Mitt Romney, Fred Malek, and Animal Cruelty

If you read this blog, you already know about Mitt Romney's history of animal cruelty.

On Monday, Romney will be the beneficiary of a fundraiser that is being hosted for him by Fred Malek. Who is Malek? He is the former President of Marriott Hotels and Northwest Airlines; former assistant to U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and H.W. Bush; and former National Finance Committee Co-Chair for John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign.

Fred Malek is also part of a group of men who were arrested after killing, skinning, and barbecuing a dog in a city park in Peoria, IL in 1959.

Is he trying to get Michael Vick to endorse him?

Is beating it to death with a 2x4 and then skinning it "humane"?

Hello,

Not unless the first blow killed it.

I won't condemn someone for eating a dog (as long as it's not my dog.)

But killing it incompetently, thus prolonging its suffering, is wrong. There's especially no reason to do this when you are killing a single animal, as there is no consideration for assembly line efficiencies.

It sounds like they'd have been better off beheading it, but judging by the way you make it sound, I'm not sure a clean kill was the goal.

From the stuff I've read, it sounds like it was supposed to be some kind of a "prank". No reports of them eating the dog, just beating it to death, skinning it, and barbecuing it in a city park, on a spit. They were arrested drunk and covered in the dog's blood. Sounds like they really enjoyed themselves.

Again, remember the Romney-Sembler-Lichfield connection to WWASPS, and how they treated HUMAN CHILDREN.
In respect to that, is animal cruelty really that surprising ?
What really grinds my gears, although I do love animals - is that treating a dog in the fashion they did those kids happens to be illegal, thus exposing the fact that kids have less rights and legal protection than pets or livestock.
That in and of itself is pretty apalling.

Anyhows, there's a well known link between those behaviors.

Thanks, Pizmo - Yes, it was put up as a snark, and yes, it's serious; it can be both at the same time. I really don't know that many people - aside from Rappy, of course - who think killing and barbecuing a dog as a prank is a funny, harmless thing to do.

As Anthony points out, if the story is true - and Romney's buddy has never denied it - then it's a pretty strong indication of something seriously wrong with him. Psychopath, sociopath, demented, monster... I don't know what the right word for such disregard for pets would be, but "Mr. President" shouldn't be among them.

Like it really matters. In a few billion years, the sun will toast this planet, and all we've ever been will likely be lost to the Cosmos ( save for a few bits of hardware, and what ever signals of ours get picked up by someone out there... )

Anyway, about the dog on the roof thing... what's the 1 thing dogs love to do more than anything else , when riding in cars?

Stick their head out the window and let the wind blow in their faces! Well, credit the Romneys for giving their pup what EVERY dog wants. It's gorram brilliant, if you ask me.

So you're saying the Romneys had dog diarrhea running down the rear window of the car because the dog was so happy his bowels turned to liquid?

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Quote:

According to the Boston Globe, the former Massachusetts governor placed the dog, called Seamus, in a kennel attached to the roof of his white Chevy station wagon. He and his wife and five sons then set off on holiday.

After a few miles, Mr Romney's eldest son, Tagg, raised the alarm. "Dad!" he yelled. "Gross!" A brown liquid was dripping down the rear windscreen.

In protest at his treatment perhaps, Seamus had suffered a diarrhoea attack. The results made driving difficult.

Exhibiting presidential-style cool in a crisis, and with his family howling in disgust, Mr Romney pulled over. He borrowed a hosepipe and washed down Seamus, the car, and the kennel - then set off again with the dog still on the roof.

The Massachusetts Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the 1983 incident, which came to light this week, could be investigated for possible dog endangerment.

Ingrid Newkirk, an animal rights activist, said Mr Romney had placed the dog under "extreme stress", causing it to "lose control of its bowels". The incident verged on dog and child abuse, she suggested.

Provided the dog didn't have the runs in the first place, the best option would've been to have the kids seat belt in and let the dog sit across their laps. If the dog wants an open window, my experience is they'll climb over everyone in the cabin to get to one. No chance that way to the ropes and kennel coming lose and going splat on the highway.

*Considers*

I approve, however I think someone should be holding the front end of the dog. However, this is far safer, if kind of extremely gross for both everyone in the car and anyone who sees it.

This was a valuable learning and problem solving exercise, and my earlier confusion has been resolved.

