Not surprisingly, the earthquake and subsequent tsunami was the big story on all of the broadcast and cable morning shows this morning.

On the cable networks, CNN and Fox News dedicated their morning shows almost entirely to the quake (Related: CNN had correspondent Kyung Lah reporting live from Tokyo), while MSNBC's "Morning Joe" took a slightly different angle:

"Morning Joe" covered the quake in news updates and in graphics in the lower-third, but still dedicated a good chunk of its program to political coverage, including interviews with David Axelrod and Pat Buchanan, as well as a roundtable on the political showdown in Wisconsin.

TV news and social media snapped to attention early this morning (U.S. time) as news came of a 8.9 earthquake that hit off the coast of northern Japan and the tsunami that caused massive devastation and rolled across the Pacific.

An ongoing question, though, in what is sure to be a big story, is how well U.S. networks can cover the events, as many of them have gutted overseas bureaus, including those in Asia. And one puzzling exception to the dedicated coverage this morning was MSNBC, which stuck largely to politics while Hawaii and the Pacific coast waited out a tsunami warning.

While most networks were showing video of wreckage in Japan and monitoring tsunami maps of the Pacific, MSNBC's Morning Joe spent a good chunk of its time on American politics: roundtables on the Wisconsin labor showdown, an interview with the state's governor, a chat with Pat Buchanan about the political effect of rising oil prices. To be fair, the network did carry earthquake news in its lower third and broke in for news updates; but it also kept up a bizarre, Casual-Friday tone, with Joe Scarborough bantering about the iPad 2 and the Vermont screensaver on his Blackberry.

Must've been a different MSNBC than the one I was watching yesterday, which was all earthquake/tsunami coverage for the greater part of the day.

Turn it on now - it's still nothing but earthquake & tsunami coverage.

Yeah, me, too, Mike. I switched around between it, CNN and the local news, but I'll admit I spent most of my time on the two local news station because they were getting the best and most accurate stuff on Santa Cruz and Crescent City. In the evening, however, whenever I switched to MSNBC during a commercial somewhere else, it was ALL earthquake and tsunami. Rachel Maddow devoted virtually her entire show to it, and rolled it right on into The Ed Show (but I didn't see beyond that...can't stand that ultra-left blowhard).

So I don't know where they got that, but I can attest to the fact that MSNBC covered it EXTENSIVELY whenever I checked it out during the day, and coverage was about ALL there was in the evening. Yes, there was a bit about Libya (along with a remark that the Libyans are afraid the world will turn away from them because of Japan), and some about Wisconsin. I'm sure there was on other shows, too. Me, I'd be happy if they hadn't covered it so MUCH--after channel-surfing between seven channels all day, I heard and saw an awful lot of duplication.

The networks went back to "All My Children" and "Jeopardy" and stuff...just stopped reporting on it from noon until evening--I know THAT, too, because I switched among them when there were commercials on the two local channels. So why isn't anyone complaining about THEM?? Oh, wait, I forgot; MSNBC bad; FauxNews good. Right...

I think you all are missing the big picture. It's obvious the earthquake and resulting tsunami happened because George Bush is a racist.

Funny, though, who people who claim to be independent and berate the MSM are still partisanly programmed enough to not only defend/attack networks on this basis, but more surprisingly to me, actually what them, unaware that their very analysis of what is important is being set by television programming.

No wonder you guys never talk about Africa. 'cause they don't.

I'm appalled anyone watches this junk.

Lessee, I don't claim to be "independent and berate the MSM"...sometimes I MOCK them, and I don't believe everything I see/hear. I try to keep things in perspective. We have public television, but only one or two stations and they don't do that great a job on news, so I don't watch them a lot. When it comes to things that are happening immediately, footage is footage, and the networks and CNN can afford the best footage (which others then use), so I watch them. Ergo, I was able to watch the most violent day of the Egyptian protests and the tsunami in Japan virtually as they happened. I see nothing wrong with that. I'm quite aware of most of the times they are slanting thing, etc., and take what they report with a grain of salt ALWAYS, but I see nothing wrong in watching footage of a disaster as it takes place.

Thank gawd for technology in some ways; apparently people were using cell phones to tell rescuers where they were. This is a good thing, to me.

America loves a winner!

I'm fed up with how most of the MSM has covered this event.

CNN has done a better job, imo, but even still...I'd expect more from folks whose JOB it is to cover major events.

First, I really hate the massive clutter of graphics on screen. NHK and other Japanese media clearly have lots of footage. They then sell/loan/ give - what ever the details, that footage to other networks. I'm watching FOX, and on TOP of the graphics NHK has, they put on scrollers and 'breaking news' graphics... nearly 1/3 of the damn image is covered up !!

Running footage from 12+ hours ago is NOT " breaking news ". All are guilty of that one.

The anchors act as if their viewers are idiots. Every network does this. I tell you what, you start talking to the audience like they're adults, educated adults, and they'll catch on.

