Kind of a big thing happening in the Middle East right now. In case you've missed it.

Quote:

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi says the Mediterranean has been turned into a battlefield after Western air strikes yesterday and says he has opened arms depots for his people to defend the country.

Gaddafi, in a brief audio message broadcast on state television, condemned the allied Western attacks on Libya as ‘‘barbaric, unjustified Crusaders’ aggression.’

He vowed to retaliate with military and civilian targets in the Mediterranean, warning that the interests of Mediterranean and North African countries were now ‘‘in danger.’’

‘‘The Mediterranean region has become a real battlefield,’’ he said. ‘‘Arms depots have been opened and all the Libyan people are being armed’’ to defend the country against Western forces.

... fully loaded, safety off...

I don't think it's any of our business - sorry we're involved at all other than just saying we approve or voting on the action France had taken.
We always lose when we do this stuff. Sometimes people beg for our help and then when we do we're meddling a-holes, and sometimes we decide, "you need our help," and then we ARE meddling a-holes and in both cases we spend trillions and good people die.

When I first heard France had fired on Lybian troops I thought, "Thank God, let them have at it, we can sit back and watch."

Qhadafi and his kids aren't going to go easy - more like Saddam Hussein and his children.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

What Piz said, and then some!

We should offer moral support to those who stand for the cause of freedom, but we should also respect that "freedom" means we respect their choice - even if they choose things we may not be happy with.

Qhadafi's on his way out. It's time to consider what comes after. What if the people of Libya vote in a theocracy? Or a strongman? What if they vote in Muslim fundamentalists? Will we still support their freedom to do that?

In the wider scope of things, is our show of force more about sending a warning to our "allies" in the area - Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, etc. - to be careful how they treat THEIR protesters?

"Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservatives." - John Stuart Mill

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

I really like Gabbard. I wish I could vote for her. Why isn't SHE candidate for President, instead of that neocon Hillary (who strenuously advocated to destroy Libya)?

This is btw another example of how we could prevent "refugee crises" if we only followed the mantra of "First, do no harm".

I think it's time you disabused yourself of that pleasant little fairy tale about our fearless leaders being some sort of surrogate daddy or mommy, laying awake at night thinking about how to protect the kids. HA! In reality, they're thinking about who to sell them to so that they can get a few more shekels in their pockets.
