MSNBC suspends journalist over Barack Obama insult after Mark Halperin calls US president 'kind of a dick'

A political journalist who said president Barack Obama was being "kind of a dick" live on air has been suspended by US cable news channel MSNBC.

Mark Halperin, a political analyst and editor-at-large for Time magazine, made the remark on MSNBC's Morning Joe programme on Thursday during a discussion about an Obama press conference the previous day.

Halperin asked the show's presenters jokingly: "Are we on the seven-second delay today? ... I want to characterise how I thought the president behaved."

The presenters appeared to encourage him to speak his mind and after apparent confusion between the studio and the show's production team in the gallery about whether a delay button was being used, Halperin said: "I thought he was kind of a dick yesterday."

This prompted a shocked reaction from the Morning Joe co-presenter Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman: "Oh my God ... delay that! Delay that! What are you doing? I can't believe you – I was joking!"

Halperin then expanded on his comment, saying he thought the president was "posturing" over a deal with the Republicans over spending cuts and tax rises.

Later in the show a sombre-looking Halperin apologised, after the show's presenters admitted they had goaded him into saying it but did not think he would go through with it and also apologised.

Shortly after the show Halperin was suspended by MSNBC. "Mark Halperin's comments this morning were completely inappropriate and unacceptable," the broadcaster said in a statement. "We apologise to the president, the White House and all of our viewers. We strive for a high level of discourse and comments like these have no place on our air. Therefore, Mark will be suspended indefinitely from his role as an analyst."

Halperin also issued a statement: "I completely agree with everything in MSNBC's statement about my remark. I believe that the step they are taking in response is totally appropriate.

"Again, I want to offer a heartfelt and profound apology to the president, to my MSNBC colleagues, and to the viewers. My remark was unacceptable, and I deeply regret it."

Comparing yourself to the President. ANY President...yeah, you get it.

There's been at least a modicum of decency and respect given to the office, at least by those in the media, until recently.

This isn't a good sign. There are lots of ways to disagree w/ the President, and show personal dislike for who ever is in office, but he could have just as easily said ' jerk ' , and conveyed the same meaning. Or near enough.

Obama is a dick. He's not a pontiff. We don't have a theocracy. He's not king, we don't have a monarchy. He's not a divine incarnation. He's a guy we hired. He should not be revered as a God.

The ritual grovelling reminds me of our relationship to Israel, or the way we're expected to react to police, teachers and professors.

I would actually agree with that, if he meant the last couple of years as "recently". But I'm sure he doesn't mean that, or he'd be admitting that Obama has been treated abhorrently by his opponents and Faux News media, and he'd never admit that.

You show me where Obama was treated unfairly by FOX. You just saw an example of where Obama was treated rudely by THE LEFT, on MSNBC.

Which brings up a question I wanted to ask. What exactly is it to be a " dick"?

This is not "He's got a penis," or "He's using his penis," or even "He's acting like a penis."

This usage implies; " He's not cooperating," or "He's not going along," or "He's being stubborn," or "He's being an obstacle,' or, even, " He's using his real authorized power to oppose what we want to do, even in a rude and effective way that no true gentleman would use." At least that's how I use the expression.

Which is what an opposition politician is supposed to do...
Which is pretty much what Kwicko said.

Being a dick means acting like a dick, means like a prick, being obnoxious and purposefully disrespectful, like digging up something that makes someone look bad, painting them in an undue negative light, such as to detract and make them look bad, so you will look better by comparison, like shifting blame onto someone else.

That said, I'll read Mike's post. And also, I think he got canned for insuoting the king. obama is the most dictatorial president we have had, and is a major dick, like Cheney.

I think that dick cheney is so bad that calling someone a Dick is much worse than calling them a dick.

So far, Obama has been a very major Dick.

ETA:

Mike. Yeah, I read the full text of that. The typical blame shifting and posturing. He was being a dick. He has two trillion in revenue, he could do everything he wants to on that. It's his three point seven trillion in spending that's the problem.

