In the aftermath of the twin attacks in Norway, there has been some strident criticism of the speed at which sections of the media linked the attacks to Islamic terrorism.

For example Britain's best-selling The Sun newspaper published a banner headline on Saturday describing the attack as an "Al Qaeda massacre: Norway's 9/11".

By the time the newspaper hit the streets Norwegian police had dismissed any links between the attacker and the jihadist group.

Critics say it is just one example of an entrenched anti-Muslim bias that has developed in the media since the September 11 attacks.

The Macquarie Dictionary defines a terrorist as someone who uses or favours terrorising methods of resisting a government or of governing.

So at first glance the alleged attacker in Norway, who killed at least 93 people and wounded nearly 100 more in Friday's attacks, seems to fit the bill.

His methods clearly terrorised and his message was overtly political.

But it seems the dictionary definition of a terrorist is no longer what is in common usage, at least in some sectors of the media.

"Particularly many of the tabloids and ... the tabloid news sites like to interpret mass acts of terrorism, mass violence, through the prism of Muslim terrorism," said Anthony McClellan, the principal of AMC Media.

"In other words [they assume] the only real big-style terrorists are Muslims. The brand of terrorism is totally linked in their minds to Muslims and what they do.

"The fundamental problem they had was that they got it wrong, which defeats the whole purpose of being accurate journalists and running an accurate media."

Mr McClellan, a former television current affairs reporter, says it is not only the tabloid media - the BBC and other organisations do it as well.

"I believe the Guardian probably engaged in speculation. I think it's more pronounced at the tabloid end," he said.

"But I think they're all guilty of it to that same degree because part of the problem is that those journalists or the editors putting up those headlines ... want to give a very simplistic interpretation of a complex world."

Mr McClellan is not alone in his criticism of the media's reaction.

Blogger and Brown University historian Shiva Balaghi described it as a shameful day for journalism and criticised journalists' reliance on so-called terrorism experts who she says "conduct research by Google" and "tweet a mile a minute".
Quick, simple news

Mr McClellan says the pressure to provide viewers, listeners and readers with a quick, simplistic interpretation has been intensified by the arrival of much more immediate online news and social media.

"It is a conscious effort at that end of the market to feed in what they think their readers want to believe and their prejudices," Mr McClellan said.

But there can be some unintended consequences, according to Julie Posetti, a journalism lecturer at the University of Canberra who has studied the impact of media coverage on Muslims.

"I think it was probably reasonable for people to ask questions about the likely nature of the attacks," she said.

"But asking questions and drawing conclusions and then fanning those conclusions without a skerrick of evidence was irresponsible.

"And more than irresponsible in terms of good journalism practice, it's potentially very damaging to Muslims and people of Muslim background around the world."

In the streets of Oslo on Saturday many Muslims worried the finger of blame would be pointed at them.

Some say they stayed at home, fearing they would suffer some form of reprisal.

"That doesn't surprise me," Ms Posetti said.

"Some of the research I've done has involved interviewing and surveying Muslim women in the Australian setting, particularly focusing on Muslim women.

"Those who adopt traditional Muslim dress, the hijab or the burka, for example, find themselves being ... the visual shorthand for Muslim and often are seen to represent - ridiculously - Islamic terrorism on the streets."
Oklahoma bombings

It is not the first time there has been a rush to judgment about who was behind a terrorist attack.

Waleed Aly, a lecturer in the Global Terrorism Research Centre at Monash University, draws comparisons to the reaction to the Oklahoma bombings.

"The Oklahoma City bombings in the United States in 1995 had a similar phenomenon happen where the media immediately came out and started talking about this as though it was likely to be a Middle Eastern plot," he said.

"What it does show is that the coupling of terrorism and Muslims in the public imagination and in the media discourse around terrorism is really solidly entrenched."

That is despite there being far fewer Islamic terrorist attacks each year than there are non-Islamic attacks.

"If you stop describing it as terrorism and you start describing it as being the work of a crazy madman, a lone gunman, as though we can we can kind of dismiss it or write it off as some kind of aberration, then we run into problems," Mr Aly said.

"We're unable to formulate meaningful analyses of terrorism because we just factor out all these important episodes. And really it just compromises our entire discourse and our policy response."

Ms Posetti says journalists simply have to do their job properly.

"It's about proportion and fact-checking and really the responsibility on journalists, which is where I come from, is to essentially provide context and explain and to challenge stereotypes," she said.

A new poll by Essential Media has found there has been a big slump in the public's trust of commercial media in recent months.

Mr McClellan says unless editorial standards rise substantially that trust will only erode further.

