Hello,

Boycotts are part of the free market. Specifically, the 'demand' part of the equation. But I can understand this man's desire not to be bitten by the same dog. He's stepped over the line himself more than once, and risks the same kind of fallout.

And if I recall correctly, he has already tasted that fallout at least once, having been outright FIRED by ABC for stating the plain truth in the aftermath of 9/11. And I can't recall hearing a single conservative voice decrying that intimidation or his silencing.

Quote:

Too often when public figures fall prey to their own ill-chosen words, they clamor for free speech, and use words that suggest they are being unfairly persecuted or silenced. They forget it is just free speech coming back to feast on them, in countless free opinions of countless free peoples.

'Intimidation' by sponsor pullout? As though sponsors aren't in the game precisely to secure a positive public opinion. Why shouldn't they react when potential customers raise a clamor? Better to learn from this than complain about it. Every public figure should take this as a lesson to learn. You can't always count on 'I'm sorry' ending a matter. It's up to the audience to forgive you, and some words will stain you past apology.

Indeed. And apologies are generally accepted when they sound genuine. Rush's "apology" amounts to saying something akin to "I'm sorry you can't handle my words, and I'm sorry I acted like one of those terrorist, no-good Nazi-loving Democrats that you rightfully hate so much, but I wasn't wrong in what I said; you were wrong in what you heard."

Read an article last night, said: Only reason to fire Limbaugh is low ratings. i.e., in a free market.

Hello,

That's almost right. The only (financial) reason to fire him is if you can't make money off of him.

I presume new advertisers will surface to replace the old. But if they didn't, then his ratings wouldn't matter. Nobody would be making money off of him.

I suspect he'll survive this. Just like the Dixie Chicks (one of the victims of the boycotts that Republicans and Conservatives never participate in.)

Hello,

Over a decade ago, I bought this man's book. It seemed, at the time, that he might have something interesting to say.

If that was ever true, it seems that time has past.

Now I feel he is just a vile thug, hardly worth the spittle he spends.

No it doesn't. It takes a minimum of flying skill and the ability to close your eyes at the last minute. Lots of people have committed suicide and witnesses reported they had their eyes screwed shut or threw and arm over their eyes in their last moments on this earth.

You ever read The Catcher in the Rye?

Well, when I go out, I'm hoping it'll be pushing someone out of the way of a car or train or something. But it won't be brave because it's still me killing myself and not living with the consequences.

So, yeah, I don't really consider a suicide attack brave or heroic for the same reason. It's not about the fear or lack thereof, it's about being so super pathetic that you can't face your problems like a normal person. About as much as you can say about it is that people from less developed nations have much better reasons than all the spoiled people who have no right to complain.

No, it takes a fanatical belief in Club Allah and 72 virgins waiting for you on the other side. What you call 'bravery' , I call a dangerous result of the God™ delusion.

And that's the problem most folks have. They can't ( or won't ) grasp the mindset that these zealots were dealing with, in taking as many innocent lives as they possibly could. It's like calling the Phelps clan from Westboro Baptists 'brave', for standing up to so many heathens and wicked folks. I think most here ( I certainly would ) call them anything BUT brave, because they're working under a completely different world view than the rest of us. THEY see themselves as doing god's work. Others see them as merely hateful, evil scum of the earth.

As Obi Wan said... " many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.".

Hello,

The truth is, it all depends on what's going on in the mind of the person who is doing the deed, and no one can know that but the person doing it.

The person whose life is so miserable that he commits suicide as a way of escaping it? Probably not so brave.

The person who loves their life but makes the conscious decision to end it in such a way as to achieve some purpose they feel it vital? Probably more brave.

But nobody can know which of these is true from the outside of someone else's skull.

Riona, you're not suggesting that what the 9/11 attackers did to be only suicide, are you ? They weren't despondent or depressed, just wanting to end their own suffering. They were brainwashed , and wanted to take out as many other human beings as they possibly could. To die, and kill, for a delusion of eternal sex and glory, or some such nonsense.

Does that seem right to you?