ETA2: being a dick is what I was just being to frem in the aboirtion thread, as he was being to me, though i mit have one upped him.

That's light hearted sparring. As was the comment about Obama. The president needs an attitude adjustment, a humility check. He's not Zeus,

Nope, not my rules. Not even close. That guy, Lupe Fiasco, wasn't even a reporter, but a Chicago based rapper.

And no, it wasn't MSNBC. It was a couple of people on camera; that does not translate to the entire company, which REACTED to his statement by getting rid of him. THAT's MSNBC, not a pundit who dared the guy to go for it, NOT KNOWING what he was going to say.

Given you excuse FauxNews for every big of fraud they concoct, it's interesting that you're happy to say someone on MSNBC (quote) forgot (unquote) to edit something. Ergo to you it's not possible for FauxNews to be involved in fraud, but MSNBC must ALWAYS be fraudulent when they do anything. We understand.

If you want to walk back all those similar accusations about how FOX didn't just slip up, and actually intended for those 'mistakes' to be aired, then fine.

Only this isn't a quid pro quo. Slip ups on graphics is one thing, but I don't think anyone was suspended for those. The senior political analyst for msnbc knew well in advance what he was going to say, and that it was going to be controversial. But he went ahead and said it anyways. Hell, he was even goaded on by one of the co-hostettes, to let it ride.

And so he did.

And yet, with all that warning up front, the guys in the control room STILL let the comment slip past them, and make it to the air.

IMO, that's incompetence across the board, and not just one guy's slip up.

And FYI, I'm always attempting a " reasonable " debate here. Hell, it could be said that I am actually standing up for Obama on this, as far as respecting the office of the President goes. Sorry you're the one who can't get past your lustiness for msnbc.

"Slip ups on graphics"?!?!?! You've GOT to be kidding. Just that one instance was so obvious as to be laughable. One minute it's showing one crowd, the next it's showing a clip from months before, then back to the original. Takes a LOT of work to do that, go back into archives and find the footage, edit it in...it's a joke. And of COURSE nobody was fired for it, it WAS intentional. They do that sort of thing fairly often; if they fired everyone who did it, there'd be nobody left!

Whether the "dick" thing was intentional or not, it certainly wasn't intended by "MSNBC", it was done by a single individual, egged on by a couple of others, and nobody cut it out. Maybe it was intentional, we'll never know, but the point is it wasn't "MSNBC", the entire station, the people who run it. And yes, they had the decency to get rid of him, which says to me that it wasn't intentional, but either way, shows MSNBC will get rid of someone who screws up like that, FauxNews never does. They allow myriad nasty remarks about Obama with no problem at all.

Nobody's fooled, Raptor; you'd die before standing up for Obama, you're enjoying dissing MSNBC, nothing more.

I'm torn between the "we should respect the president, he has a hard job and we need to respect the office" position and the "hey, we elected the president so we can say what we want, the president is just another human being" approach. Note that my in-the-middleness about it doesn't shift depending on who's in office, I'm torn no matter who it is. He apologized though and he thought it would be censored so I think we should all just move on and I don't think he needs suspended, a repremand is enough.
An interesting point is that if people weren't being censored with the 8 second delay then they'd have to learn how to behave instead of counting on their producers/staff to take care of it. then again without said delay you get "wardrobe malfunctions" at the Super Bowl.

That you and Kwickie missed that, isn't in the least bit surprising. I see that a lot in you two.

( And no, Kwickie. I'm NOT an editor for Newsweek. Epic fail on your part - again )

Yeah, you keep getting that part wrong. Last I checked, the Newsweek editor isn't HERE. And obviously you aren't a Newsweek editor - one would assume an editor could actually write complete sentences in English, and occasionally even spell the words in them correctly. You fail epically on all counts.

