Report: Millions of jobless file for disability when unemployment benefits run out

Being unemployed for too long reportedly is driving people mad and costing taxpayers billions of dollars in mental illness and other disability claims.

The New York Post reported Sunday that as unemployment checks run out, many jobless are trying to gain government benefits by declaring themselves unhealthy.

More than 10.5 million people -- about 5.3 percent of the population aged 25 and 64 -- received disability checks in January from the federal government, the Post wrote, a 18 percent jump from before the recession.

Among those claiming disability, 43 percent are asking for benefits because of mental illness, the Post wrote. A growing number of those people are older, former white-collar workers.

Disability claims come from the Social Security Trust Fund, which is set to go broke in 2018. Congress last week agreed to dip into the revenue stream to give a 2-percentage point tax break to working Americans.

The Post noted that the more people file for disability claims, the better for the unemployment picture since those people are removed from the jobless rolls.

As class envy & entitlement are promoted by this administration, hell, MOST politicians today, who can blame them?

Feeding @ the public trough is seen more as a right than the rare exception. Just as some want it to be.

Want more Obama bliss ?

$640,000 of govt "stimulus spending " for a 100% completely useless smart phone app.

Quote:

Have you ever been standing outside in your garden and wondered if it was hot out?

If you are confused by that statement, congratulations! You’re not a cyborg.

However the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has made an app that is apparently made for robots who are unable to feel temperature, and as such must be told that it is hot (or cold) out by another machine.

This app, for Android, Blackberry and iPhone markets, legitimately takes your location, reports the temperature, and then gives a rating. For example, 80 degrees Fahrenheit registers as having a high heat index, also known as “it’s hot”.

I know that in this day and age it has become the norm to rely on gadgets, be they Smartphones, tablets, computers or even cars, to give us information without having to search very far. However there are some things that as humans we are always capable of doing, and one of which is our ability to perceive temperature.

If you are standing in the snow in a bathing suit and flip-flops, and you need your phone to tell you that it’s cold outside and that you should be wearing a jacket and boots, call 911.

Unfortunately for those of us who aren’t temperature-impaired, there is yet another downside to this moronic excuse for an app. It cost taxpayers (yes, that means you) over $640,000 to ensure that this app became fully operational, which is quite a lot of money when you consider that the app is about as operational as a broken flashlight.

$640,000+ dollars to create an app that tells you what you already know. Why don’t they have one that, while you eat, it sends you a message to let you know that you have started eating. Or perhaps, when you touch a fleece blanket, to text you letting you know it’s soft.

This is absolutely infuriating, especially because that money was funded by hard-working Americans who would like to see their tax dollars go towards programs that help improve their lives, not a downloadable application that has less use than a paddle-ball toy.

You would think the DOL would have learned how to make a fully functioning app seeing as how their first attempted failed miserably in almost every category.

Maybe one day they will give up on their futile app-making career and concentrate on their actual jobs. It would be better for all of us.

My iPhone came with a weather app. I have 4 other weather apps , all free, which can tell me what the weather is like, all across the country. All were free. And yet our govt needed 640,000 dollars of OUR tax money... why? This is the b.s. that govt, that THIS administration dreams up to create, save or affect jobs.

Yup, clearly they could have saved that $640,000 and put it into the kitty with another trillion or more and used that to launch yet more useless, immoral, and illegal wars in order to create and protect jobs, right?

Right?

By the way, remind us all why you defended Michelle Bachmann taking welfare from the "feeding trough" of public money for her foster kids, her husband's pray-away-the-gay clinic, and her family's farm.

Oh yeah - your claim was that they were entitled to the money because they'd done nothing wrong, and it was "legal" to take it.

So is disability now something you're claiming should be "illegal"?

Hello,

Upon conducting independent research, it appears that this is an OSHA related app designed to tell employees if it is too hot outside, and what precautions they should take against the heat outside.

Which is both of dubious value, and not what was described in your article above.

I think everyone will be happier and doing better when we have more jobs and a better economy, then they won't be as likely to need Disability in such large numbers. The thing is that right now employers have their pick, so people who do struggle with stuff are less likely to be the ones picked.

Clearly the Republicans will NOT be happy, because we have more jobs and a better economy right now, and it's improving faster than was expected.

Which is precisely why none of the GOP candidates want to talk about the economy now. ;)

Really? The economy is improving faster than expected ? Despite the fact that unemployment wasn't suppose to even get above 8.0 % if we passed the 875+ BILLION dollar stimulus bill, and it still soared up past 9.0 % ?

And yes, the GOP are talking about it, so right there, we have not just 1, but 2 ridiculous statements by Kwickie in 1 posting. Bravo!

( Were I like others on this board, I'd say you're LYING, but I refuse to sink to that level )

Employment Dev Dept, State of California:
October 2011, California's unemployment rate decreased to 11.7% vs 12.5% the year before.
October 2011, US unemployment rate decreased to 9.0%

CA employable ppl have been taking gas here. About half of 'em should move to L.A. (wearing an oxygen supply or
air filter, of course) and get jobs in Hollywood where new talent is needed.

My own theory of curing unemployment woes in lieu of disappearing jobs is for more ppl to start businesses and
hire all their unemployed friends. Seriously.