At least the Heaven's Gate folks did themselves off, and didn't take out the rest of their neighbors.

As for the 'slut' part... I'm thinking back to what Inara said.

" I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend. "

Hello,

The term applies?

I fear you are implying, as he was, that any woman who might desire birth control is a slut.

Which is as terrible a view towards women as I can imagine.

It reminds me of mention that condoms are freely available by conservative groups.

Which further implies that if a man controls reproduction (by wearing a condom) it is acceptable.

But if a woman controls reproduction, or shows a desire to do so, she is to be maligned.

Not for the first time, Mr. Raptor, you have tested the bounds of my civility.

Hello,

Sometimes it is important to remind myself why I have made the decisions I've made. I was re-reading 'Animal Farm' the other day, and one of the tricks the Pigs used in the book was to declare that something everyone remembered was merely imagined. It didn't happen that way. Time has clouded your recollections. In fact, it happened the opposite way. And anyone who says differently is a lying traitor.

But it did happen that way. It wasn't imagined.

It was real.

And it was terrible.

Yep, and I remember it as well too. Of course, this is completely taken out of context, ( yet again ) as the entire drama was over blown and purely for political reasons, by the Democrats.

The Dems ( using Fluke as a poster chick ) wanted free birth control, or at least govt mandated free stuff from insurance companies, no matter what.

Rush humorously suggested that, if you're gonna want free birth control, it implies you want others to basically pay for you to have sex. Usually, when you're given something, it's expected that something else is given in return. 'Payment', as it were. To which Rush then made his vulgar joke, ( being absurd to demonstrate absurdity ) , which sent everyone into a hissy fit.

On the actual issue, of folks expecting free stuff and offering nothing in return, I agreed w/ Rush. I even laughed a bit at his joke, at the ridiculous implication. Sorry, it was funny. Too nonsensical to be believed he was being SERIOUS. Yet, some still don't get humor, I guess. No big deal.

Just because you want something and feel that it's such an insurmountable burden to actually go out and pay for it yourself, doesn't mean you have the right to go running off to big Gov and cry until they force those big bad mean insurance companies cave. It's horrifying that politically motivated groups can get the govt to do their bidding, and force private companies to jump through their PC hoops.

And Anthony is STILL milking this, for all its worth.

And for that, he's a pile of go-se

Note to anyone - Anthony is a sack of go se, and will continue to be one until he removes that idiotic signature concerning his bald face lie about me, and what he claims I think about women. I'm due an apology from him.

Deny that it happened. Deny that you meant it. Deny that it was important. Try to make the other person feel crazy and wrong. Blame them for it.

There is a bully on the playground, pointing at a girl and calling her names.

There is a weak boy next to the bully, enjoying a good guffaw at the spectacle and echoing the insult.

Does it nullify my factual note to myself, of why responding to your posts is pointless. You are so far removed from my morality that you might as well be an alien, and pursuing further discourse with you would make me begin to hate you in a very destructive way.

This concludes my defense against your accusation of libel.

I get free medical insurance, Medicare, from the gov't.
Does that make me Bad . . . or just Old?

I believe the majority of people in the USA have "free" insurance
coverage either from work or the government. Shall I assume that
Rappy does not accept this as he doesn't approve of Free Stuff?

America loves a winner!

Your note is not factual. Not even remotely.

You continue ( possibly on purpose, I can't say for sure ) to miss the point and distort the entire issue.

I see, you're too much a coward to engage in discourse with me, but you're perfectly fine to hide little invisible notes to yourself.

I didn't run away, I didn't deny what I said, but go ahead and make up shit about those things as well. You're SO god damn good at that sort of stuff. Bravo!

Note to anyone - Anthony is a sack of go se, and will continue to be one until he removes that idiotic signature concerning his bald face lie about me, and what he claims I think about women. I'm due an apology from him.

My recollection is that when asked if women who want contraceptives covered by insurance are sluts, you replied with a quote from Inara that "the term applies."

In the Firefly episode, the term in question wasn't about sluts. It was about whores. In that context, your comments are actually more vitriolic than what Anthony is accusing you of. Is that your objection?

