"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Hurricane Romney, "Go Home and Call 211" and the Politics of Everything

Quote:

With Clint Eastwood's to-hell-with-this-wooden-chair speech in the past, the brutally drawn-out Republican National Convention has come to an end, leaving the Romney campaign to finally focus on the last three months of the election season. And these upcoming few weeks are the most important: as the candidates mark out their final talking points, the notorious yet senselessly hopeless skeptics known as the 'independent voters' go through the ultimate process of elimination. Hooray for the two-party system!

Moving on from Tampa, Mitt has found himself in hurricane territory: after accepting an invite from Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, the Republican hopeful traveled down to the devastated lands in Isaac's path. These were the towns that unfortunately exist outside of the vast levee system that "protects" Louisiana's shores after Katrina. And most of them were found underwater by authorities after the storm hit.

Once there, Romney spent close to an hour with Jindal shaking hands with first responders and National Guardsmen. The Governor pointed out to reporters that he extended the invite to Mr. Obama as well even though the President is coming on his own accord this Monday. And Jindal has a history of not accepting invites from the President, too: he was one of the few Republican governors that refused to accept stimulus funds a few years back. At the time, Louisiana had one of the worst unemployment numbers in the country

Mitt also met Jodie Chiarello, a 42-year-old woman who lost her house thanks to Isaac. Since the federal funds did not come to her area a few years back, her house was submerged under water and, now, she has nowhere to go. When Jodie asked Mitt what he could do about the situation, he had a brilliant plan to salvage what was left.

"He just told me to, uhm, there's assistance out there," she told reporters. "He said, 'go home and call 211.'"

For those who do not know, 211 is a public service number one calls for basic human needs resources and other physical/mental resources in times of crisis. According to its website, you can also call it for unemployment benefits, daycare and donation centers. It's like the 311 number we have here in New York - it's a direct connection to your government, except they'll probably put you on hold for fifteen minutes or so. Relax, the government will help you when it gets around to it.

Besides the fact that Jodie has no home to call 211 from, Romney's suggestion relies upon an individual responsibility that lies as the cornerstone of his partner-in-crime's budget. In Path to Prosperity, Paul Ryan offers an 80% cut in discretionary spending - the largest gutting of governmental public services in our lifetime - and FEMA finds itself stuck on the chopping block. Although exact numbers aren't given to how much disaster funds would be cut, it's safe to say that calling 211 might be the only option left in a nation starved for cash flow.

This was the point made by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid yesterday when he chastised Mitt and Paul for even thinking that they could show sympathy for the hurricane victims. A bit harsh? Yes. In a statement, he wrote,

"It is the height of hypocrisy for Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan to make a pretense of showing sympathy for the victims of Hurricane Isaac when their policies would leave those affected by this disaster stranded and on their own."

hey! Wade-a-minnit!

Doesn't 211 connect you to GOVERNMENT help? That same gub'mint that can't do anything right, wastes your tax dollars, and intereferes with private individuals, charities, and religious groups who are supposed to take care of you? The same agencies that Mitt-n-them are gonna reduce the budget to because it's a burden on businesses, individuals and the economy?

But Ol' Mitt can tell somebody to call them up and request help and benefits?

Maybe he oughtta give out the number of the local Mormon temple? (But then, Mormon charities have a rep for only benefitting Mormons, and for using charity as a tool to enforce church membership and loyalty.) So maybe you shouldn't ask them unless you're white and successful and don't really need help. And God forbid you should practice your own religious freedom and believe in another Diety or belief system.

And I thought it was a nice touch of Romney to invite the President down there. Like he owns the place. He's a damn carpetbagger outta Utah or Chicago or Boston or somewhere himself.

I'm waiting for the R's to claim that Obama did just as bad a job as Bush and Brownie, because there was some flooding and half a million people are without electricity, and, at last count, 4 people died. As big a fail as the response to Katrina.

Yah, sure, you betcha.

DINGDINGDINGDING!!! We have a winner!

Yes, Romney told the woman with no home, in an area largely without power or phone service, to go home and call for her government bailout. You know, like Bain Capital did. ;)

Kwik,
I actually freaked out early in the original post. Replied to it before I read the whole thing, it was such fakery. Reading the rest of the original, I find that it made the same points I did.

Well, you really don't expect them to give him any credit, do you?

Hopefully Katrina was a one-time-only thing, and such a catastrophe will never be repeated. I think we're all winners if that's the case.