Well said, and the clutter of graphics drives me nuts too. Just in general it's bad enough (what the hell do I care what's on next when it obscures what I'm watching NOW???), but the footage from Japanese stations has FAR more stuff cluttering it up than I'm used to, bad as it is here. When you put THEIR clutter together with the STATION's clutter, it's absurd! Not to mention unpleasant to watch...

And yes, it was almost humorous, after watching the tsunami into the middle of the night, to wake up and turn on news and see "BREAKING NEWS!" consisting of exactly the images I'd seen the night before. If it bleeds...it leads...

The MSM will NEVER treat its audience like adults...too many of them AREN'T (if you take that to mean "intelligent adults")...and they've always, always reached for the "lowest common denominator". Why do you think we get so much coverage of Sheen and the other "celebraties" (I use the word advisedly) and their antics? It's what the public wants... Unfortunately, there is a portion of us out here who'd like real, adult news...and we ain't gonna get it.

It's easy to filter out the slant. Fewer people recognize the curiosity of their topic selection.

Almost everything that MSM focuses on hits the topics of "problems that don't matter." Japan is an exception, but WI isn't.

BTW, Aristide is returning to Haiti.

Sadly, like everything else in the media, news broadcast survives on rating. Naturally, they'll report on stories that people like to watch and not what they should watch. IMHO, if you want adult coverage of the news, just do your own leg work using various online resources.

Just a word of caution though, a lot of the news we watch on television has been filtered to a certain extent to conform to our own views of what the world should be like. When one starts looking at the world through a global view rather than an American or even a Western view, one often finds that what is fed through us through our own media isn't completely the real or whole truth.

On more than several occasion while in college, I've been told by foreign students that we Americans tend to be ethnocentric. It has taken me a while to try and not to be that way, but I have to admit, it's a very difficult thing to not be when we're brought up to be exactly that.

Therefore, having adult news mean that you have to not be ethnocentric, because as they say in the movies, "You want the truth? You can't handle the truth."

Yeah, well - problem with doing your own legwork is the time factor, especially since by comparison americans have so very much less non-work time than anyone else on the planet, and a social structure run by folks who are masters at distract-divert-divide, at times it can feel like you're a cat trying to ignore a lazer pointer, LOOK HERE, LOOK THERE, OH LOOK THAT WAY!... anything but at the issues, and HEY LOOK, CELEBRITIES!
*rolling eyes*

In regards to ethnocentrism, one thing knowing folks in many countries has done is given me an appreciation of the differences, strengths and weaknesses of other cultures, and both how similar, and just how different, they can be - I was originally disappointed that RAWA wasn't as aggressive as I thought it should be but over time it became clear that in their society that would not work as effectively as expected, and carried risks far beyond just backlash.
(as the NFA situation made abundantly clear somewhat later)

Still, it's hard to not be, sure - plus when it comes to activism we have so very much wrong in our own backyard that at times it can become very difficult to really empathise with problems half a world away no matter how much worse they are, and not for any length of time, certainly.

Re: Aristide - good news that, but I hope he has a veritable army of mercs to protect him from our "protection" when he gets there, given what happened the LAST time he trusted us.

Speakin of which, now that the initial knee-jerk help-the-victims rush has settled, was I in charge of Japans defenses I would be on the lookout for the usual-suspect vultures, and be prepared to chase off the IMF, WTO, FTAA, Blackwater, Haliburton/KBR and all those folk, cause that kind of "help" can cost you far more than just money... it can cost you all that you have.

Thing is, I was one of the people actually watching MSNBC that morning, and they WERE covering it, complete with video of the tsunami rolling across houses, farms, and fields.

I find it funny that people who claim NOT to ever watch MSNBC keep trying to tell me what MSNBC did and didn't do or show.

Right on, Haken. I have been shocked over and over again by friends in the UK, Canada, Australia and other places who have told me how "the world" views things, which I heard quite differently on our MSM. I do tend to get a lot of my news from BBC and other places, as well as trying to ferret out as much as I can from the biased US news sources; if it's important or sounds fishy, I go looking elsewhere.

And Frem is right about the time factor...I tend to watch different news sources and, when an item is reported that interests me, I go to the internet to see what I can find about it. That takes time!

I tend to catch some stuff on MSNBC, some on CNN, but most either via online sources or podcasts. I'm given free reign at work, so I get to listen to A LOT of news/public interest stuff, usually 8-10 hours a day. When you've got so many sources pouring info your way, you tend to get a whole lot of different viewpoints represented.

The reason I had MSNBC on the other morning was that I was laid up at home and didn't really care to hear the local news, weather, and traffic reports *again*, so I flipped over to MSNBC and got inundated with earthquake/tsunami coverage. A few images was all it took for me to say, "Hoe-lee FUCK, this is BAD..."

And their reportage stayed on most of the weekend, even pre-empting their usual "Lockup" weekend marathon until the wee hours of the morning(s).

Meghan's has a point about American news networks not always doing well at covering world affairs. I think though that when it is something like this, huge earthquake in Japan, they do a little better than usual. I'm one of those people who, when something happens, turns on the news to see it and watch it unfold. Maybe that's rude or unfeeling, call it what you will, I've just always been that way ever since I was a little girl.