From all accounts and Wikipedia, Seamus was in an AIR-TIGHT KENNEL for 12 hours. What they mean by "air-tight" I have no idea, 'cuz obviously if the runs can get out, the air can get in, but whatever it means, no, the dog wasn't enjoying "sticking his head out" anything. Not even a good try and defense.

Also, Romney hosing the dog and kennel down then going blithely on his way? If it was hot, the dog would have been suffering from the beginning; if it was cold, wet dog in wet kennel would have been awful. Not to mention TWELVE HOURS in a kennel on the roof of the car? That's insane, and nowhere does it say he stopped to let the dog out (tho' I like to hope he did).

What he did amounts to animal cruelty, period. Measure of the man, in my opinion. Nor is there any mention of the family complaining. Measure of them too, in my mind. My sympathies go to Seamus, it's a shame he ended up in THAT family!

At least he didn't EAT the dog, like Obama

Quote:

The Daily Caller noted that in President Obama’s best-selling memoir, “Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance,” the president recalls being fed dog meat as a young boy in Indonesia with his stepfather, Lolo Soetoro.

“With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy),” the president wrote. “Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.”

After his mother married Soetoro, Obama lived in Indonesia from 1967 until 1971, from roughly the age of 6 through 10.

The discovery that the president had eaten dog meat prompted wise-cracks on twitter (hashtag — #ObamaDogRecipes) and this tweet from Romney strategist Eric Fehrstrom, who re-tweeted Axelrod’s original message with a different take on the picture of the president and Bo.

Mitt's idea of having a pet reminds me of a lot of rural people who live in Utah, who think "animals should always be outside, and shouldn't be indoors with the humans" and then applied to cars.

Most of them have trucks and the dog would stay in the back rather than in the front cabin. Though I think even that is safer than tying a kennel to the hood of the car.

When I was doing field camp for my degree in geoscience, people were allowed to bring their families, and we all camped out on one of the trips, and the other trip we got permission to stay in a BLM fireteam station. The TA brought his girlfriend and his pitbull, and the pitbull stayed in the tent and their room, but there was this other family with a new puppy and the new puppy always had to stay outside tied up to something. I felt so bad for that poor dog, he was always soaking wet and freezing.

I think keeping animals outdoors is just fine. Sure if it gets to be very cold or very hot one ought to bring them indoors briefly until the weather mends, but other than that I think its up to people whether to have indoor or outdoor, or both, pets.

They should have put their dog in the car though after his accident because its obvious he's not doing well up top.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

My mother was fed her own pet chicken as a kid. She loved that chicken. :( she called it penny, and it used to follow her around everywhere. One day, her dad decided that penny would make a good meal, so he took her to the butcher, and announced it to the family at the dinner table while they were eating their pet. I'm not sure exactly what made him think that was a good idea. There was a lot of crying.

I do think there is a difference between animals raised as pets and animals raised as food. Whether it's wrong is relative to how attached the person was - if a person can kill and eat something they care about, it becomes a little disturbing.

At the same time, after hearing both stories, yeah, it becomes hard to say that either side has room to talk. I think I'll join in on the side that says both campaigns are being dumb and to get back to the issues already.

In essence: Yup. It's a distraction in the end, nothing more. But my feelings about Romney's mentality on this issue still run hot, and that won't change.

For those of us who have had the gift of loving pets, the minor inconveniences attending them are totally unimportant. If that's not the case, the person shouldn't have pets. Simple as that. Far too many people have "pets" they pay no attention to and treat like possessions with no feelings or rights. That's how "bad" dogs are "created", just as people who treat their children like possessions create children who go on to have difficulties in their personal relationships.

Byte, my heart goes out to that friend of yours; had it happened to me, I think I'd have left home (if I was old enough). That's not only something I would abide, but I wouldn't stay with any parent who had that mentality. And the pup you mentioned; if he was young enough, he probably didn't live long with treatment like that.

My feelings about animals, I recognize are not shared by others. But they're strong feelings, and they apply to differing degrees to all animals. There are responsibilties to taking on the life of an animal, and an animal considered a "pet" is deserving of decency.

most farm families I've known have a different way they treat their pets vs. the farm animals, the pets get names etc. and are for getting attached to, the farm animals are for food and milk and possibly selling to someone else later. Sometimes though the farm animals that they get milk from etc. have names, but not the ones they're going to eat. Horses always have names of course.

