(on the left there's a tall tower with a pointed lighted roof. look just to the right of it)

At the time this picture was taken there were not warnings of any kind in effect. Not NWS's finest moment.

Hello,

I deeply appreciate the presence of mind and self-control it took to say, "Holy Smoke" and not any of the other things that I might have said in his place.

Oh don't even get me STARTED on the abysmal failures of the NWS - State Police has to hire people to look out the window and report on weather around here cause they really are THAT unreliable.
(what rooks me worst is they go back to edit their "forecast" to reflect what actually happened hours after the fact and then crow about how "accurate" they were/are.)

And we do get the occasional tornado, usually southwest of here in unpopulated or sparsely populated areas although one did hit Monroe a while back - the "Tornado Spotted" sirens are sounded not only in the direct path but surrounding areas cause them suckers are unpredictable, and are one of the extreme few things that will drive me off a round in progress, although what protecting the buildings here might offer is dubious at best...
But if I DIDN'T take cover I'd never hear the bloody end of it from my people, one of the office nicknames for me is Terminator cause once I start a round I ALWAYS finish it, barring three events, those being the aforementioned siren, snow in excess of 36" or a complete balls-up requiring immediate security attention - hell I once did rounds with a triple digit fever and delerium, which I don't even REMEMBER despite properly listing all issues and nonfunctioning lights.

Then there was the lightning strike which hit one of our few overhead lines near building 12 WHILE I was punching the key behind it, KA-WHAMMM,fzzzzz, seriously that one was so close I could literally TASTE it from the ozone, and it melted the line causing a brownout, which is rare her cause we're near on top of the substation and most of our lines are underground - I've been lectured a time or two by the property manager for not taking cover during serious electrical storms but the chance of a direct hit is vanishingly small and situations like that are when I am needed out there the most in case we do lose power and people need assistance cause of it.

And of course the howling wind, which can catch up in strange ways between the buildings and reach some pretty impressive velocities often sufficient to knock me right on my ass, which injures naught but my pride since I have an armored/insulated jumpsuit with tool belt and clips which folks jokingly accuse me of having looted from Batmans closet, heh.

Plus snow and rain of course, I had to upgrade my rain gear after one storm where it came down so hard it was like being pelted with gravel, it literally punched through the top layer and saturated the underlayer causing them to seperate and the force with which it was hitting then started ripping the damn thing to shreds, I've since replaced it with a rainsuit designed for bowhunting in heavy brush which is more durable but yick it gets hot and icky inside that thing after a while.
And hail, sometimes, ranging from pin-pebbles to half-inch and commonly wind-driven with surprising force.

In fact the weather conditions you see in the video are prettymuch an average night for me (save for the lightning/thunder) 5-6 months of the year, a couple inches of snow and temps around 5F to -20F with light to medium wind with really poor visibility for folks who can't see in the dark as well as me.

Ain't just savin money which has me doin rounds too, I really do love the work, especially when the weather makes it challenging to do well - although I do pay a hefty cost for such exertions.

Of course, this does me no good trying to convince my family that Michigan isn't within spitting distance of the north pole and populated with crazy neo-vikings...

PS. And yes, being a weatherman around here requires pretty steady nerves, oh indeedy.

Eight, nine inches or so over 2-3 days, most of which just melted off when the sun came up anyways, but of course the locals got damp undies about it and there were many wrecks.

What stuns me is that they whinge and whine so much, this is MICHIGAN, it does snow every year, helll-Ooooo?
And for MI, this winter has been downright insultingly mild besides.

I just don't comprehend folks who move here and then complain about the cold, wind and snow, I mean where the hell did they think they were moving TO, Ecuador ?

Only think what rooks me worse is folks who've lived here years and STILL have no bloody clue how to drive in snow (or at all, some of em, for that matter), seriously how does that make sense ?