You're the only one HERE making the claim that Obama is some sort of god, or "the chosen one", or "the messiah". That's about the hundredth time I've pointed that out to you. Still aren't very bright, are you?

BTW, does Newsweek still exist? Their new owner died recently, and I haven't seen Newsweek in years, so it's a valid question.

It was never a claim *I* made. I only repeated what the MSM was saying. So, your old fail, has failed you once again. A crassic 2 fer 1 fail.

Not many can pull that one off, but leave it to Kwickie.

Huh. ONE nobody says something on the air, and suddenly it's the whole media who thinks that way.

So the entire media world hates Obama, eh? After all, the #1 "news" network, FauxNews, hates him with a passion, and they are the mainstream of the mainstream media, after all.

Raptor, what idiocy. You've not been "only repeating" what the MSM was saying"--to show that's the case, you would have to show where the media (not just one person, the MEDIA in general) has called Obama the chosen one, or the messiah, or some kind of a god, and you always go beyond that to say "YOUR chosen one/messiah/god". That one guy said it means nothing, it's just convenient for you to grab onto it and use it. Ooops, I see Mike made my point...oh well...

Keep on trying to push those buttons; for some of us, it doesn't work, or even bother us. So I guess, as you keep saying over and over, that's "a fail" for you. Far be it from me or anyone else to stop you having your fun, however, so push away.

Rappy: See the post where I informed DT that simply screaming "I'm right! You're wrong!" isn't a valid debating tactic.

Not that you've ever been interested in having an actual debate about anything, of course.

Lemmie explain..no. Screw that. Lemmie sum up.

That 'one guy' made that comment, absolutely makes my point for me. This guy isn't criticizing Obama, but actually praising him for being 'god' like. And him saying that, acknowledging that sort of sentiment, which comes from the LEFT, and isn't some far, Right wing spin, as you'd have others believe, is what's so remarkable.

No amount of evidence *I* could produce would sway you, because you're biased against anything I say.
I make a statement, you say ' prove it '. I prove it, you say ' that's only ONE guy... '. The game then becomes as tiresome and tedious as your usual 12 paragraph replies, full of entire cut/past articles, and half a dozen childish emoticons, over stating even the most minuscule, trivial point.

And as for Kwickie, with his inane, pointless " here " remark. An issue we've explored far more than was ever deserved, mainly because he hasn't the character to man up for what he did. Kwickie added one word, "here" to his comment, after I had already quoted him correctly, so as to change the meaning of his reply, and there by attempting to fool others into believing what I said to be some how invalid. His editing went w/ out acknowledgement by him, meaning he lied, and has yet to admit what he did.

Hey, Rappy, did you ever admit that you were lying when you falsely claimed that Weiner accused Breitbart of hacking his account?

Did you ever admit that you were lying when you claimed that you had NEVER posted ANYWHERE that it bugs you that the President is black?

Did you ever admit that you were lying when you claimed that 95% of Americans pay no income taxes at all?

Of the two of us here, I think it's pretty clear who has the proven track record of lying and refusing to acknowledge their deplorable behavior. (That would be you.)

I don't know what all this "here" shit is about, nor do I care. My point, which is accurate, is that one person called Obama "godlike" or whatever. One person. To extrapolate that to "all" on the left is assinine. End of story. Back to your bickering.

Oh, damn, you are just TOO much fun, Raptor. Can't keep from biting, can 'ya?

That is a pathetically racist, slanted video, even in the minute or two I bothered to watch. But let's leave that aside. So TWO people have referred to Obama as some kind of "god". Wow. Two people; that must mean ALL Dems think so. How many people HERE have said it, in order to justify you saying "You all..."?

Don't bother replying, you're only humorous for just so long, then you get boring as hell. Instead spend your time looking for one or two more people to try and validate your statement. Won't work, of course, but far be it from me to try to disuade you from acting like an ass.

Riona, "Crassic" is just as you thought, kind of like saying "ya" or "em" rather than "you" and "them". Nothing more.
