Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I just stumbled across a sci-fi channel and have come across some pretty abysmal movies.

This is probably not the worst sci-fi movie ever, but I think Wyvern is the lamest Tremors ever.

Remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR and PBS crashed the stock market, wiped out half of our 401Ks, took trillions in taxpayer funded bailouts, spilled oil in the Gulf of Mexico, gave themselves billions in bonuses, and paid no taxes?

Yeah, me neither....

Oh, Kiki, welcome to "schlock sci-fi"! I watch almost all of them, trash tho' they may be, because it beats everything else on TV (most of the time) on Saturdays. They run them nonstop every Saturday, and Jim's favorite joke is "you can tell when it's Saturday, there are screams nonstop from the living room". Sometimes he even pauses when walking by, usually making a crack about "nobody's screaming!" or something.

I dead-head and prune my plants in front of the TV that day, and I actually ENJOY most of them, believe it or not! The majority are made-for-sci-fi channel movies. They usually have bad writing, low-budget special effects, LOTS of blood; bad acting, and they're funnier than hell. I've seen Wyvern twice now...and you missed the best one soon after: "Death Worms". It was a real keeper!! I admit there have actually been a few I haven't been able to take, but I love when they do the ones on 'quakes and volcanoes and stuff (they do "themes" every Saturday). I'll watch those happily all day. There is so little GOOD sci fi out there, and I gotta get my fix, bad as it may be. ;o)

And hey, don't knock "Tremors"--it was iconic! 'Death worms' beasties were much more like those in Tremors ('tho pathetically done and with no humor); but it DID have me swearing at the TV, parts of it were such a pathetically-obvious ripoff of Temple of Doom...they COULD have tried a bit harder to separate it, but then maybe it was intentional... I think they make quite a few of them as jokes, because ones like Wyvern are just too hysterical to be intended otherwise.

Sy-Fy Original Movies started in 2002(I think) and have been playing every Saturday night since. To be honest I really enjoy them. They are usually cheesy, fun (and yes, LOTS of screams) and complete time wasters. But they fill my Hercules/Xena void on Saturday nights from the days of yesteryear perfectly.

Everyone knows Grand Rapids

It's in the western part of the Frempire State.

Ha, that ain't why everyone knows where Grand Rapids is...

THIS is.

There's also Bad Axe michigan, which as I hear has an actual statue of Ash-from-housewares in it, heh, but that's up in the thumb.

Myself, I live in the "dead zone" between Detroit and Ann Arbor, a whole plethora of little podunk townships with a political structure which rides the line between wacky and downright insane.

Oh, yeah, and you know what we USE those boomsticks on ?
Mosquitos.

Seriously, they're friggin HUGE, half-inch long my ENTIRE ASS, maybe as babies - one of the committiee meetings up here about local issues, someone suggested anti-aircraft guns...
Nobody laughed.
They're THAT freakin big, okay ?

Too bad the bats found better hunting grounds, I've suggested we build them some nesting space but the property owner thinks having bat lairs might frighten some people, bleh - dude, have you SEEN these flippin skeeters ?

Thankfully, and with great irony, they don't bite me, I dunno why, either I don't taste very good or something about me doesn't appeal to em, but I rarely if ever get bit.

The weather is fine here. I am on the western side of Michigan though, so I think I'll be good.

I don't know why, either, but I'm the same way. Wife and I go outside to work in the yard, she gets bit about 30 times and I not at all. I keep telling her my blood is far too toxic for 'em.

I am also among the unbitten. We have those in New York as well, but only in the Adirondacks where no one lives. No humans. Very very few. It's a native Taiga species.

The bats died off, in a massive die off. White nose fungus. We went from thousands per building to zero. it's very sad. Saw one today. Spotting one is like spotting an owl now. It used to be like spotting something a lot more common than a pigeon.

Anyway, in the adirondaks what eats 'em is dragonflies. Really big dragonflies. Something primeval about all of this.

Uhhh, I know where all those mozzies that don't bite you guys go... to me. They see me comin' and think "ahhh, smorgasboard!" And I sleep outside, remember! Strangely, this year not so much...must be the cooler weather, 'cuz we got plenty of rain. I'm not complaining, mind you! Your wife has my deepest sympathy, believe me! I finally found a product that works great, and doesn't stink to high heaven. Didn't even have to use it this year!

DT, neat video. I actually DO know all the words to American Pie, even after all these years...along with dozens of other '60s hits. Now if I could just figure out how to remember my keys, sunglasses, cigarettes...

I admit that I do watch some of those scifi TV movies too, and I do enjoy some of them, some are so bad I don't really enjoy them but some are actually pretty cool, Thor: hammer of the gods being one of my favorite ones. I watched Mongolian Death Worms on Sat. Well actually I watched half of it on Sat. and taped the other half on VCR and finished it today. I have this thing about Mongolia/Genghis Khan so I had to watch it. It was pretty bad but worth watching once, I was perplexed at how few Mongolians/people of Asian extraction were in it. The thing that might interest DT is that fracking near the Great Khan's tomb is what woke the worms up. Anyways it was mediocre and kind of lame, but I've been wanting to give it a go for a while.

I saw Super Gator a couple of weeks ago, it was pretty lame but cheap amusement for two hours. The acting is pretty bad in these movies and so they're comical. I still haven't seen Wyvern, better check it out. :)

Mosquitos used to bite me a lot when I was a girl, but in my grown years they don't care for my blood as much.

"Yes" about the use of natives in the cast. I didn't tune in for the first fifteen minutes or so, and as a result, didn't know WHERE it was supposedly taking place. Eventually I got it, but it took a while, mostly because it looked like it was taking place somewhere in the US (gee, I wonder why?).

Hello,

I just thought of a good celebrity endorsement for the Syfy channel:
