"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Boy, these guys on the right sure are some smart fellers. Here's Rick Perry last night after the latest GOP sales pitch:

Quote:

“Our Founding Fathers never meant for Washington, D.C. to be the fount of all wisdom. As a matter of fact they were very much afraid if that because they’d just had this experience with this far-away government that had centralized thought process and planning and what have you, and then it was actually the reason that we fought the revolution in the 16th century was to get away from that kind of onerous crown if you will,” Perry said.”

HKCAVALIER

Okay, that's just dumb. If he'd said "17th century" he'd have made the common schoolboy mistake of seeing "1776" and thinking "17th century," but 16th??? So we fought the Revolutionary War against Queen Elizabeth the First? And we won??? lol But hell, Perry was a C and D student at college, so what can ya expect?

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It doesn't matter. A lack of historical knowledge is not why this candidate is a bad idea. He would not be one iota a better candidate if he knew the dates down to the day and hour. It doesn't even represent some special insight into his character. I think probably the majority of Americans would hear his proclamation about the century and not even blink. I don't think that says anything special, either. It's both unimportant to what he was saying and unimportant in general. The man has clearly and 'correctly' phrased positions that disturb me far more than this.

I think we can all agree that this is a goofier mistake than getting quotes from the Constitution and the Declaration of Independance confused.

Maybe Martin Luther was involved in that there Revolution too, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Spanish Armada. :) and look out for Henry VIII and all of his six wives, because this is a family affair, and pretty soon Cortes and Pizarro will come marching in and ... wow, a lot of stuff happened in the 1500s/16th century.

I think this last debate added another 20 tons to an already sinking Rick Perry ship. I think the only question about him is when does he drop out? How long before his ego gives way to what's happening? He looked like he was in pain in those debates, completely out of his comfort zone.

I'll give him a pass on this as long as he just says it was a mistake and moves on. If he somehow tried to defend it, that is another story.

Yep. They're probably laughing at him in all 57 states Obama visited during his campaign.

I know everyone on the right loves this slip-up, and wheels it out everytime they have to defend one of their own - but really it's so weak...

It's clear that he meant to say 47, and he never said 'all':

Quote:

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/barackobama/a/57_states.htm

See it's evident from the quote itself that Obama knows there are 50 states (evident from the real quote, not the 'all 57 states' one).

Is it clear at all that Rick Perry knows when the US revolutionary war happened? Or that Sarah Palin knows the difference between North and South Korea? It's anyone's guess.

Meanwhile the best you guys have on Obama is this...

It's not personal. It's just war.

Obama used those 'secret' states' electoral votes to secure the win. McCain and his people didn't even notice, as they were too busy taking notes to later blame Sarah Palin for everything, and getting MSNBC gigs lined up to be their post-defeat Republican 'experts.'

I think I see what you're saying but being an conservative I'm way to dumb to see the subtleties of your argument. If I have it right you're saying that it's obvious that when a liberal misspeaks its just a slip of the tongue but if a conservative does they are almost certainly stupid. Libs in the US have been pushing that same old line for most of my life but it still makes me chuckle that they cant resist dragging it out to boast their weak self esteem. I think conservatives should just concede that liberals are smarter for the mental health of our liberal friends, if its so important that all accept their rightful mental superiority I think we should accept it as fact and move on.

Nope. I did. Obama said (as you note), "I’ve now been in 57 states?". I just suggested that folks are laughing at Perry in all 57 states Obama claimed to have been in.

Actually, Obama didn't say there were 57 states.

"I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it."

If he'd been in 57, with one to go, plus Alaska and Hawaii, he's really claiming 60 states.

When Liberals are faced with their politicians making speaking gaffes, instead of conservative pols, I'm thinking the phrase "You can dish it out, but you can't take it" applies.

Exactly, he's out by 10 - that's how it's obvious that he meant to say 47 not 57.

Well where you differ from me? Do you think it's possible Obama thought there were 60 states, or are you certain that Rick Perry knows which century the revolutionary war was fought?

I think they both made a mis-statement.

What's interesting to me is how you can be so insulting about Perry's mistake, and get so defensive aboyt Obama's.

If it's okay to make fun of Perry's gaffe, why not Obama's?

It's not just weak, KPO, I'm really tired of it. You'd think they'd have come up with some new material...how far back is that one? And that's for the actual quote, I only heard about it here and assumed it was correct, 'cuz everyone makes slip-ups. But they don't seem to have anything more recent, and that one is so old and tired, but they keep trotting it out...

You know what I'd like? I'd like to see some examples of misspelled signs at Occupy demonstrations...it was such fun to see the ones all the Tea Partiers did...but I don't seem to find any. I THOUGHT I had when I found this: , but sadly, no such luck...

Did find a comment that says it for me:
Quote:

you are seeing the difference between educated individuals and trailer park rednecks who believe everything they are told.....my favorite...every hick thought Obama would take their guns when he was elected...and yet....he has been so pro gun he is ticking off the people behind the Brady Law....dumb dumbs....

Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm happy to make fun of ANYONE's gaffes But, what with Palin, Bachman, Perry, etc., as the slate of candidates, there are just so MANY, it's hard to resist.

I think you're probably right; I think I was underestimating the scale of ignorance required for an American to not know the century of the American War of Independence - those dates are probably the first thing you guys learn in history at school. For some reason that didn't occur to me...

In that case yes, this gaffe is about on a par with Obama's.

Quote:

I think a significant portion of conservatives believe that Obama actually said "all 57 states", and that he meant it. So from my point of view it doesn't hurt to throw the truth out there once in a while.

I was thinking maybe he made the mistake because so many forget that 1776 is actually the 18th century, and he reversed the concept, thinking it was a century EARLIER rather than LATER. I have trouble remembering to go FORWARD a century sometimes...maybe he remembered it wrong.

Yeah, that occurred to me too. Like he's said '17th Century' before and been told that that was wrong, and he was out by a century - but then he forgot in which direction...

It struck me as a strange mistake. Obama's slip up is more understandable, people are used to saying '50 states', and so that fifty slipped in and replaced the forty in his head.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I agree that the 57 states bit is bandied about too often, especially considering that it was a while ago, it was funny for a while but I'm sure President Obama has produced some sort of new material since then that people could find humorous, after all presidents are no longer orators, its been a while since we had a true orator for a president, so they all make goofy mistakes.

To solve a glitch in remembering to skip one ahead for centuries he could have just said the 1700s and saved himself a lot of trouble. Most people who have a hard time with that difference between numbers and century number just say the 1700s, or whatever time they're referring to so no one will know that they get those switches mixed up.
