America loves a winner!

The sheep pics were sorta moving, but it only reminds me of the brutishness of nature.

I wonder how long the book store will remain open w/ such a policy. Good for them if they can stay open and keep it going.

Snookie - I've said too much.

I wonder what the rules are for helping another competitor out, during the race. I think I'd rather finish or fail, on my own.

Subway ? Meh. If they can stay open by giving away free food, good for them.

Stranded kittehs ?... again, nature is a beast.

More free stuff given away... what ever.

The Guatemalan girl and the tourist is sorta touching.

The letter from the Muslim is very neighborly. They sound like fine folk.

Nice pics... but I'm still iffy on humanity.

Really, really lovely. Brought a few tears to my eyes.

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

Maybe I live in the wrong area...Maybe I live around the wrong people. Since we figured out hubbs and the Aspergers thing, I've become really very good at reading people, and most days I wish I hadn't.

For every truth people tell, there are a dozen lies...For every decent act, a hundred evil ones committed or intended. If could show you the hundred or so pictures in my head that are soooo bad that they completely drown out the twenty you posted...

I used to believe in the .oo1 percent. Supposedly that is why matter exists, because it is .oo1 percent stronger than "anti-matter" forces... I'm pretty sure evil's got the upper hand these days. We're going to have to find a better way to curb baser instincts somehow if we're gonna get our humanity back.

I guess I stand with the grumpy guy on this one.......I been stabbed in the back one too many damn times I guess.

Yeah, lots of good food gets tossed, but don't let the govt see you giving it away to folks. They might write you a ticket.

They had me at #1.

I think it's nice....

I think things like this happen a lot more than we think they do. We just never hear about it all that much. If you watch the news 24/7, all you hear about is the bad stuff, because apparently that's what sells...

The diner check kind of got me. Made me remember the night where me, my two younger bros and my single mom were eating at Dennys (our "home away from home"). When we were leaving and Mom was going to pay the bill, this elderly gentleman told my mom something like "he hadn't been so entertained in a long time" and paid our bill.

It feels good to do things like that every once in a while. I never give to charity, but there are some random things I like to do for total strangers here and there. I would highly suggest avoiding the urge to give strangers rides though after a horrible night I had about 10 years ago....

I agree with KPO, and that's as far as it goes. I loved seeing these pictures, they remind me that there is still good out there, and yes, lots more than we ever hear about. Doesn't change anything, just nice to contemplate. Thank you.

By the way, as to the book store, the sign clearly says "the books ON THE PORCH"--which are most likely used books. Just sayin'.

Yeah, that quote from Contact hit me when I heard it, too. It's been said in many ways, because it is so true, but that was one of the ways it was best put and I've never forgotten it. I always remembered this one, too, from Starman:
Quote:

You are a strange species. Not like any other. And you'd be surprised how many there are. Intelligent but savage. Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best when things are worst.

After this, you will still be poor, illiterate, be subject to violence, live in extreme poverty, and die young, but hey, here's flowers to make it all better. Just so you know, there's no hard feelings on my part.

Why do you automatically assume all those things for the little girl ? Is it just because she's got brown skin ? Or lives in Central America? Her dress looks pretty fancy, imo. And it's clean, in good shape. It's not like she's wearing a burlap sack w/ cardboard and duct tape shoes on her feet.

Now, the man giving the homeless girl his sandals, SHE looks the part that you're describing. Living in extreme poverty.... but hey, at least now she's got shoes on her feet. For a while.

"Why do you automatically assume all those things for the little girl ?"

What I see is that her skin is brown, her features are Indian and her clothes are Indian. She appears to be rural Indian, who for the most part are illiterate, impoverished, and short-lived.

And he looks Anglo, wealthy and not in the US.

And that is what we're supposed to see.

But we know nothing about her, or him. They're mere stand-ins to illustrate those vague notions. I'm responding to those notions we're supposed to see. Tho for all we know she's a virgin being sold to a pedophile.

BTW: poverty in rural traditional cultures doesn’t look the same as poverty in westernized cities.

It's funny to see you run away from this topic, and then bring up completely separate, totally irrelevant issues in other threads.

You feel embarrassed for making such an idiotic statement, so you feel the need to strike out in anger.

Why not just be a grown up about this and admit - " Yeah, Raptor, your point does make more sense. " , and just move on ?

It was Michigan, not Minnesota. ( I corrected my error, you're still making yours )

I never said Carter RAISED taxes. When are you going to give up the ghost on that one ?

Atlanta's never had crime sprees where 40+ folks get shot, in multiple weekends. Chicago's had 2, recently.

And I never said exterminate all Muslims. You're just flat out delusional.

How about that 225 year old Congress which meets in Minnesota! Care to explain that away? That thread is here:

And how about that CARTER! He MUST have raised taxes, right? Do you wish to discuss your claim? that thread is here:

Ha!

