Found this amusing...
Sexually Rejected Flies Turn to Booze
http://news.sciencemag.org/sciencenow/2012/03/sexually-rejected-flies-
turn-to-.html

Quote:

Offer a male fruit fly a choice between food soaked in alcohol and its nonalcoholic equivalent, and his decision will depend on whether he's mated recently or been rejected by a female. Flies that have been given the cold shoulder are more likely to go for the booze, researchers have found.

Ironic.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

You sure they were testing the flies? Sounds like typical human male behavior to me!

Is cancer now the only thing causing any problems in the world? Is addiction research all just wasted effort?

What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.

What a truly stupid pair of assumptions
If you're just trying to pick a fight fine, let's go.

I suggest that the flies were not sexually rejected, but impotent.

A woman walked into the kitchen to find her husband stalking about with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Hunting flies," he responded.

"Oh. Killing any?" she asked.
"Yep, 3 males, 2 females," he replied.

Intrigued, she asked. "How can you tell them apart?"
He responded, "3 were on a beer can; 2 were on the phone."

Feh, any testing involving Fruit Flies is generally done on the cheap - it's not like there's a shortage of em or they're hard to catch you know.

They're actually great research subjects because they are so simply constructed and so much is already known about them.

While on the one hand this seems a statement of the bloody obvious, the essential part of the research that ACTUALLY interests me, besides amusement value, is the relationship of Neuropeptides to conduct, which is after a fashion... fascinating.

SCIENCE!

I'm not trying to pick any fight; I am genuinely puzzled at your sarcastic comment dismissing research into addictive behavior, indicating that funds should be spent on cancer research instead, and so I questioned it. The implication of your statement is that cancer is the only, or at least the most important, venue of research. Another implication is that funding is wasted on this addiction research, as you dismissed it out of hand with your ironic wit. You should bear in mind that my questions arose from your own implications and blithe dismissal of the subject. And if my semi-sarcastic phrasing has offended you, bear in mind that I was responding to your own sarcasm.
Instead of maligning my character and intelligence, perhaps you should instead defend your statement? Or, alternately, retract it? Unless you're just trying to pick a fight, in which case I'm not interested.

You really just don't get humor then. I thought Frem's post was in the vain of, "Man, unfortunate creature... for all of our conceit he's as sad as a fruit fly." Then Kwicko followed up with a giggle: "sure that study wasn't done on human men?!" Did you see his funny? Then I tried to riff on Mike's joke, "yeah, too bad we aren't spending that money on something that affects a lot of people!" And then you chime in out of no where all serious and science righteous. Are you mad because I didn't pick heart disease?

Number of deaths for leading causes of death in the US.
Heart disease: 599,413
Cancer: 567,628
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 137,353
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 128,842
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 118,021
Alzheimer's disease: 79,003
Diabetes: 68,705
Influenza and Pneumonia: 53,692
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 48,935
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 36,909

Let me see if I can be equally obtuse so you can get a sense of what you sounded like:

Do you think we should stop all cancer research? So you think fruit flies are more important than people?

I think you maligned both of us with your questions.

I'd be happy to discuss scientific research in general or this article in particular if you want.

Pizmo, I have never known Rose to pick a fight, and I know here from all the way back at the other site I was on, before I came here. I'm afraid I didn't see the humor in your remark either, tho' I did in the other two posts. To me it came across like a Raptor snark--which is NOT to compare you to him, that's just how it came across to me. No offense intended, just saying that may be why Rose took it seriously.