Romney is the Beast. Just check the back of his neck you will find the 666 symbol.

What an idiot? This is the best the republicans can do? What ever happened to our Commander-in-Brief Sarah Palin?
This proves how out of touch Romney is, not only to the plight of regular people, but to the planet Earth.

Take a look at this video:

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

Perhaps HE could have showed a little human concern? Perhaps temporized his platform to say that yes indeedy, there might be a few instances where government could do some good? Made some kind of understanding comment on how serious the disaster was?

Yanno, either be a politician and pay lip service to a potential voter or the other potential voters who might be interested in his response, or be a human, rather than an unfeeling greed machine trying to brush away a piece of trash as efficiently as possible?

B/c it does look really, really bad when the person who is intent on taking away government help is callous and mendacious enough to refer a person in need to that very help.

Me? Personally? I'd have asked her to step inside with me, taken her information, and promised to get her some help. And then I'd have followed up on that promise.

But I'm not the one saying we should eliminate funding for those kinds of things.

If I was him, and serious about helping her, I'd have told her to get in touch with one of the mortgage lending banks at Bain Capital, and called THEM MYSELF, told them to give her an absolute zero-profit loan, and get her house fixed.

He involved his businesses in the missing druggie-daughter thing that Rap wrote about, for the child of a true PERSONAL FRIEND, costing his businesses productivity and reduced profits.

When my Dad passed away, I received a share of his estate. His small-town banker called me to arrange the transfer of funds. My Dad had been one of the first depositors in his start-up bank, and had a balance of almost $200,000.

Hearing that I had no bank account, and no prospect of starting one, given how Los Angeles banks all want references and large deposits just to start a savings account, he said he'd call me back. By the time he called me back the next day, he called every connection he had in the LA area, and told me to contact the Branch Manager, by name, at a particular branch of a local bank. I went to see the guy, he knew who I was when I was introduced to him, and he personally waived all kinds of rules and opened the account for me. By the next day, the estate had been transferred.

So with a little internal political pressure and favortism, a bank can actually help little people any time it wants to.

All Romney had to do was order his minions to get on with it.

An ALMOST valid question. But those 1000's other of Mrs C's weren't there, weren't asking at that moment. That's how retail politics works: An INDIVIDUAL asks for political help or a favor, and the pol intervenes in that case. Asked publicly, the pol has to say No publicly, or else do something to help. If helping runs contrary to his public policy of reducing government, then he has to say so and take the heat, not refer her to a government bureaucracy he's talking about eliminating.

Seems I remember how John McCain got involved in a retail deal like this, only it fit his campaign, so he made the guy famous. Does the name Joe The Plumber ring a bell?

But people reading this will ask themselves - what would >> I << think if >> I << was in that position and got that answer?

Quite possibly. Also, it helps if you remember (and I know your memory's tricky in your old age, Geeze) that neither Kiki nor I are advocating slashing funding for programs like 211. That would be Romney and Ryan and the GOP who are behind that move.

Quote:

You have a choice: Keep helping people - which is why you SAY you're running for office in the first place - or tell them to sod off. If you're really a good politician AND a good person, you've likely got support staff who will step up and help them work their way through the paperwork and red tape to get the help they need.

Or, if you're Mitt Romney, you can just tell them to leave you alone, then go onto your next speech and tell people how useless such programs are when they try to help.

So what exactly would YOU have done, Geezer?

Nope. Local utility work had the power up and down all day yesterday, so I sat on the patio and read, rather than deal with a computer re-booting every few minutes.

As to what I'd do, if I were a private citizen touring the disaster area with Louisiana's Governor? I'd say, "Ma'am, let me introduce you to Governor Jindal, whose staff, I'm sure, will help you out." After all, the State does have plans and resources allocated to deal with such a problem - probably much better than an individual who really doesn't have the contacts and communications available to do anything on a massive scale in a short time.

BTW: I notice that when President Obama eventually got to Louisiana, he pretty much shook hands and did photo ops too. He also realizes that national-level politicians trying to help folks one-on-one is probably the least effective way, and could have bad political repercussions if something went wrong.

You understand the mistake you're making, right?

U expect Geezer to understand, and then admit to understanding, the irony of the "we built it" guy, who has advocated slashing the hell out of the very programs he told this woman to go home and wait for help from.

He's not capable of reasoning like that, or if he is, he can't admit to it, because his fellow conservatives will turn on him as "some elite fancypants education lovin Commie" or some such.