Or is this more that you think Anthony's signature implies that you condone women not having control over their reproductive processes in more like the manner of rape, in which I would agree you did not do?

That's Rappy for ya. His Holy Tubbyness, Rush, said the woman was a slut for thinking birth control (to control cysts) should be covered by medical insurance is a slut. Rappy says Rush is correct - but when this is repeated back, he claims its a lie. Its what he does.
It's all he does.
He will not stop.
Ever.
Until reason is dead.

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

Hello,

Well, the source material is here, in this thread. The Community is able to read it and make their own judgments as to whether Mr. Raptor has been misrepresented. I think I have been accurate, but anyway all the evidence is present and available for the individual to consider. ETA - The most important thing is that every time I post, a note appears on the screen to remind me that there is no profit in arguing with such a person.

Did you place odds on Don Imus when he called that women's basketball team "nappy headed ho's". He's still on the air and I believe taking a shot at a non-political entity was far more egregious.

I'll put a buck down that he's still on the air in 6 months. Even if he gets a slap on the wrist suspension, a la Imus or Schultz.

So, Frem, looks like you owe me $0.60. Or whatever 5 to 3 odds on a dollar works out to. It's been 6 months since my post and Rush Limbaugh is still on the air.

Which adequately proves my point about the attention span of the American public.

Just browsing through the old posts to find this one was an eye opener on all of the "cause celeb" that has come and gone in 6 months.

Well, had you read KPO's Predictions thread, you'd have known I already called that one.
And not being a weasel like most of our so-called-conservative posters here, I stand to it, hell I am even good for it if you want the five bucks so bad (twas basically $5 vs $3) that you're willing to figure an anonymous way to exchange it.

I tend to make some pretty good bank on the side elsewhere via political bets, but then when so many of the issues or races are fixed and you occasionally have inside information that ain't too hard.
Nobody has 100% accuracy, but I tend to beat the curve by a damn wide margin, usually.

For mine own, I wonder if some part of that whole mess involved Rotten Limbergers handlers loading him up on Oxy and locking him in a closet somewhere so as to keep his flapping trap from sinking him deeper while they did damage control.

It's still costing sponsors however, cause some folk tend to bear a grudge.

Yup, Frem's right.

...second-quarter revenue from 10 stations owned by Cumulus Media (Nasdaq: CMLS) declined due to the boycott, CEO Jim Dickey said. Indeed, Dickey said in a conference call, lower sales at three of his 10 flagship talk radio stations cost $5.5 million. Moreover, the Cumulus CEO anticipated the drag on business to continue for at least six months and as long as a year.

Virtually all of Limbaugh's technology advertisers have stopped sponsoring him except for private LifeLock Inc. Lately, more advertisers including Sam's Club, part of No. 1 retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT), said it will withdraw from Limbaugh's show, along with eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) and local advertisers on some of his flagship stations such as WABC in New York. http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/374036/20120815/rush-limbaugh-boycott-

When I first noted Sears' withdrawal, some snarked "who cares about Sears"? Wellll, Wal-Mart and eBay are just a teeeny bit bigger, and losing $5.5 million is nothing to sneeze at.

Lew Dickey, the CEO of Cumulus, was speaking to financial analysts about his companies' results. The boycott had "hit us pretty hard."

It's the first time any sort of monetary figure has been given about the impact of the boycott. Cumulus is also a relatively small player where Limbaugh is concerned, airing his show on just 38 stations around the country. Dickey's comments could mean that companies that have a bigger stake in Limbaugh's show were hit harder. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/09/rush-limbaugh-cumulus-ad-boyc

Rush will probably always be around. There are far too many rabid right wingers out there who desperately need someone to spew their hate for them. But at least he's costing them money, which is nice...

Yeah, last we heard from you, it was as if the nation were going to collapse in a giant Fast-n-Furious scandal and the AG would be frog-marched off to prison by Darrell Issa.

How'd that all work out?

Nah, not the point. I think the country has a 30/60/90 day memory for controversy. Maybe it's just limited tolerance for the same stories.