1. Norway has some of the most stringent gun control laws.

2. The only reason this guy stopped firing was because he was out of bullets.

3. The cops took over 2 hours to arrive.

4. Over 90 dead.

If even ONE other person there had a weapon, things might have been different.

Can't wait to see how this gets spun into needing MORE gun control.

Norway has a high level of gun ownership. They just have strict laws on licencing and how you keep them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Norway

Norway has a relatively low crime rate.

Magon's

Are you old enough to remember MAD (mutually assured destruction)? Yes, that was a happy time (not) - two countries armed to the teeth ready to annihilate or be annihilated at a moment's notice, death hanging over everyone at the whim of madmen or a result of a simple accident.

That is the society these people want, everyone armed to the teeth ready to annihilate or be annihilated at a moment's notice, death hanging over everyone at the whim of madmen or a result of simple accident.

That they WANT this thing, thinks it's GOOD speaks volumes about the mentality behind the vision.

Ok... heres the deal. You are free to go about your daily life, unarmed. Live your life, without a gun, as you see fit.

I, will go about my life, armed. Live my life as I see fit.

I won't force you to have a gun, and you cannot (even if you wanted to, and got the politicians to back you) force me not to.

To be unarmed is a choice you can make, while being armed is a choice I WILL make.

Thats about it.

See? You get to live your life, and I get to live mine, as we see fit to do so.

I won't bother to point out all the times you berated people for doing NOTHING just because they weren't going to go in to a situation guns blazing. Or about how guns were the solution to an illegitimate presidency. Or about how we were cowards for not joining in the armed revolt ready to happen any day now! You very much see guns as the ultimate solution to every problem on your horizon. And no, you are not nearly as live and let live 'to each his own' as you NOW want us to think you are.

Gee, sounds like our Tea Party.

This guy is nothing but a mentally screwed-up coward who'll go after kids. He wants attention, and unfortunately now he'll get it. The only thing I can say is that by his actions he will unite the country against all of his ilk. Not worth the price, but shows just exactly how far these right-wing extremists will go in their insanity. The pendulum will swing, it always does, it's just a shame how much damage these people do before they're stopped.

PN, all you're good for is making my scrolling finger sore. Your love of drama and horror is truly sad and I wish you could get some help. You have nothing to offer of any validity.

I'm not saying that TV stations lie, but reporting selected facts in a very specific order leaves an audience with a 'feeling'. It's the feeling that they work for, not becasue it is the truth, but you recall WHERE you got that 'feeling' ... ratings. Ratings equal viewers and viewers equal rates for commercial sales. It is quite clear that Ann Dunham, Obama’s mother, did indeed work and live in Pakistan as a consultant to the Asian Development Bank (ADB), working on a project in Gujranwalla. During this time, Barack Obama also visited his mother and stayed for a few months. Mrs. Ann Dunham was hired as a consultant by the Asian Development Bank for Pakistan Agricultural Development Bank's Gujranwalla Agricultural Development Program. This program began in 1987 and ended in 1992. Barack Obama visited Pakistan for longer than any U.S. President or presidential candidate ever has. As so many college students do, he seemed eager to see the world. He was in Karachi in 1981 as a young student, returning from a visit to his mother in Indonesia. According to a New York Times report: Mr. Obama also spoke about having traveled to Pakistan in the early 1980s. Because of that trip, which he did not mention in either of his autobiographical books, 'I knew what Sunni and Shia was before I joined the Senate Foreign Relations Committee,' he said.' According to his campaign staff, Mr. Obama visited Pakistan in 1981, on the way back from Indonesia, where his mother and half-sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, were living. In Dreams from My Father, he talks of having a Pakistani roommate when he moved to New York, a man he calls Sadik who “had overstayed his tourist visa and now made a living in New York's high-turnover, illegal immigrant work force, waiting on tables.' During his years at Occidental College, Mr. Obama also befriended Wahid Hamid, a fellow student who was an immigrant from Pakistan and traveled with Mr. Obama there, the Obama campaign said. Mr. Hamid is now a vice president at Pepsico in New York, and according to public records, has donated the maximum $2,300 to the Obama campaign and is listed as a fund-raiser for it. Of course, he was only 18 when he arrived at the small liberal arts college nicknamed 'Oxy.' His freshman roommates were Imad Husain, a Pakistani, who’s now a Boston banker. As a freshman, he quickly became friends with Mohammed Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, two wealthy Pakistanis. In 1981, Obama transferred from Occidental to Columbia. In between, he traveled to Pakistan – a trip that enhanced his foreign policy qualifications, he maintained in a private speech at a San Francisco fundraiser last month. Obama spent 'about three weeks' in Pakistan, traveling with Hamid and staying in Karachi with Chandoo’s family, said Bill Burton, Obama’s press secretary."

