" If I don't get this done in 3 years, then there's gonna be a one - term proposition "

3 years ago today, Obama made this bold claim.

( video not showing up here, check out beta )

Hey, he set the terms himself.

We agree to those conditions.

YOU'RE FIRED !

Right. He's the only Prez in history to have made a campaign promise that didn't come true. Gotcha.
Quote:

During the 2000 presidential campaign, George W. Bush promised voters that he would rescue Social Security when he became president. Four years later, they’re still waiting.
Quote:

If elected, the United States will have the first permanent base on the moon by the end of his second term, Gingrich promised at a campaign stop Wednesday in Cocoa, Fla. He also promised a rocket capable of reaching Mars in eight years.
And on and on.

It was grandiose of him to think he could solve the worst budget deficit since WWII ($413 billion, remember?). Naive? Yes. I think if he'd had the help of Congress, a whole lot more could have been accomplished. Whatever Obama's plans MIGHT have been, he obviously didn't take into account a governing body who would make it their sole aim and purpose to obstruct anything and everything, caring entirely about making him a one-term President rather than caring anything about the country. However he may have failed, he only gets half the blame, in my opinion.

I guess it's up to the people whether they want to hold him to that statement (NOT a promise, notice); we WILL see in November, and I'm afraid it looks at this point like you're going to have fodder for another four years of obsession. But go right ahead, keep focusing on putting up useless posts dissing anything even slightly left of your viewpoint, it keeps you happy if nothing else. I'm happy you're happy. Just wish you'd find things of more interest and more nuanced, but that's just me.

What 'facts' are confounding me again ?

Bush made an effort,( though half-hearted, imo ) to deal w/ the very real crisis that is facing SSI. He couldn't get Congress to go along w/ him, and so naturally, his plan never got any traction. He tried, at least.

Newt's IDEA , of a base on the moon, is visionary, at least. I'm glad someone is at least looking forward to mankind getting off this rock, and to the moon seems like a logical first step. Not real sure what 'facts' I'm missing here.

But, in typical far Leftist manner, the point is dutifully being obfuscated, dodged and ignored. Obama made the claim, that if he couldn't improve matters, he deserved to be voted out of office. I submit, based on THE FACTS, that the public hold him to his word.

Storybook, YOU seem to be wanting to choose your own facts.

And Niki, Obama DID have the help of Congress. Both House and Senate belonged to the Democrats, for 2 years, as he entered office. ObamaCare ? Passed. Govt control of the student loan programs Passed. Nearly a trillion $ in Recovery and Reinvestment Act ? Passed. Govt take over of GM ? Cash for Clunkers ? Financial Institution reform ? These and so much more were achieved under Obama's 1st term, and the results speak for themselves.

Yes they do.

The economy slowly recovering, but recovering none the less. Health Care will be more affordable and avalible for more people in the future, it is working in Mass. Student Loans which will now make that tax payers money instead of banks. GM is profitable again, and all those jobs where saved. Cash for Clunkers gave a boost to the economy and helpped keep some car dealerships open and people in jobs. Financail reform is a good start to prevent the banks and wallstreet from tanking the economy again.

So...looks like he did pretty damn well!

One critical point that Newt and every other so-called "small government conservative" is dodging and ignoring: Which corporations are going to build this hypothetical Moon base? Which banks are going to finance it? What private company is building the rockets, with no assistance, contracts, or subsidies from the government?

Because the one thing you can bet your bottom dollar on (if you call yourself a conservative, that is) is this: It CANNOT be done by government. That's gospel for so-called conservatives: government can't do anything, has never created a single job (including the job of the presidency, one presumes, which these yahoos are all scrambling to get), and has no business spending this kind of money.

NYSE isn't the economy though. That's a complete red herring, Kwickie. It's just one aspect of economic activity. You ignore all the other items, and focus on just that ONE, which has its own natural recovery pattern built into it. Where have Obama's polices shown to add in this recovery ?

Storybook - When you say h-care WILL BE less expensive, because of ObamsCare , when it's only gone up since it was passed, isn't a "fact", it's a talking point.

Maybe some day you'll learn the difference.

Those other items show that the economy is getting betters as well.

There is no natural pattern of recovery.

Why should I expect anything else other than some juvenile, idiot response from you with this idiotic 'butthurt' remark.

Actually Rappy, yours is the talking point, as significant portions of the cost reduction calculated in ObamaCare kicks in after the programs are running in full in 2014 w the health care insurances exchanges running, and some of the other provisions.

U are correct when you state that health care costs have gone up. Im quite confident you either dont know or wont admit what the reason for that is: Insurance companies have jacked up their rates before the more restrivtive provisions on yearly increases and barring of coverage denial have come on line, most of which is scheduled for 2014.

GM payed back the cash loan they were given by the government. The government also bought a large sum of stock, which it still owns. Which the government coudl sell if it wanted to.

BHM - govt regulated 'cost reduction ' measures will, unquestionably, increase costs and limit availability. You claiming otherwise is itself a talking point. It comes down to, yes, simple math. There are x number of doctors able to provide services for the population. When you artificially raise the number of visitors to a limited number of doctors, cost will go up, and care will go down. Period, end of discussion.