Shall we go to those threads to debate your problems with facts?

"It was Michigan, not Minnesota."
It was not CONGRESS like you said, and it wasn't 225 years either. "The Congress somehow manages to survive some 225 years ..." Somehow you corrected one error with another and STILL couldn't get any of it right.

"I never said Carter RAISED taxes."
He just LOWERED them.

"Atlanta's never had crime sprees where 40+ folks get shot, in multiple weekends. Chicago's had 2, recently."
Atlanta just has a HIGHER murder rate, so that makes it better --- how? As for recently, Chicago's murder rate was highest in 2010, dropped 2% in 2011, and looks to be approximately 25% down this year (if you assume rates will stay the same during the next half of the year). https://data.cityofchicago.org/Public-Safety/2012-Chicago-Murder-Stati

BTW: poverty in rural traditional cultures doesn’t look the same as poverty in westernized cities.

Hey 1kiki,

I see the pictures and the follow up to them about why a girl who is wearing a bright and vibrantly colored dress could still be considered poor and illeterate, and for argument's sake, let's just say I'll take your word on it that this is the case in an overwhelming majority of cases in India so we can make that half of the picture a reasonable assumption.

What I didn't see was an explanation of why the white guy in the picture looks wealthy? I've never been wealthy, and I've been known to wear a clean white Tshirt and black shorts with a nice haircut in my youth. Hell... I even wore some ridiculous bling along with it (silver, cause I couldn't afford the gold stuff like my friends). I even had a great smile back then too, and I probably hadn't even seen a dentist for five years before reaching his age (big secret, I brushed at least twice a day... and I didn't pick up smoking and drinking coffee until around that age).

For all we know, this kid was on a mission or some peace corp deal. To assume any form of wealth, in my mind, based solely off of the picture without any other context is a form of racism.

I'm not lambasting you for this. I'm just pointing your post out to educate. I feel that way a lot these days, especially in my world which becomes more and more racially integrated everyday. I feel that just because I'm not wearing stubble all over my face, I don't have tattoos all over, and I don't live in a trailer park, I'm getting profiled everyday by minorities as being some lucky white guy who had a great upbringing that I didn't deserve. I work 24 hours a week now overnight stocking shelves and bailing cardboard boxes.

It shouldn't bother me, but it does because I do care about what people think about me. Just like an asian guy with a 7" package hates knowing that everyone assumes he has only a 3" package, I hate people thinking that I'm in some sort of exclusive money club because I'm white and I don't go out of the house looking like shit.

Every race has bad stereotypes, but how come black guys are the only ones that have any good ones. They're all massive under the belt and they can all dance, right?

"in India" ... mmm ... not India. Indians generally from Mexico, or Central or S America. The children's pictures were from Chiapas, the the most southern state in Mexico. Regarding lifespan in Chiapas, "But disparities persist; life expectancy is lower by 10 to 15 years and infant mortality can be twice as high in the poorer southern states like Chiapas." Regarding its poverty and education, "According to the United Nations Development Program, which tracks life expectancy, literacy, and standard of living, Chiapas ranks lower on the Human Development Index than any other Mexican state. To put that in context, the capital, Mexico City, scores about as well as the Czech Republic; Chiapas ranks with Syria."

Anyway, that was just for information.

"For all we know, this kid was on a mission or some peace corp deal. To assume any form of wealth, in my mind, based solely off of the picture without any other context is a form of racism."

I take your point. The fresh haircut, good quality and clean if casual clothes, might be due to a higher-spending if poorer lifestyle. The fact that he's so far from home at such a young age might not be a result of tourism and discretionary spending, but some other reason. And he might not even be American. But what he looks to be is definitely a first-world inhabitant.

So my point is that I prickle at the idea that a (relatively) wealthy person can make poverty all better through a meaningless gesture.

"I'm getting profiled everyday by minorities as being some lucky white guy who had a great upbringing that I didn't deserve."

I know the feeling. I've had blacks openly resent me b/c they THINK I started out with everything. I DO recognize tho that I had some advantages - I went to a suburban high school, my parents REALLY valued education and pushed me to get good grades and go to college, and I didn't start out behnd others b/c of my color (though my sex definitely set me back many times).

India..... Mexico...

You say tomato, I say tomato.....

If lifespan is all we're going for here, what's great to say about that? If you've lived over 60 here and you're shitting yourself, let alone not contributing to society, why continue to exist just because we have hospitals that can just barely allow you to survive?

As for the picture of the guy, no matter if he was a "tramp" or a prince dressed in white-trash garb, I don't believe that this particular picture was taken in the moment for a political agenda.