Whatzit and Raptor's last few posts are truly stupid, cretinous and reflective of...well, the usual.

As to bug juice, that's a laugh; we all do, stupid. The FDA decides how many bugs are "acceptable" in many juices, and Starbucks has used bugs in their juice for ages:
Quote:

Strawberries & Creme Frappuchinos at Starbucks Corp.will no longer feature a splash of bug — the coffee giant is ditching the red dye made from crushed beetles.

The tropical, cochineal insects were dried and then processed into a coloring product to give that rosy hue to the Frappuchinos, as well as strawberry banana smoothies, raspberry swirl cakes, birthday cake pops, mini doughnuts with pink icing and red velvet whoopee pie.

The insects, often found in a woolly-looking mass that covers prickly pear cactuses in Latin America, are also commonly used to color fabrics and cosmetics. http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-starbucks-bug-color-20120420,0,6

He’s right, this is less about anything I did than about the fact that it can be done. When corrupt hacks push stupid narratives and make scandals out of minor, decades-old incidents to embarrass people they disagree with politically, you can talk back to them. You can’t get them to admit they’re wrong, because that’s f***ing impossible, but you can knock them off their game. You can ruin their day. You can force them to resort to, say, reporting on what the Republican candidate said about a cookie in Pittsburgh. Because they’ve got nothing else to talk about.

And you can do it in your pajamas.

Update: Someone just reminded me that Obama actually won a Grammy for reading the audiobook of Dreams from My Father, in which he bragged about feasting on Fido. Why? Because they couldn’t figure out how to give him an Oscar, a Tony, and the NFL MVP award for it too.

Update: It just occurred to me that Michelle Obama will need to think twice the next time she tries to tell the rest of us what to eat. What a great week this has been

I would like to print up these bumper stickers;

It's a Obama eat Dog world

Obama nick named his dog, "Lunch".

Obama's favorite song is "Who let the Dogs out...of the kitchen"

Puppy: The other white meat

I think they would make big $!

Which posts of mine ? The one where I simply related the TRUE story of Obama saying he's eaten dog before ? ( Because he has, you know. )

Or the corny humor of naming a horse Elmer or Krazy ? C'mon..., lighten up. Geeze.

And despite being done 100's if not 1000's of times over, the '
Hitler gets angry' vid was funny. You laughed, you know you did.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

It appears that the dogs have heard about these stories, and are getting their revenge.

Quote:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A 2-month-old child was killed and dismembered by a dog in his family's South Carolina home as his father slept, authorities said Friday.

Aiden McGrew's mother called 911 when she got home around 11 a.m. and discovered the boy's leg was severed by a retriever-Labrador mix the family had taken into the home a few weeks earlier, Dorchester County deputies said.

The boy died at the hospital a short time later, Coroner Chris Nisbet said in a news release.

Nisbet said the boy was bitten and dismembered, but he refused to answer additional questions about the infant's injuries. He said he hopes an autopsy scheduled for Saturday will determine if the boy was dead before the dog dismembered him.

NIKI2

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Cave: Nailed it! Thank you for intelligent comment.

I didn't watch the video; I rarely click on links from Raptor or Wulf, having a pretty good idea what they are. As to dog being eaten by some cultures, yes it is, we all know that. To have refused it as a child would be considered weird It has no relation whatsoever to someone choosing to put their dog on the roof of a car in a country which considers dogs pets, but we all realize it's necessary to come up with SOMETHING to strike back. We understand, no problem...see Cave's quote.

I see Whatzit continues his inanity.

And Geezer posts something totally and completely irrelevant. Had to be part of the conversation, I guess.

So, enough reading idiocy, I'm up early to get the pups out before it gets hot. Much better use of my time, and far more enjoyable. Carry on with your immature idiocy...

Inanity? What Romney did was silly, what Barry did was

Don't worry, the late night and standup comics won't hammer Barry's taste for dog meat and grassshoppers for long...if at all. I wouldn't be shocked to learn that Barry once ate HUMAN FLESH! I bet it's tough and tastes like chicken.

BYTEMITE

Whozits: I'd skip the last concept design. The others are obviously political, but the last one would be easy to misconstrue.

Not really sure WHY I'm helping, but, just pointing that out.
