Newsweek stirs buzz with 'first gay president' cover
(AFP) – 22 minutes ago

WASHINGTON — Newsweek made no apologies Monday for anointing Barack Obama as "the first gay president" on its cover this week, matching its rival Time in terms of online buzz.
It depicted Obama with an angelic rainbow halo just days after Obama became the first sitting president of the United States ever to come out in favor of same-sex marriage.

"Obama's earned every stripe in this haloed rainbow," said Tina Brown, editor of Newsweek and its online counterpart The Daily Beast, on her Twitter account (@TheTinaBeast).

White House press secretary Jay Carney, asked what Obama thought about the cover, said Monday: "I don't know if he's seen it and I haven't spoken to him about it."

Newsweek made it their cover. I sure as hell didn't. Why don't we move this in a not Raptor's fault direction?

Niki, you sure are fussy today. What's the matter ?

Oddly enough, this is the SAME Newsweek that called Obama " sort of GOD ". Funny, ain't it ? What, with the rainbow halo and all. So, does this make him a sort of Gay Jesus ?

PN's been calling Obama gay for like six months, possibly longer. I think he posted recently with a title to that effect, about this very cover. Something about Obama being a bundle of sticks?

Oh my, you're quite right on this one. I must really have a blind spot for PN nonsense. No excuse, though. I can see how Niki thinks I lost my marbles on this one.

Newsweek went off the deep end a long, long time ago. Evan Thomas went over the cliff right along with them. Further into the "god" quote he says of Obama "I don't think he has – his shtick is he's the teacher. He's the teacher. He is going to say, ‘now, children, stop fighting and quarreling with each other.’ And he has a kind of a moral authority that he – he can – he can do that." That's assinine, pure and simple."

It's you POSTING this which is nuts--as is Newsweek. I don't know how they fell so far, but they've truly gone off the deep end; this cover is a prime example. So is some of their other shit:

One almost wonders if Newsweek is working for the right, given their buy-in to the idiocy that the left saw Obama as some kind of Messiah:
Quote:

As Obama closes in on the Oval Office, a theme that has already been absorbed into the media mind is the McCain campaign’s “messiah” attack (launched by Team McCain’s “The One” ad[/u). While raising anxieties about a President Obama’s exercise of power, framing Obama as an aspiring deity also works like a red cape in the face of the Christian right by flaunting the notion Obama somehow sees himself as a God, God himself, or, the son of God.
So THAT's how it got started; well played, GOP/McCain, well played!

I'll let this speak for me:
Quote:

Sometimes magazine publishers and their photo-illustrators are too clever by half. I appreciate the desire to visually punctuate Obama’s support for gay marriage (even if he was pushed on by him his “team of rivals”). I also get the pressure to sell magazines (and maybe try to one-up TIME for its viral breastfeeding cover last week). Still, crowning Obama the “Gay Messiah,” as Bag contributor Karrin Anderson writes:
Quote:

“…not only plays on stereotypes of him as self-righteous and messianic, but actually runs counter to the spirit of Andrew Sullivan’s article. (Sullivan, though Catholic, has always heralded secularism in politics.)”
Even if inadvertent, this illustration picks up an Obama attack meme which was played pretty hard in 2008. In light of that history, and because the image is so freighted religiously, I can just imagine someone as astute about imagery and ideology as Karl Rove taking one look, sitting back smugly, and uttering: “holier than thou.” http://www.bagnewsnotes.com/2012/05/not-the-one-again-our-take-on-the-
newsweek-obama-gay-messiah-cover/
I know where the "Obama as messiah" campaign came from, which is why the right has so latched onto it and persevered with it, despite any evidence to the contrary--which of course explains why YOU've latched onto it and keep bringing up one remark from 2009 (it IS 2012, you know).

Now I understand all that, it's no longer interesting. Newsweek is off the rails. Thomas is a nutbag with some kind of Obama complex. You are a walking parrot of right-wing idiocy trapped in an apparently increasingly desperate need to both get attention and find something...ANYTHING...to put anyone and anyTHING on the left down. I'll look for threads with more substance now, and leave you to your imaginings.

Wrong thread, Niki.

( But thanks for making my point for me, even though it wasn't really MY point in the first place )

Maybe I otter!

( But thanks again, Captain Obvious, for pointing out what has been said, twice already. Once by me, even. In all seriousness, is that some sort of Rule of Life you keep to, only saying things which I have already said, first ? Sure seems like that's the case )

And PN ONLY beat me by a little over 1 day. ( Not 'days', as you falsely claimed )

Newsweek and Time are Desperate. How long before they fabricate sensational stories or try and create them? "I don't know, he worked for a magazine, said he couldn't say, said he'd give $100,000 if I...."

So he's the first black, bi president? I think he's going to keep that title for quite a while.

I agree, Pizmo. This about says it for me:
Quote:

Are you kidding me? I get that Andrew Sullivan is a man with an agenda and I completely support his right to make his opinions heard. I also understand that Newsweek – like any other publication – is in business to make a profit and that frequently involves pushing the envelope in terms of catching the public’s attention. But at what point is too much simply too much? When is the shark definitively jumped and the daily bread burned past any reasonable definition of being toast? Ladies and gentlemen, this would be that point.
Thing is, as one pundit said, for most people, the cover is as much as they'll ever see, and there are so many idiots out in "America the Ignorant" who believe stupid things about Obama (and more), how many will this convince them it's for real?

We really are America the Ignorant, in so many ways, but particularly this:

21 percent of Americans believe there are real sorcerors, conjurers, and warlocks out there.
4 in ten people still believe Obamacare has death panels.
As of 2006, half of Americans still believed Saddam had WMD.
As of August 2010, 24% still believe Obama is a Muslim (another 24% "don't know" whether he's Christian or Muslim.
As of 1999, 20% of Americans believe the sun revolves around the Earth!!
In 2007, 33% of Americans still believed Saddam Hussein was responsible for 911
63% of young Americans can't find Iraq on a map; 9 out of 10 can't find Afghanistan.
Currently, 24% of Americans believe Obama wasn't born in America

So now, how many idjits out there will start believing Obama is gay?

"America the Ignorant" says it all.

The amusing thing about this whole thread is that Andrew Sullivan is a hack conservative known for making up bullshit (like the "Trig trutherism" idiocy)...that this comes from him should be a JOKE, and a diss on the right wing and their lies! To claim Newsweek's annointing Obama as gay (or almost anything they publish) has ANY validity whatsoever is the biggest joke of all.

Used to be folks who'd quote a list of statistics like this to PROVE that Blacks weren't smart enough to be allowed to vote. Looks like the target changes, but the bigotry stays the same.

Pointing out ignorance (with no mention of race) is bigotry?

Golly, Geezer, seems you may be projecting a bit. Do you lump yourself in with the poor, downtrodden ignorant these days?