Norway shooting: Glenn Beck compares dead teenagers to Hitler youth
Glenn Beck, the leading Right-wing American broadcaster, has prompted outrage after comparing the teenage victims of the Utoya Island massacre to the Hitler Youth.

Beck said that the Labour party youth camp on the island, where 68 people were murdered, bore "disturbing" similarities to the Nazi party's notorious juvenile wing.

Beck, a multimillionaire darling of the Tea Party movement, said on his nationally-syndicated radio show: "There was a shooting at a political camp, which sounds a little like, you know, the Hitler youth. I mean, who does a camp for kids that's all about politics? Disturbing."

Torbjørn Eriksen, a former press secretary to Jens Stoltenberg, Norway's prime minister, described the comment as "a new low" for the broadcaster, who has frequently been forced to apologise for offensive remarks.

"Young political activists have gathered at Utoya for over 60 years to learn about and be part of democracy, the very opposite of what the Hitler Youth was about," he told The Daily Telegraph. "Glenn Beck's comments are ignorant, incorrect and extremely hurtful."

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, a Washington-based campaign group, said the remark by Beck, a free agent after being forced out of the Fox News channel earlier this year, was "absolutely disgusting".

Beck's controversial statements and conspiracy-filled rants have made him one of the most divisive figures in US politics and media in recent years.

Last year he said he regretted calling Barack Obama a "racist" with a "deep-seated hatred for white people or the white culture". He later apologised for mocking Mr Obama's young daughter Malia.
In February he apologised to Reform Judaism, a group that campaigns for the modernisation of the Jewish faith, after comparing them to "radicalised Islam".

But he refused to apologise in May after mock-vomiting on his live TV show following a cancer-awareness advert starring a nude Meghan McCain, the daughter of Senator John McCain.
Beck said that Miss McMcCain, whose father survived cancer before running for the US presidency, should "wear a burka" because she was apparently unattractive.

Despite Beck expressing surprise that political movements would hold camps for children, followers of his 9/12 Project – which aims to "recapture the spirit of the day after America was attacked" – have this summer been doing just that.

Organisers of the "vacation liberty schools" in several states told the Daily Telegraph how they taught children as young as eight a Tea Party-endorsed curriculum spanning religion, economics and political principles.

As I pointed out to you earlier, Norway has high gun ownership. If you knew anything worth knowing you might actually one day understand that issues that are important in the US are not always important in other parts of the world. The gun ownership issue is a non event in most western countries. They want to own guns, they don't want to own guns. Loughner ? He has absolutely nothing to do with what happened in Oslo. Why even bring his name into this ? He was anything BUT a right winger. He was a LEFT WINGER, and more than anything, a nut case.

Tim McVeigh ? Raised Catholic, but was all but agnostic , by the time he pulled off the OK City attack. Even said so himself, so spare us all your tedious, pointless attempts to suggest otherwise.

Not sure what your point is in posting a summery of my comments. You don't dare try to come to any coherent conclusion, because you're not smart enough to do so. I'd revisit and explain every one of those comments( I still stand by each and every one ), but my efforts would be wasted on you.

Frem, you're always talking about how you want everything to be destroyed, how is it any different when Wulf says it? Note that I understand that you want different things, but you're both very vitriolic and it can come across similarly to someone scanning the thread, some mean words here, an insult there, you know. Just sayin.

Wulf: I see what you're _trying to say about if someone else had a gun there they could have shot the badguy. But as others have said people are allowed to own firearms in Norway so the point doesn't really head in the direction you're thinking of. But I know what you meant.

Magon's, yeah, the media is notorious for assumptions and thus they get the people all worked up and thinking that way too. They put together the limited facts that they had and tried to make them explain the situation, but it didn't work right because they assumed and didn't have all the facts yet.

PN has a point about Waco, sure I don't mind the cult leader guy dying, but killing all those kids and then justifying it by saying that since the government did it then its okay and expecting people to go along with it quietly is horrid. I think he's trying to say he wonders why people get upset about this random shooter lunatic stuff but when the government does it people just go along with it and don't make a fuss. Good point PN.

As for political camps for kids, I think they exist here too, I'm sure there's something like Future Progressives of America camp or something, though I've never seen anything about such a thing, but there probably is something like that, so it isn't fair to immediately jump to "Hitler Youth" and say that out loud on the air. I definitely would never send my kids to a camp that pertains to a political party, I'd find it a lil' creepy, but I'd never say that out loud on the air in front of everyone, especially after a tragedy like this. They were kids no matter what the camp was it was full of kids. If he has a problem then he should have killed all the grownups meeting for pre camp briefings, if he was hell bent on killing, something that is silly anyways in this situation.