Even if things were EXACTLY as you originally captioned them, I don't believe for even one second that the young girl and the young man in the picture had any idea of the concept of "political" agendas of anyone taking the photo, let alone had a political agenda of their own. A picture is worth a thousand words, and I don't believe from the expression of either one of them that a word of it was scripted.

I won't ask you for specific incidences for when you were segregated against because of your sex, but I'll just ask you to really look inwardly on that topic 1kiki. Now granted, I'm not a "college guy", but aside from one job I've ever had, I know for a fact that the rest of them hired men and women at equal pay. Hell, every job I apply for today asks if I'm male or female, let alone a bunch of other "demographic" information I think is none of their f-ing business until I show up to the interview.

I did happen to get the primo raises in my room for 5 years at the last good one, but I'd like to think that that was due to the fact that I exceeded expectations on conference calls when there were problems (outside sources lauding me), as well as the fact that I hosted the bi-weekly poker night and also knew enough about the bible (the little I know) to turn a 15 minute conversation with genuine questions in my religious bosses office into a 2 hour one.

I still don't buy into religion of any sort, but I learned more at that job on their dime than I ever would have on my own unpaid free time...

Don't blame me for knowing how to play my audience like a flute.

Nothing at all to do with sex.....

Sorry to sound crass....

I wish I had tits....

If this mind was in the body of a woman with beautiful tits, I'd be halfway to milking a billionaire dead and having him leave it all to me.

"... specific incidences for when you were segregated against because of your sex .."

Well, there's many instances but here are two VERY overt and LIFE-CHANGING ones:

1) I went to apply for a union apprenticeship as an electrician and as a pipe-fitter. Now, I realize that these opportunities are few and far between, and mostly go to family members who are already in the union. And, if I didn't know that already, standing in line with perhaps 300 - 400 men for hours told me my chances were low. But when I got to the table, I wasn't even allowed to pick up an application form, b/c, as I was told, "they will never hire a female".

2) I was told by the university medical school adviser that the university did not admit females into the medical school I hoped to get in to, b/c they "didn’t have the facilities" for women such as bathrooms, showers, or lockers rooms.

I was told I would not being able to take shop in high school specifically b/c they didn't allow female students ... and a few other VERY overt examples.

Plus a lifetime of smaller, subtler instances. If you have sympathy for an Asian guy assumed to have an inferior 'package' on the basis of being Asian, or feel that you face stereotyping on the basis of being white, I can’t imagine why you wouldn't think women face discrimination on the basis of being women.

Hehe...

Pipefitter..... check....

I tested 93% on the test part... for whatever reason, I was only over 73% after the interview....

They didn't tell me the male/female shit, but they just took my 25 bucks and let me test knowing they'd never hire me.

Sure 1kiki, they hire blacks and mexicans and women, but only friends of friends......

They've lost their ability to hire only IRISH to his union and only ITALIAN to this union, but you're fooling yourself if you think you can get in on your own.

I was working security at BP a while back. There were Women on the site in full blue jumpsuits that were making 4 times as much an hour as I was doing security. It wasn't because they tested high enough...... It was because they knew somebody. And when it comes to a "competent" woman, as I assume you are, it would be MUCH easier for you to get in than it is me.

I scored nearly 94% on my tests and had two vouches and still couldn't get into the HVAC. Had I done the "Building Trades" I'd be working today..... I don't want to do that shit. I'm to smart for that....

I'll keep testing for HVAC

Next year, at the interview, I'm not wearing a suit...

I'm not wearing a tie...

I'm wearing a t-shirt and jeans

And I'll tell them they can eat my ass for my attire....

It didn't do shit for me the year before but make me nervous since I was only about 1 in 4 that wore one and we'd never have to wear one on the job.

Their mistake if they don't hire me....

I am the SMARTEST MOTHER FKER They every knew!

But see.... all of your examples are for "good jobs".....

As of yet, I can't get one yet either.....

I can't fight you on that either way....

Whatever you do, you go girl!

Oh dear. We must have got our wires crossed. I have a pretty good job which I will definitely hang on to as best I can manage. I just did want to express that indeed, some people - even me - have been in similar situation to you, even facing definite bias, and come out OK.

Anyway, that guy and girl - probably had no agenda at all. The posting of it I think is not so innocent. If we weren't to think of it as people crossing barriers to caring - like white first-world dude and poor Indian girl - it wouldn't have been posted as an example of that point.

On a different topic, let me reiterate - I'm so stoked you got that job. It's generally easier to get a better job once you have a job in the first place.

Anyway, anything else I'll PM to you. I'm sure most people aren't interested in what has become a private conversation.

And it's also why you can't quote me on ANY OTHER of your claims. You can just post thread links, and pretend you know what the hell you're talking about. But you don't.

I'm sure you'll go through this song and dance, a few more times. You seem to be fixated of it, for some reason.

Let it go. You're wrong. Get over yourself.
