 percent of the income distribution. The bottom 60 percent of the population received just 1.1 percent of its benefits.

Romney, who includes himself among the makers, is a major beneficiary of this special treatment in the tax code.