ETA - Also, you speak of the full measures not kicking in until '14 ? There are also a lot of doctors who are already in the process of closing their doors and retiring, rather than deal w/ the bureaucratic nightmare that will be O-Care, should it ever be fully implemented.

Think DMV meets the VA Hospitals, and you've got O-Care.

The health care reforms does not change anything for doctors as far as their paperwork. Don't agree, cite the changes from the reform. You fail there.

Everyone in this country get some type of health care now. Even those who can't afford it still get care when needed. Demaind will decrease over time because it is a lot easier to deal with things before people have to got to emergency rooms. You fail again.

Sadly for your argument, I have multiple doctors in the family.

U have no idea the hassles doctors deal with from insurance companies, and how much their costs have increased from drug companies.

The insurance cos. dont pay, or they dont pay on time, or they dont pay what they say they will. They restrict what treatments can be offerred to certain patients.

Its a nightmare. The doctors u cite as closing up shop? They r doing it because they can no longer compete as small practices because of the cost and difficulty they experience when they are getting squeezed between Big Pharma and Big Insurance. General practic physicians are rapidly becoming a thing of the past, and this is pre-Obamacare, not post.

The Affordable Care Act cleans up some of these problems, but sadly not all of them.

The doctors in my family are very eagerly awaiting some of these provisions to SIMPLIFY their paperwork and payment processess.

Yeah, GM stocks versus loans etc.

Look, I don't even like Obama, I think he has been and all his policies will be disasterous. But I'm looking for what is immediately evident in the economy that suggests the fault of his policies. Unemployment? Business Growth? What specifically are you talking about?

I think that except for the bailouts, which wasn't all Obama, Obama has done nothing that has impacted the economy, for positive or negative. He's a pretty worthless president IMO. The economy has done its own thing, as per usual, and it's almost some kind of magical thinking for anyone to believe they have any influence over it. The only thing I think anyone can do including government and business is keep down the debt, don't cheat the system, and don't make business models based on some concept of money for nothing. But you don't notice the positive effects from that, you only notice the negative effects if they don't.

So funny, watching you guys hit them with facts and he/they dodge and weave. Glad you're enjoying yourselves...realizing full well he/they'll NEVER admit to any of them. Ignoring the fact that insurance companies have jacked their prices enormously in expectation of Obamacare being complete (gee, wasn't that all OVER the news a while back? I know it was in California, where we got major jack-ups of costs), and all the other dodges and weaves...amusing. For a minute or two at least.

Just wanted to pop in to say I heard the actual clip last night, and Obama didn't PROMISE...he said that IF he didn't get all this fixed, it would probably turn out to be a one-term Presidency. In other words, he didn't say he'd quit, he said he'd probably lose a second term...which it looks like, at this point, he won't. We may be in deep shit with Israel/Iran, numbers may go up and down, but what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander:

Volt sales fall in January

By David Shepardson
Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington- General Motors extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt had its worst sales month since August, as negative publicity over fire risks hurt vehicles sales in January.

GM sold just 603 Volts - above its sales in January 2011, but far below GM's best-ever sales month in December, when GM sold 1,529 Volts.

Last week, GM North America President Mark Reuss said sales of the Volt have been hurt by bad publicity. (Yeah it had to be the bad publicity, it couldn't be that by and large people just don't want the cars. But Central Planning says to keep on building them.)

Reuss said bad publicity from the government's investigation into fire risks of post-crash Volts is "definitely a component" of the decline in sales.

GM sold about 7,700 in 2011, below GM's target of 10,000. GM abandoned its sales target of 45,000 for 2012 last month, saying it would match "supply to demand."

GM was outsold by Nissan Motor Co.'s all-electric Leaf in 2011, as the Japanese automaker sold nearly 9,700 last year. Nissan said it sold 676 Leafs in January, down from 954 in December.

Nissan hopes to double Leaf sales this year.

Reuss said that when GM restarts production in February at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant, it will build Volts in a "very reasonable" volume. He said there is some pent-up export demand.

Reuss says Volt awareness has gone up over the last two months in the wake of publicity over the government's investigation.

GM is focused on rehabilitating the Volt's reputation. "It's a tough road, but we've got to do it," Reuss said.

Last week, Congress held a hearing into the Obama administration's handling of disclosure of a fire in a crash-tested Volt. GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson testified at that hearing. He said the Volt is safe, and that the Volt has become "a political punching bag." He said the Volt has suffered "collateral damage" because of two months of rentless bad publicity.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration closed its investigation into the Volt in January after finding no unreasonable risk to safety. GM has agreed to make some voluntary upgrades to the Volt to guard against fires in post-crash Volts, but stopped short of issuing a formal recall.

Yep, must be that people just don't want electric cars of any kind.

Oh, wait...

Huh. Now how can that be?

From a technology/practicality standpoint, the Volt *seems* to make better sense, but it's also more complicated. It has a gas engine and electric motors, where the Leaf has no gas engine at all. The Prius, Volt, and Leaf offer three very different approaches to alt-energy transportation. The Prius uses electric power to start off from a stop, but once you hit 10 or 15 mph, or if you floor it, the gas engine kicks in. So if you're a hot-foot, your mileage is going to suffer and you'll never gain much advantage over a gas-only vehicle.