I hope the Norwegians climb out of the pansy patch on this one and either lock him up forever or go ahead and institute a death penalty option if he's convicted, because this is horrible and can't be allowed to happen again, if he just gets 20 years then when he gets out he'll do it again.

I have to disagree on this point.

I'm not a fan of gun control. Yes, I think weapons should be kept out of the hands of "bad" people. Yet, who determines who is "bad"?

Is a felon who has served their time, considered "bad"? I thought the whole point of jail, was to "pay your debt" to society. Afterwards, you are supposed to be "square with the house".

Determining who is "bad" is a very slippery slope. You don't like someone; their views, philosophies, race, sexual orientation, religion... and suddenly they are the "bad" guys.

Not to mention that anyone who wants a gun, will be able to get one... somehow or the other.

I'm also really concerned with this new push towards mental/emotional profiling in gun-control as well. You may feel depressed for a bit, go in for some counseling, and get better. Because of this you are banned from owning a machine to protect your life? Does that make sense?

Maybe you are a nervous wreck because you got car jacked? You go in for help. But by doing so, you are banned from owning a machine that might make you feel/be safer.

To me this ain't about who he did it to or why, as it seems to be to some, who may not admit it, but it shows, that their primary *issue* with it wasn't WHAT he did, but who and how...

No, to me, this is shit you should NEVER do, to ANYONE, and I realize it may come across as somewhat hypocritical, but remember I am speaking of folk who have already MADE the decision to engage in conduct like this, if they can only get away with it, if they can only justify it, or if they can get some kind of political "Authorization" - cause really, what's the difference between this guy, and one of our troops to signed up to "kill those damn sand n***er raghead muslim fucks!" shooting up falluah ?

Really, what, official sanction ?
Fuckin meaningless - cause war is nothing more than the systematic, organized murder of folks who mostly don't even have a dog in the fight beyond defending their own turf and lives.

To point a weapon with intent at someone you do not know, have never met, has never yet done any harm to you, and fire it - there's NO excuse for that act in my book whatsoever, and those that do so, or desire to do so if they can only get some from of sanction for their murderous impulse...

And you can't face the truth about your own party's role in creating the debt crisis, either. Obama didn't go out and put the nation 14 trillion in debt all on his own. In fact, well under 20% of that debt has anything to do with Obama.

It was listed as projected revenue before Bush decided to give those tax breaks to the rich. If you're going to cut future revenue and not cut corresponding spending, you are indeed incurring a "cost".

You saying that it wasn't a "cost" because it wasn't theirs to count is like me saying that any projected deficits aren't real, because the government hasn't spent that money yet, so there's no deficit.

HELL YES.
Stoltenberg just showed that he prolly has more sense in his pinky than all of OUR so-called leaders collected.
Quote:

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg vowed Wednesday that the twin terror attacks that have stunned his country will not intimidate Norway and that his countrymen will fight back with "more democracy."

Norwegians will defend themselves by showing they are not afraid of violence and by participating more broadly in politics, he told reporters.

"It's absolutely possible to have an open, democratic, inclusive society, and at the same time have security measures and not be naive," he said.

Stoltenberg underlined his commitment to openness, defending freedom of thought even if includes extremist views such as those held by the 32-year-old Norwegian who confessed to Friday's bomb blast at government headquarters and to the shooting massacre at a Labor Party youth camp hours later. At least 76 people were killed.

"We have to be very clear to distinguish between extreme views, opinions — that's completely legal, legitimate to have. What is not legitimate is to try to implement those extreme views by using violence," he said.

"I think what we have seen is that there is going to be one Norway before and one Norway after July 22," he said. "But I hope and also believe that the Norway we will see after will be more open, a more tolerant society than what we had before."

THAT *is* the correct response, don't burn down the castle to protect it, don't discard the principles you're defending - stick to your guns and stand UP for them, all the way, as a spit in the eye to would be tyrants large and small.

Again, Kindness and Mercy as WEAPONS, to fight hate, intolerance, and violence.

My greatest fear was that this would push Norway into the same kind of idiotic security-theatre state we've become, and now that is much alleviated - but of course, they're as a rule a saner society, for many reasons, not the least of which is they're far more in line with what I wrote about regarding the treatment of people AS human beings.
http://www.time.com/time/photogallery/0,29307,1989083_2137380,00.html

Again, it's very simple - DO NOT COMPLY, don't give the bastards what they want, don't become like them, don't give in to fear.

The quote is clipped from here.