The Leaf, at the other end of the spectrum, only runs on battery power. No matter what you do, it won't burn gas. However, if you hot-foot it, you're not going to get very far, because its range is severely limited under extreme driving conditions. If you have a 500-mile trip in your future, the Leaf is going to take more than a couple days to cover it.

The Volt purports to offer the best of both worlds. Around town, most of the time, it runs on batteries. If you deplete the batteries through long drives or spirited driving, the gas engine kicks in. But as I understand it, the gas engine isn't connected to the wheels; it serves ONLY as a generator to charge the batteries, which can also be charged by plugging into an outlet. So if you take it easy and only use the car on short-to-medium commutes, you could conceivably only have to fill up with gas once or twice a year. However, if you have a long trip, the gas engine will absolutely give you the extended range to make the distance, and you might even have to stop and fill up along the way.

For someone like me, the Volt would be a nearly perfect fit, but as with most new technologies, I ain't buying anytime soon. Let the other folks be the beta testers and guinea pigs; I'll buy when they get the kinks worked out.

And it may turn out that the Volt is just a dud. It might not grab peoples' fancy the way the Prius did, or the Miata a generation ago. People are fickle, and you never really know what's going to become a hit and what's not.

But either way, GM is still the # 1 carmaker in the world, and slow sales of the Volt don't seem likely to hurt that position.

Incidentally, looking into some sales numbers from another specialty/niche GM car, I see the ZR1 Corvette sells at about a quarter the rate of the Volt - less than 2000 units per year. So that car's obviously a miserable failure as well, I take it.

Volt sales more than double, marking its best sales month to date, much to the chagrin of everyone on the right, who were hoping for economic failure. Chevy Volt outsells Chevy's V8 performance flagship, the Corvette.

Sales of General Motors cars, trucks, and utilities jumped 11.8 percent in March to 231,052 units, thanks to models like the Chevrolet Malibu and Equinox.
In fact, Chevrolet had the best growth of any GM brand, edging up 16.8 percent to 173,073 sales. Only one other brand, GMC, was positive; that brand jumped 12.2 percent to 34,337 units. Cadillac was down 13.4 percent to 10,537 units, and Buick sales dropped 16.3 percent to 13,105 units.
So what was hot (and not so hot) in March? Here’s a quick rundown.
Most Improved
Chevrolet Volt: Chevrolet’s biggest percentage increase came from its Volt extended-range electric vehicle. The EREV Volt jumped some 276.5 percent last month; with sales totaling 2289 units, March marked its best sales month to date. With the recent jump, the Volt now outsells another of Chevy’s iconic low-volume models: the Corvette.

Clearly nobody wants the Corvette. Well, nobody without chest-hair implants, a Viagra addiction, and a pinky ring...

Oh, and the Volt outsold the Nissan Leaf by nearly 4 to 1 in the latest sales figures.

Dragging this old crap out to update it with signs the economy is doing better is a waste of time; our righties' minds are locked and no facts will change that.

As to change, however, I happened to glance at the first post when I clicked on this thread. Memory may be failing me, but I'm almost positive when it was posted that it read something like Obama had PROMISED, which I believe I corrected...now it reads that he made the "claim". Nice editing.

The fact is the economy has improved steadily since Obama's policies went into effect. The economy is still fragile, and we don't know where it will be come elction time. Maybe it would be in better shape if the stimululs was done right, or if any number of the things Obama or the dems tried to get through Congress had been allowed to do their job. But the only thing we CAN know, for absolute certainty, is that if a Republican wins the White House and the Ryan budget is adopted, we are head for the shitter faster than you can say "failure"!

It took me a very long time to accept the fact that the Republicans actually WERE working to make the recovery worse and last longer so they could take the White House in 2012--I fought believing it tooth and nail. But even I had to accept it in the end, their actions were so transparent and when they clearly said their primary focus was defeating Obama--a President who, whatever else you think of him, was trying to dig us out of an enormous hole Republicans and Bush put us in--rather than working with him to improve the country, I was forced to accept that actually was their true purpose. It was a pretty rude awakening for someone as cynical as even I'd become about politics, let me tell you.]

So I give Obama credit for trying, and we'll see where it goes from here. The economy isn't back on track yet, efforts are still underway to further improve it, and we'll be in horrific shape if the Ryan budget gets through, that's all I know. I fully expect that if Obama is re-elected, the right will continue to try and drag us down in hopes of winning in 2016, and that both terrifies me and makes me sick to my stomach.

U.S. Jobless Claims Drop to 357,000; Lowest in 4 Years

The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment benefits fell to a four-year low last week, as layoffs slow and the job market strengthens.

Weekly applications dropped 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 357,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. That’s the fewest since April 2008.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell to 361,750, also the lowest in four years. The average has fallen nearly 13 percent in the past six months. More at http://business.time.com/2012/04/05/u-s-jobless-claims-drop-to-357000-
